Make Your Desktop Clutter Look Great With These ‘Desktop Icon Pictures’!

These are the results of a Gizmodo ‘desktop clutter art’ contest.

These are made using different desktop folders with the same icons.

You can make your own by following these steps:

1. Remove all icons from your desktop (if you want) or just tidy a space to make the picture.

2. You will need to deactivate the ’snap to grid’ mechanism in windows. Right click on the desktop and under ‘arrange icons by’ you can uncheck this.

3. Find a number of icons you wish to use to make your picture and apply them to some empty folders.

4. Copy your folders lots and lots to make your image!!

And You Wish You could Play Them Offline Without An Internet Connection?

Well Now You Can.

This requires no special programs, you just need to be running a Windows Machine and have Internet Explorer Installed.

Okay, here we go:

1. Open Internet Explorer & navigate to Miniclip.com.

2. Begin playing the desired game, make sure you get to the main menu (of the game) before the next step.

3. In Internet Explorer, select the ‘Tools’ menu and navigate to ‘Internet Options’.

4. In the ‘General’ tab, find the ‘Browsing History’ section and click on settings.

5. Now click ‘View Files’.

6. A window will open in explorer, showing all the temporary internet files. Click on ‘type’ to arrange all the files into the separate file types.

7. Scroll down the list until you find a ‘Shockwave Flash Object’. There will probably be a number of these (depending on how often you clear you temporary internet files), find the one which seems to be the desired game, it will usually be called whatever the game is called.

8. Copy this file to your desktop, Windows will more than likely not recognize the file (unless you have a special program installed).

9. Right click on the file and select ‘open with’. A menu will appear showing your installed programs, select ‘Internet Explorer’ in this and check the box ‘always use the selected program to open this kind of file’.

10. The game will run! Even though it’s running in internet explorer, its not using the internet (look in the address bar).

The Gap Between Clothing & Technology Has Been Narrowing, But Is This Too Far?

These, umm… Jeans… have been stitched together by designer Erik De Nijs. He has described them as: ‘modern shaped trousers which is often worn by youngsters’. The jeans incorporate a keyboard over the front of the pants which are supposedly Bluetooth 2.0 enabled, a set of speakers in the knees, a back pocket for your ‘travel mice (probably your only friend left by now), and a joystick controller located underneath the left-front pocket.

Replacer is the best way to replace system files!

The program is a small CMD prompt utility. Simply open the program and a small CMD prompt window will appear to replace the files. The instructions are clear and easy, just drag the original system file and then the replacement system file.

Replacer will create a backup automatically, you can it use by opening the file in Replacer again.

Microsoft has made Windows XP Service Pack 3 available to Technet and MSDN subscribers today!

The final RTM (Release to Manufacturing) version of Windows XP SP3 has been released to subscribers of Technet and MSDN today. It was originally expected to be available on May 2nd, I know what your thinking, ‘Microsoft? Releasing something BEFORE its due?’. It’s happened.

For Technet and MSDN subscribers, all you have to do is login and go to the ‘Top Subscriber Downloads’ section. The file size is 544.8 MB.

For everyone else, you can expect your Windows Update anytime after April 29th with your SP3!

This is a very simple tweak to remove the text from underneath all the icons in XP or Vista user folders (My Documents etc)

Okay:

Simply hold the shift key and double click to open the folder. Thats It!

The folder will stay without icon labels until you hold the shift key and open the folder agin to toggle the text on.

NOTE: This only works on ‘thumbnail view’.

Are You Constantly Annoyed By The Fact You Have To Wait For The Login Screen When Your Computer Is Starting Up?

Not Anymore.

If you are using Windows XP or Vista and don’t want to have to type in your username and password when you start Windows, this is for you.

Here we go:

1. Type ‘control userpasswords2′ into either the startmenu search box (Vista) or the RUN command (XP).

2. It will open the ‘user accounts’ window.

3. Now uncheck ‘Users must enter a username and password to use this computer’ by clicking on the tick button once. Click the ‘apply’ button. It will ask you for the username and password you wish to use for the automatic login, enter your information and click OK.

4. Your done! Windows will now login without requesting a username or password.

Have You Always Wanted To Change That Image In The System Properties Dialog Box?

Okay, here are the easy steps:

1. It is neccessary to download a program called Resource Hacker. It is a program which can edit Windows Executable files, for example .exe, .dll or .bat. We will be editing a .cpl file, or a control panel file.

2. While it is downloading (it will usually be instantaneous anyway) you will need to find a file called sysdm.cpl, found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdm.cpl. Copy this file to your dektop.

3. Now open Resource Hacker. Select File > Open and navigate to the sysdm.cpl file copied to your desktop.

4. When sysdm.cpl is open, there will be a number of expandable folders. Expand the Bitmap folder by clicking the plus next to the folder.

5. Now expand the ‘1′ folder and click on ‘1033′. The default system properties picture will be there, to replace it, right click on ‘1033′ and select replace resource.

6. Select ‘open file with new bitmap’ and navigate to the new picture. (The new picture shouldn’t be any more than 300 x 300 and needs to be a BMP file)

7. Now select File > Save. Resource Hacker will also automatically create a backup of sysdm.cpl on the desktop. Just delete this file (the file we are using is already a backup).

9. Download Replacer: (This is a program to replace a file which is currently running)

Replacer: Version 2.63

10. Open Replacer, a ms-dos windows will open, follow the instructions. You will have to drag the original file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdm.cpl) and then the replacement file (the copy of sysdm.cpl on the desktop which we edited).

11. Restart the computer.

Open The System Properties Dialog Box To See Your New Image!
