How To Speak Simple Kannada Sentences in Past, Present & Future

Many of my Kannada learners have the same request. Use of verbs in sentences. A previous post, entitled, "What are you doing ? ", shows you how the verbs change when you use them in each tense. The correct endings for the sentences needs to be addressed, which will also tell you how to use them in past, present and future tense. To make you understand easily, I have chosen to highlight sentences sent by an anonymous learner which will serve the purpose.

He watches movies everyday.

Avanu dinaalu / nithya picture noDthaane.

You can also say

Avanu dinakke wondu picture noDthaane.

He watched the movie yesterday.

Avanu aa picturena nenne noDda .

He will watch the movie tomorrow.

Avanu aa picturena naLe noDthaane.

He has been thinking about watching the movie since long time.

Priyanka Alva is the daughter of danseuse Nandini Alva and the Late Jeevaraj Alva, an ex-minister of Karnataka. Nandini ia a Punjabi and Jeevaraj , a Mangalorean and so the wedding is a fusion of Punjabi and Mangalorean styles. The cuisine and ceremonies are also a fusion. Art and culture play an important part in the festivities as Alvas are patrons of Kannada Art and Culture.

DASARA HABBADA SHUBHASHAYAGALU

Dasara festival is celebrated with great pomp and fervor each year with many ladies inviting people to come and view the dolls exhibited in their homes. In many parts of Karnataka state, dolls of Indian origin, namely idols of various dieties, are showcased along with Channapatna toys, Pattada Gombe which are dressed up in colorful silk sarees and jewelry,flowers, fruits, animals, trees,all are exhibited in rows and some depict stories from the Epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. International dolls from various parts of the world also are exhibited and most ladies have been collecting the dolls for ages, and some would have inherited these dolls from their ancestors and the new international ones are added to their collection from their jaunts abroad. New ones are added every year. The dolls are not just exhibited everyday during these 9 days of Dasara, Pujas are offered every evening, and married ladies are offered the traditional turmeric, flowers and kum kum, bangles, betel leaves and nut. Some also give a gift of a blouse piece or some Ganesha artefact.
Dasara is a festival for the whole of Karnataka state, and predominantly in Mysore.

The Difference Between "AVANA", "AVANIGE" and "AVANANNA", "AVANADU".

In previous sessions, you have learnt the use of "Avanu", we will now see the use of "avana", "avanige" and "avananna", "avanadu".

Let us see some examples:

He is my son.
Avanu nanna maga.

What is his name?
Avana hesaru yeanu?

In the example, "Give him 100 rupees", Avanige is used.
Avanige nooru rupaayi kodu / kodi.

In the second example, "Don't beat him", "Avannanna" is perfect."Avanna" is also the same.
Avannanna /Avanna hodiya beda / bedi.

This is his bike.
Ee bike avanadu / avandu.

Kannada is a beautiful language and learning it becomes easier when you practice with a kannadiga. Practice as you know increasingly makes you confident and fluent in the language. And of course, while you are in Karnataka, you learn to automatically answer in Kannada or seek directions, without batting an eyelid. You will also seek out Kannada culture and sample typical Kannada food.
