KCGAC-Green Wins Tournament

What a day that was! With the heat index well over 100°, and the pitch temperature even hotter, the Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club won the inaugural Coors Light Midwest Gaelic Classic in commanding fashion.
A second KCGAC team played hard, but came up short in the end.

Many thanks to all who came to watch some great Gaelic Football! And to the teams who traveled so far to play in the heat and give it their all.

The tournament went down like this:

First Game: KCGAC-Green 4-4 over Twin Cities GFC 0-4
Second Game: Little Rock GAA 3-5 over KCGAC-Navy 1-4

Consolation Match: Twin Cities GFC 4-13 over KCGAC-Navy 4-7

Championship:
KCGAC-Green 7-11 over Little Rock GAA 3-7

Again, an awesome day! Not just because of the victory... but because the tournament went off without a hitch, despite the extreme heat. Also, want to thank our many volunteers who pitched in and our sponsors who make what we do happen.

The 2009 Coors Light Midwest Gaelic Classic

Well here we go! Just a few days remain before the Big Show. Saturday June 27th is quickly approaching, and many people are working behind the scenes to put on a great tournament.

That's a pretty sweet looking tournament logo, don't you think?
Much thanks to 2nd Vice Chair Patrick for his efforts.

So here are the details:

The Latest Info

The KCGAC took a little trip down to Arkansas, to play in the Rumble in the Rock Gaelic Football Tournament. The Club Team played the likes of Little Rock GAA, St Louis GAA and a combined team of Springfield/Northwest Arkansas.
Came out with a 2-2 record on the day. Well done to all those who went and upheld the honor of the KCGAC.

PUB LEAGUE

The KCGAC kicked off the brand spankin' new Pub League this past Sunday and what a fantastic start.

The first match pitted Lew's Grill & Bar against Charlie Hooper's. A close match played under a sweltering late Spring sun with the clover under foot. Tight through the first half, tighter in the second, Lew's pulled ahead in the closing minutes with back-to-back-to-back goals to administer the Coup d' Grace.

The 2nd match followed shortly after, Governor Stumpy's versus Llywelyn's Pub. From the outset Stumpy's controlled the field, winning balls and driving downfield. Though, like in the first match, it remained close through the first half, this time because of several missed kicks. Those points would have come in handy! The second half saw much of the same, and the Stumps began connecting on points and goals. Final Score - The Gov 5-7 Llywelyn's 3-3.

The next KCGAC Pub League Match Day is June 21st - 11:00am - Southwest High

The 2009 Midwest Gaelic Classic is just weeks away. We're hosting a large tournament, the first of its kind, in Kansas City.
Look for a rematch (hopefully!) against Little Rock, also Minneapolis and our friends from Springfield/Northwest Arkansas will join us as well.

Rumble In The Rock

Little Rock Tournament

Right now the KCGAC is in Little Rock, bedding down in preparation for Saturday's Rumble In The Rock.

A team of Kansas City's Finest is set to take on the likes of Little Rock GAA, St. Louis GAA and maybe a squad from Northwest Arkansas and Springfield, in tournament play.

Here's to the KCGAC giving it their all and giving it to them good.

This Saturday, the KCGAC is hosting the boys from Springfield in a little Gaelic Football Match. We throwdown at 1pm - Southwest High School - right there at 66th & Wornall.

The KCGAC Pub League kicks off this Sunday with two strong teams going at it. During the next few months four teams sponsored by four excellent pubs and bars will hash it out on the pitch. At the end - the championship will be decided at the Annual Celtic Ranch Cup.

Spring Has Sprung

First Match of 2009

The KCGAC traveled to Lawrence recently to play a start-up club at the Haskell Indian Nations University. How did Haskell come to have a Gaelic squad?
Well, a young woman from Ireland came to the school to teach the Gaelic language as a class and the rest is history.

The Match

The Haskell team was decked out in official jerseys from Lámh Dhearg in Belfast, home club to Una Meabh, our aforementioned professor.They formed as a class/club in October. At that time we had visited to do a show & tell and demonstration.
The match was awesome as it took place in wonderful early spring weather at dusk, under the lights, in the historic Haskell stadium.
The KCGAC was geared up for this match, the first of the year. And more than plenty of players showed up ready to go!

In the end, though Haskell played valiantly and showed they will become a team to be reckoned with... the KCGAC took the victory...

And Haskell was the most gracious host... giving each KCGAC player some really cool t-shirts combining Haskell's and Gaelic imagery into the design.

A great night all around - and it looks like the students will keep playing though their leader Una Meabh is shortly returning home. They'll miss her and so will we.

The KCGAC is heading to Lawrence, KS to play a new team formed at the Haskell Indian Nations University.

Yep, a professor is teaching the Gaelic language as a course, and she also happens to be a Gaelic Footballer from Ireland. So, we're playing a game.

The KCGAC had a blast marching in the Kansas City St. Patrick's Day Parade. What a beautiful day 'twas too... 90° in the sun.

Before we stepped off, the Club made an appearance on FOX4's morning show. Here's the video of us showing off some skills, explaining the sports of Gaelic Football & Hurling... also playing keep-away with some news anchors.

Big things still to come... Pub League, First Travel Match of the season for footballers...

And don't forget about the Youth Program - kicking off April 11th.

Wow! The KCGAC had a blast at the Brookside Warm-Up Parade!

A number of player/members and their girlfriends and families marched through Kansas City's Brookside neighborhood, sporting the Green&Navy.
A few of us did some demos for the crowds, showing them what type of sport we play.

KCGAC Begins New Season

Well folks... we're one year into the existence of the KCGAC, and what a year it's been. You can read all about that in the posts below...

However, let's now talk about the future.

Ahead for this year:

The KCGAC is hosting a Midwest Regional Tournament in June

We'll also be marching in two St. Patrick's Day Parades. Both the Brookside Warm-Up and the big daddy parade, The Kansas City Parade.

YOUTH PROGRAM

And really big news! We're starting up a Youth Program!
It's for both boys and girls ages 6 through 14. And they'll learn how to play both Hurling & Gaelic Football.
Thought we'd get the kids involved to train and play against their own kind! Plus, this will help develop and spread GAA around the KC Metro.
1st Vice-Chair of the KCGAC, Devin is spearheading this endeavour, contact him at devin@kcgac.org

It's a heck of a deal. $15 for one child. For the whole season! Can't get a better price for a youth sport than that!

RECENT NEWS

We held our All-Club Meeting recently at the Irish Museum and Cultural Center of Kansas City. Great times. Good drink and information.

Had a very good turnout and we went over the changes and developments within the Club. Also, talked about goals for this sophomore year of the Club.

We also presented the Museum with a pair of Hurleys, a sliotar and an Official KCGAC Wicked Sweet Jersey™.
They'll be placed in one of the museums displays, showcasing a slice of the modern world of Irish culture, alongside the history of the Irish in the Midwest.

How Time Flies...

Not exactly 'how' time flies, but more that it does...

As I sit and type this, methinks I hear the pitter-patter of hooves upon my rooftop... so I must make this quick.

We have now passed the Solstice and the days will begin to get longer, bit by bit, until the sun shines brightly and warmly upon the field of play.

We have continued to play and train... facing wind and snow and frigid temperatures... strengthening our bodies and our spirit...

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, Saturnalia or another festival that shines a light in the darkest of Winter... to all out there in KCGAC-Land we want to wish you and yours a very Merry Holiday season.

As is custom in Ireland at this time of year, consider this your light in the window...

Come on inside if you find yourself out in the cold.

Autumn Happenings

Hello All! Long time, no blog...

It's been a few weeks since the awesome Celtic Ranch Cup and the KCGAC continues to train and scrimmage in preparation for League play in the Spring.

Notice there are new practice times:

2pm for Gaelic Football

We won't let Old Man Winter slow us down! But we do need sunlight, thus the time change.

The Celtic Ranch Cup

Champions & Beyond...

Sunday, September 28th, two teams of KCGAC members took to the pitch for the first Celtic Ranch Cup.
Here's the wrap-up from the KCGAC Football Director George V.:

Ulster vs Connacht
Winner: Ulster

A brave and very competitive match was played ... between Ulster and Connaught of the Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club.
Ulster stand outs were: Paddy Bernard (amazing goal), Alex (new to the game but solid), Travis and Jesse (devastating combination), Murphy, Chad and Jeff in the back line were very much responsible for the Ulster win.
And the Sully's, true mad bog men.

Connaught, the bridesmaid, saw Brendan McCormac show us all what a real GAA player does with the ball.
Chase and Drake tore through the Ulster line like they were standing still.
Pete and Danny showed the kind of aggression we all need to adapt to, this is Gaelic, cricket is on the far field!
The two Taylor brothers held their own in the back line and have the potential to be some of our best players.
A big special "Good Job" to Katie, our first female player on the field in a full game and she held her own with the hairy boys.
I hope she is an inspiration to other women in the area to join our club.

Final score was Ulster 3-15 (24pts) to Connaught 4-9 (21pts)
Those close scores are very representative of how well matched the two teams were.

It was an awesome match. We fielded 15 a side, s is regulation and we had plenty of subs. That gives you an idea of how big the Club has become in just a short tome.
Dozens of folks came out to watch and we appreciate their support.
The Match: Well played by all, including the new folks, who have really added quite a lot to the Club in a very short amount of time.

Also, wanted to recognize the accomplishments of one of our younger members, who is not so young anymore.
Drake just turned 18, and achieved something most young men never do - he became an Eagle Scout.
That takes dedication, smarts and a can-do attitude found among the best of Scouting. He joins an elite group and will always be an Eagle Scout.
We of the KCGAC couldn't be prouder.

Time To Catch Up

There's been a lot of things happening with the KCGAC, let's catch you up on the next big thing:

The Celtic Ranch Cup

The first Gaelic Football match in Kansas City is set for this Sunday,
September 28, 4:00pm.
You will want to be there.

This is an inter-club match, a chance to test ourselves, our skills and our endurance. The KCGAC has had a more than successful beginning. We've been knocking down club goals left and right.
And to celebrate: We present the Celtic Ranch Cup.
Named after the KCGAC's prime sponsor, The Celtic Ranch of Weston, Mo., we hope to have this match reoccur as an annual event.

So come on out and enjoy some great Gaelic Football and plenty of craic afterward. We'll be drawing the winner of the jersey raffle at this time.

KCIF '08

The Kansas City Irish Fest was bigger and better than ever before. And besides the great music and craic, the reason it was so good was, well, us.
Every member who came out and volunteered their time did an outstanding job recruiting and telling the story of the Gaelic Games and the KCGAC. Drake and Andrew worked especially hard.
Accomplishments:

Led a Gaelic Games workshop
Manned a booth
Explained & Demonstrated the Gaelic Games to many hundreds of people
Signed up 120 people
Quaffed many a pint
Ate some really large fish
Raised a lot of money for the club through sticker sales and the raffle for a Wicked Sweet Jersey™

We also presented a club jersey to Terry from the Celtic Ranch, our primary sponsor.

Wanted to update folks on one of our young members who has gone off to learn how to be a leader of warriors.
Matt is one of the founders of the KCGAC.
Unfortunately for us, obviously good for the country, he's off at West Point learning to be all he can be.

After KCIF, we found ourselves doubled in size. It's been fantastic to see dozens of new people at training these past couple of Sundays. We've added people of all skill levels and it's great to see everyone take to these sports.
Several people have been working very hard behind the scenes to make this Club happen. And we're all very glad to see that it is. It's been very rewarding. The sky's the limit.

What A Fest!

Kansas City Irish Fest '08

My goodness!! What a great time we had this past weekend at the KCIF. Three days of fun, three days of meeting new people, three days of telling the story of the KCGAC.

Three days later and your blogmeister is still exhausted...

We met hundreds of people, handed out hundreds of flyers, signed up more than a hundred interested folk, quaffed dozens of pints, ate some amazingly large fish and established ourselves as the cool kids on the Kansas City Irish Scene.

Our Wicked Sweet Jersey™ Raffle was a hit! Everyone was hot for the Green & Navy of the KCGAC. We also presented Terry from The Celtic Ranch with her very own jersey.

NEW TRAINING TIME

Now we must turn our attention to Training this Sunday, September 7th. We're changing our time to 4pm - same location.
Due to the response from KCIF, we're planning on having a dual-sport practice, both Football & Hurling, a Gaelic 101 if you will. We're expecting a number of new recruits, so we'll use the time to teach 'em what we know.

The Green & The Navy

The KCGAC Jerseys Arrive

And just in time, too.

The day before we were set to play in the Mid-America Gaelic Classic, the jerseys had yet to arrive from Ireland. I kept checking the tracking number online - out for delivery... I checked again - out for delivery... Those danged tracking numbers!!
Then finally at 3:25pm, a bouncing bound-up box arrived on the stoop, and we dragged it inside.
Thanks to the digital revolution, we recorded the arrival and unpacking:

Mid-America Gaelic Classic
So, they arrived in time for our trip down to Springfield, Mo to play in the Mid-America Gaelic Classic.
This was our second road trip and the second time we would get to play the Little Rock GAA. But first up was St. Louis, a club well established. They've been so for nearly 5 years now and are heading to play in the Nationals in Boston this year.

With that said, we took them on in what we would consider an exhibition match. I don't think anyone kept score. Though your blogmeister did have a shot on goal and Andrew Sully upheld the honor of the KCGAC by booting one through the uprights. Take your points, man!

Then Little Rock played St. Louis and fared only infinitesimally better against them than we did.

Rematch

After that, the KCGAC took on Little Rock for a bit of sweet revenge. We played LR several weeks back in our very first match. We learned a lot about the sport in a lopsided LR victory and we wanted a bit of payback.

We started off a bit cold and Little rock was still warm from its match against StL. And though we had a couple of good tries and some shots on goal, Little Rock led 0-5 to 0-0 by the close of the first half.

The tide turned when the second half began. Down only 5 points, we knew we could erase that with smart play.

We attacked relentlessly. Up front, our forwards, lead by the Sulley Brothers, led a blistering offensive.

Sharpshooter Eamon got in on the action.

We ruled them in the second, with a blistering attack that didn't let up until we had them 3-2 to 1-6.
Unfortunately, Little Rock scored a very late goal which put them ahead 2-6 to 3-2. They beat us by one, 12-11.

That's the way it goes sometimes. We did win something that day. Respect.

Not bad for a club just five months old.
We'll get 'em next time.

Hibernian Heat Wave

Have you noticed the theme in several of these posts yet?

Yeah, it deals with heat.

It appears that once you leave the comfort of a hermetically sealed abode and venture outside during this time of year, you tend to get a little warm.
Today, the Heat Miser was along for the ride.

And it was so as the KCGAC ventured to a very nice little park in Sugar Creek, Mo.
Yeah, there's more to the town than simply being a collector of Superfund sites.

Sugar Creek is also better known for its Slovak Festival featuring beauties such as this young lass....

But today, the town hosted the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Padraig Pearse Division. This was the AOH's Homecoming and we were invited to attend.
Many thanks go out to KCGAC members Devin, Pete, Patrick and Brad for attending and helping with the demonstration. Thanks as well to new player Mike for his efforts in getting us there.
We put on a short demonstration of hurling, explained the sports, its roots and then had a few AOH members take a caman in hand and give it a go.
We then explained Gaelic Football and showed them how it works.
In the end we were soaked through and through and the AOH was very appreciative of our efforts. We made a lot of new friends today.

Though we tried... the water, the orange drink and even the beer could not slake our thirst nor cool us down. It was that hot. Yeah, I know. Even the beer.

Speaking of heat...
Training will be extremely warm tomorrow.
Forecaster's are calling for 97° (and that's in the shade).
It'll be even hotter on our Wicked Sweet Pitch™ out in the sun.

So prepare now.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Looks like we've entered the summer doldrums here in KCGAC Blogland.
Especially since the blogmeister has gone here:

Though, training continues, and on our Wicked Sweet Pitch™, in the midsummer heat, it's been pretty tough.

A few upcoming events for the KCGAC:

The Ancient Order of Hibernians is having it's homecoming Saturday, August 2nd. we'll be there.
August 16th... looks like we'll be traveling once again to play some out of townies... More info to come.
KCIF - the best fest around. We'll be leading a workshop. Look for us!
