Country Club Plaza Lights

A local tradition for almost 100 years, the Plaza Lights are a 15-block holiday spectacle on the famed Country Club Plaza, featuring thousands of glimmering, jewel-colored lights that accentuate every dome, tower and window of the Spanish-inspired shopping district.

The Plaza Lights shine daily from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., Thanksgiving through mid-January. All Plaza parking garages will be open and accessible throughout the Plaza Lights season.

The Annual Plaza Lighting Ceremony

The Plaza Lighting Ceremony returns! This year’s Evergy Plaza Lighting Ceremony kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26. The stage will be located at the intersection of Nichols Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Lee’s Summit Magic Tree

A celebratory landmark at I-470 and View High Drive in Lee’s Summit. Over the years, the lighting of the tree has offered sentiments of hope, goodness, peace, and love as visitors enjoy the simple elegance of the tree, take advantage of the beautiful and unique photography setting, as well as give to those who are in need in our community. The tree turns on at 6:30 p.m., November 24.

The Arboretum by Candlelight

Stroll along illuminated pathways to discover the magical Gnome and Fairy Villages, candlelit Marder Garden, and vibrant Children’s Garden, with musical performances throughout. The gardens glow with color, while candle-lit woodland walkways create a serene atmosphere. Trees, buildings, and bridges shimmer with thousands of lights. My story has a happy ending. And if you’ve ever had issues getting or staying pregnant, you know it doesn’t always turn out that way.

Doctors diagnosed me with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) at age 37. PMOS, which used to be called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is a hormonal condition that acts as a major roadblock to having a baby. Within the first few years of my marriage, I suffered three miscarriages.

I’ve never had regular menstrual cycles. Sometimes I’d go 30 days between periods; other times, months would pass. I remember seeing a doctor in my early 20s. I told him about my irregular periods, how nearly impossible it was for me to lose weight, and how my hair was thinning. I don’t remember all the details, because this was nearly 20 years ago, but I do recall having a sonogram. Afterward, the doctor concluded, since he didn’t see any cysts on my ovaries, that I didn’t have what was then diagnosed as polycystic ovary syndrome.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, my husband and I got married in Colorado, surrounded by the stunning mountains and safely distanced outdoors. After the ceremony the smog from a wildfire lifted, and a picture-perfect rainbow appeared. To me, that rainbow symbolized the hope that I continued to hold onto after each miscarriage.

But by spring of 2025, I was emotionally exhausted. Up until this point, I was seeing doctors outside of the University Health (UH) system. My husband met Dr. Lucy O’Mara, a UH obstetrician-gynecologist, and convinced me to just try one more doctor. And while it might have seemed like I was grasping at straws when I told Dr. O’Mara that I had a feeling I was not ovulating, she listened. She ordered a blood test for PMOS. When it came back positive, she started me on a prescription medication called Metformin, while typically used to treat patients with diabetes, it’s also used to treat symptoms of PMOS.

Not long after starting Metformin, I got pregnant again. As a way to remind me of having faith in the process, I hung small crystal prisms on the windows at home, so they’d catch the light. A rainbow always managed to find me when I needed hope most. I consider it God’s way of letting me know he was watching over me while I was pregnant.

Fast-forward to December 30, 2025, my beautiful, joyful, nap-avoiding son was born. He’s the best baby ever.

I share my story because I want other women with PMOS, or those who are experiencing infertility, to know it’s worth getting a second opinion. I’m not here to offer blind hope, but I encourage you to talk to your physician about what you’re experiencing. I wouldn’t have made it to this point without the unwavering support of my husband, family and fiercely loyal friends.

If you’re struggling with infertility, surround yourself with people who will lift you up when you don’t have the strength to carry yourself.
I hope when you find your rainbow, it’s shining bright.

Grocery stores, restaurants, and caterers offer full meals (or just the bird or sides) and there are also businesses offering turkeys, hams, and other main dishes. Many require you pick up the meal and reheat, but some are open on Thanksgiving and you can grab your meal hot and ready to serve.

There are also amazing bakeries offering pies and dinner rolls. Place your order ASAP, because many places are capping the number of orders they can take due to limited staff and supplies.

Hen House

Located on the Kansas side of the state line, Hen House’s nine locations have many options for your Thanksgiving meal. You can get a meal for two, six to 8, or 10-12 people. If turkey isn’t your thing, Hen House also offers ham and prime rib options. The have an a la carte menu, so if you just want a turkey or ham, you can order that without the rest of the meal. Make sure you check out the dessert options, too, they carry many varieties of Tippin’s pies!

Hy-Vee

There are over a dozen Hy-Vee locations across the metro where you can order a pre-cooked Thanksgiving meal. They have turkey, ham, and prime rib and lots of sides to choose from. Order a meal package, or items on the a la carte menu. Keep the holiday brunch packages in mind, too, for a leisurely morning after the holiday.

McKeever’s Market & Eatery

This grocer has locations in Lenexa and Lee’s Summit. They are offering meal packages as well as a la carte items, including whole hams, turkeys, and turkey breasts.

Price Chopper

There are store locations on both sides of the state line, and they offer really affordable options. If you are in the market for just a turkey, Price Chopper offers smoked and roasted turkeys. The meal options allow you to choose the sides and desserts your family prefers.

Price Rite Market & Deli “The Little Store”

This little store is located in the Northland. They’re offering deep fried or smoked turkey and all the sides.

Whole Foods Market

There are three locations in the metro area, two in Kansas and one in Missouri. If you are looking for a vegan or vegetarian meal, Whole Foods has some great options available.

Cracker Barrel

My friend swears by the Thanksgiving meals from Cracker Barrel. You can choose from the family dinner or family feast. The meals take about two hours to heat up. They also offer fresh baked holiday pies, including a cinnamon roll pie! Local Cracker Barrel locations can be found in Olathe, Belton, Independence, Liberty, and north of the river near Tiffany Springs.

Cupini’s

This restaurant in Westport typically serves Italian food, but for Thanksgiving it is offering a 15-pound turkey with sides.

French Market

This cafe in Prairie Village is offering meals for two for Thanksgiving, perfect for a small gathering. They also have sides for purchase for $16 a quart, as well as dessert and rolls.

The Market at Meadowbrook

This restaurant in Prairie Village offers fully cooked individual meals. Perfect if you are dining for one, or if you want to order several for your group. Order by November 20.

Brancato’s Catering

Brancato’s is offering a Thanksgiving meal for six or 10, with three convenient pickup locations across the city, or you can have it delivered for a fee. Place your order by November 18.

Fareway Meat Market

You can get a full Thanksgiving meal with sides and pies, or just a turkey or ham (or turducken!) to cook at home. There are three locations in the KC Metro.

As young girls, they used to visit The Fairy Princess each year at Kline’s Department Store in downtown Kansas City. It was a tradition they were able to keep alive when The Museum of Kansas City brought her back in 1987 after the department store closed in the 1970s.

I remember the visit fondly, excitedly waiting in the wings for it to be our turn — walking up to The Fairy Princess and telling her my one Christmas wish. I don’t remember what exactly I wished for, but I remember how I felt… awe and excitement of being in such a beautiful place surrounded with my cousins and visiting this magical princess. With a wave of her wand, she granted our wishes, and we departed with a gift. But most importantly, a memory that lasted forever.

I was thrilled to take my daughter to experience The Fairy Princess at The Museum of Kansas City with my mom and our friends.

I’m not sure who was more excited, the girls or the moms. The girls were entranced by the beautiful princess in a stunning white gown, and the moms were in awe of the Nell Hill’s holiday decor that transformed the Museum into a holiday wonderland. It was an enchanting evening where the girls played dress up and my mom and I were each able to relive just a bit of our childhoods through my daughter.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Museum of Kansas City hosting Fairy Princess magic. The event sells out each year and a $15 per child ticket is required.
