Our furry friends were wired to run, jump, climb, and yes, that also includes those unexpected 3 a.m. zoomies across your bed. While cats may spend much of their day lounging in sunny spots and taking cat naps, they still need regular physical exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy.

For indoor cats, especially, their environment plays a major role in how active they are each day. Without opportunities to climb, chase, explore, and play, boredom and inactivity can sometimes lead to weight gain, stress, and destructive behaviors. Since indoor cats rely on us to shape their environment, creating opportunities for daily movement is one of the best ways to support their overall well-being.

From interactive toys to climbing spaces and enriching activities, there are plenty of fun and simple ways to encourage your cat to stay active indoors while also helping them burn off some of that late-night zoomie energy.

Why Exercise Is Important for Indoor Cats

Indoor cats often live longer, healthier lives than their outdoor counterparts, but they also rely heavily on us to shape their environment and daily routines. Unlike outdoor cats that naturally spend time climbing, hunting, exploring, and patrolling their territory, indoor cats can easily become inactive without enough opportunities for movement and mental stimulation.

Regular exercise plays an important role in both a cat’s physical and mental well-being. Daily activity helps cats maintain a healthy weight, supports joint and heart health, and gives them an outlet to release built-up energy. Exercise also encourages natural hunting instincts through chasing, climbing, pouncing, and exploring, all behaviors that are deeply wired into feline behavior.

Without enough physical activity, indoor cats may become bored, stressed, or frustrated, which can sometimes lead to unwanted behaviors and long-term health complications such as:

Weight gain and feline obesity

Diabetes and other metabolic issues

Joint stiffness and reduced mobility

Increased stress and anxiety

Destructive scratching or chewing behaviors

Excessive nighttime zoomies and hyperactivity

Overgrooming or stress-related behaviors

Lower energy levels and reduced mental stimulation

Muscle loss and decreased overall fitness

5 Ways to Keep Your Furry Friends Moving

1. Turn Playtime Into a Daily Routine

Cats thrive on routines because predictable schedules help them feel safe and secure. Setting aside just 15–30 minutes each day for interactive play can help your cat burn energy, stay mentally stimulated, and reduce boredom-related behaviors. Toys like feather wands, laser pointers, crinkle balls, and toy mice encourage cats to chase, pounce, and stalk, helping mimic their natural hunting instincts. Short play sessions throughout the day are often more effective than one long session, and regularly rotating toys can help keep playtime fresh and exciting.

2. Encourage Climbing and Jumping

Your cat may be cute and cuddly, but deep down, they are still predators at heart. Climbing is a natural instinct for cats because it allows them to survey their surroundings, seek warmth, and observe potential “prey” from safe vantage points. Adding cat trees, wall shelves, window hammocks, or even creating space on top of furniture can encourage your cat to naturally climb, jump, and explore throughout the day. Small adjustments that create more vertical space can help indoor cats stay active while satisfying their instinct to perch up high and monitor their environment.

3. Use Food Puzzles and Treat Games

In the wild, cats had to work for their food by hunting, stalking, and chasing their prey. Indoor cats, on the other hand, usually eat on a predictable schedule with little effort required. Food puzzles and interactive treat games encourage cats to “work” for their food, helping increase movement while also stimulating their natural hunting instincts. These activities can also help slow down fast eating and provide important mental enrichment throughout the day. Another simple and fun option is hiding treats around the house, encouraging your cat to explore, sniff, and search for rewards using their natural predator instincts.

4. DIY Obstacle Courses

Encouraging movement does not have to mean constantly buying the latest cat toys. Most cat parents know their cat will probably end up playing with the cardboard box instead. Using household items like pillows, blankets, cardboard boxes, tunnels, and even rearranged furniture can create a fun DIY obstacle course that encourages your cat to climb, jump, crawl, and explore. Changing up their environment every once in a while naturally sparks curiosity and encourages indoor cats to move around and investigate their surroundings in new ways.

5. Interactive Toys

While there are several inexpensive DIY ways to keep your indoor cat moving, interactive toys are especially helpful for keeping cats active while you are away from home. Motion-activated toys, automatic laser toys, rolling ball toys, wand toys, and treat-dispensing puzzles all encourage cats to chase, pounce, swat, and hunt throughout the day while stimulating their natural predator instincts. Toys that move unpredictably help mimic prey behavior, encouraging more physical movement and mental engagement without requiring constant interaction from you. To keep things interesting, try rotating toys every few days and placing them in different areas around the home to encourage exploration and curiosity.

Bonus Tip (Cat Safe Plants)

Adding cat-safe plants like cat grass or catnip around your home can be another simple way to encourage movement and curiosity. Try placing these plants on shelves, window perches, or other elevated areas to motivate your cat to climb, jump, and explore. The scents naturally spark curiosity and encourage cats to move around their environment while engaging their senses.

Catios: A Purrfect Way to Keep Indoor Cats Active

Catios combine the best of both worlds by giving cats safe access to the outdoors while still providing the comfort and protection of indoor living. The outdoors naturally encourages movement through endless sights, sounds, smells, and stimulation that indoor cats often cannot fully experience inside the home. From climbing and jumping to bird watching, exploring, and lounging in the sun, catios encourage cats to stay physically active while keeping their minds engaged and curious throughout the day. To help create your own enriching outdoor space, exploring different catio ideas can be a great way to find inspiration for your cat’s needs and personality.

Keeping Your Cat Happy, Healthy, and Moving

Keeping your indoor cat active does not have to be complicated or expensive. Small daily changes like interactive play, climbing opportunities, food puzzles, obstacle courses, and enriching environments can make a huge difference in your cat’s overall physical and mental well-being. Since indoor cats rely heavily on us to shape their environment, creating opportunities for movement throughout the day helps encourage natural behaviors like climbing, chasing, stalking, exploring, and jumping.

Every cat has a different personality, energy level, and play style, so experimenting with different toys, activities, and enrichment ideas can help you discover what keeps your furry friend the most engaged. Some cats may enjoy chasing feather wands and climbing shelves, while others may prefer food puzzles, obstacle courses, or relaxing in the sun inside a catio. The goal is not perfection, but creating an environment that keeps your cat curious, stimulated, and moving regularly throughout the day.

At the end of the day, encouraging more movement helps support a healthier weight, reduces boredom-related behaviors, provides mental stimulation, and creates a happier indoor life for your cat. Even small changes to their daily routine can have a lasting impact on their overall health and happiness.5 Fun Ways to Keep Your Indoor Cat Moving

Bringing home a new cat is a joyful moment, but for your feline, it can feel like stepping into another world. Cats are creatures of routine, and a sudden change in sights, sounds, and smells can leave them feeling cautious or stressed. The good news? With a little patience and some thoughtful preparation, you can make their transition smoother and help them feel safe, secure, and truly at home. From setting up a cozy retreat to slowly introducing them to new spaces, these simple steps will build trust and comfort as your bond begins to grow.

Give Them a Safe Room First
When you first bring your cat home, it may be tempting to let them explore every corner right away. But for a cat, a brand-new environment can feel overwhelming. Starting small helps reduce stress and gives them a sense of security as they adjust.

Choose a quiet room in your home — a spare bedroom, office, or even a bathroom works perfectly — and set it up with all the essentials: a litter box, food and water bowls, a soft bed, and a few toys. This space becomes their safe haven, or “base camp,” where they can retreat anytime they feel uncertain.

Why a safe room helps your cat:
● Reduces overwhelm by keeping the environment manageable
● Creates a secure retreat when they feel stressed or unsure
● Helps establish routine quickly with food, water, and litter all in one spot

By giving your cat a designated starting point, you’re not only making them feel more comfortable, you’re also helping them build confidence before exploring the rest of the house at their own pace.

Create Hiding Spots and Cozy Retreats

Cats are naturally cautious creatures, and when they’re adjusting to a new environment, the ability to hide makes them feel much safer. Having a few cozy retreats gives your cat the chance to withdraw when they feel stressed, while still knowing they’re in a secure, loving home.

You don’t need fancy equipment to create these safe spots; even simple setups can make a big difference. A cardboard box in the corner, a covered cat bed, or a blanket draped over a chair can all provide the comfort of privacy. For playful personalities, a cat tunnel or pop-up cube doubles as both entertainment and a retreat.

Benefits of cozy hiding spots:
● Reduce stress and anxiety during the adjustment period
● Give cats control over their environment, which builds confidence
● Provide safe, comfortable places to rest and recharge

Use Familiar Scents to Build Comfort
Cats experience the world primarily through scent, and familiar smells can be one of the most powerful ways to reassure them in a new home. When everything around them looks and feels unfamiliar, a recognizable scent acts like an anchor, reminding them they are safe.

One simple way to do this is to leave an item with your scent — like a worn t-shirt or blanket — in their safe room. The smell of their new human helps your cat begin forming a bond and signals that this strange place belongs to both of you. In addition, products like pheromone sprays or diffusers (such as Feliway) can create a calming atmosphere that mimics the scent signals cats use to mark safe, happy territory.

By layering their environment with comforting scents, you’re helping your new cat feel grounded, secure, and ready to explore their surroundings with more confidence.

Gradual Introductions to the Rest of the Home

Cats naturally seek out high places, not only for play, but for safety and confidence. Being able to perch above their surroundings allows them to observe the world on their own terms, which is especially comforting when they’re adjusting to a new home. Offering vertical space gives your cat a sense of control while also enriching their environment.

Easy ways to add vertical space:
● A sturdy cat tree with multiple levels
● Wall-mounted shelves or climbing systems
● A cozy window perch for bird-watching
● The top of a safe bookshelf or cabinet with a blanket
● Cat hammocks that attach to windows or furniture

In addition to height, scratching outlets are essential. Scratching is more than just a way to sharpen claws; it’s how cats relieve stress, mark territory with their scent, and stretch their muscles. Providing scratching posts, pads, or cat furniture early on prevents unwanted scratching on couches or rugs, while also letting your cat settle in with healthy, natural behaviors.

By giving your cat both vertical and scratching options, you’re not only protecting your home, you’re also creating an environment where your cat can thrive.

Keep a Constant Routine
Cats are creatures of habit, and predictability goes a long way in helping them feel secure in a new environment. When your cat knows what to expect each day, it reduces stress and builds trust, making the transition into your home smoother.

Try to keep a regular schedule for the basics: feed them at the same times, scoop the litter box daily, and carve out dedicated moments for play and bonding. Even short, consistent play sessions can make your cat feel more connected and confident.

This kind of routine not only reassures your cat but also strengthens your relationship. Over time, your cat will begin to anticipate mealtimes, playtimes, and cuddle times, all comforting signals that they are safe and cared for.

Safe Ways for Cats to Enjoy the Outdoors
Many cats are naturally curious about the outdoors, the sounds of birds, the warmth of the sun, and the fresh scents drifting through an open window all spark their instincts. However, allowing cats to roam freely outside comes with serious risks, including traffic, predators, parasites, and exposure to toxins. For their safety and well-being, it’s best to avoid unsupervised outdoor access altogether.

The good news is that there are safe alternatives that let your cat enjoy the benefits of nature without the dangers. Some popular options include:
● Leash training: With patience and the right harness, some cats enjoy short, supervised walks.
● Supervised patio or yard time: Only when the space is fully secured and you’re present.
● Catios: Outdoor cat enclosures that give cats the freedom to lounge, climb, and watch wildlife in a fully protected space.

Be Patient and Let Them Set the Pace
Every cat is unique, and the time it takes to feel comfortable in a new home can vary widely. Some cats may start exploring within a couple of days, while others may take weeks before they feel fully secure. The most important thing you can do is give your cat the time and space they need to adjust at their own pace.

Avoid forcing interactions or rushing the process; let your cat come to you when they’re ready. Gentle encouragement, calm energy, and respect for their boundaries will help build trust far more quickly than trying to hurry things along.

With patience, consistency, and a thoughtfully prepared environment, your new cat will gradually begin to relax, explore, and show you their true personality. In time, that cautious newcomer will become a beloved family member, happily settled into their forever home.

Imagine a life confined to four walls, with little to no variety, stimulation, or excitement. For many indoor cats, this is their reality. While keeping cats indoors ensures their safety from outdoor dangers, it often comes at the expense of their mental and physical well-being. Cats are natural explorers and hunters, instinctively drawn to the novelty, challenges, and sensory stimulation that nature provides. Without access to these, they can experience boredom, stress, and even health issues.

This is where catios, or “cat patios,” come in. These innovative structures offer a safe and enriching way for cats to enjoy the outdoors while reaping the mental and physical benefits of natural stimulation. In this article, we’ll explore the importance of cat enrichment, the consequences of neglecting it, and how catios provide the perfect solution to ensure a happier, healthier, and more fulfilled life for your feline companion.

The Importance of Enrichment for Cats

Just as humans thrive on stimulation and enrichment, so do cats. In the wild, nature provides novelty and challenges that engage their instincts and keep them mentally and physically active. Without these experiences, indoor cats often face boredom, stress, and even health issues. Enrichment for a cat involves providing resources and activities that encourage their natural behaviors—such as hunting, climbing, scratching, and exploring. By engaging their minds and bodies, you can help your cat lead a more fulfilled and balanced life.

Mental and Physical Consequences of a Lack of Enrichment

Mental Impacts:

Stress Due to Boredom: Leads to destructive behaviors such as excessive vocalizing or scratching furniture and other materials in the home.

Depression/Anxiety: Cats may become low in energy, lose interest in play, and withdraw from social interactions with you or other feline family members. This can manifest as over-grooming, hiding, or clinginess.

Aggression/Irritability: Low stimulation can result in irritability and aggressive behavior toward people or other cats or animals in the home.

Physical Impacts:

Overeating and Obesity: A lack of enrichment can cause boredom-driven overeating, which, paired with insufficient exercise, often leads to weight gain and health risks like joint stress and diabetes.

Muscle Weakness: Without consistent physical activity, cats can lose muscle tone and agility, thus contributing to lethargy.

Excessive Grooming: Compulsive licking can cause skin issues and hair loss over time.

Cat owners must remain mindful and vigilant of these warning signs and ensure proper health and wellness for their cats. To prevent these issues, make sure your cats have access to an environment that promotes physical and mental engagement.

What Makes a Catio an Ideal Solution?

A catio provides the best of both worlds: the safety of an enclosed environment and stimulation of the outdoors. These safe and secure outdoor spaces allow cats to enjoy fresh air, natural sights, and the excitement of exploring a new space. Catios come in a variety of sizes and designs, from window box extensions to elaborate multi-level enclosures. Regardless of the design, the benefits to your cat’s mental and physical health are immense.

Mental Health Benefits of Catios

Natural Stimulation: Because cats can see out into their environments, they have a front-row seat to all things nature. This allows them to engage their hunting instincts and keeps their minds active.

Reduced Stress: Fresh air and sunlight, an amazing combination. This works wonders on combating depression/ anxiety and preventing boredom.

Curiosity Fulfillment: Catios encourages their exploratory instincts without exposing them to outdoor dangers.

Physical Health Benefits of Catios

Encourages Exercise: Catios typically include climbing platforms, ramps, and scratching posts, which encourage physical activity.

Supports Weight Management: Increased movement in an invigorating domain helps prevent obesity and other associated health issues.

Improves Muscle Tone: With improved exercise and weight management, cats strength, agility, and flexibility will naturally increase.

Incorporating Enrichment Within a Catio
A well-designed catios that is catered to your cat’s needs will lead to wellness and fulfillment for your cat. Here are some ideas to make your catio even more engaging:

Vertical Spaces: Install shelves, ramps, and perches to facilitate climbing and provide different viewing points to the great outdoors.

Interactive Elements: Include dangling toys, puzzle feeders, and scratching posts to keep your cat occupied.

Natural Elements: Implement potted cat-safe plants, such as cat grass or catnip, for your cats to nibble on or add in textured mats for your cat to remain intrigued.

Sensory Stimulation: Create visual and auditory interest by placing bird feeders or wind chimes near the catio. The sights and sounds of nature will be enticing for your cat.

Cozy Retreats: Provide soft beds or hammocks for resting and observing their surroundings.

Catios and Stress-Free Transitions
Moving to a new home can be stressful for felines, especially if they’re shy or anxious. A catio offers a controlled space where cats can acclimate to their surroundings at their own pace. By providing an oasis that blends safety and invigoration, catios helps reduce negative mental and physical outcomes.

For cats with high energy or those prone to boredom, a catio can also serve as a positive outlet for their energy, thus reducing destructive behaviors, over-grooming, or overeating indoors. Over time, this balance of stimulation and relaxation fosters a happier and healthier cat.

A Gateway to a Healthier, Happier Cat
Catios are more than just an outdoor enclosure; they’re a gateway to a richer, more energizing life for your cat. With the safety of indoor living in combination with ever-changing outdoor surroundings, catios help cats stay mentally engaged, physically active, and emotionally balanced. Whether your cat is shy, energetic, or somewhere in between, a catio can transform their world and enhance their quality of life.

Investing in a catio isn’t just a gift to you or your cat—it’s a commitment to your cat’s happiness, health, and well-being. With a catio catered to your cat’s unique personality, your cat will most assuredly live a rich, full, and meaningful life.

The 3-3-3 Rule is a general guideline. Every pet is unique and will adjust to its new home at different paces. Patience is always key!

In the first 3 Days, your new pet may feel overwhelmed, scared, and unsure of what is going on. They may not feel comfortable being themselves, and this is very normal. Monitor your pet’s stress, and give them time and space to adjust to their new home.

In the first 3 Weeks, your new pet will start to settle into their home and begin to feel more comfortable. They will begin to realize that this place could be their new forever home. As they become more comfortable, they may begin to test the boundaries of their surroundings. Be patient with your pet and correct them with training to help them learn.

Within 3 Months, your pet will have finally started to feel comfortable in their new home. A bond of love and trust will have formed, and your pet will understand they are a part of a family now!

As always, if you have any questions about behavior or medical concerns, please contact your primary vet.

KHS and City of Wichita Aim to Help Public Understand the Difference Between KHS and WAS

The Kansas Humane Society (KHS) and Wichita Animal Services (WAS) are excited to unveil a bright, new facelift to the front of their shared property in an effort to help customers and pet owners find their way.

Since the two began sharing the property in 2009, the large columns out front were designed to point people to the appropriate entrance that fits their needs. However, these way-finders have often been overlooked, leaving many in the community still confused about which shelter they need to go to.

To summarize the services: To help alleviate that confusion and better serve the public, KHS and WAS came together to replace the text on the front columns to bright, attention-grabbing letters. Plus, KHS is putting out a new, informational graphic that helps explains the services WAS provides, the services KHS provides, how the two groups are different, but also how they work together.

Through these combined efforts, KHS and WAS hope to help customers and pet owners get to the place they need to be quickly, which could result in being reunited with a pet more quickly, getting help for an abused animal, or even adopting a new friend.

If you FOUND a stray, you’ll need to take it to WAS.

If you have LOST a pet, you’ll need to go to WAS to look for it.

If you need to LET GO of a pet you own but can no longer keep, you need to do that at KHS.

If you want to ADOPT, you can do that at KHS.

If you need to report ANIMAL ABUSE, call WAS.

Together, we help care for thousands of animals in our community every year and each organization is a valuable resource to our area. We hope with the public’s help, and better understanding of how we work, we can continue to grow and serve more animals every year.

To contact KHS with questions about services, please call (316) 524-9196. To contact WAS with questions about their services, please call (316) 350-3360.
