Zubaida Tariq Laid To Rest In Karachi

Renowned Karachiite, a popular chef and television personality Zubaida Tariq was laid to rest in Karachi on Friday.
Zubaida Tariq, fondly known as Zubaida Apa, passed away late on Thursday night after a brief illness. Her funeral prayers were offered at Sultan Masjid in Karachi's Defence Housing Authority area.
Zubaida Apa was famous for her culinary skills and housekeeping advice (totkas). A household name, she hosted several widely viewed culinary shows and wrote cookbooks.

LONDON: Pakistan’s most admired and versatile painter, calligrapher Sadequain’s art work ‘Crucifixion’ made history for Pakistani art when it was sold a record breaking £118,750 (around 16 million Pakistani rupees) The painting was initially estimated of around £60,000-90,000.
A bidder anonymously offered top price for the artwork of legendary Pakistani artist Sadequain, whose work has won worldwide acclaim for its depth and meaning. To mark Pakistan’s 70th Independence Day, international auction house, Bonhams, dedicated its sale entirely to Pakistani art and sourced work of 21 Pakistani artists.
Tahmina Ghaffar, Bonhams Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art Specialist, commented while speaking to Geo News: “As proud supporters of Pakistani art for numerous years, Bonhams is delighted with the results achieved at our first Art of Pakistan sale. The enthusiastic bidding in the room, on the phone and online for the top lots demonstrates the increasing demand for, and recognition of, Pakistani art by serious collectors. The Sadequain sold for £118,750; this is a world record price for the artist in Pounds.
“Pakistani heritage is far reaching and untethered. Conceived as a country of refuge and sanctuary, with new residents came new languages, foods and customs. Pakistan’s art is complex and challenging and the country has carved its own artistic identity.”
Seemah Niaz, founder of Unicorn Art Gallery, told this scribe that Sadequain is amongst the greatest of Pakistani artists. “He won critical acclaim at the global level. He was awarded the 'Laureate de Paris' at the France Biennale in 1961. He produced a number of cross-hatched self-portraits such as ‘Crucifixion’ and showed something to the world which was not seen before. He was a Sufi who didn’t want money in his life; he gave away his works as gifts to the people he liked or those who were kind to him. He was not impressed by anyone; he was a conceptual artist who has his own unique originality and technique.”
Seemah Niaz said that the record sale of Sadequain’s work was a “landmark” figure of a Pakistani artist. “It’s a huge figure in the sense that Indian middle class and industrialists support their artists but that doesn’t happen in Pakistan. Indian artist MF Husain regarded him with great reverence and when Sadequain visited India on occasions MF Husain met him in Amrita and showered his praises on Sadequain.

Seemah Niaz also said there is a need in Pakistan to value the artists and their work, and declare it as national treasure. She called on the government to fix a portion of the annual budget for the promotion of arts in Pakistan.
Other prominent Pakistani artists whose work was sold at the auction included: Ustad Allah Bux, Eqbal Mehdi, A.Q. Arif, Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Waseem Ahmed, Shazia Sikander, Kiran Saeed, Attiya Shaukat, Mudassar Manzoor, Sadequain, Anwar Jalal Shemza, Anna Molka Ahmed, Ahmed Parvez, Ali Imam, Bashir Mirza, Mansoor Rahi, Hajra Zuberi, Lubna Latif Agha, Mansur Aye, Tassaduq Sohail and Ismail Gulgee.

Jimmy Engineer's painting on permanent display at China's National Art Museum

Beijing: China’s National Art Museum is going to permanently display a painting of renowned Pakistani artist Jimmy Engineer. The artist who is also a social worker handed over one of his rare painting to the curator of the China National Art Museum on Wednesday. Pakistani Ambassador to China Masood Khalid was also present there with other officials from the Embassy of Pakistan and National Art Museum.

Speaking at the event, Khalid Maood lauded Jimmy Engineer for encouraging a soft image of Pakistan, adding that the artist’s first exhibition last week attracted Chinese audience and received appreciation. He said, the paintings of the versatile Pakistani artist had been selected for display by different museums of the world while he had received a number of national and international medals and awards as recognition of his artwork.

Soraya Sikander Displays Her New Work ' Inscape ' at Unicorn Gallery Lahore

Zaha Hadid, the world renown architect passed away on 31 March 2016.
Zaha Muhammad Hadid, born in Baghda, Iraq on 31 October, 1950 was the first women and and the first muslim architect to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004. Her extraordinary talent is reflected in her works that include MAXXI National Museum of the 21st. century Arts (Rome), Bridge Pavilion, Maggie's Centres, Contemporary Arts Center, Sheikh Zayed Bridge and many more.

Shahid Rassam and Kolkata Museum: The Conflict

Shahid Rassam, one of most famous Pakistani artists is upset a Kolkata museum, which had agreed to exhibit his works on Ghalib’s poetry done in collaboration with Indian poet Gulzar, cancelled the event at the last minute. The museum claims they were misled into believing that Gulzar would attend.

Shahid Rassam had planned to hold his exhibition, titled ‘Ghalib and Gulzar’, at Victoria Memorial Hall (VMH) Museum on February 20. Around 50 paintings and four murals were prepared for the exhibition in which Gulzar had apparently selected Ghalib’s verses for Rassam to paint.

“Out of 50, 36 of these paintings were to be exhibited at VMH Museum including murals as big as 25-by-15 feet,” Rassam told The Express Tribune. “It took me four years to work on this project and the sudden cancellation at the last moment over email is uncalled for,” he said. The artist also shared the news at a press conference in Karachi on February 28.

National Museum of Pakistan: Information for Visitors, Tourists and Scholars

National Museum of Pakistan is situated in the heart of Karachi, the cultural as well as financial hub of Pakistan. Established in 1951 in the historic building of Frere Hall it was shifted in 1970 to the present site in Burns Garden on Dr. Zia-ud-din Road. It has 14 galleries including Proto History, Pre-history, Freedom Movement, Gandhara Gallery, Quran Gallery etc. The museum is fully devoted to Pakistan's cultural heritage. It depicts Indus Civilization artefacts, Gandhara sculptures, Islamic art, miniature paintings, ancient coins and manuscripts documenting Pakistan's political history. The Ethnology gallery exhibits the salient features of different ethnicities living in the geographical boundaries of Pakistan.

National Museum contains a collection of over 60,000 old coins, hundreds of well preserved sculptures, an enormous number of Arabic, Urdu and Persian manuscripts many of which are illuminated and illustrated. It also offers over 70,000 publications, books and other reading material of the Archaeology and Museums department. It hosts various exhibitions on national days and other occasions and has an auditorium with 250 seating capacity.

How to get there: From Karachi airport a metro cab can be hired that may charge 450 to 500 rupees for single journey. Pearl Continental hotel, Moven Pick hotel (formerly Sheraton hotel), Marriott hotel are around the museum at a walking distance.

The nearby neighborhoods are Burns Road which is one of the famous food streets of Karachi. It offers a variety of foods.
Museum timings are from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM with a one hour break from 1:00 PM, Museum closed on Wednesday for visitors.
Entry Fee for foreign visitors is PKR 200.00

For Pakistani visitors PKR 10.00, Students dressed in uniform with teachers are free but must applied in advance.

Born in Mir Pur Khas jn 1954 Mohammad Rustam Khan is largely a self-taught artist who achieved recognition through his extraordinary work. Rustam is a natural, God gifted artist without any formal training from any art institute.

Rustam is mainly interested in portraits and realistic work however he has worked almost in all fields including murals, mosaics, and even in 3D models.

Unicorn Gallery is presenting a retrospective exhibitionof the late Master artist Laila Shahzada on 10th December 2014.

Laila Shahzada a pioneer of modern art painting in Pakistan, was one of Pakistan's most internationally renowned artists and one of the first women painters in Pakistan to gain international recognition with exhibitions around the world.

LAILA SHAHZADA RETROSPECTIVE (1926-1994) is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of Pakistani Master artist Laila Shahzada on her twentieth death anniversary and features paintings from various series such as ‘Driftmood’, ‘Mohenjo-Daro’, ‘Skardu mountains’ - over a period of decades.
