So it turns out that Imaginary Daughter has been nominated for Best Completed Comic for the DrunkDuck Awards 2010, and I couldn’t be happier about it. Check it out!

This took me by surprise as I’ve already said not two paragraphs ago, but I wanted to draw something, and so here you go:

Well, that took a bit longer than expected. As a compensation, I offer you no less than twenty lost Daughters in this little Labyrinth image, as well as a very questionably dressed Father.

I doubt I’ll win either award. In fact, right now my position in the awards are “near last” and “dead last”. But that’s OK, because I’ve checked out the other nominated comics and they are excellent, so even being in the same list as them is already a big honour. So I’ll just thank the Smack Jeeves Awards Committee for being so kind to ID

The Neverending Story was one of the finest children’s films of the 80′s, though I heard the book is much better, and the movies themselves form a neat trilogy slide. This decade was, luckily enough, the one that contained my childhood, so there’s that. Also, the music is fantastic; to this day, hearing the Happy Flight theme gives me goosebumps.

I noticed that there’s an emergent theme here, and it is that of the coolest rides we all wanted as children. Hoverboards, Cyclones, Powerloaders, Lightcycles, and, of course, Luckdragons, were all things (and beings) we wanted to ride back then… and even now.

I’m so glad I included a shapeshifter in this comic, I totally should include on the next one as well. Speaking of which, let’s move on to some pieces of news.

First of all, and funnily enough giving the title of today’s post, Imaginary Daughter is finally ending, by which I mean that after a couple more pictures that I’ll post next week, no more will be posted again. In fact, and should everything go according to plans (which never happens, but whatever), I expect that after next week the next thing you’ll hear about ID is that the book is ready for mass consumption (hah!). And that should be somewhere around the end of this month, or next month perhaps. Keep your fingers crossed if you are one of the three people that still wants to buy it. Advice for webcomic artists: prepare your pages for printing as you create them, and make sure you finish the book a good couple of months before you finish posting your strips.

As for that next comic I mentioned before, right now it’s been put on hold for various reasons, chiefly that I want to work in a new (secret) project, which is in a way also a very old project. There will be more news about that as they happen. Keep checking this site for updates, though perhaps it’d be better to just subscribe to the feed / get updates by email / follow me on twitter / whatever works best for you.

Possibly the only vehicle more desired in the 80′s than either a hoverboard or a Cyclone was the famed Lightcycle. Of course you were always at risk of being crushed by a Recognizer, but you can’t have it all.

I remember being about six and watching Tron in the theatre with my father, staring in awe as Flynn rode the Solar Sailer.

We were all young and innocent once.

Easily one of the best mangas I’ve ever read, Chrno Crusade (AKA Chrono Crusade) is also one of the worst animes I’ve ever watched. Go figure!

What I’m saying is, you need to read this one. And if you’ve watched it, doubly so.

Perhaps I like it so much because, while rocking from beginning to end, the ultimate payoff is both spectacular, satisfying, and utterly bittersweet. And if you liked Imaginary Daughter, then bittersweet stuff should be right up your alley.

But please don’t watch the anime. It was made by people who hate people.

Man, I’m such a child of the 80′s. Not that I’m the only one around here.

That decade sure produced some great series. My own little story is that I was too young so my parents wouldn’t let me go to the theatre when Ghostbusters came around, so I had to make do with the game. Back then, computer games were much less scary than their film counterparts, of course.

I was pretty obsessed with the music theme. And in that note, let’s end this post:

Another partial request, and the final one, today’s image sees a communion of sorts between two of the most beloved mecha series, represented here by Father in a VR-052 Battler Cyclone from Robotech, and Daughter as a Mecha Musume (duh), with an armour heavily borrowed from the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam from Gundam Wing.

Wow. That’s a lot harder to read if you aren’t a complete geek.

Anyway, I’d like to dedicate this little drawing to Carl Macek, who passed away recently, and without whose work our geek lives would be a lot poorer.

I mentioned Back to the Future some time ago. However, there are valleys and valleys. You could say that this particular one had numbers attached, and those numbers where 9.9, 9.8 and 10.

To put it in internet slang, the 80′s were so full of win!

The Little Prince is a book that has accompanied me since my childhood, and reading its magical pages only gets more sweet, as well as more bitter, as the years go by. This is a book that everybody should have in their bookshelves, from an early age.

In today’s drawing, Daughter portrays a bashful Prince as he faces his rose again. This was partly inspired by Back Home, a very brief game by my buddies from killabunnies.

Another highly recommended (by me!) series, Firefly will not, unfortunately, take you much time to go through, owing to the fact that TV executives are bun tyen-shung duh ee-dway-ro.

Anyway, here you have Daughter as Captain Mal Reynolds, a space badass if there was ever one.

Watch this shiny series (and movie) now, yo.

I’m sure many of you have at least heard of the Discworld series of books by Terry Pratchett. And if you aren’t, I suggest you start getting acquainted with them now, because they are bloody brilliant.

For those of you who do know your wizzards from your black-ribboners, I present you with Daughter dressing up as a male soldier, taken from what is perhaps my favourite Discworld book (though it is so difficult to pick just one when you have such heavy-hitters like Nightwatch, Small Gods or Going Postal lying around). Enough said, go and read these books already, will you?
