In the first half of may, I had a great opportunity to shoot pictures over the span of three days at the teambuilding event of the Compagnia di Farabutti, a Polish battle larping team. While the weather itself was not the warmest for the first two days, on the final day, the day of the main photoshoot, the sun graced us with its full glory, when we set off to the nearby Kabacki Forest, a truly lovely forest reservation to the south from Warsaw.

This is a new larp, which has already existed for some time. Unfortunately all the previous instances were colliding with other parts of my schedule. Finally for this, fifth time I was able to meet the organizers’ request and document the event. Because it was already a fifth instance of the larp I wasn’t that afraid to experiment a little by using a camera I’d never used before. It goes without question that I had my regular equipment as well, but I aimed to use the borrowed X-T2 and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

Not only did a few dozen swordsmen decide to go on a rampage at this year’s Battle of Lipany, but also the weather decided to be crazy. It has begun with really hot summer temperatures, when almost everyone tried to stay in shades and drink a lot of fluids. But that wasn’t enough; exactly when the battle was supposed to start the heavens opened and a couple tons of water and even hail fell on us.

This weekend a western larp Hell on Wheels inspired by a TV show of the same name took place not far from Humpolec. Considering the price of the airplane ticket I mustparis-photo ask – is there anyone else willing to go along? Car is cheaper than airplane when you have at least two passengers. It doesn’t matter if you wish to visit Paris Photo or not, you can just visit Paris.

Next year will be the 580th anniversary of the battle of Lipany, so everyone is expecting that the next year’s reenactment will be much bigger than this year. But even when it isn’t a rounded number it can still be good. All of it, the battle, the historical encampment and everything else was worth visiting. We can even say that this year’s event was preparing visitors for the next, more funded battle.

I used the FXCamera app to take them, since dragging a real Polaroid camera around just for these moments was a bit too much, especially when my smartphone is quite good at faking them. And real Polaroid cameras and their present substitutes from The Impossible Project are a tad expensive.

Long Day’s Journey into Night (Cesta dlouhým dnem do noci) is a four-hour chamber LARP based on Eugene O’Neill’s personal drama. It deals with old pain, breaking the characters’ mental taboos, immense suffering and solitude amongst your loved ones. It focuses on a vicious circle of accusations, flagellation and new accusations. The characters have no goals or quests they should fulfil. They are what they are; and that’s what the LARP uses.

Once it was called Pragocon, now it’s called PragoFFest, but anyway it’s the third biggest convention in the Festival fantazie group. It took place last weekend (same weekend as Taverna ball) in Prague. I was invited there to make come documentary photograp, the invitation was made by one of the players of the larp Střepiny who was participating in organizing the RPG Aliance theme line. This line wasn’t made up just of usual lectures: as a bonus they had a fire-show that I was mainly supposed to focus on.

Many years ago, Drak and Mirwen started to organize Camelots, closing the outdoor larps season. Camelots, as could be inferred from the name, were focused on the Arthurian legends and every year was a little different. In 2007, a new king had to be found amongst the dozens of Uther’s bastards, next year, the Picts attacked Camelot and the last year was inspired by Monty Pythons.

The first time I’ve heard about ~~Geas~~ was at this year’s Odraz, and it intrigued me at first sight. I was not (and I am still not) used to the fact that it might be possible for larpers to obtain a whole castle, which is not even in ruins – Zamek Grodziec. The propagation materials created for their first game also looked really good.

Hussites under Zbořený Kostelec have by now become a tradition, but a vampire under Zbořený Kostelec? That’s a first. Originally I thought I was seeing things because of the terrible heat at the ford, but the photographs are a proof that this year’s battle really contained one vampire.

First there were Christmas and visit to my parents, then a meeting with ex-schoolmates from Prague Photographical School, new camera, Skyrim, new server, common cold, Star Wars The Old Republic, common cold again… there were too many things and I wanted to sleep sometimes.

I have already thought about visiting Paris Photo, but when the French officialy announced the date of this year’s event, it was inevitable. I couldn’t resist so I decided to go there. The exhibition is open for the public for four days and every day there is a different accompanying programme. Therefore, I wanted to be in the city all four days and see which day the weather would be most suitable and the programme most attractive to go there.

I have spent the last month mostly by fighting the bureaucracy, although I personally didn’t do much of the fighting, since I have long ago become used to hiring specialist for my administrative battles. Ayway, it seems that after a month of overcoming difficulties we have finally won and the register of economic entities has a new subject. That, however, is not the end of the war, it’s more of a beginning. The foundation of a company itself is not enough, it’s necessary to use it for something, and this was just the first battle. In this war I don’t fight just the state administration, but also my own laziness.

Mythago for the second time

For me, this year wasn’t good for larping and Mythago was my first LARP this year, not counting the Prague Larpweekend. And it’s only my and my calendar’s fault. I don’t remember last time that I’d have so many colliding events and when we add the pneumonia, which prevented me from going to Bezkrálí… but at least I was able to get to Mythago.

EBooks that aren’t in Czech republic – that’s how you can describe the publication I’m writing about. If I went to any local bookstore looking for photography books, I would not be able but to wonder if everyone want only books like Tutorial to Wedding photography, Street photography in ten easy steps, Mastering time, aperture and ISO in three minutes. As if a technically perfect photograph – and these books without a huge amount of practise don’td help to produce any – could actually move anyone. They speak only about HOW, but not about WHY.

This year’s Notorburg was neither too rainy, nor too hot – so as to the weater it was really cosy. But no matter how much hotter Notorburg 2010 was, it was also better. Craft & Vision is a project and a web from David duChemin, production – I have already written about two of his books „ Within the Frame“ and „ Visionmongers.“ Craft & Vision is also the place where the eBooks written by David and other authors are sold. These eBooks have something between twenty and forty pages and they cost 5$ each. As to the price, David once said: “it’s cheaper than Starbucks coffee, it lasts longer and you can even use it repeatedly.” I’m not sure where his quote ends and mine starts, for quite some time now, but I think it describes the price of these eBooks really well.

I can’t catch up, I can’t manage, it already should have been done - I’m talking about a small photo book in which I would like to show how LARP looks in the Czech Republic. Originally, it’s a school assignment which slightly exceeded the limits of the original intention and gained the delay. Moreover, I need a lot of time not only to work, but also for the ongoing recovery of my organism from pneumonia, which makes me sleep more than I used to.

David duChemin is a man representing one particular photographic way which he introduces in his workshops and his books. I plan to write about his first book, Within the Frame: The Journey of Photographic Vision, which has already come out in Czech under the name ” V hledáčku fotografa: Jak na fotografie s příběhem”. However, I am going to write about the English version, because I got it from the author himself during the Creative Live workshop. I have already written something about my luck in here.

Various effects, a thousand elephants… ehm performers and much more spectators, a historical camp and an almost historical market. Battle units from different time periods attend the Battle of Libušín – this means it isn’t as much historical battle, rather than a battle of historical troops, and it’s mostly about meeting your friends who prefer to reenact a different era than you do.

Odraz is an annual conference with four years’ tradition which took place in Horní Bradlo from the 15th to the 17th of April. The space for the conference was granted by a sport facility in a lost area with almost no cell phone signal and public transport – the bus goes there about three times a day except weekends.

When I was planning my trip to Bretagne, I saw it as a pleasant trip without any hurry. I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I imagined that 70 minutes for the transfer between the airplane and TGV would be a sufficient amount of time. Well, I was warned that according to some Internet forum it is possible, but it is on edge. Well, if it is possible, I can make it, I told to myself. The fact I didn’t take to account is that I can’t speak a word in French and therefore I won’t be able to read any signs.

I was told that I have won the second position in a photography competition named Draci existují (Dragons exist), during my stay in the Spa Jeseník. This competition took place on Coniáš 2010 convention. The theme was photography of dragons who hide in our reality.
