One of the good things that happend on LGM, was that Richard Hughes and Kai-Uwe Behrmann found time to speak with each other and found a way how they can work together in the future. That brought a new spirit to OpenICC and made a lot of people happy. Since then there was a lot of work on metadata key and also on some discussions about color managed printing. But this is mostly theoretical work and both like to write also code. So time to move forward there also.

There was since a long time the idea to an Hackfest on color management stuff. On LGM we had all three together also the time to speak about this topic, and we all had the feeling that would move color management on the free desktop forward. So now we made some plans and the hackfest will be in November. As you can see Kai-Uwe and also Hughsie blogged already about it.

The hackfest will be from 16th-19th of November 2012 in Brno, RedHat offices. There is already a wiki page for the hackfest. Planned is to get some experts in color management together with authors of applications, also working color managemed printing, move some browsers forward on this topic and also work on color management in toolkits. Some people from QT showed already interest.

Saturday the 5th of May was the last day of Libre Graphics Meeting and also of the Linuxwochen Vienna. It was the day of Beastie and Puffy invasion, because the european BSDday.eu was also in the venue. In the morning I had again a Inkscape workshop on the Linuxwochen, which was better visited as the one on the day before. So I had no time for the talks at the Libre Graphics Meeting. After a short lunch break a second workshop followed. It was a workshop about the whole workflow for preparing magazines/books and of course working with free software. Planned was to prepare a book with all the paper of LGM in that workshop, but I only got 3 of them. So on the end it was more a BoF-session about all the work which have to be done preparing a magazin or book. Thats already a lot, book sizes, book layout, font decission and all that.

After the workshop my voice was gone at least until I had a drink. But I needed not really my voice anymore that day. I joined Pete Ippels talk Transitional Work Flow For Artists Making The Libre Graphics Leap and and It Builds Character a talk from Nathan Willies introducing new free software tools for font development. After that the LGM ended and there was a short discussion where the next one should be. So next LGM will be in Madrid and there are some voices doing it in Asia. And thats problematic, there are to much people who like to protect what they have, an LGM in Europe or Montreal. But we will see…

The day ended for most of us in the same restaurant we went on tuesday evening, so that meant “Schnitzel” for the most of us. This time the crowed was bigger as in tuesday so we needed another table extra. But we stayed not to long as some of us, already started there travelling home directly from there or at the next morning.

Nicu managed already to upload most of his pictures and Mizmo did also made a bigger upload. For Taticas pictures I think we have to wait for a few days, she is in “zombie mode” after her arrival at home yesterday evening.

Friday the 4th of May was the 3rd day of Libre Graphics Meeting and the 2nd of Linuxwochen Vienna. The day of the goat invasion or the day I had not really fun. Why, I missed all the talks I was really interested in. For example Johan Engelen with the development of Powerstroke in Inkscape. I missed them because I had at the same time an Inkscape workshop on Linuxwochen. The workshop wasnt so crowed as they normally are. Because it was friday in the morning, a lot of people have to work. But there was no other time slot left. So I couldnt enjoy all the interesting talks from the GIMP world.

At 3pm was a bigger slot with an panel: Doing Design In The World Of FLOSS which Mizmo, Allan Day and me was planned for, Peter Sikking joined us also. The problem sitting on the end means, very often the points are taken. After that I skipped one talk and watched later Nicus talk about Free Culture meets Free Software: Wiki Loves Monuments and after that a video presentation from Bassam Kurdali about the Tube movie project. I had an conversation with Bassam a week before LGM started about that, because there was the idea to do a free movie session on the Linuxwochen after party on friday. But before we went to that, there was another q/talk planned like the day before. This time about open hardware, Pete Ippel talked about the MilkyMist One, Richard Hughes about the ColorHug and normally Mickey Lauer was planned but he didnt make it, so Zoltan joined the round and talked about the Nanonote.

After the q/talk I played again the role of a tourist guide and we went to the MuseumsQuartier. That is one of the places I like most, there is a lot of art and its also a place for Geeks as there is the quartier 21 for digital art and life style. The Linuxwochen after party wasnt invaded from LGM people like Nicu wrote, it was actually planned this way. Normally the after party its just a bigger table with arround 20 people as the most speakers are on there way home after there talk. Thats a problem of a longer event, you will never get all together. I tried to show some free movies, but it was already to late for that. On the social event Elisa de Castro Guerra went to me and used one of the few chances to speak with me, it was actually funny, because she works also for Doudou Linux, where I did last year made a submission to the Logo Contest and we had time to talk a little bit about it. Later we went for a couple of hours to the Metalab, Viennas hackerspace, which isnt far from the MQ and then home.

The 2nd of May was the first day of the 7th edition of Libre Graphics Meeting, I by myself call it the “Color Freaks Day” because most of the topics at this day scheduled talks was about color management. But the day started for Tatica and me with a little shopping trip. As I said in the last blogpost, our appartment was at a really cool place and we had not only cafes outside, we had directly opposite an supermarket and 20 meters away the next one. So we managed to get things like coffee, fruit juices, coffee cream and milk. And there was even a bakery so there was fresh Croissants at the breakfast. After a cup of coffee we all went to the venue, which was a 20 minutes walk.

As I mentioned before, the first day of Libre Graphics Meeting started with a lot of talks arround color management topics. The first talk was Richard Hughes: ColorHug – The Open Hardware Colorimeter, followed by Kai-Uwe Behrmann: Evolving Concepts for Colour Management, Color Management in SVG2 from Chris Lilley from W3C, and then again Kai-Uwe Behrmann with Colour Management a la Greek and Richard Hughes: colord – Linux Color Management Framework, One Year On. Last in this round was myself: Taxi DB – Call A Cab To Bring The Colors. What we learned at this day, is that there is not really a good documentation for users about starting with color management, so many beginners have problems. Hopefully Kai-Uwe Behrmanns and mine talk at LinuxTag will helpful for that. When I understood Chris Lilley right then naming of colors in SVG2 will be possible so then transferring spot color names will be possible. For me it was the chance to introduce Hughsie to TaxiDB. He showed interest in using it but not in the way we thaught, but we managed to find a way over the week, using it for his needs and also for what I thaught TaxiDB should be, so a win-win. On the end Richard and Kai-Uwe managed to talk with each other and there is a new begin on OpenICC. The day ended for us with an picnic, Mizmo, Emichan, Tatica and me cooked and we went to the Danube channel, which was also not far away from our appartment. The crowed became again bigger as Allan Day, Garret LeSage, Jakub Steiner, Jiri Eischmann and some others joined us. Was really a nice get together.

In knapp einem Monat ist es wieder soweit, Europas größter Event rund um Linux und Open Source geht über die Bühne. Das freie Vortragsprogramm ist ja mittlerweile veröffentlicht und die Austeller stehen auch schon eine Weile fest. Ich selbst werde am Samstag um 10.30 Uhr im Saal Berlin I einen Vortrag haben, das Thema ist “Bring Color To The Game“. Den Votrag halte ich zusammen mit kai-Uwe Behrmann vom Oyranos Projekt. Der Vortrag versucht zu erklären was Color Management eigentlich ist, da sieht es bei vielen schon trüb aus und wie der derzeitige Stand innerhalb der Open Source Welt ist. Da gibt es ja so einiges an Software von ArgyllCMS, über LittleCMS, dispcalGUI, colord, Oyranos, KolorManager, Gnome-Color-Manager usw. Allein diese Woche hatte ich 3 Personen, die Gnome-Color-Manager für ein Color Management System hielten, wo es doch nur ein grafisches Frontend zur Konfiguration eines solchen ist. Es sind eine Menge Mythen und Unklarheiten zu diesem Thema unterwegs und wir hoffen, mit unserem Vortrag diese bereinigen zu können und dem Anwender zu zeigen wie er zu einem farbverwalteten Desktop kommt.

Vor etwa einem Monat habe ich einen kleinen Screencast über ein cooles Werkzeug namens Tupi gemacht und hier in meinem Blog veröffentlicht.  Problematisch war und ist an Tupi funktionierende Pakete für seine Distribution zu finden. Bei Fedora und openSUSE scheiterte das paketieren mit deren Systemen an einem ganz einfachem Grund, Tupi hat ffmpeg als Abhängigkeit. FFmpeg ist aber nun mal mit seinen Codecs eher etwas problematisch mit den Rechten.

Gustav Gonzalez hat in den letzten Wochen einige Anstrengungen unternommen, hier eine Lösung zu schaffen. Die Lösung ist, dass Tupi nun aus mehreren Teilen besteht, einmal der Software Tupi selbst und als Plugin Tupi-FFmpeg. Ohne das letztere Paket bedeutet das, dass man normal mit Tupi arbeiten kann aber eben keine AVI oder ähnliches erstellen kann. Für diesen “Meilenstein” hab ich für Fedora ja schon einen Packager gefunden und auch bei openSUSE wird das in Zukunft jemand paketieren. Für Ubuntu existiert nun eine Projektseite in Launchpad, so dass die Pakete nicht mehr nur auf Gustavs persönlichem Account zu finden sind. Auch hier wären helfende Hände nicht unwillkommen!

Aber das ist nicht alles, denn ohne das FFmpeg Plugin kann man ja nur JPG oder PNG exportieren, nicht wirklich eine Animation. Aber auch zu diesem Thema ist bereits Abhilfe geschaffen, in den letzten Wochen hat Gustav ebenso an einem Plugin gearbeitet umd Ogg Video zu exportieren. Auch dieses Plugin ist nun fertig, man wird also in Zukunft auf Videos exportieren können ohne auf proprietäre Formate zurückgreifen zu müssen. Für die Zukunft stehen noch einige Verbesserungen an den Tweenings und auch der Support von Webm als Videoofrmat an, dann wird Tupi seine nächste Version erreichen.

It might be a “waste of time and money” for Richard Hughes but is isnt for others. The argument nobody would run “Fedora Verne” is a really funny one to me. Nobody runs “openSUSE Teal” or “openSUSE Asparagus” in fact not many people inside openSUSE knows the codename for the version. But because 11.4 was named Asparagus its got a design in that color. So as you can see what for others is just a wasting of time ist for other people a help for doing there work. The design and the marketing team can better work with an name as with a simple number.

So if you go to the poll and vote, please do it not with the actual situation with that ugly submissions for the name in mind, please consider more what does it mean for the work of others to have release names. Its just a wasting of time to write such nonsense blogposts and when release names are wasting of time for Richard, so consider not to vote. For others its that participation in an open process, or can I choose the name in openSUSE or ubuntu?

Nein es geht gerade nicht um die demnächst erscheinende Gimp Version 2.9 oder die danach folgende Version 2.10, die diese Woche ja für Schlagzeilen gesorgt hat. Nein “Next Generation GIMP” ist das Motto unter dem ein neues Magazin rund um dieses freie Bildbearbeitungsprogramm erscheinen soll.

Für dieses Magazin sucht man jetzt nach Beiträgen. Dabei ist es egal, ob es sich um ein in GIMP nachbearbeitetes Foto, eine Grafik die mit dem Programm erstellt wurde oder Tutorials, Tipps und Tricks handelt. Von Interesse sind aber auch interessante Webseiten zum Thema GIMP oder interessante Plugins. Mehr dazu, was und wie eingereicht werden kann bei Meet the Gimp.

Es ist mal wieder Zeit für einen Inkscape-Screencast. Dieses Mal versuche ich zu erklären, was Filter sind und wie sie funktionieren und wir definieren gemeinsam einen Filter, der Flammen erzeugt. Die angegebene Datei mit dem Filter ist hier zum Download zu finden.

Ich habe schon vor einer Weile einen anderen, allerdings englischsprachigen Screencast zu Filtern gemacht, in diesem wird gezeigt, wie man mit Hilfe von Pfadeffekten und Filtern ein ganzes Feuerwerk zaubert. Da in diesem Screencast nur die Schritte zum Erstellen der benötigten Formen gezeigt werden, braucht man die Datei mit den Filtern auf jeden Fall. Diese ist hier zum Download zu finden.

Also viel Spaß beim Nachmachen und Fragen finden wie immer in den Kommentaren Platz.

Es ist ja gerade mal noch 2 Wochen hin, bis die Linuxwochen in Wien beginnen. Auch dieses Jahr werde ich auf dieser Veranstaltung präsent sein. Dieses Jahr allerdings mit weniger Beiträgen als in den Vorjahren. Grund dafür ist das gleichzeitig statt findende LibreGraphicsMeeting, auf dem ich auch mit Vorträgen beteiligt bin und so habe ich dieses Jahr im Programm der Linuxwochen nur zwei Workshops über Inkscape.

Wie versprochen gibt es neue Inhalte, dass scheint auch nötig zeigen sich doch einige Personen immer wieder in meinen Workshops. Ich hoffe, das ist weil denen die Teilnahme Spaß bereitet und nicht das sie öfter kommen müssen, weil sie Inkscape bei mir nicht begreifen .

Einen Workshop wird es Freitag vormittags geben, den nenne ich “Sexy Jeans” und in diesem Workshop geht es darum, was man alles mit Hilfe von Filtern und den LPE (Live Path Effects) erreichen kann. Der zweite Workshop ist dann am Samstag vormittag und den habe ich “Grinsen, kann jeder genannt” es geht darum ein eigenes Emoticon-Set zu kreieren. Neben einigen Grundlagen der Arbeit mit Inkscape kommt hier der Batchexport zum Einsatz.

Für alle denen das dann noch nicht an Zeit reicht, die sie mit mir an diesem Tag verbracht haben, nach dem Mittag habe ich einen Workshop im Programm des LibreGraphicsMeeting, in dem es um die Handhabung von Scribus geht. In diesem Workshop sollen die Paper des LibreGraphicsMeeting zu einem Buch verarbeitet werden. Also wer noch ein wenig Scribus erlernen möchte, sollte da richtig sein.

Mit “Tube” wird es einen neuen Open Movie geben allerdings nur, wenn die entsprechend benötigte Summe zusammen kommt. Das sind alles in allem  22.000US$.  Um das benötigte Geld zusammen zu bekommen, gibt es eine Spendenkampagne. Natürlich wie auch bei ähnlichen Projekten, erhält man im Gegenzug etwas zurück, wie den Namen im Abspann und auch hier gehören die Sourcen für den Film als auch dabei entwickelte Skripte später der Allgemeinheit. Der Film wird unter CC BY-SA 3.0 und die Skripte unter GPL. Das bei der Erstellung des Films natürlich freie Software zum Einsatz kommt steht wohl ausserhalb jeder Frage.

Hinter dem Projekt steckt Bassam Kurdali, der entscheidend am ersten Film der Blender Foundation “Elephants Dream” mitgewirkt hat. Das Projekt trägt den Namen “Tube” und die Geschichte des Films basiert auf den Gilgamesh Epos, welches in die Zukunft versetzt wurde.

I was informed yesterday, that my talk for LinuxTag is accepted. The talk will be delivered together with Kai-Uwe Behrmann from Oyranos project. So some might think because of the Game in the name compared to KDEs slogan “Join the Game” and that Oyranos is more a solution on the KDE desktop, the talk will be about color management on KDE desktop. But it isnt.

We will talk about color management on the Linux desktop in generell. There are lot of people outside they still think it has something to do with CMYK and printing, what isnt true. So the talk will explain what it is, and was has to be done to use it on the desktop. What for solutions and that includes colord, are out there. Which applications are useful and a lot of things more.

Arround 3 weeks ago I wrote a german post about Tupi, a really cool 2D animation program and made a little screencast how easy it is to doing animations with it. The screencast is in german, but you should see that I need only 4 steps to create the animation.

It might be easy using it, but it is hard to become running it on a fedora system. There are only rpm available for older versions and not for 64-bit.  Compile it from the sources is also not really a funny thing. The main problem getting it into Fedora was the using of ffmpeg as a dependency. Jaroslav Reznik spent some time explaining it to Gustav Gonzalez Giron, how it should be done to become packaged for Fedora.

So now, Gustav learned the lessons and divided the code of Tupi, removed all dependencies of ffmpeg from the GUI and tools and made ffmpeg and the video export as an plugin. So there are now 2 different parts Tupi and Tupi-ffmpeg. He would need some helping hands try to package that and look, it works everything well.

Without Tupi-ffmpeg Tupi will only export PNG or JPG, what is not really helpful on animations. So Gustav also begun to work implementing video formats that are free, like ogv.

The program schedule for LibreGraphicsMeeting in Vienna is now published. If you are intereste, you can find the comlete schedule here. On 2nd May the first day of LibreGraphicsMeeting the main topics are Color Management and reverse engineering of some file formats. On that day, I will give my first talk “Taxi DB – Call A Cab To Bring The Colors” about the internet color profile database – Taxi. It’s mostly the same talk as I gave on FOSDEM in february. This day will be really interesting.
On the second day Mizmo and Emichan will have there first talk – “An awesome FLOSS design collaboration workflow” I am very sure the talk who follows that talk – “The importance of new tools to enable collective design process” fits exactly to it.
On friday, I am really interested in the talk of Johan Engelen about -”Powerstroke: variable stroke width in Inkscape” hopefully I can visit it, but I fear not because I submitted also 2 workshops to Linuxwochen and after my experience they will scheduled on friday and saturday. And on friday it has to be scheduled in the morning because on 3pm I have together with Mizmo and Allan Day another talk – “Doing Design In The World Of FLOSS”. Nicu Buculei will also have at that day an talk – “Free Culture meets Free Software: Wiki Loves Monuments”
Saturday if mostly animation programs like SynfigStudio and Tupi topic. But talks like “Remake – build system for animation projects” are also interesting. But I will have no time visiting them, first as I said I will have an workshop on Linuxwochen and at 1pm I will have an workshop – “Open Source, Just Works – The LGM Book Workshop” where I try with visitors of LGM and Linuxwochen to produce a book with the papers of the talks from LibreGraphicsMeeting. The idea behind that workshop is simple, Linuxwochen always asked me for an workshop about Scribus. The problem with this is for me simple, you can sit down with the participants and doing something with Scribus and hopefully they see how it works. I have another opinion on that, I always doing my workshops in the way to give the participants a target, which is useful. So later the participants can be proud of what they have done and see that they can doing things with free tools, its the most what you can reach in a 3-4 hours workshop. If I reach the target the book will be published and available at amazon and all participants will named in it. The profit flows back to LibreGraphicsMeeting and will be used for covering the travel costs for the 2013 edition of LGM.
Some might have the question where on LGM comes Tatica in, because there was a donation campaign for her travelling to LGM Vienna. First of all we reached mostly the goal of 2.500US$ and a few weeks ago we booked the flights to Vienna. We got a cheaper flight as we calculated and 3 weeks ago I booked an appartment which brings the costs for accomodation also down to arround 200€ instead of the calculated 300€. So Tatica will participate on LibreGraphicsMeeting and Linuxwochen, where she submitted 2 talks “One Of The World’s Largest FLOSS Events – FLiSoL” and “Venezuela – An Entire Country Migrates To Linux” especially in the 2nd one are the organizers interested, because Vienna had like Munich his own Linux distribution once but the migration failed. So she will have definitly an talk at Linuxwochen. We will know it, when the program of Linuxwochen comes out. So Fedora will have an good and very visible participation on LibreGraphicsMeeting. Fedora of course will also participate on Linuxwochen, which is on same time and building, about that later more.

Schon seit einer Weile beschäftige ich mich mit Animation, dass ist ja eigentlich mit SVG möglich. Bis jetzt fehlte mir da aber das richtige Werkzeug, aber jetzt scheine ich fündig geworden zu sein.
Wenn man klassische 2D Animationen mit Open Source machen möchte, dann war bisher Synfig Studio die Wahl. Problem hier, die Zeichenwerkzeuge machen es mir schwer und auch die GUI ist für meinen Geschmack unübersichtlich. Das nächste Problem wäre, dass Synfig Studio im Moment keine Animation von SVG mit SMIL oder ähnlichem vorsieht, dafür gibt es zwar Planungen aber wer weiss wann das verfügbar ist.
Nun bin ich vor einer Weile auf ein kleines aber vielversprechendes Projekt gestoßen, welches sich Tupi 2D Magic nennt. Tupi sieht den Export als SMIL schon mal vor und ebenfalls als Bildfolge oder Video. Die Zeichenwerkzeuge sind zwar immer noch nicht weltbewegend, dass tut der Sache allerdings keinen Abbruch, da man SVG importieren kann. Diese Vorgehensweise kommt mir natürlich sehr entgegen. Mit Hilfe des sogenannten Tweenings lassen sich auf diese Weise schnell Animationen erzeugen.
Wie schnell und einfach geht zeige ich in dem folgendem Screencast, der zeigt wie schnell eine drehende Animation zustande kommt.

Das mit Hilfe von Inkscape und Tupi auch wundervolle Animationen rasch produzierbar sind zeigt das folgende Beispiel.

Alle Schritte, die nötig sind um dieses Video zu produzieren inklusive der Audio- und Videobearbeitung findet man im Portal von Tupi, dort findet man auch die SVG-Datei um genau dieses Video nach zu produzieren.

Einen Haken hat das Ganze allerdings zur Zeit, funktionierende Pakete sind schwer zu finden. Nutzer von Ubuntu finden Pakete hier. Nutzer von Fedora und openSUSE hingegen, müssen Tupi selbst übersetzen. Das macht allerdings keinen Spaß, das kann ich prophezeien. Das liegt daran, dass der Entwickler ffmpeg eingebaut hat, und weder Fedora noch openSUSE erlauben das in ihren Buildsystemen. Es wird aber bereits daran gearbeitet, das entsprechend zu entfernen, da man dieses ohnehin nur benötigt, wenn man AVI oder ähnliches exportieren möchte. Und wenn man das braucht, so kann man später auch ffmpeg nachinstallieren. Einige Binärpakete, für allerdings veraltete Releases kann man hier finden. Wer sich dennoch ans übersetzen wagen möchte, der findet hier Hilfe für openSUSE und hier für Fedora.
Wie man sehen kann, brauchen derartige Softwareprojekte dringend Hilfe, beim packen und entwickeln, daher ist jede Hilfe willkommen. Tupi braucht auch noch weitere Hilfe. Der Hauptentwickler dieser Software würde gern zum Libre Graphics Meeting nach Wien reisen, um sich dort mit den Entwicklern anderer freier Grafiksoftware auszutauschen und Ideen für Tupi zu finden und es weiter zu entwickeln. Unter anderem würde er denjenigen in Wien treffen können, der Tupi für Fedora packen will. Dafür fehlt Gustav allerdings das Geld für den Flug, dieser kostet allein 1000$ und er muss um ein Visa zu bekommen, Hin- und Rückflugticket vorweisen, ebenso eine Reservierung für die Übernachtung. Im Moment sammelt er dafür Geld und bis jetzt sieht es sehr trübe aus, wer also Tupi ein wenig helfen möchte, damit die Entwicklung dieses Werkzeuges weitergeht, findet hier ein Pledgie.

So die Ausgabe von 2012 der Chemnitzer Linux-Tage ist nunmehr Geschichte. Neben dem Stand von Fedora, wo man mich eher selten gesehen hat, hatte ich am Samstag Nachmittag einen Workshop zu Inkscape und am Sonntag noch einen Vortrag, wie man mit Inkscape und SVG Vortragsfolien erstellt. Meine Vortragsfolien zu diesem Thema kann man hier finden, da diese die Demo natürlich nicht enthalten und sicher doch alle wissen wollen, wie es geht, gibt es dazu auch Screencasts. Der Screencast zum Erstellen von seitenbasierten Präsentationen, ist hier zu finden, wer mehr über das Thema Zoomeffekte bzw. ansichtsbasierte Präsentationen mit JessyInk den findet man hier und wer wissen möchte, wie die alternative Erweiterung für Inkscape Sozi funktioniert, findet hier einen entsprechenden Screencast.

Für den Workshop gibt es natürlich keine Vortragsfolien, in einem Workshop wird ja aus meiner Sicht nicht viel um den heißen Brei herum geredet sondern gearbeitet. It’s nearly a week after the Movie Night @ Developer Conference, so its time for publishing the list with the movies I played there. The slides from the begin of the session, you can find here. In this part of the session I played a cutout from Star Wars Revelations, which is not a open or free movie. I also played some examples for some points like Weltraffer, Connected, OpenMuffin and from the Morevna Projekt. It was definitly damn cold in Brussel, but warmer then at home. The FOSDEM begun with a damn hard ride to Brussel, we needed 12 hours to go there. But we had some time to meet some friends at the beer event. As Jörg said the booth wasnt really good prepared. On saturday I spent the whole day on the booth ( I dont know why because I didnt add me to the personal list in the wiki). But I had still some time to say personally THX to some people who donated to the “Tatica Travel Campaign” on pledgie, like the guys from Libre Graphics Magazin. On the evening I went together with Nicu to the Libre Graphics Dinner and we had some chats about graphic stuff and the upcoming LGM in Vienna. Btw, there is also a campaign for donations on pledgie, so if you use GIMP, Inkscape, Krita, Blender and all the other cool graphic software you can say THX with a small donation.

On sunday I spent most of the time in the OpenICC dev room, listen to the talks about color managment, I also had a talk about Taxi DB there. The cool thing was some asked in the talk about the OpenICC organization exactly for an application like this, so I had a good idea After the track the FOSDEM ended and we left for riding home another 14 hours horror trip.

As Jörg mentioned in his blogpost, fedora will have again an booth at Chemnitzer Linux-Tage. And there will be a lot of talks from Fedora people also this year. Thorsten Lemhuis will have 3 talks “Neueste Entwicklungen im Linux-Kernel” and how you can help the development of the kernel through testing new versions and also the “Kernel Kwestioning“. Christoph Wickert will speak about Methods fighting Spam. Robert Scheck will have a talk in the Newbie-Section and will explain how easy it is to build RPM packages. Jörg Simon will speak about “Fedora Security Lab and the OSSTMM” and myself will give a session about how easy it is to do with SVG and a few lines JavaScript presentations. But I also will have an part of the workshop program, doing some popsicle with Inkscape. Jörg think its the largest number of talks Fedora people there ever had, and I know that it is the biggest So maybe you can join us at this event, there are still some open places for the booth personal.

Das Programm der Chemnitzer Linux-Tage ist ja nun seit 2 Tagen bereits veröffentlicht. Zeit um auch mal auf meine Beiträge hinzuweisen. Ich werde mit zwei Beiträgen auf den CLT vertreten sein und zwar rund um SVG und Inkscape. Am Samstag Nachmittag können Interessierte wieder gemeinsam mit mir Inkscape einige seiner Geheimnisse der Benutzung entlocken. Da ich ja immer bei diesen Workshops ein Zielbild vorgebe, es gibt auch dieses Mal lecker Eiskrem. Auf Grund der Zeit die mir zur Verfügung steht und auch weil hier die Teilnehmerzahl begrenzt ist, plane ich nicht nur Orangeneis sondern auch die Schoko-Nuß-Variante zu zeichnen.

Am Sonntag habe ich dann noch einen Vortrag “Free Your Slides“, den dürften wohl so einige bereits kennen. Inkscape und SVG können eben nicht nur für schicke Grafiken eingesetzt werden. SVG, one of the most underused technologies in website development today, wie Smashingmagazin vor einigen Tagen geschrieben hat. Das man Präsentation in Handumdrehen und ganz einfach und mit schicken Effekten erzeugen kann zeigt dieser Vortrag. Na dann man sieht sich.

P.S. Mein Inkscape – Praxisbuch, sollte bis dahin erschienen sein, eine gute Gelegenheit sich das Autogramm des Autors zu holen. Ich arbeite jedenfalls mit Hochdruck an der Fertigstellung.

Im April und Mai ist es wieder soweit, Linux und Open Source tourt durch Österreich. Den Anfang machen die LinuxTage in Graz, welche bereits auf der Suche nach interessanten Beiträgen sind und am 28. April statt finden. Die Einreichungsfrist für Beiträge endet Mitte März. Am 3. Mai geht es dann weiter in Wien und zwar bis zum 5. Mai. Auch hier sind die Macher bereits auf der Suche nach Austellern und Beiträgen.

Die LinuxWochen in Wien haben für dieses Jahr folgende Schwerpunkte im Programm: Audio, Multimedia & Arts (Sound Design, Videoschnitt,…), Content Management, Webanwendungen, Webprogrammierung , Datenschutz, Verschlüsselung, Free Software (Gnu, GPG, Tor, …), Robotik und Steuerung (Arduino, Lego Mindstorm, …), GIS, GeoDaten, OpenData (Grass, OpenStreetMap, QGis, …) , IT Security, Programme für Home und Office PCs (Office, Browser, Email, …), Smartphones Hardware und Software (z.B. Android), Software Entwicklung von Anwendungen bis Embedded Devices, Grafik, Visualisierung, 3D (Gimp, Blender, Inkscape, …), Spieleentwicklung & Game Design & Level Editing, Systemadministration, Cloud & Cluster, Virtualisierung. Bis zum 1. April kann man hier Beiträge einreichen.
Besonders unter dem Punkt Grafik und 3D wird man wohl sehr viel in diesem Jahr finden, da das LibreGraphicsMeeting ebenfalls zu diesem Zeitraum unter dem Dach der LinuxWochen stattfinden wird. Hier treffen sich die Entwickler, wohl nahezu aller bekannten Open Source Programme aus dem Bereich Grafik, um sich auszutauschen. Wer selbst all die schönen Programm wie GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, Blender, DigiKam, Hugin, Krita, MyPaint, Pitivi und viele andere benutzt und ein kleines Dankeschön dafür geben will, hat hier die Chance. Das LibreGraphicsMeeting hat wie im vergangenen Jahr wieder ein Pledgie, mit dem man das LGM unterstützen kann, das Geld dient zur Unterstützung der anreisenden Entwickler bei den Reisekosten. Leider ist im vergangenem Jahr nicht genügend zusammengekommen, also unterstützt die Entwickler der Programme

Es wird sich also lohnen, an den LinuxWochen in Wien teilzunehmen. Ich selbst werde wohl ganz sicher, wie alle Jahre, wieder vor Ort sein und sicher auch mit Workshops zu Inkscape & Co. und Vorträgen vertreten sein.

Before I left openSUSE I had an little idea how to bring color managment on the Linux desktop forward. If you use colord or Oyranos on the end you will need always ICC-profiles. On ubuntu you can install the package icc-profiles and you will have the most profiles for printing jobs mostly from Adobe. For Fedora and openSUSE you have to download them from Adobe. But this is easy against finding profiles from some hardware manufacturers. Sometimes it is an adventure to finde them, I can tell you that. It should be easy to build a platform for sharing free profiles and if there is an API applications can download them from there.
Now its not really only an idea anymore.

Last summer Sebastian Oliva worked as GSoC student on it, now the main parts are done. Also dispcalGUI integrated the service in his last version. But there is still some work todo. XOrg and ICC share on FOSDEM an DevRoom and on sunday there will be a lot of color managment talks and I will present the status of Taxi DB

Wie heißt das so schön unverhofft kommt oft. Gestern habe ich noch nach einer Erweiterung gesucht, die aus Calc-Tabellen bzw. CSV-Dateien, schöne Charts in Inkscape generiert. Angeregt zu dieser Suche hat mich ein ziemlich alter Screencast. Nützlich ist das Ganze ja schon, aber Gnumeric haben die wenigsten installiert, die Masse nutzt wohl Libre bzw. OpenOffice und die Hangelei, dass erst mit Draw zu Öffnen um es dann als SVG zu speichern. Zumindest ich bin da wohl mit direktem Zeichnen schneller

Heute bin ich aber durch Zufall doch auf eine Erweiterung gestossen, die mir wenigstens anäherungsweise gefällt – NiceCharts. Nach der Installation (hochtrabend für das Kopieren nach ~/.config/inkscape/extensions/) findet man die Erweiterung unter Erweiterungen>Rendern>NiceCharts. Es öffnet sich ein kleiner Dialog, in dem man die Werte eingeben kann und wählen, ob es sich um einen Bar-, Stacked Bar- oder Pie-Chart handeln sollen. Nach der Bestätigung wird der entsprechende Chart generiert und zwar auf einer Extra-Ebene, was mir gut gefällt. Weniger gut gefällt mir, dass der Entwickler bereits anfängt, die Charts aus seiner Sicht “nice” zu gestalten, sie z.B. mit Schatten hinterlegt.

Ein kleiner Schalter ob ich das möchte, wäre hilfreich. Jedenfalls besser als sie nachher alle löschen zu müssen Leider ist an dem Code seit Mitte letzten Jahres auch nichts mehr geschehen und das obwohl so eine Erweiterung auf jeden Fall sinnvoll ist. Naja vielleicht findet sich ja jemand….
