It could be said that the West Coast composers of the later 20th century, such as John Cage, were as innovative and startlingly original as Haydn. They freed music from so many of its prior expectations, most particularly the idea of control and authorship. In this sense, music finally gained the kinds of freedom allowed to fine arts since surrealism. Their influence can hardly yet be quantified, continuing as it does, in works such as those of Richter.
