Both accused of opportunistically changing artistic outlook, and of simultaneously being too popular and too modern, they helped to create the mythology of the modern artist. Music Talks: Towards Expressionism

As Romanticisim became hyper-Romanticism in the years before the First World War, it became increasingly difficult to break from the cloying traditions of the past. German painter and printmaker Käthe Kollwitz was preoccupied with the effects of poverty and war on the working class. For the new generation, Expressionism offered a more culturally relevant aesthetic without having to subscribe to revolution. In this session we examine that niche, and also have the opportunity to consider Arnold Schoenberg’s own career as a painter.

At the end of their lives, both James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Franz Liszt set down challenges to the next generation. Foreshadowing atonality and impressionism, Karl Lutchmayer discusses how their distillation of Romanticism into subtle intimations overthrew the bombast of their contemporaries and earned them both the right to be considered the creators of Modernism.
