I haven’t used conventional shampoo in quite a long time- a few years- but I got my hands on a number of Japanese hair products and wanted to give them a try. My favorite of the bunch is Kao Asience Inner Rich Shampoo. It’s also the one I expected to like the least, since it’s formulated for thick, coarse Asian hair and contains sulfates (ALS rather than SLS). I was sure this shampoo would cause breakage while leaving my hair limp and greasy. To my surprise, not only did it leave my hair shiny and full of body, I finished the bottle and am contemplating ordering more.

My hair is baby fine, and has lots of follicles (thick) but since each individual hair is fine, it typically looks thin and flat. My scalp is oily and my ends tend to dry out quickly. SLS causes my hair to break and split, and also irritates my scalp and causes flakes. Switching to sulfate-free shampoo bars solved these issues. I approached this shampoo carefully, as ALS is also a sulfate and I was unsure how my hair and scalp would react to it.

The first thing I noticed was the fragrance. It’s a rather generic fruity floral, reminiscent of Aussie products. I don’t hate it, but it’s not a stand out for me either. The texture of the shampoo is a bit more liquidy than most American shampoos. It’s not runny by any means, but it’s not so thick. I like this texture better, since I was able to easily pour only what I needed without squeezing and having a huge glop come out. The shampoo itself is a pearlescent color, so nothing out of the ordinary there. It created lots of suds and washed away cleanly.

Asience Inner Rich contains lots of ingredients that are great for hair. The press reads:

Contains natural essences of soy and pearl protein, which revitalize hair that has lost protein

Camellia oil and ginseng extract help the hair retain moisture, and restore suppleness within the hair follicle. Camellia oil in particular has long been used in Asia to nourish the hair and skin, as it is an extremely well absorbed and natural oil extract from the camellia flower.

Eucalyptus extract protects hair and restores lost shine, while rice germ oil strengthens and moisturizes

It also contains Royal Jelly extract from bees, so vegans would want to give this a pass.

After drying, my hair does feel healthy and looks shiny. It doesn’t feel dry or brittle, and my scalp doesn’t feel overly stripped or oily, as some moisturizing shampoos leave it. My hair has body and bounce, and my bangs- the first place to start looking oily- are fantastic until my next shower. It doesn’t cause any issues with my scalp either.

I am surprised at how well this shampoo works for my non-Asian, non-coarse hair. Kao Asience makes two other lines besides Inner Rich, Shine Therapy and Nature Smooth. Nature Smooth is designed specifically to work with an oily scalp, so I might try that one before purchasing another bottle of Inner Rich. I love how this shampoo works for me and will repurchase if Nature Smooth does not work well. I purchased my bottle from Sasa.com, but it’s also easily found on EBay and Amazon. Information about the Kao Asience line in English can be found at Kao Malaysia here.

I’ve realized that, for a while now, I reference my “top ten list”, but no one had any idea of what would be on that list, because I’ve never sat down to write it out. This is another post that’s been a long time coming. I thought about many things when writing this, from customer service, to innovative products, to how well each product performs, to how often I reach for a company’s products. I have tons of products from a large number of companies, and even with a collection as large as mine, sometimes I find myself reaching for a company’s offerings time and time again. Likewise, I have plenty of beautiful pigments that I rarely pull out, even though they’re wonderful and well made.

I wouldn’t say this is a definitive list- far from it, but it’s a list of the companies I shop at most often and whose products get the most use. It’s in alphabetical order for fairness, otherwise I’d be here all night shuffling the order.

1. Detrivore Cosmetics – Beautiful blushes, sultry eyeshadows, popular primer, and all at a more than reasonable price. Keep an eye on Detrivore’s sales. Occasionally Distorria runs 10 for $20 eyeshadow and 3 for $10 face product sales. Pssst- the next one is coming up November 1st! If you’ve never tried the products, this would be a great time to jump in.

<del>2. Evil Shades – Andrea’s shadows, blushes, and lippies amaze me. The color shifts are breathtaking, and the formula is perfect. The Spectrum Pots are my holy grail indie eye primer. I have two orders still waiting to swatch for you (I am SO behind!) but they’re so pretty they keep sneaking out of the swatch pile and on to my face.</del>

3. Fyrinnae – The shadows are stunningly complex, and I love Pixie Epoxy so much. It changed the way I wear my eyeshadow.

<del>4. Geek Chic Cosmetics – GCC fulfils my need for sparkly makeup and geekery all in one fell swoop. It made me love a matte brown eyeshadow. Yes, it’s really that miraculous.</del>

5. Haus of Gloi – Gloi’s sugar scrubs are a daily use item in my home, and trying to narrow down my shopping list is always a challenge. I’ve never ordered a scent I dislike from Gloi, although the seasonal collections are always my favorite.

6. Linnaeus Cosmetics – I browsed, I sampled, I flipped. I want every single shadow Marin makes, and not just because I fangirl her hard. Each collection is very thoughtfully planned around wildlife and carefully named to represent a characteristic of the chosen animal. How cool is that?

7. Morgana Cryptoria – Melissa gets lots of love for her lipsticks, and recently her balms and glosses, and they are worth every bit of praise they receive. However, her shadows are just as awesome as her more well-known products. Everyone needs to try a Morgana shadow.

8. One Hand Washes The Other – Black Magic is the holy grail soap for my face. It cleared up my horrible skin. Since then, I’ve tried to use other acne products, and the breakouts have always come back. Black Magic is it for me. Becca makes fantastic limited edition scents, and hello, loofah soap! I’ve also recently (as in the last week) become addicted to Flower Balm.

9. Persephone Minerals – I shopped for the Sailor Moon shades and stayed for the incredible duochromes. Victoria has a great eye for color, and I have to resist reaching for the Sailor Jupiter set almost every day. It is perfection. I’ve never been disappointed with a single color I’ve tried.

10. Shiro Cosmetics – Caitlin makes one of my favorite eyeshadow formulas, and I get a geeky thrill out of knowing that my makeup is named after Pokemon or Zelda. The meme-themed intertubes are both fun and pretty.

Honorable mention goes to Silk Naturals and Meow Cosmetics, as each of these companies have dedicated drawers in my stash, and I love their products very much and highly recommend them. If I were doing a top ten makeup companies list, they would definitely make the cut.

What are your top ten companies?

Korean brand Baviphat stole my heart and bathroom counter space with their adorable line of fruit gels. Incredibly affordable at about $13 each (which includes shipping to the U.S.), each gel has a different purpose. The ones I’ll be covering today are: Apple AC Therapy Sleeping Pack, Peach All-in-One Waterfull Cream, and Paprika Pore Solution Sleeping Pack.

Each of these are housed in an absolutely precious fruit/vegetable-shaped jar. The jars are incredibly sturdy, and can be washed out and reused. My daughter has already laid claim to these three. Each jar is quite large, being roughly the same size as the produce it represents. There is a small lid inside each, with holds a plastic spoon. I scoop out the gel with the spoon, and then wash and dry the spoon before putting it back. It keeps the gel from being contaminated with fingers. Each gel has a difference scent, and although it’s a strong scent, it does fade, albeit slowly. However, the scent is a selling point for me because I think they smell delicious!

The Apple AC Therapy Sleeping Pack is scented like apples. A Sleeping Pack is a mask that one wears overnight, and is meant to be washed or rinsed off the next morning. The gel goes on clear so it can be worn without staining pillowcases. The Apple AC Therapy Sleeping Pack is recommend for “trouble skin” and also gently exfoliates, so skin looks bright and soft the next day. I had no problems with breaking out, in fact, my skin seems clearer when I use it, and while most chemical exfoliators bother my sensitive skin, this one works brilliantly. The Apple Sleeping Pack made a noticeable difference in my skin’s texture and appearance. I would easily pay double for it.

The Paprika Pore Solution Sleeping Pack is scented like fruit punch, and is similar to the Apple Sleeping Pack in appearance. It is for pore tightening, sebum control, and allowing the skin to retain elasticity. While pores can’t be opened or closed, my pores do appear smaller when using the Paprika Sleeping Pack because the sebum control is exceptional. I can wear foundation all day long with no breakthrough oil if I use the Paprika Sleeping Pack the night before. Again, I’ve had no breakouts using this product, and the superior oil control makes this one my favorite for everyday use. I use the Apple Sleeping Pack about every three days, and the Paprika Sleeping Pack the rest of the week.

The Peach All-in-One Waterfull Cream smells amazing, like peach yogurt. Although it has “cream” in the name, this is also a gel. It’s meant to be used in the place of moisturizer. It’s not a heavy moisturizer, so I would not recommend this for anyone dealing with dry skin. Also, being a gel moisturizer, it feels a bit sticky on the skin until fully absorbed. I’ll only use this gel if I have plenty of time to get ready, because sometimes it can take 10-15 minutes for the tackiness to go away. Of the three, this is my least favorite, and although it works well as a lightweight moisturizer, I have others that do the job better, and I don’t plan to repurchase this one. The Paprika Pore Solution Sleeping Pack and Apple AC Therapy Sleeping Pack will be repurchased as needed, and I plan to branch out to other Baviphat skin care products.

I purchased these from Bellogirl on eBay.

The beauty blogging community has more drama than any other online group I’ve belonged to. Some people will say it’s because it’s a primarily female hobby, but I reject the notion that one’s gender determines their actions. I suspect that it has more to do with trying to find one’s worth. Bullies, at their core, are weak, cowardly things, and many turn to makeup to bolster their self-confidence. Add in the power trip that comes from gaining a following (see: Glittersniffer), and it’s a recipe for disaster. Oftentimes, many people who ordinarily stay drama-free get caught up in the tide- maybe they want to be a good friend to someone they feel is being wronged, maybe they feel they need to speak up a perceived injustice, maybe they’re just curious about it all. However, getting involved in the drama just perpetuates MORE drama, so I present to you:

Amanda’s All-Purpose Guide to Avoiding Drama

Lesson One: There Are Assholes On The Internet

I’m not even going to get into the why’s and how’s of this. Just accept it. 50% of the people you meet on the internet will be assholes. They may be assholes in real life. They may be people blowing off steam from a bad day. They may be trolling. Who knows? The end result is the same. If you are here, also on the internet, then you have pretty much agreed to the unwritten rule that you’re going to have to deal with assholes. Put on your big-girl (or boy) panties and move on.

1. The best way to deal with assholes is to ignore them. See an asshole in your Twitter feed? Block them and move on.

a. Firing back makes you look like a douche, too. You CAN NOT win an internet argument with an asshole. You maybe present the most logical, well-written argument in the history of mankind, and all it will merit is a derogatory comment about your mom’s tits. Just move on. It’s not worth it. Even if you’re right, it will make you look bad if you are pulled into drama. Stay classy, keep your head up, don’t fed the trolls, and it will pass. I know it’s hard, but it’s impossible to defend yourself against someone who will sink as low as assholes do. They will take every well-meaning word you write and twist it around for their benefit. If you must say something, keep it above-board. Don’t call names, don’t NAME names, just stick to the facts, and don’t expect it to change anyone’s mind.

2. Some people exist solely to create drama. If you attended any sort of high school, you know this to be true. No, they never do grow up. The funny thing about these people is that most people don’t see it. They’re the wizards behind the curtains, who sneak in, get everyone riled up, and then sit back and watch as their whole social sphere is firing nasty comments at whomever the wizard has decreed needs it. The best way to deal with these people is to stop and THINK. Are you attacking someone because your friend said they need it? Maybe you need to question why your friend wants you to do her/his dirty work. If the answer is that your friend is too passive aggressive to do it her/himself, then maybe it’s time to distance yourself from said person. Be aware of the drama mongers and don’t buy into their bullshit. Again, it just makes YOU look bad while they sit back and have a laugh at your expense.

Lesson Two: Communication Is Hard, Ya’ll.

3. If someone has written something to which you take offense, take a moment, again, and THINK. (I can’t emphasize this enough. Thinking is GOOD.) Did this person really say what you think they said? Tone is not conveyed very well through the written word, and what is crystal clear to one person is as murky as mud to another. If you feel at all uncertain about their meaning, ASK FOR CLARIFICATION. And not like this:

“I’m sorry, but were you really intending to be a giant bitch when you wrote “X”?”

A simple, “Did you mean “X” when you say that? That’s how I’m reading it, and I don’t want to misunderstand,” will serve nicely.

However, if the message was not intended for you, I beg you to please LET IT GO. If someone insults your friend, send that friend a message privately. Comment back publicly with something nice to say about your friend. Jumping to someone’s defense will make you look like an asshole if it comes to pass that you misunderstood the original tone or intent to the message. If you feel you simply can not sit back without speaking your mind, please do so politely. One person’s fuckery is less visible if you add your own on top.

4. Sometimes, people will take your words out of context, or will say you meant something when you did not. Again, stay classy. This accomplishes two things:

a. You can restate your original message politely. Non-assholes will appreciate that you aren’t rising to the bait.

b. If only the wizards and their minions are pointing their fingers, they will look like the assholes, not you.

Lesson Three: Not Everyone Will Like You (and vice versa)

5. Sometimes, someone will point their fingers at you for what you feel to be a non-issue. Sometimes, you may just dislike a person, for whatever reason. The proper (grown up) response is to ignore them. Pretend they don’t exist. Block them if you have to. Don’t passive aggressively tweet at them or about them. Don’t flounce and unfriend. Just do it quietly, and rejoice in the fact that online is the only place where you can make someone cease to exist in your sphere. Too bad we can’t do that with bad bosses, co-workers, or annoying in-laws.

You know what? Nevermind the lessons. All this comes down to common sense.

Don’t be an asshole.

Don’t jump on someone else for no reason.

Even if you think you have reason, wait. Think it over.

If somehow you do find find yourself embroiled in drama, stay classy, apologize if necessary, and bow out gracefully.

Vitriol gets you nowhere.

Be polite.

Be polite.

Be polite.

Repeat 6-8 ad nauseam.

If you’re old enough to be on the internet, you should know these rules by now, but a quick glance around the blogosphere will show that many don’t. It’s all about common sense and good manners. Hiding behind a keyboard doesn’t excuse anyone from manners.

I do my best to stay out of drama, because it lessens my enjoyment of the beauty blogging community. I’ve seen people that I once respected acting like petulant children. I no longer buy from some companies because of it. I’ve dropped people from Twitter and my blog roll over it. I have come very close, several times, to deleting my blog over it. No matter how much I love makeup, I dislike drama and rudeness even more.

These things should have no part in our community. We’re all here because we have a common passion, a shared love. I am constantly amazed and disgusted by the bickering, finger-pointing, and in-fighting I see. That anger can be used in much more constructive ways. This is my plea to the blogging community, please, PLEASE, let’s leave the drama behind and focus on the things that really matter.

I just haven’t found a good way to swatch these little multi-taskers from Sobe Botanicals, but the Cheek & Lip Colors are phenomenal. I use them solely as lip colors, since I’m not big on non-powdered cheek colors, but I tried to blend them out a little on one side so you could see how they sheer out. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the greatest way to showcase them. The formula varies depending on color- some are creamier and other are more firm, so they didn’t sheer uniformly. This wouldn’t be a problem on a larger area like the cheek, but on the limited space of my arm, it didn’t work so well. Lesson learned. My original review can be found here.

tl;dr: It’s not the product, it’s my shitty swatching.

Detrivore Cosmetics has been around for a long time. I first heard about them in 2009, but the lack of reviews always put me off ordering. I naively thought if no one was talking about them, they couldn’t possibly be good. In short, I’m an idiot. Detrivore is amazeballs, and I don’t understand why more people aren’t singing their praises. I’m on a mission to change that. This company deserves your patronage. YOUR FACE DESERVES SOME SWEET, SWEET DETRIVORE LOVE.

I’m not one to tell people to run out and buy something. I prefer to give you a list of why I love a product, and allow you to decide if you might love it too. But if you’re at all like me, who wants to read reviews on companies before dropping my hard earned cash, I hope I can convince you that these products are spectacular, and worth checking out. I’ll even flail a little if you need me to.

Detrivore Cosmetics bills itself as a gothic makeup company. The webpage fits the concept; it is simple, straightforward, no nonsense. I appreciate this. I know exactly where I need to go to order what I want. The product photos show a picture of a full container, minus a sifter. There are no eyeshadow swatch photos. That might put some people off, and it did me, until I finally ordered and realized they don’t need swatch photos because what you see is what you get. The color is what it is, both in the jar and in a swatch, and that is so incredibly refreshing. It’s a huge disappointment for me to purchase colors that look completely different in the jar than they do on my face. Detrivore’s listings tell me what the color is (example, for Mildew: a pretty teal color) and shows me what it looks like. See my swatch for Mildew. You will always know what you’re going to get. One of the things you may notice in my swatches is the lack of glittery colors. These are all from Detrivore’s Original collection. They all have a pretty sheen, and they blend incredibly well. I am literally counting the days until I can try some of the Satins and Highlights. I love the shadows so much that they immediately took a spot in my top 10.

As much as I love these eyeshadows, they are not my favorite product from the company. That distinction goes to the blushes. I adore every single Detrivore blush I own. I have 3 full sizes, and two samples, and I am announcing here for all the world to read: I need them ALL. I am incredibly surprised by how much I love these, as I have previously stated many times my disdain for matte blushes. I still stand by that statement with any other company, but Detrivore’s matte blushes have this otherworldly quality that makes them appear to become part of the skin itself, rather than a chalky swipe of color that rests on top and looks awful. These blushes are the best. I know if you’re looking at the page in another tab, and seeing the brightness of the blushes- especially if you’re remembering my statement about how the eyeshadows look exactly the same on as they do in the jar- you’re probably wondering what I am smoking. These blushes, while pigmented, are beautiful.

This is me, wearing nothing but BB cream, lip balm, and Detrivore Cosmetics blush in Gallows, applied with a duo-fiber brush. I have the flu, and the blush still manages to make me look like I’m not a zombie. Love love LOVE.

Detrivore also makes face powders, which I haven’t yet tried but hear good things about, and three different colored primers. Many, many people have had great luck with their primers. It’s an amazing formula, and has become my favorite swatching primer. However, as with almost every other indie primer in existence, my eyelids ate it.

Detrivore products arrive in a shrink band with a sifter. There is no sifter sticker (thank you!!!!) and an ingredients label is on the side. There is a slight turn around time that is always clearly posted on the front of the site.

Now, the last thing to which I’d like to draw your attention: look at the prices. A full size shadow is $4. A full size blush is $5, as is the primer. Powder is $5 for a 10 gram jar, or $10 for a 30 gram jar. WHUT. I am still reeling that products this good are available for such a low price.

Would I buy from Detrivore again? A thousand times yes. I give them an 11 out of 10. Why isn’t this company famous yet?
