Marrying Mr. Scrooge, Book Six DataMatch Series

Maddie Timms thought she’d been matched to the man of her dreams, but now she must double-check some data–and some chemistry–to make sure she’s set for for a happy-ever-after with her sexy CEO and not about to get Scrooged.

DREAMS—PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
Regarding love, Maddie Timms thought the results were in. Her sexual chemistry with her CEO boss, the tall, dark and handsome Nathaniel Scorge, is beyond delicious, even if he’s your typical mean, bellowing, driven, goal-oriented CEO, a workaholic, high-tech visionary. Yet the DataMatch computers predict a stronger connection to his frenemy: the handsome blond Brit, Lewis Tate. Light and dark, serious and easygoing, the two men couldn’t be more different. So the next month of dates must determine which is the true man of her dreams…
or she’ll get Scrooged.

DataMatch Box Set

Joining up with the high-tech giant SCE, Inc., for its new DataMatch venture, college graduate Maddie Timms is about to get more than the job of a lifetime; in six stories she and her coworkers are going to find love…semi-scientifically.

BEYOND PERFECT

They say that when you graduate from high school, the world is your oyster. When you graduate from college, you’re just expected to make a lot of clams. Madeline Timms and her soon-to-be friends are in search of the latter…and find something better.

DataMatch is tech giant SCE Inc.’s scientific approach to finding flawless life-long relationships, now with even more scientific precision! Except, exciting high-tech workplace and brilliant startup idea or not, it’s never that easy, is it? Computer science? Biology? Chemistry? They’re just numbers. From dating your new boss—a typical CEO; mean, bellowing, goal-oriented, melty, too-hot-to-handle, most sexually charged man you know—to seducing your geek god coworker crush right out of his test tubes, to being on the right side of the negotiating table—which is to say on top of it—some things don’t work on paper. They don’t need to.

Five relationships. Six stories. Happiness all around, guaranteed. Semi-scientifically.

But she’s falling hard for her sexy attorney Brad Richards, and it’s not just their professional connection that has her tied in knots.

When Taylor’s new idea takes off, she relies on Brad to help. Using company funds to back the innovative project, they begin a tumultuous affair and a multi-million dollar negotiation that could dominate the market or put the company in jeopardy.

As the corporate dealings escalate, their volatile relationship leaves their priorities more tangled than their bed sheets, and a fatal accounting error divides them. Brad pushes Taylor to embrace her idea, and him, by selling TME—a decision that, for her, goes deeper than money. When she refuses, it seems easier for both to walk away, and only a perspective from the grave can help her realize her future comes down to one choice: the love she’ll lose or the love she’ll make.

Chapter 1

Myles Brandt, President of the NCAA, tapped the pen on his chin. He was an older man in his fifties, like my dad, not as tall or handsome as my father, but with more of a paunch. His dark but graying hair parted to the side of a high forehead and thick brows.

I stared past him out the windows of the large conference room which sat down the hall from my own office. My first big business deal, and I didn’t want to blow it.

Brad Richards, my hotshot attorney, shifted his eyes over to me. I knew women everywhere would swoon to see that sight up close and personal. In contrast to the other gentleman in this crowd, Brad was intensely handsome. Older than Gavin, he was too old for me. Still, as a woman, I could objectively appreciate what all the fuss was about. His blondish brownish hair gleamed under the fluorescents and even though he was freshly shaven, he still had a way of seeming a bit disreputable—in a good way. I arched my eyebrows and widened my eyes at him. He shook his head infinitesimally, which I knew meant keep quiet.

I clamped my lips shut. Brad knew me too well. I always wanted to talk, open up and share my feelings. I was a pretty straightforward person, and in my personal relationships that had always worked for me. Unfortunately, that kind of honesty didn’t translate well into the business world. As controlling partner in my late husband’s billion-dollar computer gaming business, I had to learn new communication skills.

On more than one occasion, my bossy attorney had scolded me, saying, “You don’t lay all your cards out on the table, Taylor. Negotiation is about give and take. What you’re willing to give and what they’ll let you take. I guarantee whatever price you come out with, you end up getting half as much.”

To illustrate his point, he’d even taken me on a field trip to Chinatown in San Francisco a few weeks ago. We’d spent the day shopping for random stuff, and he’d spent the day teaching me the finer points of negotiation.

We’d walked into the first store and he’d said, “Pick out anything you want. Buy it like you normally would.”

So I’d found this beautiful ginger jar for Mom. I lifted it up and asked the woman behind the counter, “How much for this?”

The shop lady looked me up and down and smiled. “Oh. I make good deal for you. Only hundred seventy-five dollar.”

Brad snorted. I scowled at him. Her price was too high, I knew. I’d been bargain shopping like this before in Matamoras, Mexico, across the Texas border at Brownsville when I was fourteen. “How about seventy-five?”

“Oh.” She shook her head. “I no know.” She walked from behind the counter and took the jar from me. “Dis very special. Hand paint.”

I knew it was hand painted on very nice porcelain with a polished mahogany base.

She offered it back to me. “For you, I go hundred twenty.”

I really didn’t want to pay over a hundred for it, but it was beautifully made. I looked over at Brad, who gave no indication of what he was thinking. He was watching with his typical intensity, though.

I flashed the lady my best dimples. “If you’ll take a hundred you’ve got a deal.”

“I no know.” She looked at the item like it was a family heirloom. “Cash?”

I nodded.

Then she sighed. “Okay. It slow day. I take hundred cash.”

I puffed out my chest feeling pretty pleased and took my jar to the register. The sales lady wrapped it in tissue and placed it in a nice box. She slipped it into the bag and handed it to me. “You have good day.”

It might not have been a million-dollar deal, but I felt pretty good about the purchase. And Mom would like the ginger jar. We walked out of the store, the little bell tinkling as the door closed behind us.

Brad strolled down the sidewalk without saying a word. The smell of curry and fresh fish wafted in the air.

“So?” I grinned and arched my eyebrows at him. “How’d I do?”

He smirked. “Let’s go in here first.”

I followed him in the next store. He walked right over to the ginger jars and picked up an identical jar to the one I’d just bought. He turned to the sales guy. “How much for this?”

The guy looked Brad up and down. He pursed his lips and paused. “Thirty-five.”

“Thanks.” He set the jar down and started to walk out.

The sales clerk followed him. “Okay. For you, I make special deal. Today only. Twenty-five.”

Brad smiled at the guy. “No, thanks.”

The man hustled to the door, placing himself between us and the exit. “For you beautiful lady, I give it you eighteen dolla.” His little expectant face was too much. It made me want to buy it from him, and I already had one. My palm met my cheek in a frustrated slap.

Brad asked, “Eighteen dollars?”

“Yes. I give it you, eighteen dolla.”

Brad shook his head. “Not today. Thanks.” He left, and I followed him.

Outside the tinkling door, he turned and raised his eyebrows. “Now you tell me. How do you think you did?”

“Jackass,” I whispered as I brushed by him.

Laughing so loud it stopped passersby on the street, he came up behind me. “The first lesson you need to learn, is never buy anything in the first store on the street. They make their living on people like you. The second lesson is never make an offer on something you don’t know the value of, regardless of how much you want it.”

“Fine.” I crossed my arms over my chest and tried not to pout. “Then why don’t you show me how to do it the right way, Professor Higgins.”

“Now we’re making progress.” Still chuckling under his breath, the insufferable hound led me to the next store. “Watch and learn.”

He stepped into the store and pulled me toward the back, where rows of beautiful silk dresses lined the wall. A sales clerk came over. “Can I help you?”

“I’m looking for a gift for the lady.” Brad pointed to me.

Just like the first two sales clerks, the man looked me up and down “Very beautiful. I have special for you.”

I rolled my eyes. They all had specials today.

He steered us to a far corner and pulled out a gorgeous kimono in a misty gray-blue, almost silver satin. The fine silk was embroidered with this bright, ornate mythical creature that had the head and neck of a very feminine dragon, but the body of a peacock. I fell in love with the robe the minute I saw it.

“Here. You try on.” The man slipped the garment from the hanger and held it out for me to put my arms in. I handed my purse to Brad and shrugged into the robe in front of a full-length mirror. The soft fabric slid with ease over my clothes. I flipped my hair free from under the collar and tied the belt at my waist. Glancing up at Brad in the mirror, I caught him with a strange dark look on his face, almost like he was angry. But as soon as our eyes met, the look vanished, leaving me feeling a little unsettled. “What do you think?” I asked.

His tone was even and nonchalant. “Looks good. What do you think?”

I ran my arms over one another, luxuriating in the rich fabric. “I love it.”

The sales guy said, “Robe look good on you. Match you eyes.”

He was right. The gray exactly matched my eyes. Brad stared at my reflection for a minute then turned to the guy. “How much?”

“Oh. I give special deal just for you. Three hundred fifty.”

Brad laughed. “Take it off, Taylor.”

I really didn’t want to take it off, but I loosened the bow.

“Wait. Wait. I give you special deal because pretty lady. Only hundred seventy.”

Brad looked at the robe and scratched his jaw. He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

The sales guy asked, “How much you pay?”

“Thirty dollars,” he tossed out.

“Thirty dollar! Dis imported silk. Stich by hand.” He lifted the long bell sleeve. “I go hundred dollar. That best offer.”

“We’ll think about it.” Brad stepped behind me and slipped the robe off, his hands brushing my shoulders. Something tingled over my skin and a sensual vision flashed in my brain, but I blinked it back before it could fully form.

The man held up his hands. “No. No. Wait. I do eighty-five dollars. For you and pretty lady.

Brad spun me around to face him. My purse strap was draped over his shoulder, and I almost giggled.

He shot me a quick wink. “What do you think, Taylor? Do you want this one more than the dress down the street?”

My heart pounded in my chest with the game. I schooled my face. “I don’t know. I love this, but I really liked that dress too.”

Brad nodded in approval as he handed me back my purse. He strolled to the front of the store, picking up and putting down other items as he went.

The salesman followed him. “Okay. Seventy-five dolla for you today. Dat best offer.”

Brad didn’t answer the question, but he lifted up another twin to my blasted ginger jar. “How much for this?”

“You give seventy-five for robe, I give beautiful lady ginger jar free.”

A sexy grin spread over his face. “You’ve got a deal.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. The man was smooth. I followed them to the counter and pulled out my wallet. Brad laid his hand over mine. “This is my deal. I’ve got it.”

“But—”

He’d already turned away and handed the guy cash.

“So what do you think, Taylor?”

“Huh?” The present day voice drew me out of the memory. I blinked and tried to focus on the three gentlemen staring at me from around the conference table. “Uhh….”

Brad had a smirk on his face as if he knew what memory I’d just been reliving. And as he’d done on more than one occasion, he bailed me out. “We’ll have to discuss how much control over the product you have. I’m not sure it makes sense for us to have you dictate the nature of the plays.”

That was enough information to clue me in. “The software is progressive. The more information you feed it, the smarter and more accurate it gets. It doesn’t make sense for us to hand over that control. In fact, as the program progresses, I anticipate hiring an outside firm to audit the function.”

Brad smiled and nodded. I knew I’d nailed the answer. He’d warned me that they would want control, and that we were not to budge on that item. It was too much of a sticky wicket and could undermine the integrity of the program. “Although I am expecting input on the facility you gentlemen agree to build for it.”

The men burst into laughter. They knew I wasn’t kidding, and I think they liked my boldness. Unfortunately any new facility, at least the kind that we wanted, would take years and hundreds of millions of dollars to build.

Myles said, “Ahh, Taylor, you could build that facility with your pocket change.”

I smiled. “Maybe, but I never let an opportunity pass for a man to buy me something.”

Then they really laughed. Brad rolled his eyes, playing along. “Most women ask for a diamond ring. Not Taylor, she wants a state-of-the-art three hundred million-dollar stadium. That is the definition of high maintenance, boys.”

The room erupted in a roar.

“Why don’t we meet up tonight for dinner?” Brad pushed from the table.

The conference room door flew open.

Sara, my best friend and executive assistant, stood there, her arms trembling and her face pale. “Taylor, Brad, Thomas, we have an emergency.”

If the look on her face hadn’t told me something was up or the fact that she’d interrupted an uninterruptable meeting didn’t send off alarms, the sound of approaching sirens, which echoed like a death knell, would’ve. Something horrible had happened.

If it took me a second to process what was happening, it had only taken Brad half a second, and he was rushing toward the door with me in tow. “Gentlemen, please hold tight for a minute while we check on this.”

He got us out of the room and down the hall. “What is it, Sara?”

Her eyes widened and her voice cracked. “John collapsed in his office.”

“Dad?” All the blood in my body sank to my feet.

She began to cry. “They can’t revive him.”

When fate spares your life, your destiny is always love

Twenty-year-old widow and cancer survivor Taylor Smith-Taylor is running her late husband’s billion-dollar gaming business because she’s made a vow to keep TME—and Gavin’s memory—alive.

So I’d found this beautiful ginger jar for Mom. I lifted it up and asked the woman behind the counter, “How much for this?”

The shop lady looked me up and down and smiled. “Oh. I make good deal for you. Only hundred seventy-five dollar.”

It’s been a long time coming. Some might say too long.

Seven years ago while I was pregnant with my youngest child, my husband was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma cancer. He went through surgery, chemo and was pronounced cancer-free two weeks before my son Brady was born. During that season things moved so fast. I never dealt with the emotions I experienced while he was sick. But three years ago when a friend’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer, all of them came flooding back. As a result, I wrote A Taylor-Made Life.

A Taylor-Made Life became an Amazon Bestseller and I received letters from all over the world (e.g.UK, France, Uganda) saying how the story has touched hearts. It recently won the 2014 RomCon Reader’s Choice Award and was a finalist in the 2015 Electronic Publishing Industry Coalition’s (EPIC) eBook Awards. ATML also won several RWA chapter contests. It continues to touch people with its special message.

Now, two years after its release into the world, the next chapter in Taylor’s life is ready to be told and today we’re unveiling her new cover. I hope you love it as much as I do. Without further ado…

Contemporary New Adult

When fate spares your life, your destiny is always love

Twenty-year-old widow and cancer survivor Taylor Smith-Taylor is running her late husband’s billion-dollar gaming business because she’s made a vow to keep TME—and Gavin’s memory—alive.

No-nonsense attorney Lucy Furey is about to learn how her hotshot new partner earned the name Mr. Lucky, as he smoothly talks his way through the tightest negotiation she’s ever handled: the one for her heart.

EXCERPT

I scowled at her for a long time. I wasn’t angry, but thus far my smiles had failed to break her down. Perhaps my glare would. She continued to hold my gaze, but I could see her feathers ruffling. Her chest rose and fell more quickly, the sound of her breath evident in the quite room. I didn’t move.

She squirmed a little in her seat. “Mr. Luck, what do you want?”

My answer was simple and to the point. “You, Ms. Furey. Just you.”

Her jaw tightened. “If you think just because that computer—”

I cut her off. “I don’t think, Lucy. I know. From the moment I was hired you’ve been ignoring me. In fact, I went out of my way to be kind, while you in turn were deliberately rude. There were many nights I wondered what in the hell I’d done.”

“I’m sorry if I’ve been less than professional, Mr. Luck.”

I thought I saw a hint of a smile play at her lips, but I wasn’t ready to let her off the hook. Not yet. “Being professional is your—no, our—whole problem.” I stepped around her desk to move closer.

Her eyes widened, and the pulse in her neck, peeking out from her button-down blouse, was beating furiously. I could feel the heat, the energy, roiling in her. I braced my hands on either side of her chair and towered over her, our faces inches apart. She continued to hold my gaze, but it felt more like a gazelle in the panther’s path rather than the defiance she showed earlier. I licked my lips and dropped my gaze to hers. Those blue eyes darkened and she swallowed loudly. Yes! I had her. It was the first chink in her military-grade façade. I had to play it right or she’d spook.

“Even if you weren’t interested in dating me, you didn’t have to completely ignore me. Just because I’m attracted to you, doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.”

Her eyes widened more at my little gift. I pushed away from her face and sat on the edge of her desk.

“I don’t believe you.”

Now I was angry. “That’s not fair. You don’t even know me.”

“I don’t have to know you to know that you’re not a safe bet.”

I whispered, “And do you know what happens to people who always take the safe bet?” She didn’t answer, though I know she heard. I suspected she couldn’t speak. Hell, I could barely speak being so close to her. “They lose.”

“I’m sorry if I’ve been less than professional, Mr. Luck.”

“Damn it, Lucy. Stop with the Mr. Luck shit! Call me Lucas, Luke. Hell, I’d settle for asshole at this point.” I thought I saw a hint of a smile play at her lips, but I wasn’t ready to let her off the hook. Not yet. “And being professional is your—no, our—whole problem.” I stepped around her desk to move closer.

“I don’t believe you.”

“You don’t think I can be friends with you even though I want to make love to you?”

Her cheeks colored. “No, that’s not what I mean. But no to that, too.”

“Then what do you mean?” I kept my tone casual, conversational. This was the most she’d spoken to me since we started working together.

“I don’t believe you want to…that you’re attracted to me. I think you see me as a challenge, and once the chase is done, you’ll be done.”

Now I was angry. “That’s not fair. You don’t even know me.”

“I don’t have to know you to know that you’re not a safe bet.”

I’d had enough. I was sick of being judged. And God help me, I wanted this woman. When I’d said I wanted to make love to her, it wasn’t a lie. My body stirred. I moved in again and leaned over her. She sat stone-cold still except for her heavy breaths.

I whispered, “And do you know what happens to people who always take the safe bet?” She didn’t answer, though I know she heard. I suspected she couldn’t speak. Hell, I could barely speak being so close to her. “They lose.”

Excerpt:

RAMPANT CUPIDITY

“I’ve done years of private studies on female sexual function…”

Hux was completely absorbed in the science perspective of this conversation because his eyes darkened with a passion that I now knew was only stirred by his work. Well, I was not to be deterred. I pushed my front against his back. “Really, and how many women have you ‘studied,’ Doctor?” I let my whisper touch his ear.

Hux’s voice wavered a little, but he continued, albeit with a more breathy tone. “W-well, most of my studies have been purely on paper.”

“Maybe you’d like to test your theories on a warm body.” I moved around his chair and hopped up on the long lab desk, allowing my white coat to fall open and reveal my low-cut blouse and short skirt. What had I been reduced to? I’d become what I hated, but I couldn’t help myself. I crossed my legs and smiled seductively.

Hux stared. For an instant his eyes bulged then darkened. He sat there frozen for a long second.

I just licked my lips, waiting.

Excerpt:

The elevator doors close, and I can’t help the giggles that erupt from my chest. That was the most insane, fun thing I’ve ever done in my life. Even if it was a little harrowing at times.

Mr. Scorge, his face once again shuttered, looks at me speculatively. I laugh out loud, hoping to entice him into some elusive, emotion-laden expression—something that reveals he can grasp the humor of the situation—but his serious, no-nonsense glare stops me mid-cackle. He doesn’t look happy—he looks…something else. My heart trips over itself, trying to beat faster but falls to its knees instead. Heated desire rolls off Scorge in masculine waves.

Like a hungry predator, he prowls closer, turning to face me directly. My breath tries to help my heart off the ground but it fails.

He takes one more step and is rising over me. So close I can see grey-green flecks in his hard blue irises and feel the even brush of his breath against my temple. I gulp loudly, not sure if I’m excited or scared. Do I have to choose? He’s leaning closer still. Our noses are about to touch. A hint of a smile plays at the corner of his lips right before…

I hope you check out both stories. They’ll make you smile and feel good, I promise. **fingers crossed behind my back**

If you’re interested in being a part of the cover reveal you can join in at XPRESSO Book Tours.

This is actually one of my favorite scenes. It’s between Taylor and her friend from Stanford, Candy (by the way, keep an eye on Candy you might be seeing her again, hint, hint) If you know and love the cheesy 1982 movie sequel GREASE 2, you will LOVE this scene.

“So you were saying…Brad,” she said his name in a sigh, then belted out the first line of the GREASE 2 song, “His loafers were wegian. His chinos were black…”

I joined her. “With a cute little buckle that fastened in back.” Then I fell over on the sofa and laughed. “I cannot believe you just sang that.”

“We both just sang it. You know all the words too.”

I bit my lip and looked over at her. “There’s an instrumental version on YouTube.”

She gave me the most hilarious ‘Let’s do it!’ grin.

I pulled it up on my phone. And just like that. We were the twins in the movie, singing through the entire song about Brad, even doing the cheesy hand jives.

When the music ended, we both collapsed on the couch in a fit of laughter.

A slow methodical clap of hands came from somewhere behind us. I whipped my head around, saying a quick prayer which was obviously not quick enough.

He stood there, propping up the doorframe like it needed his coolness, looking all urban, and sexy, and far too entertained. “You know what they say about speaking of the devil.”

Oh I knew, and it apparently held true for singing about him too. I bit my upper lip, trying to keep my cheeks from melting off my face, and wishing my sofa would eat me.

“Hi.” I couldn’t bear to say his name. Not after I’d just been caught singing it like a bad audition from American Idol. Didn’t this building have security? Didn’t I have a secretary to screen my visitors and keep this kind of thing from happening?

“Uhh…I’ll just make my way back to the boys.” Candy stood, awkwardly pointed to some invisible place down the hall and left me there to fend for myself. Just up and left as fast as her chubby little legs would carry her. Turncoat.

I hope that gave you a chuckle and a reason to tune in next time. Thanks for reading.

What’s better than a love song for Valentine’s Day? A love song that two people share, that’s what.

My definition of a Duet is a single song recorded by two artists, successful in their own right, who don’t normally perform together.

So, while there may be other great love songs, or other more influential duets, this list combines the two in a best-of-the-best scenario.

You may be wondering why there aren’t many current songs on this list. The answer is simple: artists don’t tend to do duets anymore. There are many songs performed by artists today that have another artist “featured” on the song (e.g. We Found Love by Rhianna, featuring Calvin Harris or Crazy In Love Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z) but for the purpose of this list I chose to include songs billed as duets.

Endless Love, Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross (1981) Not only the greatest duet love song, one of the all-time greatest love songs, period. The 1981 movie stunk so bad that they decided to remake it last year to only slightly better reviews. I never saw either movie, but I love this song. But really, what’s not to love about a song titled Endless Love?

You Don’t Bring Me Flowers, Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond (1978) From the 1980 Grammy’s, to this day, this video documents one of the greatest moments in the award show’s History. Legend has it that a Radio Personality in Kentucky spliced together the two artists’ solo recordings of the song as a “Going Away Present” for his wife whom he’d just divorced. The spliced record got so much national attention that the artists had to record the song as a duet.

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (1967) Written by the songwriting power house of Ashford and Simpson, this song is an upbeat Motown love song that hit the Billboard charts as a duet with Gaye and Terrell and then again two years later by Diana Ross.

Almost Paradise, Ann Wilson and Mike Reno (1984) Originally released on Mike Reno’s solo album Strike Zone, the song is also listed as the Love Theme for the 1984 movie Footloose.

Baby Come To Me, James Ingram and Patti Austin (1981) Originally released 1991, the song never broke the Top 100, until in 1983 Executives for the wildly popular daytime drama General Hospital used it as the infamous Luke and Laura theme song. Warner Bros. rereleased the song and it hit #1 on the Hot 100 Adult Contemporary charts.

It’s Your Love, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw (1997) The first song Billboard Top 10 song recorded by the husband and wife duo. And the heat and emotion just rolls off the music in waves.

Unforgettable…With Love, Natalie Coe and Nat King Coe (1991) Originally released By Nat King Cole in 1951, the song’s vocal track was digitally remastered and released as a duet with Nat King Cole’s Daughter, Natalie in 1991—26 years after his death. It won 3 Grammys in 1992, including Song of the Year

Tonight I Celebrate My Love, Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson (1983) The song peaked in the US at #16 and revived the flagging careers of both artists. One of the most romantic songs ever recorded.

Up Where We Belong, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warrens (1982) Recorded as the Love Theme for the 1982 film, An Officer and a Gentlemen, this Grammy award-winning, platinum selling song also won the 1983 Golden Globe and Oscar for best song. It is by far the most decorated song on our illustrious list.

Say Something, A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera (2013) The Grammy award-winning song was originally recorded as a solo. But used during a performance on So You Think You Can Dance, it gained the attention of Pop Star Christina Aguilera who recorded a duet with the two-man indie band, A Great Big World in 2013.
