We hate Omar Abdullah.....

We hate Omar Abdullah...and why should not we hate him. We have all the reasons in this world to hate him. If an innocent dies on road, he gets worried and does not want any further killing to take place and imposes curfew. Is it not a bad administration that the Chief Minister worries about the civilian deaths?? He is not supposed to and behave like others who showed no interest.

We hate Omar Abdullah.. and why should we not hate him. He walks out straight from the bedroom wearing a T-shirt and gets on the business. The GAP T shirt is the issue to discuss and what he discussed at the meeting was never discussed because how dare he talk business without dressing in traditional pathani dress and a dussa (Men shawl). And why does he have to worry?? He should have bothered about his dressing sense before discussing the Kashmir unrest.

Army deployment.. Hey friend's how many of us saw Army men actually deployed on the road assisting civil administration. But still how should be bothered about preventing further loss of life?? After all there are people who want these deaths to take place.

So what is Omar Abdullah being accused of.. What is his guilt?? What is the charge against him?? Hurriyat Conference chickened out or the Central government stepped back from the talks or quiet diplomacy?? What is the fault of Omar Abdullah?? May be, because he is the Chief Minister of the politically-complex state at a wrong time..
As one of the CEO of a company told me a month back in Mumbai. Please shift your Chief Minister to some other state and we will just shower investment because of his vision which is wonderful and development oriented. I wonder why Omar Abdullah thinks so much about the unemployment. Can you please answer Omar Abdullah why did you want to have the correct figure of unemployed youths in the state immediately upon your taking over as the Chief Minister?? After all your predecessor's also carried with the figure of 28,232 unemployed youths. What was the necessity of carrying out a census to know the exact number of unemployed youths and getting the actual number which was nearly six lakh.

And how dare you Mr Chief Minister to get a commandant of BSF arrested and a Colonel and two Majors of Army being charge sheeted for targeting innocents and killing them. You should have carried on with the healing touch of your predecessor Mufti Sayeed which remained confined to public consumption and slogan shouting. How dare you actually translate zero tolerance towards human rights violations into reality?? That's bad Mr Chief Minister.. after all there are over 100 shops of human rights and 50 other experts who write about police excesses. You have left them unemployed?? I mean how could you?????

So how many have you annoyed in last 18 months of your rule -- the para-military forces, the Army, people with vested interests, human rights experts and Kashmir experts.

And lastly how can you think about the poor people like shikarawala's and sumo drivers and make efforts to bring so many tourists -- ah lemme guess six lakh in first six months -- Don't you know Kashmir is an issue where poor people have right to live. You are at fault Mr Chief Minister...... Alas, this can happen too. We have to punish him for his pro-people deeds.

Kashmir: Media absence ensures peace in valley

Media gagged in Kashmir!!! This was a question enough to puzzle me during my stay in the Kashmir valley. The valley has been without local newspapers for last three days and surprisingly things are returning fast back to normal.

So have the rules of the game changed. I had heard pen is mightier then the sword but here I was seeing silence of pen is mightier then what could not be achieved in the valley for past one week -- Peace at last. I tried to find reasons during my various meetings with officials, journalists, locals as to why the newspapers are not allowed to publish and surprisingly no one was bothered. The end user -- locals -- were happy that the newspapers did not come as otherwise it contained news about the separatist calendars for protest, warning people, threatening people and somewhere in the second or third page you could find some news in a two by two column about the activities of government.

Has the government been non functional? The answer seems to no as if it was that non functional, then I guess the state would not have surpassed the tourism figures of not only 1990s and 2000s but also of 1986-87 when Kashmir had no trouble. This government meant business and working quietly which was not acceptable to the vested interests of this state. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, whose administrative capabilities are uncontested, would not have showered praises on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on his developmental work if he did not find so

So media, which is considered as a fourth pillar of the democracy, in Kashmir seems to be full of agenda barring a few exception especially local journalists representing some prominent Jammu daily newspapers. As I say that i do not believe in histories and therefore, I will stick to it. A case was registered against a private Television Channel for inciting mob in a district in South Kashmir. The TV news had broadcast that one person had died in firing and mob came out on streets hurling stones, an incident in which one DySP was injured. The TV channel decided to air an apology only after a case was registered against its correspondents and the channel itself. The government only wanted truth that no one had died.

Another "respected" journalist of a prominent daily had reported that Hazratbal Mosque had been sealed and no prayers were offered. God, the television -- especially the private one's -- are airing footage of prayers being held but this gentleman decided to turn his blind eye to that and faithfully report what was fed to him by his masters -- I guess PDP in this case.

So today after the government decided to crack its whip on "fictitious reporting", the journalists gathered and decided to lodge its protest against the high-handedness of government. I tried to inquire about the reason for protest from a very senior editor of prominent daily and was surprised to hear his answer that he was standing because others asked him to and he is not aware of the reason.

Its time to take a ride in a boat in Dal lake and the shikarawala surprised me more about his view on media saying "Saheb, yeh Kashmir ki gutter hai, bandh rahe to better hai {This (media) is the stinking drain of Kashmir, the more it remains close, the better it is for Kashmir}.

Omar: An honest politician

Its been a painful month for the people of Kashmir who all of sudden find themselves at the cross roads again as "vested elements" have snatched their livelihood yet again. Now who is responsible for this is a million dollar question for "intellectuals" who call themselves as "Kashmir experts" but for me, I would simply blame Pakistan, PDP, Syed Ali Shah Geelani as these three parties have merged together and are injecting venom in the veins of our Generation Next. For them killing of a few innocents is nothing as has been found from the taped conversations.

Now the interesting aspect of the present turmoil is the growing presence of "I Protest" bandwagons on social websites like facebook. Makes me laugh and cry at the same time that how can a person, who can afford to sit on Internet and spread venom, be sympathetic to a poor Shikarawala of a taxi driver on the roads, whose business had come to standstill. On one hand these people carrying out activities on Internet while sitting on their cosy bedrooms and drawing rooms and on the other, a poor boatman is praying in his boat for things to get better so that he could earn for his children and save something for rainy days. No but these self-styled contractors of religion will never agree to this. They have to inject venom and so they will do.

And for Omar Abdullah, the young chief minister who came with dreams in his eyes of a better and developed Kashmir, it is a situation where he does not only have to battle some of his own party leaders but also the divided Congress camp and Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

I suddenly found him in the middle of crisis where he is receiving flak from all sides for calling out Army. He has been accused of mismanagement of law and order situation in the state. But is he??? Now this is a million dollar question. A Chief Minister is bothered that his people should not die on roads -- Is this inefficiency? A Chief Minister requests political parties not to play divisive politics -- Is this inept handling? A Chief Minister is firm on his security personnel and asks them for restraint -- Is this an immature approach??? The poor man came with his dreams of bringing in Information Technology into the state, bringing in industries in the state, lift Kashmir to heights on global tourism map -- I guess that was enough to unnerve the people across the border and "vested interests" in the state. Why do processions take place??? Not because of inept handling or lack of governance, its because others are over working. Why cant people like an honest politician??? Is being honest and clean hearted a crime in politics these days??? I guess it is. Had Omar been like his predecessors, things would have been on a better side today. Had he not bothered about the killings of innocents, many more would have died. Crucify him if he is wrong...but Kashmiris privately admit that he is a wonderful CM who is being wronged for no fault of his. And when I asked them to speak it in open, they would chicken away as the "big brother" (read Pakistan and its stooges) is listening.

I jumped out of my seat during a discussion when I was told that Kashmir has never seen so much of violence before. Says who, was a impromptu question from my side because I remembered the figures of violence which I will share in the next paragraph. This was enough to silence the critics. Write against him if he does any wrong but why penalise him for no fault of his. At least this is what a journalist is supposed to do.

According to National Crime Records Bureau of the Union Home Ministry, in 2003, the year the People's Democratic Party-Congress alliance government took office, six people were killed in 47 incidents involving the use of force by police. Thirteen civilians were killed in 2004 when the then Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed completed his first year in office. Besides this, Police is recorded to have opened fire on 123 occasions.

In 2005, fatalities in police firing rose sharply to 50 and the State government withdrew BSF committed to counter-insurgency operations in Srinagar and replaced them with the CRPF in an effort to contain killings of civilians.

In 2006, the year Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad took office, there were no civilian fatalities caused by police. Even though Srinagar saw some violence that summer, in the course of protests against a prostitution racket in which politicians were implicated, there was little bloodshed. But in 2007, eight civilians were killed in 47 instances of police firing.

Civilian deaths rose sharply in 2008 — during the Amarnath agitation, and the State government reported 43 deaths and 317 injuries in 379 incidents involving use of force by police.

Any comments now???? I guess none will come....

Gen Pal: Should his head not hang in shame?????

Well, this was really a treat to my eyes and my blood started pumping with more vigour as I read the newspapers this morning talking about how the then Corps Commander of 15 Corps Lt Gen Krishan Pal had mislead the nation about Kargil intrusion. Very few believed when I and my other like-minded scribes and thinkers thought that if India has to win the Kargil war, it first needs to turn the mouth of Bofors gun towards this disgraced General who was not playing only with the sovereignty of the nation but with the youth of this country who had joined the Army.
The result was that while others were checked out of the war zone, I had to end up been beaten by some army jawans in Hotel Zozila's room number 306 (ostensibly as a case of mistaken identity). At last, justice prevailed and poor Batalik-based Brigade commander Devinder Singh got justice. He not only got his honour back but also forced the Army to rewrite the battle history (has anyone heard of this).
Well dear readers, my point is not to bore you with the details of what you may have read in the newspapers but to underline a fact that Gen Pal was habitual in hiding things from the government. When the first patrol of Lt Saurabh Kalia went missing, he had hid the fact from his superiors and Government for long. At least till the heat of Kargil war swept his feet away and Pakistanis returned the body of brave Indian soldiers in a mutilated condition. And when We reported, Gen Pal put all his machinery at his disposal to deny the story with assistance from the Army headquarters.
When the turn for gallantry medals came, Gen Pal ignored the supreme sacrifice of Lt Kalia and his men -- whose disappearance had given the first signals of intrusion -- and instead chose to stand the queue for medal and got it also (sycophancy pays).
Another such incident was that of November 4, 1999 when heavily-armed terrorist of Lashker-e-Taiba entered into Army Cantonment and gunned down Major Pramod Purushottam (God I miss him even today with the same intensity). While I was reporting about the attack, what puzzled me when one of my senior was summoned by the office of the then Defence Minister George Fernandes. The issue was that Gen Pal had informed the Ministry and Army headquarters that the attack was not on cantonment but outside and media was unnecessarily playing it up.
Major Purushottam not only showed exemplary courage and bravery in taking the entire heat of the attack but also showed presence of mind in ensuring safety of two journalists who had come to see him. Wish Purushottam had allowed the terrorists to sneak up to Gen Pal's office, at least the moron could have seen actual battle.
Now wonder will the self-decorated General Pal, who must have achieved all his medals through a canard of lies (at least three examples are there), be ever tried for his lies. Will the nation set an example by punishing at least one of these red-collared Generals.

KASAB AND MUMBAI POLICE

What could be happening. Is it raining bullets? Are people running away? These thoughts were going in my mind at a height of 24,000 feet in a Jet Aiways plane while I was on way to Mumbai on the afternoon of November 27, 2008 (Thursday). Barely a week before this terror strike, I was in megalopolis in connection with the Malegaon blast investigation which had shown extremists belonging to a little known Hindu group having done this act. For me things were definitely not the same as I was missing Hemant Karkare and Ashok Kamte - two officers whom I had met during my trip. Little did I know that I will be writing their obituary a week later. (May their soul rest in peace).

   As the plane touched the runway, I switched on my phone only to see that there were some messages. Immediately upon arrival along with a colleague of mine, I met another fellow scribe and we were quick enough to exchange our notes. One person had been picked up by Mumbai police (God give solace to Tukaram Omble's soul) but no one was sure of the identity. After a calls by my fellow guy from the fraternity, we came across the name as Ajmal Amir Amin Mir alias "Kasai" which later turned out to b Ajmal Amir Kasab. After necessary formalities of stories over a period of following days, the picture was clear that Kasab was the modern face of terrorism whose face will haunt several families for years to come. He has been sentenced to Death and rightly so.
   But my issue is not Kasab, because from the word go of the trial was to end in the verdict -- to be hanged till dead, what intrigues me is the role of Mumbai's stake holders (read Shiv Sena and MNS). I believe their must be too many rat holes where these stake holders must have stashed themselves.    What I want to focus is on lies of Mumbai Police in the case for implicating Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed. Tough they are being tried in other cases in Uttar Pradesh, why were they implicated in this case? And for few actors, Kasab proved to be a platform to jump into limelight.

Rakesh Maria, the then Joint Commissioner of Crime and Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, emerged as self-styled heroes in this field. All riding on the piggy of hard work of extremely intelligent officials of Intelligence Bureau who spent days and nights tracking every movement. While they were toiling to get all the clinching evidence to nail Pakistan, Maria and his gang were busy conceiving a mischievous plan of hogging the limelight and were helped by then Commissioner of Police Hassan Gafoor, who had hid himself in a hall rather than being in a control room of police. The case went to crime branch and within no time, two people were picked from Uttar Pradesh jail -- Fahim Ansari and Sabbauddin Ahmed -- I jumped out of my bed because these arrests were made by February 2008 and I had, through my contacts, procured their interrogation report where they had said that they wanted to carry out reconnaissance of Mumbai but could not manage. What is their role in this attack, was a constant question that I was asking myself. Even the charge sheet filed by the Mumbai Crime Branch against these two was nothing but lies lies and lies. The only truth in the voluminous charge sheet was the intercepts made by IB officials and other details provided by the US investigators. A concerted campaign was launched by Maria and his gang by their so-called leaks to media. (The leaks were bigger than Bhopal gas tragedy with only difference that in Bhopal human lives were lost but here the brains of lakhs of Indians were washed).
   Maria would have carried through with his bunch of lies had not David Headley arrest been made by the FBI and subsequently his confession of carrying out all reconnaissance activities for Lashker-e-Taiba terror group. Maria did not know where to hide his face after Headley slapped on his investigation from thousands of miles in Chicago.

Ujjwal Nikam, a lawyer, who represented the state pretended as if Maria's truth was the final verdict about Ansari and Ahmed. He, no less than a clown, stood in front of media and projected as if he had just turned the tables in favour of Indians. Nikkam Saheb, wake up...the court gave death to Kasab whom the entire world had watched spraying bullets at innocents. Nikkam could manage to make the media follow but not the Honourable Judge of the court who lambasted him for lies on Ansari and Ahmed. Even a rookie lawyer could have ensured death penalty for Kasab then what is the big deal about you. Any Answers.

Himanshu Roy: God I feel like laughing when he appeared in a white dress and denim before the media today and started narrating the proceedings inside the court. An officer, who is generally perceived as a page three hopper in Mumbai circles, was talking about Kasab and investigations and blah blah blah till he came to the HIS MASTERS VOICE. "The investigations done by Maria ji......." enough for me to switch off the television set. Rather shut the "stud Roy".
So friends this is Mumbai Police and Nikkam's role in the entire investigations....God bless this country and help us get rid of such rats. Amen

   What we missed on these days: So many things, I guess...and over a period of time I have been seeing that Television news has been corrupting and narrowing the intellectual skills of the country. I am writing this blog after so many days because somewhere in this world at least one person will be happy to see me back on this sphere of writing. The issue today I have chosen is the "Breaking News" concept of Television Channels.
   The nation saw two major controversies breaking in these days -- corruption in Indian Premier League and Phone Tapping of telephones -- Stop and think for a moment, whether this was something new. While the Indians were seen debating and passing the buck or stopping the buck somewhere, 500 kilometres from Raipur in India's Chattisgarh state, nearly 120 jawans were sending SOS messages to their headquarters for ration, drinking water and mosquito repellent cream as they have been encircled by Naxals, who are only blocking essential supplies to them.
   No buck was stopped or braking the news was done for these hapless para-military personnel who are ready to shed every drop of their blood for their "Mother Land" ( I guess this word has lost relevance). Ah there is a noted socialite from Mumbai whom you can find on a prime television channel discussing everything -- Nuclear issues, rape, mowing down of people in BMW, IPL, Phone tapping as if there was an intellectual bankruptcy in the country.
   The other was about closing down of airport in Kashmir between June 20 to July 10 because of the Indian Air Force wanted to carryout the resurfacing of the runway. This decision meant that over a lakh population in Kashmir would have suffered. From hoteliers to an ordinary Shikara wala would have suffered. And silently away from the flashing TV channels was seen Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah walking from one ministry to another to ensure that the tourism season did not suffer. He succeeded and ensured that the plan was deferred till the tourism season was a little low. His reason was that both tourism and Amarnath Yatra would have suffered as not only tourists but pilgrims used the air travel. This news was never seen on any television set. After all the suffering of people does not bring them at TAM or TRP ratings. A big man or woman has to be involved.
   Phone tapping brought another scam of auction of 2G in which a prominent PR personality has accused of lobbying for a minister. Ironically, the PR personality phones have some intercepts with a prominent TV English News Anchor (any guesses) and a former Editor of a major English daily. Wonder whether anything is ever going to happen. At least that TV news channel has given it a decent burial, I only wonder how soon the newspapers would also stop it.
   I will try and bring this blog to life...With love and now let me keep a watch on further breaking. One day I may end up breaking the TV itself. But I guess the cartoon below explains our TV channels the best...please do down load it.(courtesy toondo.com)

remember me...Ah! I guess you must have forgotten this blog of mine. All this while I have been travelling places and have gathered lot of "masala". During the forthcoming days, I will share my experiences with Army on China, Shopian case, Kashmir and besides some more links about "Mumbai Meri Jaan". Ah some of the commentators have said they want to know my eye glass number. So dear friend, I don't wear any. Criticism is welcome but a healthy one will be appreciated. JAMMU-KASHMIR POLICE A SAGA OF SACRIFICE and courage TO GO TO JAIL..

Jammu-Kashmir Police ke hum, Janbaaz sipahi hum... (Jammu and Kashmir Police “A Saga of Sacrifice and courage)

This is the song and motto of Jammu and Kashmir Police, braving militancy for last two decades. Nowadays as the militancy is showing a decline, the police have found a new job -- trapping its own men for no fault of theirs.. after Shopian one feels that the motto of Jammu and Kashmir Police “A Saga of Sacrifice and courage” needs to be changed to A Saga of Sacrifice and courage TO GO TO JAIL..

Shopian case – alleged rape and murder of two women – reminds me of a bed time story where an innocent is hanged because his neck fit the noose…though my granny narrated this story in a hilarious way but I realised the ugly face recently when I found four policemen behind bars – thanks to a High Court order, unheard in the legal history of this country.

Superintendent of Police Javed Iqbal Mattoo and his Deputy Rohit Baskotra might have questioned their wisdom of serving in Kashmir when Kashmiri officers were either running away from fighting militancy or having a prize posting using political clout. An analysis of posting and transfers of police officials has seen that so called promote IPS officials from Kashmir division have either chosen to remain confined to police headquarters or administrative division or posting in Delhi while the war against terrorism in the valley.

Ironically, poor Baskotra was away in Anantnag for five days when the alleged rape and murder case had taken place and Mattoo was trying to get a proper post-mortem report so that a decision could be taken as to how the investigations should proceed. What could Mattoo or the SHO do when the doctor decided to chicken out and did not give a proper autopsy report?

I guess ever since the bodies of two ladies were recovered on May 30, the entire administration has been trying to find a scapegoat in police – ignoring the heavy presence of Jamaat-e-Islamia cadres in Shopian area. The police did not even get time to find the culprits as people poured down in dozens and dozens. Eh! What was this…pro-Pakistan slogans, pro-independence slogans, demand for withdrawal of security forces in the area…did anyone realize that the protests were for women, who were allegedly raped and murdered. Time and again Kashmir has been a witness to such mockeries, where vested interests have used such occasions to raise anti-national bogey.

And now comes judiciary – the order issued recently by a division bench surprised many legal luminaries – I believe some of them must be scratching their heads after two judges ordered the investigating officers – newly appointed Inspector General (Kashmir) Farooq Ahmed and his two “ace” investigators to arrest these four police officials.

Can a Judge Order investigating official to arrest anyone? Well, I guess no and was quickly reminded of the infamous sex scandal of Kashmir when a division bench directed a Deputy Inspector General of CBI Pankaj Singh to carryout arrests of all the accused as per the list circulated in the media. To his credit, Singh refused to carry out the order and stated in an open court that the power of arrests remained with the investigating officer, which is done after gathering all proofs and evidence.

The sex scandal case was taken out from the limits of Jammu and Kashmir jurisdiction and trials were conducted In Chandigarh as it had become next to impossible for even getting a bail for the accused.

In this case, the High Court took away the right of all subordinate courts and said any bail moved for the police officials should be referred to the division bench even when Supreme Court has been categorised that bail is a right of every individual. But I guess the interpretation of law changes when it comes to Kashmir valley, where views of separatists have to be taken into consideration. Then wonder who is calling the shots..

Eh! Not to forget, the famous Narco-Analysis test ordered by the High Court. This part of the order needs to be understood: “We direct the Special Investigating Team to produce those four officers on arrest before the Registrar Judicial on a date and time to be fixed in consultation with Registrar Judicial, High Court of J&K Srinagar for the purpose of drawing their blood sample, on being drawn, shall be sealed by.....The DNA of those police official shall, thereupon, be matched with the DNA profile of the vaginal semen of the deceased ladies....."

"We also feel that it would be appropriate on the part of the Special Investigating Team to undertake Narco-Analysis Test of those four police officers..."

This part of the order was enough to make jump the top echelons of the state police force to go in for appeal as one cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that the poor Dy SP was not aware of the case because of his pre-occupation in recruitment in Anantnag and SP, who was awaiting report from the SHO.

Ironically, while its an order for four police officials, it has been left to the wisdom (which according to me is questionable) of SIT to decide whether it wishes to carry out the Narco-test on the two witnesses, against whom questions have been raised from the day one.

The order reads: “In the event the Special Investigating Team is of the view that those two witnesses....also need to be put to such test, it shall inform the same to the central government...”

So what is the deal…Should the police force learn a lesson and join ranks with separatists and enjoy a better life style. Well readers, I am writing this blog, knowing fully well, that separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani are enjoying cool breeze in guest house at Cheshma Shahi, dare-devil officials like Mattoo and Baskotra are sleeping on hard beds of jail.

For your tomorrow, we gave our today… but one wonders what our tomorrow is!!!!

Well, changing the name is not possible. I must admit that the blog was intended to revolve around Kashmir and the problem but certain issues come up and are close to my heart. Hence, I don't mind taking up the same and put across to my readers.

Lt Saurabh Kalia: The story behind his heroic death

''When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today"

All of sudden, in this materialistic world, I forgot a part of my life. Let me take out a leaf out of history and pay tribute to Lt Saurabh Kalia (made Captain posthumously). It was a Wednesday and I was busy making last minute arrangements at my Srinagar office to return to Kargil on the next day (June 10, 1999). Suddenly my office phone rang and it was one of my darling friends from Army calling. His voice was not the same and still reverberates in my ears. A usually smart officer is asking me to call him from some PCO and refused to answer any of my inquisitive journalistic questions.

Little did I know that, I was writing a portion of history of the infamous Kargil war while I left in a hush manner from the office along with one of my senior colleague. Half-a-kilometre away, we managed to find a PCO from where I attempted to call my Army friend. And guess what, the phone was engaged thus not only increasing my blood pressure but also heart beat. Tring tring….the phone is ringing and I just held the hand of my senior colleague as he was making all signals to calm me down.

“Write fast. Lt Kalia’s body handed over in Kaksar sub-sector along with five soldiers of 4-Jat. Mutilated severely. Their eyeballs have been gouged out and noses, genitals chopped off. Cigarette marks on their bodies. Tempers are high…” and he hung up. Tried calling him up again but he did not pick up this time.

What happened…? Was the question from my colleague. Though he was questioning me about the news but I guess he was waking me from a shock I had received after hearing the caller on other side.

After recovering from the shock, I felt so sad about being a journalist. “What are we? Someone has died because of a merciless torture by Pakistani Army and now we are supposed to write a story? What will happen to his family? What if he was just married?”

The dilemma of a journalist and a common man was topping the agenda of my brain for sometime till the senior colleague of mine gave me a “Gita updesh” and asked me to do my “karma”. And no sooner, I was at the telex machine broadcasting the news to the nation and possibly to the world about the supreme sacrifice made by Lt Kalia and his team. Camouflaging the dateline with that of Kargil, I made an attempt to save my source in the Army.

The News was there everywhere. Few Television channels and all international wire agencies were broadcasting and typing in the news. Some of my seniors were calling from Delhi complimenting me for breaking the news and I was wondering whether I should be happy or sad. What are you journalists made of? And suddenly there was a fight between me and my conscience. Though the battle still continues within me but on that day, I was left flabbergasted over the attitude of Army officials sitting in the Directorate of Military Intelligence which send its Brigadier to one of my seniors denying the news. However, he was reluctant to give the same in writing. Here I should thank my boss, who stood by me and showed the door to the Brigadier. And by evening, those denying ended up with an egg on their faces when International Committee of Red Cross and Indian Red Cross confirmed my story.

A contended journalist in me had a smile but a human being in me was still crying for the loss of a young life. That was the restless night for me as I was trying to imagine what could have been going in the mind of Kalia. Was 22 an age for him to die in such a gruesome manner? What would be going on his family? What would have happened to his family members. After talking to martyr Kalia’s father, I bowed by head in respect towards the entire family but what bothers me still is that why did Army attempted to deny the story at the first instance? And why did the Army authorities and those in the Government find it fit to decorate Lt Kalia and his men who woke up a sleepy nation and a sleeping Army.

Shopian, Omar Abdullah and Kashmir. The only common thing with them is that they hold the key to each other in maintaining sanity. By the way hello readers, its me again. I know that my blog has lost its readership but this blog is dedicated to a dear dear friend who wants me to write (though never insisted so). Well, this friend of mine does not that I wish to save my readers from the torture of going through my posts... Anyways, of late, I have travelled virtually to every nook and corner of the Kashmir valley and met cross section of people.

Well, I was trying to understand Kashmir's people again. Why do they go hyper over issues? Shopian incident was something which should not have happened but did anyone give time to Omar Abdullah to react to the situation. The very next day, people were on streets enforcing bandhs.And even before Omar could react, he found himself drowned in confusion and chaos from every side. The truth of Shopian can be found only in Shopian and one needs to talk to the neighbourhood of the victims...the truth is there but no one is willing so say that. The doctors who conducted the postmortem on the two victims have surprisingly written no cause of death and privately they have acknowledged that they have found nothing fishy. But still who will bell the cat?????

The irony lies in another fact which has been found in this town of South Kashmir, predominantly a Hizbul Mujahideen militant dominated area and having a considerable Jamaat population.

Ten kilometres from the site of Shopian village lies another dead body of a girl who has been brutally raped and later murdered by Hizbul Mujahideen militants. Barely a few days before after the Shopian incident, Nigeena Awan was dragged out of her home at Kellar, beaten up and executed with an assault weapon from point blank range. Her father, Mohammad Sharif Awan, was ordered to bury his daughter without ceremony; the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, which carried out the execution, also warned neighbours against dignifying her death with last rites.

Hours after her death, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti visited Shopian to stage a protest against the alleged rape and murder of two local women — one of them, like Awan, a high school student. The death of Awan execution did not figure anywhere in her speech nor did it in speeches of clerics who have emerged as the key leader of the Shopian protests. No one has called for the men who killed Awan to be found and prosecuted. No one even bothered to visit her family, even though the hamlet of Pahlipora at Kellar is just a 10-km drive from Shopian.

People, sitting back at their homes in posh drawing rooms, have already started giving numbers to Omar Abdullah for his performance. Some are giving him four out of 10 and some even minus five. I don't hold a brief for Omar but would like to ask these people a question. Stand in front of mirror and and answer to your own self, what wrong has Omar done. He only promised to bring out truth and all he requires to have some time. Cant we give him. At least his track record of bringing out the truth has been 100 per cent be it in Sopore incident or be it a canard spread by PDP MLA about damages in Bandipore.

Omar has come and is aware of the expectations that the younger generation have from him. Let us Give him a chance. Does he not deserve one??? I have never met him but still have faith in him...Let us pray that our Kashmir becomes a heaven on earth...a true heaven. Amen....

Thackeray has started barking again....

When I was thinking of going to bed after a day's long work, suddenly a news item on television caught my attention -- Maharastra's Navnirman Sena -- led by Raj Thackeray -- attacking a school in Nashik which was celebrating Republic Day. Eh! What happened. I had heard this happening in Kashmir when some premises were targeted by militants for celebrating Republic Day, why in Maharashtra. Oh! it was school which taught some North Indian languages. And who is this Raj Thackeray? Leaves me wondering, if I am not mistaken then he seems to be the same person who closed himself behind the four walls of his house due to fear of 10 mid-20's youths from Pakistan on November 26. I wonder this guy has a cheek to come out again and indulge in such activities. May be a politician, of third rate class, can do this. I feel people like him should be sentenced to death without any trial or may be shot publicly so that no one dared to raise such kind of ugly head again. May be this may seem to be mad suggestion but one day this will a necessary measure to tackle such incorrigible people, whom Almighty forgot to put some brains while sending on earth. least did Mr Thackeray forget that it was the North, South and East Indians who came and saved Mumbaikers on November 26 from the audacious attack by terrorists from Pakistan. Mumbai, which is called as a city that never sleeps, had gone into a deep slumber during the attack. It were people from other states which brought it to life again. Wish one of the terrorist could have killed insane people like him. Leaders like him can sit and issue statement only when they have ensured that enough policemen are there to guard their ass.

The incident of Mangalore is another example which can be seen as Talibanisation of Hinduism. Wonder what difference is between those maniacs who kill innocents all over the world in the name of Islam and these morons. Possibly a very thin line is dividing them but as we see the developments, the day is not far when this thin line will also break and I may have to rename my blog as INDIA CHOKED

deshdrohi -- a torture :(

Deshdrohi...Hey friends have you heard about this movie. I have a very dear friend who had been insisting that this movie needs to be watched and the leading actor Kamal Rashid Khan is a hunk and an actor by birth. The only thing where I went wrong was taking my dear dear friend on the face value. So let me try and recollect the trauma I had to undergo in watching this movie with my brother on a pirated DVD, a copy of which is available at all paan-bidi shops in Mumbai. The first scene begins at some village where a guy is regularly being beaten up by his father. Eh! is he the hero...yes hero...in his under-shirt showing his supposed to be masculine (read malnourished) body. A unique movie where a love song begins with 90 seconds of the movie. Thanks to the fast-forward button on the remote control which gave me a respite for sometime so that I could control my brains from exploding. His dialogue delivery was somewhat akin to a women vegetable vendor whose voice has lost its cord because of excessive shouting. Then comes a time when this malnourished hero transforms into Sylvester Stallone of Hollywood and starts beating bad men. Hello, wake up...I am only sharing a torture...Then comes a scene where the macho-man KRK emerges out from a garbage truck to kill one of the villain. That scene was quite close to reality. Garbage coming out from the right place. As I struggled towards the end, it was the time for KRK Saheb to surface from the ground and that too jumping 10 feet into air...as if somebody had kicked his bums asking him to get lost into the space. His shout....Shrivaaaaaaaaaaaastaaaaaaaaaaaaavvvvvvv.... I wished this earth bursts again and he goes back from where he came. And till I came to know that the entire movie was his contribution only...Producer/Lead role/lyrics/screenplay dialogue/story writer. On this occasion, I would like to thank the honourable Judges of the Bombay High Court who banned the movie and saved the Mumbaikers from the torture...at least for sometime. Ah I forgot to tell you the reason why I narrated you this story. I would recommend that this movie should be shown to terrorists (captured). Trust me they will start singing like parrots.

Has anyone seen Mr Shivraj Patil? Not meeeee. Well this is a general reply once journalist friends of mine try and and enquire about him. So if anyone asks me the count of Mumbai's 26/11 terror strikes, I say the official count is 183 but mine is 184, with Patil Saheb being one of them. The 4-Janpath, official residence of obnoxiously-incompetent and pre-historical Home Minister, which had been sprawling with flashing Police Control Room vans, barricades and traffic policemen (to stop the traffic so that other's are not infected due to his incompetence)...None are seen there. Wonder, whether he can have a peaceful sleep when he is the person of spreading incompetence in the key Home Ministry. Does his conscience not prick him? Does anyone not feel that he should come out in the open and apologise to all those widows, orphans because of his wrong policies. We know that our intelligence gathering mechanism is not that great and having an actionable intelligence is not possible always. But he is one such person, who instead of nursing the wounds of terror victims, used to sprinkle salt and all kind of spices over them. Has Congress Party, country's oldest and large cadre based party, gone so bankrupt that it cant call spade a spade?

In all his fairness, Omar Abdullah, after donning the cap of Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has been surprising every one with his surprise visit. Surprisingly, he finds himself surprised when normally the staff is missing and basking in the winter sun back at home. :) Welcome to the world of reality! Poor Omar does not know that missing from the office is the work culture of the state. Now if you hit at the employees, they will quickly start beating the militancy drum and show how pathetic their life has been with the militancy. Hello! this is the work culture of Jammu and Kashmir. Now what remains to be seen is whether Omar will be able to change this CULTURE. One thing is there that he is not suspending anyone but making an immediate replacement. A good political move and hope that the people of the state will realise that they only need to strengthen his hands. Give him a chance in all fairness. Kashmir has got a silver lining finally after so many years. Hello, excuse me, some of my readers will be thinking that this blog smells like as if the author is in awe of Omar Abdullah but its not like that. The author wishes to place on record his statement that he will try and reflect the actual mood of the people he had met during his stay in Kashmir.

Kashmiris, as usual were waiting with bated breath as to who was going to lead them after the nice performance in elections and as the days drew closer, it was clear that the new generation was knocking at the door. It was Omar Abdullah, a unanimous choice without any doubt. His victory rally back to Ganderbal with people dancing and jumping in joy...all was evident that Omar, an outsider few years back, had now become an insider....

As I walked through the lanes and by lanes for nearly two kilometres to attend his first public appearance at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket stadium, I was surprised that that my foot steps were being matched by thousands others, who had come to meet their young Chief Minister. For the fact I only remembered him saying sometime back that people will come together and walk with me to make a caravan of success in Jammu and Kashmir.

So, Mr Chief Minister, the task undoubtedly is difficult and you have miles to go... His every action is being watched carefully not only by the people of the state but may be the entire country. One mistake and things will start tumbling like a pack of cards. As they say, a god beginning is like half job done and for young Omar, half of things are done as the beginning has been wonderful.

Mr Chief Minister as others, I would also like watch you carefully and see that you succeed in your endeavour and I this blog as Kashmir -- a Road to prosperity.

HI friends, Thanks to those who waited and thanks to those even who did not wait for my next post. The last month has been historical as we did actually get rid of Mr Tip Top but the cost was very dear. It took over 180 eyes to shut before he was actually thrown out (wish I could think of a better word for thrown). Last month I have spent virtually in Mumbai for one reason or the other. My this post is in memory of Indian journalism, which received the most indecent burial on Marine at Mumbai. Are we a nation of one billion and do we actually stand united against terror? Is the new boom of Indian media (electronic journalism) helping or causing a dent to the image of India. I have seen 9/11 (US) and 7/7 (London) terror strikes but I am stressing on whether I saw even one body being shot by the over zealous camera persons. Anyways, this debate is long and dont wish to continue but would like to highlight our great electronic media and their role -- to which I am an eyewitness. These names -- rather big names -- who have shot to fame by doing theatrics either at Kargil, Kashmir or communal violence of Gujarat have been awarded Padamshrees and Padam Bushan's. Do they actually deserve it. I saw one of them pushing a fireman towards her camera even while we was trying to douse the fire. Can we put them in jail once and for all so that the country breathes in peace....

ITBP -- A kiss with death

Hello readers, for last 10 days, I have been trying to reach you but stuck with one thing or the other. Again, my laptop has been open for last four hours and I am trying to pen down my thoughts --- right, its Mr Tip Top yet again at his best. My dear Tip Top is not only inefficient but also a scared man. Four days back, Mr Tip Top took a ride from Safdurjung airfield to Jamia ground (seven minutes as the crow flies). Ah! He had to attend the raising day of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) but very few people must be knowing that having his disgraced presence at the function cost government exchequer nearly Rs two lakh...just to take him there. And see the guts of the man, he is preaching life and death to Jawans of this brave force, who kiss death everyday at the heights of Himalayas. After hearing his sermons on death, one did wonder what made him to fly this small distance...whom was he scared off -- May be three things -- terrorists, BRT Corridor or the fear of being lynched by the crowd, if recognised. I guess the third one has more chances as terrorists would not kill him because an inefficient person at the helm of affairs is a blessing in disguise for them. Congress will have to pay through their nose for having him. His performance alone may cost them nearly 80 Lok Sabha seats. God save this country and let us pray to Almighty not see him again. Amen

A Tribute....

Hi everyone there! This write up may be seen as a tribute from an unknown journalist to one of his (never known) fellow scribe Soumya Vishwanathan, a producer working with Headlines Today. I have never met her in my entire life but she is the one who again rattled my old wounds --- A life of a journalist. Often we journalists are the centre point for criticism from general public for we try an create sensations where there are none. No, its not right. We also want to report about the better things but where are the readers. Sex, crime, sensation...This is all today's reader wants to know. Oops! I think I am going bit philosophical...So I better shut up and concentrate on what I have in my mind. It was a usual evening for me till one of my friend's called me from an outstation assignment saying that Soumya was shot dead. Eh! Who Soumya...was my prompt answer but only to be cut short that the deceased was a producer in the TV channel where my friend worked. "SHE HAS BEEN SHOT DEAD...." Shot dead...the first instinct in me is handling the mouse of my computer to check whether that story has gone or not (I know its inhuman). The friend was weeping inconsolably and it took me few seconds to realise that I have to console her. After exchanging few words of comfort, which were definitely straight from the heart, I switched the TV channel to Headlines Today and saw its reporters covering the incident. Now the question is whether these reporters wanted to work at that time. Where they in a frame of mind to report about the incident about their colleague who was with them barely 24 hours back. The answer is NO because no one wants to do it but still we have to do it.

A chilly winter evening of January 31 while I was talking with my boss in Delhi, I got a call from one of my colleague in Kashmir saying that Parvaz Mohammad Sultan had been killed by terrorists. Parvaz, whom I had met few years before his death, was a loving person. Over the period of years, our friendship had bloomed into a bonding to an extent that we would never sleep without calling each other. I stood like an ice-man when my Kashmir colleague was giving me the shocking news. As I tried to find more about the incident, I was praying in my heart that the information may come wrong or he survives the gun shot wounds. But no, terrorists had fired so many bullets that he had lost the battle to death in his home only. Moreover, the terrorists had come looking for "someone else" and had decided to finish him as he was the best friend of their target. I did not get time to mourn his death properly and my fingers were typing the best of my stories -- A tribute to him while my eyes were wet. I still mourn his . But thanks to Jammu and Kashmir Police and central security agencies, his killers were brought to justice within two months of this incident.

Another such incident was that of Major Pramod Purushottam, the darling of media in terror-struck Kashmir valley. No one had struck that rapo with the media there. It was again an evening of November four of 1999 when I was bust preparing to celebrate the first birthday of niece, a call from my office made me go numb and I could not believe what I was being conveyed. Purushottam's proximity with me was an open secret. So my friends also knew that I will be a shattered one. Forgot the celebrations and here was I driving back to office -- only to be in thick and thin -- A tribute to this brave soldier of Indian Army, who won hearts with his talks and not by bullets. Again no time to mourn...A busy day of a journalist comes to an end...

The country is facing terror threat -- Indo-US Nuclear deal hai na...The Congress Government in our great country started with the agenda of Indo-US nuclear deal and continued with grit and determination till they achieved this goal. No No, I am not cynical about the nuclear deal like the bunch of Left wing party (anyways they are now LEFT over now). After all we have over come the nuclear isolation in the world and I bow my head in respect to this government. But excuse me, a much bigger problem is dancing on our head. Terrorism..Wonder who is going to solve this issue -- George Bush. Suddenly this question popped out and my attention was drawn towards Home Ministry and Home Minister and now I have a chill running down my spine and I pull the quilt over me and want to be like other fellow countrymen (Saanu Kyi). Some of my readers (though very few) have asked me one should talk about solutions rather than problems. Well, today's country's political scene is like "Santa Singh or Banta Singh, one and the same thing". Oops! The reason why brought the great Indo-US nuclear deal in this small blog of mine is because that it seems that the entire Government was working for this only. Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Foreign Secretary, Shyam Saran (Special Envoy on Deal) -- TILL HERE IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE -- Now here after the entire foreign ministry, National Security Advisor (wonder whether this was in his charter)..With no one to look after the functioning of rest of the country. Our Mr Tip Top has been virtually on a paid holiday for last four and a half years. Indians are awake and Mr Tip Top is sleeping in his cosy bed -- Ready to apply Brylcream in his head to keep it glued and slippery -- so that no criticism sticks on him

Hello, there's another blast. Who is responsible for this now? A series of masterminds are either dead or behind bars. Now who has done it? A near-tragedy was averted when mikes again hovered around the face of Mr Tip Top but a last minute luck pushed him inside the car as 'Pranab Da' was waiting for him. But poor Tip Top must be criticising his luck as according to Hindu calender "Pitrapaksh" (Shrads), a religious ceremony in memory of those dead in the family. This fortnight is termed as most inauspicious. Well, I don't believe in this but now I think its true as the fortnight has proved the most inauspicious for Mr Tip Top. Two blasts, one encounter (already under public scrutiny). What else does he need? A failed MP, a failed Home Minister and a failed human too. I feel like nominating him to wonder's of world. After all he is an ORTHOPEDIC WONDER. A person without a spine. Thankfully he did not open his mouth today nor his other aides, who must be busy gaining experience out of this blast too....

I am confused..Who is the mastermind? Mastermind of the serial blasts. Should we believe Gujarat Police, Delhi Police or now Mumbai Police. Every second day, one police force or the other is holding a press conference and claiming that they have cracked one case or the other. The hero of Gujarat Police was Abu Bashar, who may have been modelling for the hunger struck Somalian nationals before being picked up. The entire wheel revolved around Abu Bashar. Suddenly TV reporters even dug out his great grandfather from the grave least to mention his dangerous links. A mere look of Abu Bashar may question one's own power of thinking that can he be the mastermind. He planned this, he did that, he lived here, he took shower here, he was married here....blah blah blah went on the TV channels (Thank God they did not show where and how he took his daily bath). The Gujarat Police said SIMI and Indian Mujahideen (IM) were one and the same thing. And the drama continued for sometime till the unfortunate blasts in the national capital that shook the base of the Centre. Suddenly I am remembered of a mythological character from Ramayana -- Kumbhkaran -- Our Government also woke up in a similar fashion and started looking for results. Till a week later, a puzzle came with a sudden encounter in crowded Jamia Nagar in which two militants were killed and a poor Inspector of Special Cell (God Bless his soul) Mohan Chand Sharma lost his life. The dead included Atif...ATIF....and suddenly Atif was responsible for everything. Delhi, UP, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and God knows what all. The age was on his side otherwise there were some previous unresolved blasts of 1990's could have been attributed to him too. Anyways Atif has been ruling the terror network after his death. Only God, Atif and Delhi Police know truth. Oops! I forgot to mention that the "Indian Mujahideen dish" had now new ingredients -- SIMI, IM and Lashker-e-Taiba -- well this theory even left the great strategist within the Intelligence agencies zapped as they never knew this. It was all along believed that Indian Mujahideen was nothing but a shadow name of a combine of Lashker and SIMI. Oh God, I forgot about Mohammed Usman Qureshi alias Tauqeer... Tauqeer.. While the dust was settling around, Mumbai Police had a surprise.. Surprise surprise, Indian Mujahideen has born finally and to shut every one's mouth, the Indian Mujahideen has born across the border -- somewhere in Karachi with some Amir Raza.... Amir Raza... yes now, this is the new mastermind? Wonder why there's no coordination within our own police forces to have a common reply. These efforts only highlight one fact...Lack of coordination in fight against terror within our own forces. We are the same people who saw a wonderful investigations into the IC-814 Hijacking, Parliament attack case...Then why are we time and again failing nowadays. Whats going wrong??? Has there been a brain drain among the intelligence gathering apparatus? These questions can be termed as a figment of imagination but may be tomorrow these questions will attain some priority and have some answers.

Trying hard to over come the controversy of being a serial dress changer, Mr Tip Top finds himself in yet another controversy. Its Mr Modi, who has spilled the beans this time when he went public with the details of a one-to-one meeting he had with him prior to Delhi blasts. A baffled Modi, whose credentials as an administrator remain undoubtedly high, could not hold himself back in making public his conversation with Mr Tip Top. On a serious note, he was apprising him intelligence inputs but Mr Tip Top was getting late for LUNCH.
Wonder how he feels hungry after seeing so much of devastation. His jokers next day came out with a strong denial that he had never said anything about lunch butone only wonders why should Modi lie. At least for the first time the we Indians do believe that Modi is saying the truth. Because this can always be expected from Mr Tip Top. I hope he is sleeping peacefully in his cozy bed waiting to waste another day at his office tomorrow.

Dear readers, this week has been turbulent for Indians when terror groups have exhibited that they can strike at their will as and whenever they feel and the more bad news was that Mr Tip Top was continuing despite opposition from within the ruling government. A systematic decay of the office of Home Minister has been seen. I was talking to an old man whose words shook me from within. Over the years there has been a constant decay oxidization of the iron (left by iron man of India) and finally it has gained so much of rust that it needs to be changed. Wonder whether Mr Tip Top can sleep properly after knowing that he has been a big a disaster in all spheres. Bureaucrats attending his meetings, those I know personally, virtually come out disgusted. Through this blog I pay tribute to all those Indian's whose wishes and aspirations for change of Mr Tip Top did not come true. Oops! Mr Tip Top loves to talk in percentages and I know 99.9 per cent wished that he should go. But dont loose heart my fellow countrymen, we shall overcome one day, deep in my heart, I do believe....that we shall over come one day...
