Pakistan mourns young genius Arfa Karim's demise

LAHORE: In what could simply be described as an enormous loss for Pakistan, Arfa Karim, the world's youngest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Saturday night, lost the battle of life after remaining admitted here at Combined Military Hospital for 26 days, Geo News reported.

Arfa Karim was only sixteen years old.

Her funeral prayers will be offered on Sunday at 10 AM in Cantt area.

Arfa Karim remained in intensive care at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) after suffering an epileptic seizure and cardiac arrest a few weeks ago. After battling for life for 26 days, one of Pakistan's brightest brains left this world for good.

Arfa's father Colonel (Retd) Amjad Karim Randhawa, while takling to Geo News, said that, she had gone nowhere; she was still alive for her cause was alive. Going forward, Col Randhawa vowed to materialize her dreams.

To a question, he said that Arfa got the best of the medical treatments available, adding he was satisfied with it.

Born in 1995, Arfa Karim got the honor of World’s Youngest Microsoft Certified Professional when she was only 9 years old in 2004. Bill Gates, the Chairman of Microsoft, invited Arfa to visit the Microsoft Headquarters in the USA in the age of 10 only.

Later, in August 2005, Arfa was also honored by the Pakistan Government for the Fatima Jinnah Gold Medal in the field of Science and Technology which she received from then Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. She was also honored with Salaam Pakistan Youth Award in 2005 which has been set up by Pakistan’s only Nobel laureate Dr Abdul Salam. Moreover, Arfa has won the Presidential Award for Pride of Performance.

Arfa represented her country Pakistan on a variety of international fora. She was also included as the honorable guest by IT Professionals of Dubai for two weeks stay in Dubai. During that trip, Arfa was awarded by a number of medals and awards from various tech societies and computer companies working in Dubai.

Amazingly, she was certified for flying a plane at a flying club in Dubai at the age of 10.

Arfa also participated in Microsoft keynote session in the Tech-Ed Developers Conference held in Barcelona, in 2006. The theme of the conference was “Get ahead of the game” and Arfa was in fact a great example of being ahead of the game.

FAISALABAD: In 2004, Arfa Karim Randhawa was the youngest ever Microsoft certified professional in the world. Born in 1995, she received the prestigious title at the age of nine.

On December 22, Aarifa was admitted to Lahore's CMH hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. On Thursday, doctors said there is no hope for her survival, and that her life support could be switched off 'at any time'.
Aarifa's father, Lt Col (Retd) Amjad Karim Randhawa told The Express Tribune that she had suffered an epileptic attack, which caused severe brain and heart damage. Randhawa said "only a miracle will allow my brilliant, genius daughter to live now".

After the news of Aarifa's condition emerged, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice and offered economic support to the family, but they have refused to take the money.
When Aarifa, now 16, was given the title of a Microsoft professional as a young child, she visited the company's headquarters in the US. When she met Bill Gates himself, she had two questions: Why weren't children allowed to work for Microsoft, and why such few women worked for the organisation.
Her love for technology, however, started long before she was recognised internationally. After discovering computers for the first time at the age of five, she pestered her father for a personal computer, and after that there was no looking back.

Aarifa's father recalled the year in which his daughter passed the test which enabled her to be declared the youngest professional certified by Microsoft in the world. "When she passed the test at age nine, everyone thought the result was wrong," he reminisced. She wanted to make software just like Bill Gates, he added. She would say that she wanted to work for children and poor people.
Proudly, he said she came from a 'low-profile' family, but she would always say she wanted to study all over the world and then come back to help the people in her village. Her dreams were never for herself alone.
Aarifa's achievements go far beyond recognition from Microsoft alone. The 16-year-old, a student of Lahore Grammar School's Paragon campus, has represented Pakistan in various international forums. In 2005, the child prodigy received the Fatimah Jinnah Gold Medal from the government as well as the Salaam Pakistan Youth Award. In addition, she has received the president's award for Pride of Performance, medals from IT professionals around the world, and also became a brand ambassador for PTCL in 2010.
Her talents however, are versatile. Besides excelling in the field of science and technology, Aarifa also flew a plane at the age of 10.

Aarifa's life hangs in the balance, and while most have given up hope, her father says: "I am praying and I want everyone to pray for her".

ISLAMABAD - The PML-N leader Makhdoom Javed Hashmi is all set to join Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Reliable sources informed Online that all formalities have been duly fulfilled for a formal announcement within next few days. Makhdoom Javed Hashmi has been reported to be quite agitated over being constantly ignored/bypassed/sidetracked, and is known to have publicly criticided PML-N’s leadership in meetings.

On April 12 2004, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for inciting mutiny in the army, forgery and defamation, by circulating a letter written by military officers calling for an investigation into alleged corruption in the armed forces and criticising President Pervez Musharraf and his relationship with US President George W Bush.

Why Your Facebook account will be disabled

This is what happening with the people who are using facebook all around the world: facebook disables the accounts of users on facebook social network who’s submissions are suspicious. Usually as it sounds, suspicious, often means just using the facebook too much. Usually they are warning people and gives them the second chance to change themselves and sometimes they just terminate the account suddenly and permanently. Most of time they turn back the disabled accounts, automatically after a cool down or after sending them the humble request to the facebook authorities. But sometimes they just ban the account and forget it.

Facebook has not sharply outlined about what bad behavior looks like that leads for getting account disabled, and this is the most important reason which makes people confused, angry or desperate when they gets the message Account Disabled. I have tried to list the most common reasons on “why the facebook accounts are disabled?” to help people avoiding their accounts to be disabled by facebook. Remember, this list is not surely complete and as the policies will be keeping changing according to the time, we will have to live with a bit uncertainty when using Facebook.

Here are the reasons that will get you kicked off facebook:

• You didn’t use your real name
Don’t try to use a nickname (or initials)in lieu of the name on your birth certificate, because Facebook will find you and spit you out.

• You joined too many groups
Remember that the maximum limit is 200 groups per user. More than that just looks desperate, don’t you think?

• You posted too many messages on a wall or in a group
Even one of my close friend had his account disabled–in his case for “excessive evangelism.”

• You posted in too many groups, too many user’s walls
You may be axed for being too verbose in too many places. That’s what spammers do, silly. On Facebook it is better–or at least safer–to be seen than heard.

• You friended too many people
Not so long ago this was a prime cause of disabled accounts, but Facebook has instituted a maximum of 5000 friends that should protect you from yourself.

• Your school/organization affiliation is doubtful
The overlords are sometimes not very trusting, and they may accuse you of not graduating from Harvard (or Plum Senior High School). The impertinence! Better have your diploma ready.

• You’re poking too many people
We’ve heard this from multiple sources, and it’s easy enough to avoid. Save the pokes for people you *really* like, as mum always said. But beware the odd FB app that pokes on your behalf.

• For advertising your app on wall posts
The line between spam and self-promotion is a thin one, but let it be known that pimping your shiny new Facebook app is definitely considered SPAM.

• Using duplicate text in multiple messages
Some people paste a generic welcome message into friend requests to save time. DON’T DO THIS! It makes you look like a spammer. (Ironically, pro spammers are probably randomizing their messages to avoid this trap)

• You are a cow, dog, or library
Being a real person is not enough, you must be a homo sapien. Accounts have been deleted for cows, dogs and libraries.

• You are under eighteen years old
According to one report a user’s account was suspended when they suspected her of being under 18. She was required to enter a work email address to prove her maturity, at which point her account was reinstated. [note: other users have pointed out that being under 18 is fine if you're part of a High School group, though underage home schoolers have been told to bugger off]

• You wrote offensive content
Reports of “sudden death” on accounts have been reported by users who were told they had posted offensive content, but were not provided details of the offense.

• You scraped information off Facebook
They have a zero tolerance policy for page scraping (i.e. pulling content off their web pages via a script). Unfortunately, they don’t have a reliable way of proving it’s you who’s doing the scraping (IP matching is probably as good as they can get), so you may find this a difficult charge to defend yourself against.

Finally, you may be disabled for no clear reason at all. One Australian member reported this staggering experience:

“I was blocked for a little while because I was ‘misusing certain features of the site’ Naturally I closely examined their conditions of use etc for some insight as to what I must have done wrong. I couldn’t for the life of me find anything…

“Upon request for clarification I was told that they were not at liberty to divulge which features or of course any thresholds of use. Then they warned me not to do it again or I would be banned permanently without recourse to reinstatement.”

You have been warned. Remember that the hand of justice is swift and merciless.

Everything old is new again for one Japanese manufacturer, which has unveiled an electronic version of a rickshaw.

The "Meguru" is a three-wheeled, three-seat compact vehicle whose single lithium-ion battery allows for a maximum speed and range of 40 kilometers (25 miles) per hour, although the number of batteries could be increased for a longer ride.

"This is a true environmentally friendly car," said Nobuyuki Ogura, the chief executive officer of Yodogawa Group, which built the vehicle in cooperation with three other small companies in western Japan.

"Instead of an air-conditioner, it comes with a pinwheel, and we are also thinking of adding a wind chime because it gives a refreshing sound to cool you down without the need of electricity," he told Reuters Television. "It doesn't have a heater, but it's equipped with blankets to keep you warm in the winter."

A regular driver's license is required to take the vehicle on the road, but car registration is unnecessary. Devised as part of a project to revitalise small businesses facing economic hardship, the vehicle - which is 2.5 meters (8 ft 2 in) long, 1.2 meters (3 ft 11 in) wide and 1.6 meters (5 ft 3 in) tall - also showcases traditional Japanese crafts.

The body is coated in red lacquer, the floor is filled with recycled bamboo, and the retractable "window" has been carefully crafted in the shape of a Japanese fan using Japanese "washi" paper. All were made by craftsmen in western Japan. The company says it is selling the vehicle for around one million yen ($12,180) while assessing a business plan for mass production.

Even disposing of the car after its usefulness has passed poses no problems. "We've used all-natural materials, so if you ever decide to get rid of the car, simply bury it in the ground," Ogura said.

Here are 12 fantastic tiny pieces of art from a three-dimensional bull the size of a red blood cell create by Japanese Engineers to the Incredible Hulk in the pin of a needle!

"Little People" is a fantastic street art project by artist Slinkachu, where photos are taken of tiny figures that are placed in public locations throughout London. This one is called "Overpowered."

Willard Wigan is the creator of some of the world's smallest sculptures. The above scene is situated inside a sewing needle, it's a tribute to the Obama Family. Wigan takes months to complete a piece and works between heartbeats to avoid hand tremors. He uses a tiny surgical blade to carve his figures out of gold and grains of sand which are then mounted on pinheads.

Toothpick artist Steven Backman has carved this miniature replica of San Francisco's landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge. Measuring 1 7/8”(L) x 1/8”(W) x 3/4”(H), it was sculpted from one single toothpick and glue.

Online beauty site, FeelUnique commissioned artist Willard Wigan to create the world's first ever lipstick sculptures – of Brad and Angelina! The lippies, measuring 4mm by 9mm took over 50 hours to sculpt and will be auctioned off on the FeelUnique site, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Campaign.

Who says you can't put a camel through the eye of a needle? Russian miniaturist Nikolai Aldunin has fit seven through this one. The artist works between the beats of his heart, in order to keep his hands perfectly still. He creates works of art so tiny that a microscope is needed to see them.

A team of Japanese engineers created the smallest statue ever. A three-dimensional bull the size of a red blood cell has been etched in plastic by engineers at Osaka University in Japan. Measuring only 10 by 7 micrometers -- one micrometer is one-thousandth of a millimeter -- the bull is the smallest truly three-dimensional sculpture ever created.

This pin-head sized replica of the Lloyd's of London building, by Willard Wigan, has been sold for £94,000 at auction. The work, which took four months to be created using white gold and platinum, is no larger than a granule of sugar and must be viewed through a microscope.

Also by artist Steven Backman, this is a miniature replica of the Empire State Building.

Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo diligently carved hundreds of miniature ice figures as part of a recent installation for WWF, only to watch them slowly melt in the heat of the day. As the sun beat down on the tiny sculptures they stooped and slumped, lending an ephemeral quality to the already very cool installation.

Flying fish live in all of the oceans, particularly in tropical and warm subtropical waters. Their most striking feature is their pectoral fins, which are unusually large, and enable the fish to hide and escape from predators by leaping out of the water, taking short gliding flights through air just above the water's surface. Their glides are typically around 50 metres (160 ft).To glide upward out of the water, a flying fish moves its tail up to 70 times per second. It then spreads its pectoral fins and tilts them slightly upward to provide lift. At the end of a glide, it folds its pectoral fins to reenter the sea, or drops its tail into the water to push against the water to lift itself for another glide, possibly changing direction...

Bike chain sculptures

Korean artist Seo Young Deok had his first solo exhibition called “Dystopia” in Seoul. his sculptures are made entirely of upcycled materials – bike chains to be more specific. he used welded metal chains to link the human figures together piece by piece. his work is very much a statement about the way many people live their lives – robot and machine like, just going through the motions. his figures are hollow and purposefully unfinished to express the “incomplete nature of modern day humans.”

his work has very dark undertones, and it comes out through his sculptures. Dystopia is very much a comment on the disconnected and fragmented world we live in – his goal was to highlight the individual struggle we all go through. even the materials he uses (industrial materials and bike chains) point out our reliance on the manufactured world. many of the human figures are broken to represent our detachment from each other, and can represent the detachment from one’s self.

“I sensed the modern day people’s involuntary life in the repetitive movement of a chain and felt the standardization and anonymousness in the chain made of the same pattern. I wanted to add a new vitality and life by adding the second meaning to the original function of a chain while destroying its original functionality as a part of a machine.”

the sculptures are incredible, and so realistic. when i first looked at them, i though of decay and rot. pretty dark subject matter but it is cool to see a different type of upcycled art that addresses these kind of solemn issues.

Veena Malik who is soon to commence her reality show, Veena ka Swayamvar on Imagine TV has been the talk of the town ever since her nude pictures for a magazine went viral. While the actor denies stripping for the picture, the magazine claims that it was Veena Malik who pursued the magazine for a month and asserted on doing a bold photoshoot. The FHM magazine responded to Veena’s lawsuit by suing the actor for Rs. 25 crore. The magazine stated that the photos were indeed real and no image has been morphed. In their eleven page notice, the Magazine stated, “Your client permitted our clients for her photo as well as video shoots which were carried out by our clients with the consent and authority of your client. It would be pertinent to mention herein that your client pursued FHM magazine via photographer Vishal Saxena in October 2011 for a shoot. Your client wanted to do a sexy, bold and in-your-face shoot and to express intent for the same she also sent through Saxena pictures of her in bikinis etc, to show that she was in good shape for a shoot for FHM. After pursuing FHM for close to a month, on November 15th your client was sent a set of photographs for references through Vishal Saxena via e-mail and was explained the complete concept of the shoot. After receiving and understanding the concept of the shoot, on November 19, 2011, your client reverted directly to Sh. Kabeer Sharma through an e-mail with title “Love the Idea” saying she “likes the idea and concept very much and was comfortable to shoot” on November 23, 2011.” They further claimed that Veena was super excited during the shoot, so much so that sometimes the team had to tell her to tone down her exposure keeping in mind Indian censorship laws.

The magazine also addressed on the ISI mark tattooed on Veena’s arm in their notice. “Your client was very much eager, excited and willing to wear the tattoo of ISI. Your client was not only well aware of the concept; she even proactively took part in the execution of the shot. Your client told to Priyanka Palkar, in presence of Sh. Kabeer Sharma, to make the ‘ISI’ marking on her shoulder “bolder and bigger” so that it could be “seen properly”. In her notice Veena had claimed that the magazine never showed her the cover picture before publishing it. They countered her claim stating that the actor had replied in a mail passed on November 29 that she is looking forward to the cover, which clearly indicates that she had seen the cover prior to its release. Apparently, this is not the first time Veena Malik has gone topless. Topless pictures of the actor’s earlier photoshoots have been found on the web. Like we said earlier, wethink this is just a publicity stunt for the actor’s new reality show. Nothing more or less!

Kinnaird College for Women Lahore mourns student shot outside campus

LAHORE October 17, 2011- Samer Wasti student of Kinnaird College (KC) was murdered by her alleged lover Shams in front of the college. After murdering the girl, the killer shot himself on the spot.

Samer was a second year student in ICS discipline. The incident took place today (Monday) when she was crossing an overhead bridge in front of the campus on Jail Road. Other students were also present at over head bridge when Shams fired three bullets which killed the girl. After killing the girl, Shams committed suicide by shooting himself.

Sad situation was observed inside KC as faculty and students were lamenting on the death of the student.

In a bloodcurdling incident, desperate and disheartened 23-years-old boy, first killed his love (a 17-years-old girl, student of 2nd year at Kinnaird College) and later ended his life by shooting himself in his head at over head bridge, especially constructed for Kinnaird College (KC) students located on Jail Road on Monday afternoon.

The tragic ending of the failed love story that stated some two years ago left Lahorities aggrieved while the students of KC as shell shocked.Bullet shots from the desperate boy have also injured a passer by named Bashir. The two lovebirds died on the spot while the injured was rushed to Services Hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.It was about 2:25 pm when students of KC were standing at and around the entry exit gate of the KC waiting for their vehicles to return to their home. It was a kind of hustling-bustling situation out the KC when suddenly the crowed including girls, their relatives, their drivers, staffers of KC and locals of the area started running here and there after hearing four bullet shots which created panic in the area. The situation becomes tenser when students found two youngsters, a girl and a boy, lying in a pool of blood on the floor of over head bridge.Hues and cries were observed among the KCites (students) while the traffic on Jail Road came to a halt. A stampede was also witnessed at Jail Road which created traffic mess for over one hour. A passer-by informed police after which a police team headed by ASP Racecourse Circle Riffat Bukari reached the scene.The police team collected forensic evidence from the crime scene, recovered murder-weapon, cell phones and other belongings of the girl and the boy who later were identified as Samar Wasti and Shamas-ul-Alam.Samar Wasti was a resident of Faisalabad who was residing here maternal aunt’s place in Shahdara Area and Shams-ul-Alam was a resident of Chungi Amr Sadhu with a permanent address of Jinnah Colony Sargodha and a temporary address of Rawalpindi mentioned on his Identity Card.Police removed the bodies to Racecourse police station for further search of their clothes which were finally removed the bodies to City morgue for autopsy.The police team also recorded the statements of eyewitnesses and students at crime scene as well.Eyewitness injured victim Bashir said that he was on his way to home on a motorbike. “As I reached near overhead bridge on Jail Road in front of Kinnaird College, I heard four bullet shots, one of which injured me as well”, he added.ASP Racecourse Circle Riffat Bukhari told the reporters at crime scene that the circumstantial evidences suggest that the accused boy was chasing the girl as she came out of the exit gate of Kinnaird College at around 2:30 p.m. She added that seemingly both lovebirds had exchanged few words with each other but over the refusal of girl to get married with him, the accused boy whipped out a 30-bore pistol and opened two straight fires at her left temple and neck. As a result, she sustained serious bullet wounds and died on the spot. Without wasting anytime, the accused boy shot a bullet in his own temple and ended his life over love tragedy.Sub-inspector Bashiran Bibi of Women Racecourse police station told this correspondent that the victim girl was living with her aunt in Shahdra while she belonged to Faisalabad. She further told that the accused boy belonged to Mozang Chungi. A case No 71/11 has been registered under sections 302 and 324 of PPC against the accused boy.The victim girl’s parents, who had reached Women Racecourse Police Station from Faisalabad after knowing about the incident, told the police that accused boy was teasing their daughter for the last two months after which Samar had also changed SIM of her cell phone. However, the boy chased their daughter on Monday and asked her to talk to her parents for marriage proposal. The girl’s parents requested the boy not to tease her and close this chapter. After which the girl’s father heard three bullet shots and the guy said the chapter has been closed. The girl’s father further told the police that they tried to contact their daughter again but received no response.Sarwaj Wasti, brother of deceased’s Samar Wasti, while talking to his relatives at City Morgue mentioned that Samar was living here with her maternal aunt. ‘Thor 2’: Chris Hemsworth says Patty Jenkins has done her homework

“Thor” star Chris Hemsworth is sad to see director Kenneth Branagh leave Asgard, but he said the filmmaker’s rumored replacement, Patty Jenkins, is up to the cosmic task she would inherit.

“She has a great take on the story and a solid grasp on that kind of universe,” the Aussie actor said Wednesday on the set of “Snow White and the Huntsman” in eastern Wales.

Hemsworth, who plays the Huntsman in the ambitious fantasy film, was filming horseback scenes on a beach for a battle sequence against Ravenna, played by Charlize Theron — who just happened to win an Oscar in the Jenkins-directed 2003 film “Monster.” Jenkins (who also directed the acclaimed pilot episode of AMC’s “The Killing” ) isn’t completely locked in for the Marvel Studios sequel but has confirmed that she is in advanced talks to pick up where Branagh left off. The first “Thor” film pulled in more than $449 million in worldwide box office and the sequel is scheduled for July 2013.

“Snow White and the Huntsman,” directed by Rupert Sanders, wraps in December, and early next year Hemsworth will be working on Ron Howard’s “Rush.” The actor will also (finally) be seen next year in the revived and retooled “Red Dawn” remake as well as “The Avengers,” the Joss Whedon film that unites all the Hollywood heroes of the Marvel Universe.

The character of Thor was a childhood passion for Branagh; does Jenkins have a similar connection to the realm on the far side of the Rainbow Bridge? Hemsworth said in his meeting with Jenkins she seemed like a filmmaker worthy of picking up the franchise’s cinematic hammer.

NADRA Begins Revalidation of Computerized Arms Licences

The National Database & Registration Authority (Nadra) has started the revalidation process of arms licences issued by the Ministry of Interior.

Nadra Deputy Chairman Tariq Malik said that the process will provide transparency and authenticity of arms licence and proper data will be available with the Ministry of Interior. He said Nadra will process arms licences on behalf of Ministry of Interior; however the approval of each arms license application is the sole discretion of the ministry. Nadra will only process those applications which have the approval of the ministry.

He said original CNICs and original licences (along with photocopies) are pre-requisite for revalidation along with application form available at Nadra Centres and Ministry of Interior website. Nadra would verify the CNICs from its database to check the genuineness of an applicant while the applicant s credentials would also be checked by different law enforcement agencies. Card Renewal fee of Rs1100 for PB (Prohibited Bore) licence and Rs600 for NPB (Non Prohibited Bore) licence will be charged along with any payable in respect of Government license renewal fee dues. The original booklet will be retained by Nadra.

All original booklets will be forwarded by Nadra to the Ministry of Interior for post verification. He said that Nadra has designated 158 centres across the country where a separate counter in each designated centre has been established to receive the applications regarding the renewal of arms licences.

He shared the figures that 13 NADRA Registration Centres (NRCs) in Multan, 30 NRCs in Quetta, 14 NRCs in Lahore, 10 NRCs in Sargodha, 32 NRCs Peshawar, 24 NRCs in Islamabad, 11 NRCs in Hyderabad, 10 NRCs in Sukkur, 13 NRCs in Karachi and one centre at Sector G-10 Islamabad for Arms License Project Site will facilitate the applicants for the Arm Licences.

He said Govt. has extended deadline from August 31, 2011 to September 30, 2011, this deadline encompasses all Pakistan for renewal of arms licences specifically issued by the Ministry of Interior. However, this project does not cater for computerisation of manual Arms Licenses issued by the provincial governments. The above arrangements will facilitate all the arms license holders.

He said whole exercise of revalidation and issuance of arms licence would help government to check illegal weapons in the country while record of legal arms will be updated on district-wise which will be helpful for law enforcement agencies.

As I mentioned last week, on Thursday night, Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston (JustJen) went to a charity auction of artwork donated to benefit Haiti. As it turns out, it was actually a double-date for JustJen, as they seemed to spend the evening with Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor. Ben and Jennifer know each other fromAlong Came Polly - and Ben and Justin know each other from Tropic Thunder. Basically, everybody has been friends for years. So, this is what went down at the auction: Justin Theroux “bought” Jennifer a piece of art that she wanted. Only he didn’t buy anything. He just made a huge bid on a (probably already over-valued) painting, and Jennifer had to pay. But here’s how that story gets twisted into “Justin is such a gentleman, he bid on a painting for his lady!”

He bids, she buys! Jennifer Aniston was the winning buyer at Christie’s glitzy “Artists for Haiti” auction in NYC on Thursday — where beau Justin Theroux did the bidding on her behalf.

Actor-screenwriter Theroux, 40, helped his love, 42, snag American artist Glenn Ligon’s “Stranger #44,” an abstract 2011 work of oil, charcoal and graphite on canvas that seems to match his downtown hipster tastes.

At the auction, “Stranger #44″ (pictured with artist Glenn Ligon and Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem) was estimated at $150,000 to $200,000.

But Aniston helped shatter the record for sales of Ligon’s work, spending a whopping $450,000 on the 72″ by 60″ painting, an Artists for Haiti rep confirms to Us.

Reports Artinfo.com: “Aniston, who was in the room, clapped enthusiastically after [Theroux's] winning bid.”

Benefiting health and education initiatives for Haiti, The “Artists for Haiti” auction — artists donated their works for the cause — was co-organized by Ben Stiller, and raised $13,662,000.

After the auction, Stiller, 40, and his wife Christine Taylor hung out with Theroux and Aniston for a late dinner at Il Cantinori. “They seemed to be having a lot of fun with Ben and his wife, like old friends,” a witness said. “Ben paid for everyone,” the witness adds.

Stiller co-starred in Along Came Polly with Aniston and co-wrote Tropic Thunder with Theroux.

I guess we should assume that Jennifer really wanted this piece of art, and that she was simply too much of a poor little VICTIM to bid on it herself? Because I imagine the fun of bidding on a piece of art is really stressful and victim-making, and that’s why Justin had to ride in on his stead and raise his hand over and over for the painting, like a gentleman? I don’t even know. Maybe she bought it for him, and she just let her boy-toy pick out the piece that he wanted and she got it for him like an attentive sugar-mama? I’m not trying to say Justin isn’t successful - he is. He does very well for himself as a character actor and screenwriter. But I doubt he has $450K to blow on a piece of art, which is why Aniston was there to purchase it. I guess what I’m saying is… he must be great in bed.

Boeing delivers its first 787 jet on Sunday. It's been a long time coming.

The new jet, which was supposed to be flying passengers three years ago, has been delayed by production and design problems. But now it's here, and airlines expect it to offer travelers much more comfort, open up new routes and provide significant fuel savings.

The first one goes to Japan's All Nippon Airways, which has been printing the 787 logo and "We Fly 1st" on its business cards for years.

Airlines love the jet, which Boeing calls the Dreamliner. They've ordered more than 800, well above levels for previous new jets.

"A lot of carriers are betting that this is going to be a winner," says George Hamlin, president of Hamlin Transportation Consulting in Fairfax, Va.

Instead of the usual aluminum skin, most of the 787 is covered in carbon fiber, basically a high-tech plastic that is strong but lightweight. Military planes and portions of other jetliners have used that material for years, but this is the first time so much has been used on an airliner.

The new material brings improvements that passengers should notice.

Its strength allows windows to be bigger and higher, so passengers don't have to hunch over to see the horizon. Electronic dimming replaces pull-down shades. That should mean you'll no longer be blinded when the guy next to you falls asleep with the shade up.

Finally, the cabin is pressurized to the equivalent of 6,000 feet, instead of the usual 8,000 feet. That means air pressure will be closer to what passengers are used to on the ground. And without corrosion-prone aluminum skin, the humidity can be kept higher. Those two changes should reduce dry noses and throats.

All Nippon plans to begin flying the 787 from Tokyo to Okayama-Hiroshima on Nov. 11. The first international route will be Tokyo to Frankfurt starting in January.

The first U.S. customer is United Continental Holdings Inc., which will get its first 787s next year and plans to fly them between Houston and Auckland, New Zealand, and Houston and Lagos, Nigeria.

Those are good examples of "thin routes" that airlines say the 787 will be good for -- routes for which there is regular demand that won't fill a larger plane. The 787's size, fuel efficiency and long range should allow airlines to turn a profit on those routes.

The jet will be as much as 20 percent more fuel-efficient than planes it replaces. Its efficiency was a nice perk when Boeing first proposed the 787 in its current form in 2003. Now it's essential for airlines dealing with high fuel costs.

Building an all-new plane like the 787 is a massive undertaking. Delays stacked up. Boeing was hit with an eight-week strike in 2008. It had to reinforce the spot where the 787's wings meet the fuselage. In November, the company had to delay the plane further after an electrical fire forced a landing during a test flight.

Boeing expects to deliver a combined 25 to 30 of the 787s and new 747-8 this year. To meet the high demand. Boeing has set an ambitious goal of building 10 per month by the end of 2013. No one has ever made a large plane that fast.

Richard Aboulafia, an aerospace analyst at the Teal Group, thinks Boeing will miss that goal because the company hasn't smoothed out its production process fully.

It's also not clear when the 787 will make money. Boeing already took a $2.5 billion charge in 2009 on the program, and it owes additional money to customers for the late deliveries. Boeing executives have said they will announce when the jet will be profitable after the first one is delivered.

The 787 list price runs between $185 million and $218 million. Discounts on new jets are common, though. Aboulafia says it's not clear how steep the discounts offered by Boeing were to lock in all the orders.

Boeing rival Airbus hopes to soon launch its new A350, also made with a significant amount of carbon composites. A successful 787 will put pressure on Airbus to meet its fuel-efficiency goals, and to deliver the plane on time.

They are found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific islands.

The reticulated python of Southeast Asia is among the largest snakes, reaching a length of 10 m (33 ft). Other well-known pythons are the Indian python, a favorite of snake handlers; African rock python; ball or royal python of equatorial Africa, which curls into a ball and can be rolled on the ground.

Diamond snake or Carpet snake, also diamond python, common name for a large constricting snake found in Australia and New Guinea. It is named for diamond-shaped markings of yellow and black on the back and abdomen.

Pythons are constrictors, and feed on birds and small mammals, killing them by literally squeezing them to death. They coil themselves up around their prey, tighten, but merely squeeze hard enough to stop the prey's breathing and/or blood circulation. Large pythons usually would eat something about the size of a house cat, but 100 pound wild boar are eaten as well. They swallow their prey whole, and take several days to fully digest it.

Prey is killed by a process known as constriction; after an animal has been grasped to restrain it, a number of coils are hastily wrapped around it. Then, by applying and maintaining sufficient pressure to prevent it from inhaling, the prey eventually succumbs due to asphyxiation. It has recently been suggested that the pressures produced during constriction cause cardiac arrest by interfering with blood flow,^[4] but this hypothesis has not yet been confirmed.

Larger specimens usually eat animals about the size of a house cat, but larger food items are known: some large Asian species have been known to take down adult deer, and the African rock python, Python sebae, has been known to eat antelope. Prey is swallowed whole, and may take anywhere from several days or even weeks to fully digest.

Contrary to popular belief, even the larger species, such as the reticulated python, P. reticulatus, do not crush their prey to death; in fact, prey is not even noticeably deformed before it is swallowed. The speed with which the coils are applied is impressive and the force they exert may be significant, but death is caused by suffocation, with the victim not being able to move its ribs to breathe while it is being constricted
