What a Trip

Hello my International Friends,

I am so sorry that I have not written in a few weeks. I have been super busy with studying and homework. How are all of you doing? I hope that all the AFS students who may be reading this blog are all enjoying the second half of their stay! Enjoy it guys, because it goes really fast after you reach April. Trust me.

So, this post is going to be a long one! **Stay tuned for all my pictures that I took whilst on my mini trip to Washington, D.C. I have such an awesome time walking around the city with my family. We visited almost every monument. And we did it all by foot. Safe to say that I had quite a few blisters on my feet by the end of the weekend.

We spent 4 and a half days in D.C and that wasn't nearly enough time to fully experience all that it had to offer. I really can see myself studying in a city like this. It's international, cosmopolitan, and you can really feel a certain hum in the air. At the same time, it's also very clean, and the people are extremely nice. Now, being from the Midwest, I am used to everyone being polite on the streets. I have heard the rumors about people on the east coast not being quite so personable; however, in Washington, D.C that was not the case. Perhaps it is because of the fact that it is full of diverse people with different customs from around the world that everyone behaves to decently toward one another. Perhaps they are just happy to live in such a great city. Either way, I enjoyed my time there. The weather was sunny and it wasn't too cold. In addition, I never had a bad meal.

While I was there, I also had some business to which I needed to attend. Touring Colleges! I visited George Washington University, American University, and Georgetown University. Each university had their own atmosphere and special aspects that separated each one of them. George Washington has two campuses, one located in downtown D.C (Foggy Bottom) and another farther away from the city, past Georgetown called Mount Vernon. American University, is located on top of a hill right up the road from the Embassy lane. American was more enclosed and separated from the hustle and bustle of the city; however it is a well organized campus and easy to navigate. Georgetown was the last college we visited. It was a gusty, sunny, yet crisp, winter day when we made our way up to campus. Georgetown is truly another world. Quaint town houses line the colonial inspired blocks. There are tons of shops and restaurants. Not to mention, the University buildings are absolutely gorgeous. What an institution!

In all it was a lovely weekend to explore the city and visit a few Smithsonian Museums. We got completely lost a few times in the subway, and also above ground. I was so grateful to be able to visit my nation's capital and appreciate my nation's history.

Thanks for reading! And I will also be taking another small trip up to the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) to visit St. Thomas University. I have a special connection with this area because my mom is from St. Paul, or more specifically, Whitebear. Should be great! Stories and Pictures to come.

Hola a todos mis amigos internacionales,

Siento por no haber escrito una entrata por mucho tiempo. He estado muy agobiada con mis estudios y tal. Como vais? Espero que todos los estudiantes intercambios de AFS estén disfrutando estos últimos meses de sus estancias. Después de abril, todo va a un ritmo muy rápido.

Esta entrada es algo diferente porque es el primero viaje en que he embarcado desde que me había vuelto de España. **No perdáis las fotos abajo! Las he tomado en Washington, D.C mientras mi pequño viaje. Me lo he pasado genial! Mi familia y yo caminabamos por todos lados en la ciudad. Visitamos los monumentos, museos, y tres universidades. Vimos La Casa Blanca, y hemos cenado en unos restaurantes deliciosos.

Hemos estado allí por 4 y media días y aún yo quería quedar para más tiempo.  He sentido muy comoda en D.C. Puedo verme estudiando en unas de las varias universidades que hemos visitado. Sientí que la atmósfera tenía un aspecto muy especial. Las tres universidades a que he visitado eran: George Washington University, American University, and Georgetown University.

El tiempo fue perfecto. Bueno, como es invierno allí también, lo más agradable que podría ser. Hacía sol pero había mucho viento. Fuera del sol, era frío.

En unas semanas me voy a los Twin Cities en Minnesota que esta a lado de Wisconsin. Visitaré sola una universidad, St. Thomas. Pero esa area es muy especial porque mi madre viene de allí. Subiré las fotos que tomo mientras estoy en St. Paul. Después mi viaje a The Twin Cities, os contaré sobre otro GRAN VIAJE que tengo planeado. Gracias por leyendo mi blog. Málaga, España

Hello all!

I have been freezing for the past couple of days here in Milwaukee. The bone-chilling winds, gray days, and slippery roads have really put a damper in my spirits. That's why I have been dreaming about Málaga. It's cold there too right now, but not as cold as it is here. I especially miss the summer and lounging by the beach. Here are some pictures of around my home away from home to warm you up if you're cold just like me.

I leave for Washington, D.C on the 6th of February and I could not be more excited! Have a great weekend :)

He estado congelando estos días pasados aquí en Milwaukee. Es muy frío y no lo puedo aguantar ni un día más! Ultímamente, he estado soñando sobre Málaga y las playas allí. New Year

Hola!

(Sorry for not writing for so long, but nothing very exciting has happened to me lately.)

How is everyone's new year? I cannot believe that it is 2013! These past two years have been a roller coaster, with planning my exchange to Spain, going, returning, re-adjusting.... This year is huge too! I finally will leave the nest for good. I got a little taste of independence last year; however, this fall, when I go to college it will be completely different!

The holidays passed me by in a blur. It also was my first White Christmas in 3 years! I was so happy to feel the Christmas spirit. I didn't do anything really exciting on New Year's Eve, but that doesn't matter because I will be so busy this year in the upcoming months.

I have really exciting news for all my travel junkies. My family and I will be going out East to visit colleges! Our trip is in a few weeks but I could not wait to write you guys. Since I applied to three schools in Washington D.C, that is where we will be. I am so very excited to go back and see Washington D.C, again. I cannot wait to sight see and take campus tours. I will take pictures and upload them here.

My first big trip since I have been home. I can't wait!

(Siento por no escribir en tantas semanas, pero es que nada muy interesante me ha pasado últimamente.)

Que tal el año nuevo? No me lo puedo creer que es 2013! Esos 2 años pasados han sido interesantes y muy divertidos. Con planeando mi viaje a España, yendo, regresando, re-acustombrando.... Este año es enorme también! Por fin saldré de mi casa. Yo he experimentado un poco con la independencia y la libertad el año pasado. Pero sin embargo, este otoño cuando vaya a la universidad sera completemente diferente.

Me han pasado las fiestas muy rápidas. Pero este año por fin vi a nieve. Hace tres navidades desde que vi a nieve, y este año no me ha decepcionado.

Tengo unas noticias super excitante por ustedes... Mi familia y yo hemos planeado un viaje a Washington DC, la capital de EEUU. Yo he enviado mis apps a tres universidades allí, entonces, lo vimos más apropriado ir a Washington en lugar de NYC o Philadelphia. Washington DC es una de mis ciudades favoritas en todo el mundo. (Pero la primera tiene que ser Roma) Yo tomaré fotografitas y subirlas para enseñaros.

Es mi primero gran viaje desde que he vuelto a casa! Qué emoción :)

Hello everyone,

When you think of Spain, what comes to mind?

I lived in Andalucia where its hot and the landscape is bare. And as you move south to north, it goes from desert to dense, green forests. To me, Malaga and Sevilla are home. However, I have seen the lush forests in the north. I was browsing on the National Geographic website and stumbled upon beautiful photos of Spain. I just wanted to share them with you. I miss being there so much. But today is Thanksgiving and I am super thankful that I am home for the holidays! Even though Thanksgiving is celebrated in America, everyone should give thanks for what he or she has. Happy Holidays!

Vivía en Andalucía, y a mi, Málaga y Sevilla son mis hogares. También vi los bosques en el norte y me pegaron. Estaba navegando por el internet cuando encontré unas fotos tomados en España y son impresionantes. Quería enseñarlas a vosotros. Echo mucho de menos a España. Pero hoy es Thanksgiving y estoy súper agradecido por mi familia y mis amigos que viven en todos partes del mundo. También me hace mucha ilusión de estar en mi casa por los navidades. College Apps 101 for Exchange Students

Hello everyone,

You will never believe what I have been doing today.

Filling out and sending in my college applications! I have been working on them since the start of school and it's a huge relief to have them sent in. I couldn't have done it without my mother.

I just wanted to say a few things to exchange students who are applying this year or going to apply to college next year. Firstly, you stand out among all applicants so it's important to highlight your study abroad experience. Add it to your activities list, add your foreign high school on your application, and I also expanded on the topic in my personal statement. Secondly, get started on your college apps as soon as you can! Gather up all your activities, awards, service experiences, and honors and put them into a word document as that will save you loads of time. Lastly, if at all possible, really get involved in the community while studying abroad. Do service, take a pottery class, piano lessons, run a race, join a sports club, maybe intern somewhere! Anything helps and it looks AWESOME on a college app. Trust me.

Sabéis lo que estuviera haciendo todo el día?

Rellenando y enviando mis aplicaciones a las universidades! Comencé trabajando en ellas al principio del Senior year y es un tremendo alivio por tener todo acabado. Muchas gracias a mi madre por su ayuda.

Solo quería decir algunas cosas a los estudiantes intercambios quien están aplicando este año o van a aplicar a las universidades el año que viene. Primero, tu aplicación ya tiene un aspecto interesante porque has estado fuera de tu país estudiando en otro por un año entero. Es importante acentuar tu experiencia! Hace falta incluir tu experiencia en una lisa de actividades, añade tu instituto extranjero en tu aplicación, y yo hablé sobre mi año en España en mi redacción personal. Segunda, comienza rellenando tus aplicaciones lo antes posible. Tercero, si es posible, haz algo en la comunidad mientras tu estancia. Ayuda los pobres, tomar clases de cerámica, piano, entrena por una competición, escríbete en un club de deportes. ALGO! Cualquier cosa. Si hagas algo en un país extranjero, es una buenísima cosa tener en tu aplicación.

Two Langauges!

Hello AFSers, family and international friends,

I have decided, like my friend Mariam does on her fashion blog, to start doing bilingual entries. Because English is my first language, it will be first; Spanish will be second. I will also add a tool to translate my text into other various languages such as Russian, French, and German. I hope you like my new ideas :)

Also, I will be adding more entries concerning my new encounters with international friends. And about my interests in other countries and cultures. And perhaps if I travel, I will write about my adventures and include photos.

If you haven't noticed, I changed my blog title to Katie en España y El Mundo. I thought it sounded better and better suited the content about which I write.

Hola estudiantes de intercambio, familiares y amigos internacionales,

He decidido, como mi amiga Mariam hace en su blog de moda, empezar escribiendo entradas bilingües en mi blog. Porque inglés es mi lengua natural, sera primero. Español sera segundo. También, voy a poner una applicación para traducir mis entradas a otros idiomas incluso Ruso, Francés, y Alemán. Espero que os guste mi idea :)

Además, voy a escribir más entradas sobre mis encuentras con amigos internacionales. Y sobre mis intereses en otos países y sus culturas. Tal vez, si yo haga un viaje a un país o ciudad interesante, os contaré sobre mis adventuras y os enseñaré fotos. (Como sabéis, viajar es mi pasión.)

Una cosa más, espero que hayáis notado que he cambiado el título del blog. Ahora se llama Katie en España y El Mundo. Creí que era más apropiado.

ha sido muxo tiempo

"It has been a long time."

Hola a todos,

How are you my international friends? I have been back since July 1. So roughly around 3 and 1/2 months. I think about Spain everyday. It is hard to let go and after much reflection, I love Spanish culture more than American culture. Sometimes I understand more here in America, speaking my first language; however, I feel like I belong to something greater while in Spain. I feel more connected to the people. Maybe because Spain is so much smaller than the USA. Maybe because it is my passion to learn and grow in another country.

Even though I am not in Spain currently, the flames of passion within my heart have not been extinguished; I will continue to serve and give back to the global community with my talents and education.

And even though I love Spain so much, that doesn't mean I am not patriotic about my home country. I still love studying American History. I want very much to study in college in Washington DC. I am in love with the fact that so many people from so many different countries, races, cultures, sexual orientations, families, etc., are united under one flag. I still am moved when I sing the national anthem. I love knowing that I will be protected. Nothing, no one person or country will ever be perfect, but I am pretty lucky to live in the United States of America.

My first blog entry EVER has come to my attention lately. I couldn't help but smile when I re-read it a few days ago. I seem so blissfully unaware of what is in store for me. I could have never imagined the magnitude of impact this experience has had on me, my family, friends, and community. I encourage everyone to keep an account of their journeys abroad.

As the weather here in Wisconsin gets colder and greyer, I am reminded of my first orientation with my friends in Andalucia. I love the nostalgic feeling I get when I look back on my pictures. Moments I never want to forget. Strolling the streets in Cordoba. The cold winter air. The constant feeling of adventure. My independence in Europe.

And coincidentally as I was typing this entry, my friend from Sevilla just called me on Skype! It was such a great surprise:) I have missed all of them so dearly. I will continue to talk to them. And when I return, I will give them all a big kiss.

Even though I had this great experience, my life for now is in the USA. I can't lose sight of what is real and important. Reality has set in, but I can always escape back to Spain in my dreams, memories, and pictures.

I have a youtube channel with a few videos of Spanish culture. Some are from Semana Santa, I have a video from a soccer match, and a video at my friend's house in Sevilla.

One Year

One year ago today, I began my Spanish life :) I never left it behind. I am counting down the days until I can return to my home away from home and see my beautiful friends once again. Macarena, Alfonso, Sara my host mom, Manolo, Fernando, Laura, Mariam my best friend, Maria, Barbara, Mariely, AFS students, and everyone else who touched my life this past year :) Os quiero ♥ Besos.

I will return soon with another post about school life here and in Spain. About colleges, and other AFS updates.

Welcome to all students in the USA and good luck to all students departing to various countries!

I am truly grateful for everything I was blessed with this year. I never took my life in Spain for granted for one moment.

Back in the Groove

Hey. It's been quite awhile since I have updated my blog.
Like I said before, even though the actual exchange is over, the experience will last a lifetime.

I am currently working on a volunteer application for AFS. I really want to help with orientations and be there for families and students.

I got home on the 29th of July. So it has been about a month and a half since I landed on US soil. So many things have happened. I am constantly talking with my friends over in Spain. I have told the same stories over and over again to family and friends here. Though I never do quite run out of new things to say. I have a job now! I am going to save every penny for college and travel money!

I have had a great transition back home. Milwaukee is a great place to live and I have the best support system here. My family and friends have helped me get back into the groove of things.

I feel so much more independent and adventurous.

I can't believe that I am going to take the ACT soon. I am looking into colleges or more accurately, those colleges have been sending me 1,000s of emails each day.

... and can't wait for all my AP classes to start giving me mountains of homework. ahhh.

The new AFS students are here! I know there is a Spanish girl going to my school! And I just can't wait to meet all of them soon.

Again. I will write some more post-return entries for awhile. I know fellow AFSer Mary Beth kept her blog going for a little bit, too. It just helps prolong the exciting feelings. Helps inspire more kids. Gives more feedback and advice about the ENTIRE experience.

Just wanted to send a quick post saying that I am not finished adding entries to my blog. There will be a few more entries to come.

First of all I would just like to say that I am safely back home in Milwaukee.
It has been a crazy nearly 2 first weeks in the States. I am happy to see my family and friends.
When I saw my sister at the airport I literally got the wind knocked outta my lungs. Seriously, I started hyperventilating.
I can't believe that my time in Spain ended! I am already thinking about going right back over again. I am looking for jobs. I am starting a fund! If anyone wants to help out? Haha I am kidding. Mostly...

Anyway, I am keeping up the Spanish. The family I babysit for is from Mexico so today all I did was speak in Spanish. I am watching my favorite TV shows in Spain on youtube.

Being back is strange. It feels like nothing has changed. A few things have. But it's not radically different. I think I might get a bigger shock when I start high school again. It's been nice to see the huge differences between the two countries I love the most in this world!

I have more stories and pictures. I just didn't want you guys to be left hanging. Like I said before, I may not be in Spain right now, but the experience isn't over. There are a few AFS students from Spain who are going to be here right in Milwaukee and the Midwest! Can't wait to meet the girl from Spain who is going to my school this year.

If anyone has questions they would like to ask, please comment below:) I will respond to as many as possible. Which probably will be all if there are any.

I only have 6 more days to go.
I can barely remember what I was doing 6 days into my stay. I think I was just coming home from the beach in Cadiz. And I was getting ready for my first day of school.
I didn't speak much. I basically said, "Si, Si, Si..."

Now I am walking around town all alone. Taking the public transportation. Taking buses, trains and planes by myself. Speaking to strangers. Taking care of business.

I am excited to get home. But I am not homesick. I can remember the first two weeks here were hard. I thought that I was gonna go home soon and that my stay here wasn't for real. It really hadn't hit me yet. It was crazy. I think I was a few weeks into the program when it truly hit me. I said, "I am here for some time." "I am not going home for a while."

I'm feeling kinda like that right now. I know I am going home. But it still hasn't hit me even though I am excited to see my family and friends.

I know people that seriously do not want to go back home. I get it. I don't want to give up my freedom. I don't want to lose this new culture, my new language and friends. I'm going to miss the beauty of Europe.
The students here have built strong relationships with their host-families and friends. They maybe even know their host city and country better than their own. I know both Sevilla and Malaga like the back of my hand.
But everyone should remember that they have a home and a family right back in their country. Someone is going to be happy that their child, grandchild, nice, nephew, sibling or whatever has returned.

Life will be really different when I get back home to the states. But being here has made me really appreciate my country. And even though the USA isn't perfect and some people have some strong opinions... I am proud to be an American.
I also like this saying about life. Because life is always changing. Another lesson I have learned here.

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.

But I have had a year full of experiences. I am kinda sad that it's over but also glad that it happened.

Hello.

My last full week of school just ended. I have packed a box to ship home. And I have everything organized. If I needed to leave tomorrow I could. It's crazy to think that my time here is pretty much almost over. I have had so many adventures. Crazy dreams and silly conversations. I have made so many friends and talked with a lot of new people from all over the world. I am genuinely excited to be going back home. I don't want to leave Spain though either! I have my friends and my family here, but I also have my friends and family in America to whom I need to return.

I'll miss the crazy Spanish heat down here in Andalucia! Sweat rolls down your your back if your outside for only 5 minutes. I'll miss the incredible shopping. Zara, Stradivarius, Mango, Lefties... I'll miss the ease of traveling. I'll miss the culture. I am a southern Spanish girl. Funny because the southerners here in Andalucia have a different accent than those in Madrid or in Bilbao. Kinda like how people in America can have a southern accent and a New York accent. What I really like about Spain? Is that there is a concrete culture. It's pretty typical to sit down to watch a futbol or soccer match here. It's pretty typical to go to the store to buy fresh loaves of bread every morning or afternoon. It's pretty typical to cut off jamon iberico right off the pig's leg. I love the Spanish atmosphere. During the Spring everyone is so excited for Semana Santa and Feria. The summer is all about spending time with friends and family and going to the beach or to the pool. The way they talk. It's so beautiful. They have lovely sayings like, "If you chase two rabbits, Both will escape." They talk loud, and they talk a lot.When I am with someone new, I usually have a quieter voice and someone always tells me to yell because they can't hear me. I love the sense of familia and amistad (friendship). I love being able to get away with a few things that we teens can't do in the States. I love Spanish TV. The News has this little jingle that makes me happy every time I hear it. I love "Aqui no hay quien viva" and "La que se avecina". They are the best shows on the planet.

It will be a little weird to have to do my school work in English. Ya know? Even though I speak English here sometimes, I haven't done any important school work excessively in English. My notes are in Spanish. I usually study in Spanish...

I love that in America everything is different. Every family has their own traditions. My family has special traditions on Christmas Eve and New Year's. My family puts a cross our heads with honey after we celebrate the breaking of the bread on Christmas Eve at our house. And My mother always leaves us a quarter underneath our plates on New Year's Eve. America is made up of different cultures from all over the world. It's a mix. That's what makes my country so special. I love referring to the USA as "mi país" or my country. But I love being able to relate and Identify with a whole other culture and country. What's acceptable, what's not. How the school systems work. What family is, when the meal times are...etc.

Here the people are usually categorized in a few groups. Now I have near and dear friends who are very different from one another but special in their own ways. Here are examples..
- "Los Canis and las chonis" The cool kids. They usually look like this...

- " Los gitanos" or a Gypsy
Lot of times have long hair. They are a very different group of people.
- " Los pijos" Love expensive labels. Always are perfectly dressed. Not a single strand of hair out of place. The boys and men with a pretty colored sweater over the shoulders.
- " Los freakis" Those who kinda dress in darkish colors. Goth, rock, punks.
- And there are other groups that still exist. But just those are the ones that are special to Spain. I know that they are people like this everywhere, but it's different when you are here. You just have to come and see for yourself.
I can't even try to explain it.

I know I have changed. I have realized that I am one person. Even though some things don't seem to be working out my way and everything is going down the tubes, I know that there is always someone else worse off than I am. And time keeps moving forward. It'll pass. I have accomplished so much. I now believe that life isn't about "finding yourself" it's more about who you create yourself to be. You understand the things you like, and the things you need, and you work to achieve them. You build your life with the things you have worked to achieve. It's all about having the right attitude. I also believe that it's totally OK if you just want to feel hurt, sit down and cry. I am human and I can't be totally put together all the time. Even when other's think that you should just "get over it" or "settle down" or "rub some dirt on it and carry on." Just cry and/or feel a little sorry for yourself. It doesn't matter that you fall down and hit rock bottom. What counts is whether you pick yourself off the ground or not. That's what matters. It's getting up. Shaking it off. And putting one foot in front of the other and moving on. And not dwelling on the past helps a lot too.

When I touch down in New York I have to catch a flight to Detroit. After that, I am going home. Finally. After 10 months. I have seen my family on skype. Talked to them. But I haven't seen them past their torsos. I haven't physically touched them. It will be nice to have something familiar back in my life. Of course I'll miss everyone and a lot of things here. But I have had a great 10 months of experience. I've overcome a lot. I've picked myself off the ground numerous times. Ya know? It's funny the way things all work out.

Hi. How are you guys?

Well, I am OK. Things are coming to an end VERY quickly here and I feel that I don't have enough time to do what I want. I leave to Madrid the 28th and the flight is the 29th. aaaaaaaaa

I want to go to Marbella, (The LA of Spain) and Gibraltar, (Technically you are in the UK when you go there, but you can see Africa) and Nerja, one of the prettiest beaches I have ever seen.
I want to hang out with my friends here in Malaga and in Sevilla. I want to go back to Madrid, go to the beaches in Portugal, hang out at BBQ's, sing, dance, laugh, go to the Feria de Malaga! Just have a great Spanish Summer. Well, if I save up my money all this year, I can come back next summer. I'll be 18 and it will be a nice break right before college! (Now I am going to get an e-mail from my parents)

I am continuing to have dreams in Spanish. I don't want those to end. I wonder what will happen to them when I am back in the States and there is English all around me. I usually watch my TV in Spanish. Very rarely will I switch it to English. I watched 'Gone with the Wind' last night. I really liked that movie.

When Scarlet realized she truly loved Captain Red and not Ashley , it was way too late. She begged and pleaded for Red to stay. When that didn't work she asked him what will she do without him. He finally turned around and said, "Frankly, I don't give a damn." End scene. I LOVED that part. For so many reasons.

I just occurred to me that I haven't heard little kids screaming in English my whole entire year here. I hear random people speaking English walking down the street. I hear students, teachers, my American friends. However, not little kids. Like when they are playing.

So right now, I am feeling a little like I did right before I left.
- What will happen?
- What am I going to do when I get there?
- Will I like it?
- How am I going to feel? Happy, sad, angry, miserable, homesick, joyous...etc.
Do you see how these questions can be asked at either end of the experience?

School gets out the 22 of June. Oh take me now! This is horrible! It's sunny, and hot, and worst of all I can see the beach while I am sitting in Physics Class. Dios Dios Dios.

This past weekend I went to Bilbao with my family for my mother's nephew's first communion. Phew that was a lot of possessives.
I loved it up in the North. It is SOO green. It feels kinda like being in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The bluffs, the winding river, trees, trees everywhere! It's so different from down here in the south. It's beautiful. The ocean is close by. So I have been in the south, the middle, and the north of Spain. Oh how I love this country.

Well, my host-mother's family is from Bilbao. I had mentioned it to her that I wanted to go if possible. And I went! I met up with a friend in AFS while up there. Her name is Lena and she is from Germany. I stayed with her family for two days. They are the most welcoming people ever. She introduced me to her friends and showed me around downtown. Most of you may know that a Guggenheim museum is in Bilbao, Spain. I took TONS of pictures of the museum. I went in. However, just the entrance. I didn't have enough time to spend inside looking at all the wonderful art. I spent about 3 hours in the Prado in Madrid!

I took the metro into the center with Lena and her friend Anders after we spent the day going to little towns with her family. In the town of Getxo (Het-cho) there is an enormous bridge that connects the two banks of the river. It transports cars from one side of the river to the other town. But it's quite an unusual bridge. You'll see.

The flight up there wasn't bad. About an hour and a half. I went from Friday morning until Monday morning. But on Friday, I had to get up at 5.15 am and be ready by 5.30. The flight left at 6.45! What a morning. I left with my two brothers while their dad drove us to the airport. (Which is about 10 minutes from my house) I was so exhausted when we got there. My mom was already there. She is an air-hostess and she was in London the day before. So she just caught a flight to Bilbao. Anyway. She meet us there and we took the bus right to the corner two blocks away from her sister's apartment. Very convenient. That's another thing I will miss, the ease of travel. Really, it is a LOT easier here. Well after we settled down. I took a nap with Sara until 12. Then my brother's and I took a walk down to the museum. After that, we took Manolo up to the coast for his surf lesson. The little Puebla is called Mundaka. Just a little fishing, surfing village. And the drive is curvy and steep. I was a little car-sick.

On Monday morning, Lena's host-dad took me to the airport. I feel so proud. I got through security. Found the gate. Got to Malaga. Found my way out! (That was the part about which I was most freaked out!) Just that little bit of independence and trust. I love it. I thrive on it.

Anyway, when I got home. We had a German exchange student in our house. His name is Sebastian (I have no idea if that's German or not) and sadly, he went home today. Very nice kid. I enjoyed his company a great deal. One night Manolo, Sebastian, and I stayed up until 12 in the morning looking and and talking about cars. A natural conversation. I love cars. So I wanted to show Sebastian my dream car and with him being from Germany, he was super excited. I asked him why he was so excited and he responded, "I think that a person's dream car tells something about them." (Oh and by the way, I don't speak German, he can't speak that well in Spanish. But he can speak English.) So I finally revealed that I love Aston Martins.

I mean, who doesn't? It's a beautiful, discrete, luxurious car. Not flashy like Ferrari's or Bugatti's. And not cliche like BMW or Mercedes. But it comes with a lovely price tag.

Anyway. I will post pictures from Bilbao. Trust, me. You will love them. I also used a cool effect on my iPod to take pictures that looked like they were taken in the 60s or around there.
I am going to Sevilla again in the morning to see my friend Noelle and watch my brother's rowing competition!

Kissing games, Tribal rituals, Paper airplanes! Go AFS.

Howdy Y'all.

How's life been this week? Mine has been OK. I have been thinking about my year in depth; reflecting, contemplating. Especially this past weekend since we had the last AFS orientation. It was bittersweet. Seeing the kids who are just beginning their journeys and realizing we are ending ours.

I have been listening to the same song on repeat since the beginning of last summer. This awesome band, Bon Iver (pronounced [Bonne Hiver] like French) is from Wisconsin and has preformed all over the world. They have built up quite a lot of fame recently. Their first CD "For Emma, Forever Ago" was written during the long cold winter in Wisconsin a few years ago. My favorite song is "Skinny Love." It reminds me of Wisconsin. You can envision yourself Up North in winter, but your're not that cold because your bundled up in warm blankets. It's very Nostalgic. Here is the link if you want to check it out. He has an odd voice but I love listening to him, and the guitar, and the lyrics. Just wanted to let you know that is how I dealt with the sadness I sometimes got when I wanted to go home. I still listen to the song now. I love it.

Anyway. Back to the Orientation. I met some pretty incredible kids. They all had their quirks and flaws, but then again...Who doesn't? I sure as hell have mine!!!
I got picked up on Friday afternoon by my liaison Barbara. She drove Maria and Ally (of course) and I up the coast about 30 minutes to Torremolinos. It's a great little tourist trap. You have your shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, beaches...etc. And it's teeming with British people. All I heard were English people yapping all around. I quite love their accent. Although I do a lousy impression.

I didn't realize that the new AFS kids in Andalucia were planning on attending our meeting, too. The thought did pass through my mind because I read in past blogs that this usually happens. Anyway. I got there and I started chatting with two really nice girls named Ana and Maria.

Ana is from Jaen and is going to Finland. Maria is from Malaga and is going to be living in Michigan, right outside of Chicago. I roomed with the two girls and another friend Jaime. Our group, which included me, was called the 'hostings' because we are already here on our exchange and the other group was called the 'sendings' because they are about to embark on their adventures.

Activities ranged from group discussions to everyone playing games together. My favorites were the Kissing game, the Massage circles, and the shouting circle.

The kissing game was by far the most exciting. The girls had a letter. The boys had a number. Someone was put in the center to start. If it was a she, she called out a letter (girl) and a number (boy). The boy had to try to kiss the girl sitting in the center (who can't move) on the cheek before the other new girl called into the center stole a kiss on the cheek from him. If the boy kissed the girl in the circle, the new girl called would be the one in the center. If the she stole a kiss from him, he sat in the center. Then he would call a new letter (girl) and a new number (boy) and the girl would have to try to kiss him before the new guy stole a kiss from her. It got pretty rough. I got knocked to the floor on some occasions. Other guys got tackled by girls trying to prevent them from kissing the girl in the center. It was all fun and games. Sometimes you just had to laugh at some of the pairs who were called out. You knew that they wanted to kiss the other person. ONLY in Spain. I would LOVE to play this game again. But I don't think many kids in other countries would be to comfortable with this one. Or parents...

The other exciting activities we did were going to the beach during the day. And just going out at night. What happened in Torremolinos will stay in Torremolinos. Crazy kids.

The other interesting thing was when the 'hostings' invited the 'sendings' to a sacred ritual.

Actually the whole point of the exercise was to teach them that coming into a new culture is not always easy.
You might know that it will be different. But you have no idea what to expect. Anyway. Our tribe was called the Albatross. We all wore white tunics. I was the queen of the tribe so I had a special head part to play. We had our own gibberish language and nodded yes when we were saying no and vice-versa. Being the queen, I had to welcome each lady with a greeting, and feed and quench thirsts for everyone. The Food was different. We tricked them and feed them crackers with ketchup that looked like chocolate because we mixed chocolate sauce into it. And after I feed them (which most of them burped or gaged) {nor could they spit it out because we had no napkins or trash cans} I went around with the water....with a little vinegar mixed in. I directly feed the boys. Put the cracker into their mouths. Held the water cup to their lips. The king had a huge elaborate throne... while I sat on the cold ground even though I was a the queen. The other boys had chairs too and could keep their shoes on. The girls had to sit like me on the ground with no shoes. It all seems pretty sexist, huh? Such a chauvinistic society!

Actually in this culture. The men are considered to be un-pure, dirty. They can't touch the food they eat or have direct contact with the ground. So they have to keep their shoes on. Their women will always feed them. The Women are considered sacred, pure and natural beings. We don't need shoes. We can feed ourselves. You see where I am going. I bet even you thought that the tribe I was describing before was sexist and chauvinistic! Never Judge. This was all a valuable lesson. Even to me.

I can't wait to see some of the AFS kids who are going to be living right in my neck of the woods. I really want to help out that the orientations and everything like that.

I'll write a new post about my feelings on coming home. I am going to Bilbao this weekend. It's way on the other side of the country in the North. I can hardly wait!!!!

Sevilla and Paella

How was your weekend? Mine was great. I met up with my friends in Sevilla. It felt like I never had left because I know them so well, but people and other things have certainly changed. Walking around my old town Montequinto felt totally normal. And being downtown Sevilla once again reminded me of how well I know the city. I went to my friends birthday party. I was the surprise so when everyone saw me, I got attacked. Hugs and thousands of kisses. It made me pretty happy. I am going to try to go one more time before I leave. Leaving was a little bittersweet. The train however took me through the country sides. It ranged from little pueblas to rolling plains to sharp cliffs and rivers. The bright blue Mediterranean sea welcomed me back to Malaga.

My Crazy Day and the 25 things I did.

Ok this is what I did today. Pretty Normal stuff :)

1. I got up
2. My mother and I went to go buy 5 loaves of bread at 7.45 in the morning.
3. I arrive at school and NO ONE is there.
4. We run down the hall in order to beat the Math teacher to class. Even though the first bell hasn't rung. I was running with my 5 loaves of bread in my arms. And I am in my suit.
5. I wore a bikini to school today.
6. Biology test.
7. Study hall. Went outside.
8. The school had Paella day. So they make little fires for every class to make Paella. Commence Paella making at 12.
9. Our class brought all the ingredients. Paella Pan. Rice. Chicken. I brought the bread. Then 3/4 of the kids leave. Me and 3 other friends make the Paella. Have I mentioned that the chicken wasn't pre-cut? Learned how to gut and de-bone a whole chicken today :)
10. Everyone cracking jokes that the American can make the Paella better than the Spaniards can.
11. My bestest friend Ally is taking everyone's picture with her big official Nikon pro camera.

13. Leave school to go to beach.
13,5. So our Argentinian friends just decided to walk around with no shirts on after school in the streets. Ooo Franco y Misa.

17. Meet little 8 year old girl from Switzerland. Poor thing didn't have any friends or speak English or Spanish. So we played paddle and volleyball with her. I got to use my French!

19. Go home.
20. Get home. Shower, take trash out. Eat dinner.
21. Julian (AFS) and his parents and grandparents come over.
22. They stay longer than expected (10 until 12.30). Nevertheless, it was a really fun night.
23. I'm writing this blog.
24. I need to pack for Sevilla because I am going for the weekend.
25. Go to bed.

Hope you enjoyed my day! Bio test went well. And yes, some of these things may seem crazy, strange and out of the ordinary. Like 5, 8, 10. But that is totally normal in Spain. My favorite parts of the day were: 2, 5, 9, 10, 17, and 22.

Buenas,

It's been about a week since I posted about my time spent in Granada. I hoped you all enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

It's April 28th. In exactly two months I will wake up and spend the last full 24 hours in Spain. I will board a plane bound for NYC on the 29th. And in doing so, I will be leaving behind my new
family, home, the two cities I have fallen in love with, friends, and experiences.

It's been 8 months. Those 8 months were full of experiences, hardships, opportunities, and life lessons. I would love
to say that " Nunca olvidaré" which means "I will never forget." However, the truth its: I, like most students, did not keep a journal in my hand, and a pencil behind my ear in order to document my experiences hour by hour, day by day. Most of the hilarious Jokes and deep conversations, will be forgotten. I may forget some people, and some of them will most likely forget me. However, those experiences happened, jokes were told, tears from sadness or happiness flowed. It is set in the past. I have my blog, my limited but insightful personal journal entries, my memories, my pictures, and the friends with whom I will maintain contact to help remind me of what I did during my 10 months abroad.

I will comeback to Spain. I will go back to Sevilla. To see Semana Santa and finally get to Feria and reunite with my friends. To walk the same streets I did when I was 16. I will make that drive to Malaga and take a deep breath when I see the ocean. It will feel like coming home after a long trip to my other home in America. Sevilla, Malaga, and Milwaukee. They all feel familiar. I feel safe and happy to be home in all three. I could not imagine my life without them.

I, like many other students, have kept slight tabs on my friends back home via Facebook, Twitter and email. I also, like every other AFSer abroad, wonder if they have forgotten about me. Even if it doesn't matter to me that much. Still we wonder. Some probably don't miss my absence. Some may wonder what I am doing right at that second. What I would like them to know is that even though I preferred to be in Spain, I still wish I could have shared some of the typical American junior year experiences with them.

I know I know I know that it's coming. These few questions. When I get home, I will forever be asked these simple but incredibly annoying questions.
1. How was Spain? Did you have fun?
2. What was your favorite part? Your least?
3. Would you do it again? Even after knowing all that you've gone through?

I have been thinking about how I can answer these questions with poise and grace without sounding like an annoyed snapping turtle. I can't lie to you guys. Even though I will appreciate being asked about one of the most important experiences in my life with genuine interest, a sense of curiosity, and good intentions, it will test my patience. I just didn't spend a year abroad. I got a new life. I lived in a new and different way. I made another life. I did not stay the same person. I changed drastically. So as of right now I promise to have fully formed responses already practiced and recited so many times that it will feel as normal as breathing when I have to respond.
1. How can I possibly tell you a story in a few moments when it took ten months to write it. Of course I had fun. But I cried, I was frustrated, I wanted to come home, I didn't want to leave, etc. If you have a few extra minutes go read my blog. Those entries may offer incredible insights to what I did during my year. If you want, I can come over and show you my pictures. I would be happy to tell a story of one of the experiences I had. Like the time when someone told me I was starring at a bunch of famous people at a restaurant. But couldn't distinguish between 'los famosos' and the waiters.
2. I can't tell you the best part. Because that answer doesn't exist. I had thousands of tiny but precious moments with friends. I made memories. I will never forget the night I went to my best friend's birthday party in the countryside in Sevilla. I had thousands of horrible experiences. Switching families, the harsh reality of loosing friends. My first day of school. Again, read the blog. It probably can tell you more than I can.
3. Of course I would do it again. Along with all the unpleasant moments I went through. There is no other experience that exists on the plant that could sway my mind. From getting into creative discussions with the people with whom I did not see eye to eye, to climbing 'Las Setas' in Sevilla to look out over the gorgeous city, to seeing a play acted out at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Italica, to roaming around London with my classmates to drinking tea and eating the best gelato in Malaga with my best Spanish friend Mariam and my Spanish mother. Like the quote from an unknown author says, "A bend in the road is not the end of a road, unless you fail to make the turn."

I have made friends from all over the world. I can't wait for the day that we will be reunited again. Maybe I will go to Japan to see Kyo and Akria, or travel to Turkey to see San, visit Slovakia to hang out with Ivana.
I have really good American friends here in Malaga with me. Ally and Julian. However we are all from 3 separate parts of the United States. Ally lives in Old Lyme, Connecticut on the east coast, I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the Midwest, and Julian lives in San Francisco, CA on the West Coast. I have made friends from Alaska, all the way to Virginia. Ya never know who you will see walking down the street in Chicago or NYC.

Of course I will carry my habits from Spain to America. As I have carried my habits from America to Spain. I will be modified by another culture yet again (expect this time it is MY culture that will be changing me). Maybe I want to take Siesta like in Spain. I will want my 'heart healthy' all American breakfasts once again. (If I don't go out to breakfast the first day I'm back, someone will suffer) I will want to go out later and sleep in later like in Spain; however, I can't do that. I will be able to drive again. But I probably won't ever take the buses in Milwaukee. I will miss the buses, taxis, and the metro in Spain.

I have two lives. One here in Spain. One in America. The Harsh reality. I can't have both. And even when I return to my American Family and friends, my American life will not be the same as it once was. Even when I return to Spain, I can't have the same life as I did before. My life in America won't be the same because it will be affected by my Spanish life and vice-versa. I already know I will consciously and unconsciously mix the two lives together. I will continue on living "Sin prisas, sin pausa" which means " Without rush, without pause."

The Alhambra

I recently went to Granada to explore the city and visit the Alhambra. Some of you might know that Washington Irving made a trip to Spain. He rode horseback from Sevilla to Granada. During his journey he composed a wonderful book called 'Cuentas de la Alhambra' or 'Tales of the Alhambra' published in 1832. It is a collection of ancient, mystical, and mysterious stories that all took place in Granada and the Alhambra as well as 'recounts of his journey across Andalucia.' The Moors, the Arabic Sultans, humble water-boys, etc. The myths are all believed to be based on true facts. I read it, and I highly recommend it. Even when I wasn't there, I could feel the cool roll off the brick walls. When I was there I felt surrounded by a hazy atmosphere. It is tranquil, peaceful. I realize that the Sultans were going for a 'Heaven on Earth' vibe when building the Alhambra. If you think it's incredible nowadays, I'd love to go back a few hundred years before Ferdinad and Isabella (Los Reyes Catolicos) conquered the Alhambra. Back to when the fountains were bubbling with ice cold water, heavy incense burning in every dark corner, elegant princesses and princes wrapped in silk dripping with pearls and precious stones, lush gardens full of flowers of every color, relaxing music playing down the halls, etc. It must have been beyond words. The Alhambra is also said to be haunted. I don't think I'd like to be there alone after dark. You really feel like you have been transported to Morocco or somewhere in the Middle East when you visit Granada. Modern Presidents, Princes, heads of states all make a side stop to the Alhambra when they visit the south of Spain. The markets, the restaurants, the architecture. It is a beautiful city. It's April.

The middle of April.

My Birthday is on Sunday the 22nd.

It's so crazy what has happened to me since I arrived in the beginning of September. I have meet so many people. Some I only knew for a day, others I will be in contact with for a long time. The littlest bit of kindness shown towards me will not be forgotten. I've been so many places and my eyes have seen so many interesting things. I've tried new foods. Been to new cities. Thought new thoughts. Some of my beliefs have changed. I've been on this Earth for close to 17 years (mas o menos) and I believe that I have experienced much more than the average American teenager will ever experience. I say that respectively of course.

Not many teens are thrown into a situation where they have to fend for themselves. No one speaks your language. This is not your country. You are a little shy and unsure. You are not sure what classes you have. The first day of school in Sevilla was one of the WORST days of my life. WORST. I emphasize the word WORST once more. But my last day, was also one of the hardest. I came to love each and everyone of those kids. Some of them were extremely good at English. But essentially, they are my Spanish friends. I talk to at least one of them each day. Malaga is beautiful. It is peaceful and chaotic at the same time. The ocean gives it mystery the mountains in the background give it character. However, even with this said. Sevilla is my love. The city. My friends. I may have not gotten along with a few people there, but that's life. I do not have any hostile feelings towards anyone.

Adults, children, kids my age. Random people on the street. People from different countries. Everyone has changed my life or offered some sort of effect. Every second.... you change. You burn a calorie, or you eat a couple hundred. You think a new thought. You remember. You smile, cry, yell....etc You dream new dreams. You get enthusiastic you get depressed. The wish that you wished for on a star came true. Or didn't. You CHANGE. You want something new. You throw something out. You doubt yourself. You believe in yourself.

It's scary yet beautiful..... Change. In my opinion, it's not what comes after that scares me, it's the responsibility I have. I know that moment of truth is coming. That moment of truth scares me the most. I Choose A or B. And the consequences are different for each choice. You will adjust to the changes. It's just taking that leap. Choosing to put your toe over the line. Over the point of no return. You can't take something back. Something you said, thought, saw... You can try to hypnotize yourself, but it still happened. (Please, let's not bring Philosophy into this. I'm talking here.) My ability, the POWER to make something happen is within me. I have learned that I am capable of anything I want. I'm not talking about buying the moon, or becoming the next Princess (well... hey! ya never know). I'm saying that if I really want to pass that math test. I can make it happen.

"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring." Marilyn Monroe said that. Imperfection is beauty. Even the most beautiful faces are somewhat asymmetrical. Nature, is full of imperfections. It still takes my breath away. Live each day so you won't regret it. I'm not asking you to go out and get drunk or run up the down escalators. (Well I did the 2nd once. OK a few times. FINE, even a security guard has given me a look)

Being boring is awful. Sitting around for something to happen will not get you anywhere. It's a hard task to make a change, get off your bum and fight for what you want. But it's necessary. Hey, If you make a mistake. You will learn. No one is perfect. According to Marilyn, if imperfection is beauty, then perfection would be grotesque.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, " People are always getting ready to live, but never living." You can't sit in your room at your desk and keep asking yourself "WHAT IF?" I curse those words. It is a poisonous combination of two harmless words. It will give you nightmares. They will pester you all daylong. I will never be able to say, 'what if.' Sure, They might pass through my mind, but I shrug my shoulder's, roll my eyes and say "Well, it really doesn't matter now!" Lo hecho esta hecho. What's done is done. I've learned here, that you CAN go into a situation and wing it. (MOST the time) Going to a new city for the day? Google the place. Get some ideas. And just GO! Lost? Ask someone which direction. End up some place unexpected? Awesome. I was walking home from church. This one elderly man asked me where some road was and we ended up having a hour long conversation. He was Spanish. But when you're only going to know a person for 1 hour.....you don't have to be shy. On vacation? Like my mother says, "You're never going to see these people again."

Ralph also famously said, "Imitation is suicide." Don't try to be someone else. BElieve in YOUrself. Don't sell yourself out for some cheap sideshow act. Take a breath. Smile. Don't worry that people are judging you. You are a beautiful person. I'll pull a Lady Gaga, 'You were born this way.'

Un Procesión de Semana Santa

Hola.

I went to downtown Malaga yesterday and experienced some really cool culture. Semana Santa is less than 2 weeks away! Everyone is so excited! Semana Santa is celebrated extremely differently in Spain. But Los Procesiones are more special in Andalucia. Especially in Malaga and Sevilla. Holy Week is much more intense. Usually there are processions everyday officially beginning Palm Sunday up until Easter Sunday. The people carry statues of Mary, and Jesus on giant floats carried on the backs of men. They are not pulled by a tractor - cough Wisconsin - which is pretty impressive to the average foreign onlooker. Everyone is out on the street. Talking and cheering when the Procesión comes by. Don't be freaked out when you see marchers going by wearing garments reminiscent of the Klu Klux Klan. The KKK-ish clothes are meant to represent people from Nazareth. They are called "Nazareños" and are not meant to send any type of offensive message. They are religious fraternities or 'brotherhoods' responsible for organizing the processions, Los costaleros, los musicos, los uniformes. There is a lot of planning that goes into one single procession. To them it's very sacred. To the people it's very special. To me it's sacred, mysterious, special, and it brings tears to my eyes.

The men who actually carry the main floats are called "costaleros" and they are expected to carry these 'thrones' with grace and reverence. The word costaleros derives from the word 'costal' which is a small special type of cushion used to protect los coltaleros from the wood gorging into their shoulders during the long processions. They are highly respected. Los Gitanos or the gypsies are also very famous for their versions of Semana Santa Procesiones. I also saw one women candle bearer, treking it in 6 inch heels. Only in Spain.

Hey! Sorry, but these are the last of the pictures from London.

Nothing too interesting has been going on lately. I really want to go to Madrid for the Enrique Iglesias Concert and Barcelona just to visit.

It's starting to get really warm here. I walk everyday to school. It's such a nice walk listening to music (I need to get pumped up everyday for school). Seeing the beach everyday is quite surreal. You might wonder how I manage to study with the beach and warm weather...Well, I don't know how to describe it but you get used to it. I didn't understand it at first either.

It's March 20th today. I leave in 3 months and 9 days. I feel like I have changed so much. This journey has been very long and very interesting. I have been with 3 families. But now, I feel that everything is going to be alright. Before, I was always on edge and was afraid that I was going to mess up at any moment. I wasn't totally unhappy. Both families in Sevilla did wonderful things for me. But sometimes, after awhile, real personalities shine through. Both sides have different philosophies of life. AFS tells you that it's so uncommon to change. But it seems to me that a lot of students have been changing. It might be just this year, or they just tone down the truth. I know at least 2 other girls who have had two other families and are living with a third. You really need to be strong in order to be a foreign exchange student. For example, I always get really nervous when I need to read in front of a class. I mess up the words all the time. It's bad when I try to read in English. It's a little worse in Spanish. I don't know why, but I just can't read smoothly. So today the teacher was like, you need to improve your Castellano. It wasn't helping that most of the students where talking or laughing. Who knows. That's life.

I can't believe how many different places to which I have traveled. London, Cambridge, Stamford, Peterborough, in England. Sevilla, Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, Malaga, (I hope Madrid and Barcelona) in Spain. I went to Casablanca, Morocco. We landed in Switzerland when we arrived to Europe. You don't know how much I really want to go to Paris and Rome. Oh well. Another time.

Now I have to focus on College stuff. I'd better go now. Enjoy the pictures :)

These are the pictures I took from both our day trips to London. I would really love to go back. There is just so much to do! But we didn't have much time. I love London, and Sevilla, and Malaga, and Casablanca, but my favorite city in the WHOLE universe is Roma. Did you ever notice that 'Roma' is 'Amor' (love) spelled backwards? Coincidence?
