Who is Katoikei ?
Born in South Africa in '58. Learned my first guitar chord in '72. Composed my first song in '76.

Since '87, I have recorded with 6 brilliant musicians, who just happened to be really great bassists as well...: Vaughan Tromp (1987), Johan Yo Yo Buys (1988), Howard Butcher (1994), Bruce Taylor (1996 - 2005), Andy Dunlop (2006) and Mike Pachelli (2007).

I enjoy all kinds of music, but in particular gentle acoustic instrumentals.
I am passionate about doodles , jesus music, scribbles and audio visions

The first time I heard this band was on a compilation 'Jesus Music' album which has long since disappeared but the name "JC POWER OUTLET" stuck! So when I got my first computer, I designed a banner of cardboard and stuck it on my computer.

So, when I saw the two albums above on 'A Decade of Jesus Music 1969 - 1979' in mp3 format, I got really, really, REALLY EXCITED!
I'm a regular follower of FLIPSIDEMN. So when I saw these delicious covers, I could not contain myself any longer and decided to share them with y'all.

Along with 'Sail on Sailor', this has got to be one of our favorite Christian albums. He also did another album 'The Invisible Man' (though it's not really my bag musically) it is full to the brim with spiritual truth and insights by brother Oden.

MARANATHA MUSIC

Do you remember the Maranatha Music albums. When I was in my late twenties, these albums began to flood the Christian record shop, and I could not resist their groovy covers. It was so creative, compared to all the stiff and anti-septic stuff that I had previously seen. So I snapped them up.
I will be posting up their covers, and a link to where you can find the mp3s.

TAKING BACK RADIO

In the 50's I experienced my first evolution, from conception to birth (btw. it did not take millions of years) LOL!
In the 60's the sounds I loved were produced by the RADIO!

In the 70's I got a turn-table and began spinning vynil!
In the 80's Television came and little by little the house was emtied....
In the 90's The Internet gained dominance and the house was suddenly fill again...

In the Second Millenium something fantastic began happening....

We are ' TAKIN' RADIO BACK '

For me it all began while I was on the CHRISTIAN METAL REALM and I read about ' THE FULL ARMOUR OF GOD BROADCAST ' and became and immediate fan.

That's what I am doing...'TAKIN' BACK RADIO'

Oh yeah, and just the other day, the force that got me all back into this...my old friend, ' SPRINGBOK RADIO ' < which is no more, but due to the hard work of a small group of dedicated souls...SPRINGBOK RADIO IS LIVING ON !!...

'LEVITICUS' was a Christian metal band from Sweden. The band formed in 1981 and was led by Bjorn Stigsson. They released four albums before breaking up in 1990.

The band's early releases were metal with symphonic influenses using the Roland synthesizer guitar and Moog Taurus pedals. Knights of Heaven showed a move toward a more melodic rock based sound.

In 1986 the band went through lineup changes: Ez Gomer was brought in to replace Håkan Andersson on bass, and Terry Haw joined.[4] Both were with the band through Setting Fire to the Earth (1987), then left to form Jet Circus.

They played the famous Greenbelt festival at Castle Ashby Northamptonshire England three times 1984 1985 1987. They toured Sweden Finland Norway Denmark and England in 86-87 with the new lineup.March 1987 they played the famous Scandinavium Arena in Gothenburg for the second time (85 first time) on a big festival the show was filmed by the Swedish Television.In early 88 they toured again in Sweden and in april they returned to England. Their first United States tour was in august 1988, when they opened for Larry Norman and played as his backup band.' ...

During the mid-80's, Barnabas clashed with some church organizations who disapproved of a heavy metal sound being used in a Christian context. Noted critics included Bob Larson, Jimmy Swaggart, Bill Gothard and Jerry Falwell.

Some think that the controversy finally took it's toll, as Barnabas broke up after the recordings were completed for Little Foxes in 1986. However, it is a known fact that Christian heavy metal continued to flourish well into the next millennium, and is still going strong today, with millions of fans and strong support from many established churches.

Since then several of Barnabas' albums have been re-released on compact disc, and may be available at the Blast Beats website

Having grown up in Africa, it has taken 15 years for this band to finally do a concert in my brain. Thanks to my goodly theologically minded friends at Theology Web Campus, and my genius tuber friend on youtube.com; the curtains are up and the 'DANIEL BAND' is on stage...in my mind. Praise God!

What should Christians write songs about?

"Songs dealing with truth, whether it is truth about God, about man, about the universe, whatever. Most Christians would say that the music should in some way glorify God. Obviously, one assortment of notes on the scale can't glorify God more than another. Neither can certain assortments of words. Most Christians seem to think the words themselves do the glorifying, because so many Christian songs contain theological words. If you are an up and coming Christian singer and you have to sing for a Christian audience, you'd better throw as many words like "saved" or "hallelujah" or "sweet Jesus" as you can, otherwise your spirituality will be discussed behind your back. But anybody can say the words.
Like Groucho says, 'Say the secret woid, the duck comes down, you win a hunnid dollas.'"

How can music glorify God?

"Music cannot; but people can. Glorifying God means that He really gets something out of what is being sung, regardless of what people think. It's the attitude of a singer or songwriter, it is important that Christian songwriters love God, but are free to write songs about anything they want to. He only has to answer to God for his choices, not other people. I like to write songs about things which cause me to glimpse the worth of God. Sometimes that might be the ocean, sometimes it is love for my wife, sometimes it can be absurdly simple things. After all, we shouldn't search for a spiritually symbolic rationalization for ever activity we enter into. It is not evil to enjoy a good laugh or a hike in the Sierras for what they are. The more we understand these "ordinary" things, the more we see that they are not ordinary at all, but great things, created as such and simply taken for granted by us to the point that we call them ordinary."

How can we as Christians communicate our faith to the world effectively?

"We must learn to understand the worldviews of those around us and not be so smug in our separatismm especially in education. We must understand why the world believes the things it believes. We must go beyond the point of simply confirming the sin of every man - we must get specific, and use our minds like never before. We must care for people. If we don't do these things, we can't really offer any good criticism in their eyes -- we will only continue to condescend. Any parrot or chimpanzee can mimic what is heard or seen, but we as Christians in the 80's need to learn how to think for ourselves. When we begin to see God's Truth as the actual TRUTH, not just as something we know because we wrote it down in our notebooks, we will be able to carry our faith on to its proper conclusions. We will learn how to really love God and our neighbors, and ourselves."

Having spent the last two days listening to 'Into Thy Hands' (the words of Jesus on the cross) and 'Sanctified'...it has 'Genesis' written over it, yet NOT! My only disappointment, was not the music. Which is SUPERB!...Why did they not commission an artist to redo their covers for reissues. I mean something like YES!....their must is so full of delicious and delicate sounds...and needs complex covers...oh, how the eighties mentality tore up the details in the robotic commercial art...and bland..instead of beautiful, which this music is..if one can say so...Perhaps the word is complex, profound and filled with *obiviation.

*obiviation (is not a dictionary or urban word, it is from 'Katoikei's Jukebox of Words that just happen..sort of like talking in tongues' --- listen to the music and decide if it fits, but seeing as their is no apparent meaning it is then uniquely selected for 'THE AWAKENING'....'for on a clear day you can feel God's heart, giving light to all the earth' - the last track on 'InTO ThY HanDS' (thanks for this awakening)...Soli Deo Gloria!

Kerry Livgren - Seeds of Change

Like a volcano erupting on this very tiny island in space, called earth; Kerry Livgren 'lost in the forests' was found by the Son of God; the same who is the 'way' or 'pathway', the truth 'for the word that Jesus has spoken is that which will judge us in the last day', and 'life' - 'abundant and eternal'

Here is how Wikipedia introduces Kerry's first solo effort...

Seeds of Change was Kerry Livgren's first solo album. Released in 1980 while he still was a member of Kansas, three other members of the band appeared as guests (Steve Walsh, Phil Ehart and Robby Steinhardt). In 1996, Seeds of Change was reissued through Renaissance Records with a 21:24 long interview with Livgren as a bonus track.

Kerry also wrote a book, describing the journey that he had come leading up to the day when he asked 'Jesus' to come into his heart. It was also titled, 'Seeds of Change'.

I remember on the day when I bought the album, looking at the list of vocalists. Kerry only grunted on 'Whiskey Seed.'

In 1979, I stepped into the Christian Music shop for the last time. After getting rid of my entire music collection in July 1976, which amounted to a meagre 25 pre-recorded tapes and turned my back on the darkness.

At first, I could not listen to anything by musicians that sang out of another spirit, than Jesus Christ. In truth I had been so buried in the dead zone, that I was afraid of going back into it. At first all I would listen to was a p.r. tape by Dave and Dale Garrett (and I still do) titled 'Prepare Ye The Way - Volume 2', however a little at a time I opened up to the music that Christians were playing. I went from the mellow Pop Rock vibes of Larry Norman, and Randy Stonehill and scores of others (refer: My Jesus Music Quest) , until I had milked the Christian Music shop at the top of town, bone dry.

So it was that in 1979, just before Bob Dylan was 'Saved by Grace', and Dan Peek ( Dan when to heaven on July 24, 2011) learned that 'All Things Are Possible', that I asked the guy behind the counter if there was any Jesus music which was more complex than Resurrection Band. (blushes now thinking about how naive I was back then.)

He smiled and said that that was it. Now the shop was the only one in Cape Town of it's kind and so if that was that! I guess I would have to wait until some Christian began composing music that was of the standard that I had been used to before I had asked Jesus to come into my heart. However, it was on that same day, in that same shop, that I met a musician who told me all about this album:

Monolith is the sixth studio album, and seventh album overall, by American rock band Kansas, released in 1979 (see 1979 in music).

This album was largely influenced by The Urantia Book, reflecting an interest in the movement by bandmember Kerry Livgren before his conversion to Christianity.

The album initially sold about 800,000 copies, obtaining Gold status, but ultimately went Platinum in the early 1990s, and Kerry Livgren donated his platinum record to the Kansas State Historical Society[1]. Although this was Kansas' 3rd straight studio album to hit the Billboard Top 10, its sales were slow compared to its last few releases, and its one Top 40 hit, People of the Southwind, didn't last on the charts very long. The album was supported by a full scale North American arena tour, taking them to venues in major cities in places they had never played before. Further, a special promotional disc was released in Japan of highlights of the album mixed with earlier popular tracks, in anticipation of a small Japanese tour in 1980. Even more ambitious perhaps was the fact that 4 promotional music videos were shot for the album, even though MTV was still years away. While this album marks the end of Kansas's true commercial peak, the support surrounding the record was more sophisticated than at any time before or since. By the time their next record was released, two members had released solo albums, and not a single song from this record appeared in their live set. Indeed, the band rarely has played much of anything from this album live since the original Monolith tour, which initially featured all 8 songs played live.

According to Wikipedia's tribute to William Everet "Billy" Preston, he played on so many amazing albums, additional to his own. In particular, "Blood on the Tracks' by Bob Dylan (real name: Robert Allen Zimmerman) and "The Concert for Bangladesh" with George Harrisson, as well as such luminaries as Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Leon Rusell, Ravi Shankar....

'Not having heard, 'This Time Thru', their 1978 offering; I distinctly remember why I liked this album. It was ROCK! Their third album, 'This Ain't Hollywood' (1980), the vinyl of which I acquired a good few years ago, was a little disappointing. However, listening to them again, and in particular this album have aroused my curiosity and brought back a distinct memory of why I initially enjoyed their music. The truth is that by 1980, I was listening to more complex prog-rock, and the hook got in quite deep. There is some great drumming on 'Go tell them!!', as well as some great guitar riffin'. 'Bad Livin' has a great introduction, but begins to fizzle, and then a most pleasing divergence into piano from Eddie DeGarmo, and a mixture of textures. I have always loved piano, so the opening to 'Enchiridion', has totally got me! and flows beautifully into 'Long Distance Runner' sounding distinctly like 'Sweet Comfort Band' - Dana Key bringing up some solid lead guitar. The Steely Dan model is definitely present here. 'Keep your eye on the goal..long distance runner' 'Let Him Help You Today', continues with the sizzling guitar work from Dana Key. 'Blessed is the man who walks in Wisdom...' .. great lyrics!!!

'I Never Knew You' which is a very frightening statement, that Jesus spoke in regard to those who were 'None of His' and the bass work and drums were absolutely flawless on this track. After some serious head banging, this last track...is so beautiful. The gentle treatment of flute and gradual build up on this track is awesome. I have to listen to it again...(here are the words)

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb…The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. I found my face crinkling into a funny smile when I read this from, the 'fact' segment on Wikipedia....(enjoy the video now folks..lol)

DeGarmo & Key were the first Christian group to have a music video appear on MTV. The original video for the song "Six, Six, Six" was one of a number of videos that MTV pulled from rotation due to violent content. The purge was a public reaction to the U.S. Senate hearings on sex and violence in music. MTV had ironically misinterpreted the song "Six, Six, Six" as an anti-Christian statement. According to industry news reports at the time, MTV exec Sandra Sparrow was unaware that DeGarmo & Key were a Christian band when she included the video in a list of videos to be excised. An embarrassed MTV allowed DeGarmo & Key to submit a re-edited version, which was placed back into rotation. Removed from the re-edited video was a short scene of a man representing the Antichrist being set on fire.

I did not find a website for 'Bethlehem' but I am sure if you look around you should be able to find the vinyl, or a CD..somewhere on the Webs.

This will be a random posting, and not a sign that this blog is going to morph into yet another Mp3 Jesus Music blog...or worse a 'Jesus Only Cult'. But seeing as I have a definite passion for the music of those early 'Jesus People'; not only in the 'USA', but all over our globe, and as you are probably aware, this music began long, long, long before the Jesus Movement. ( 'Genesis Chapter 1' )

I feel a chorus coming on..no not Kumbaya...but...

All over the world, there's a might revelation, of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Wow! That was certainly a blessing. Well, for me at least.

Now to the matter of 'Bethlehem'

What is the significance of 'Bethlehem' ? Well, apart from being a band, it is also the name of a place, that held great significance, and around about Christmas time every years we begin to remember a faint rumbling of an event that took place in Bethlehem. Let me jolt your memory...

Let's have a look at the Old Testament...Micah (prophet) Chapter 5 verse 2

'But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.'

For those who took note, this was fulfilled...New Testament...Luke Chapter 2

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; because (he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher: she was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of about fourscore and and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

I don't know what Bible you use, but I have been using this 'version' for years, so it is easy for me to enjoy.

There is so much to glean in this wonderful account of the event that took place, slightly over 2000 years ago, but I will not spoil it for you by attempting to explain what is available in common speech in so many languages.

After listening to Larry Norman talking (preaching) and singing (ministering in song), I decided it might be a kewl idea to write out all the words, for those who cannot hear, but can read. 'Jesus loves you'

'A lot of people are afraid of the nuclear weapons, in America and Russia and other countries; they fear that someday we might have a war, which will destroy the earth and kill all of the people on the earth. So young people march for 'Peace' in many countries and I know that some of these young people are Christians, and they don't want the world to be destroyed by nuclear weapons either. But I don't know that the world will ever be destroyed by the bomb. I don't believe that it will. I think it's just another thing that you can worry about, if you want to worry and you don't want to have faith that God is really in control of men's lives.
The Bible says that someday Jesus is coming back to earth, to take those who believe in Him, home to heaven, to be with Him. If this is true, if this verse is telling the truth; then there' going to have to be and earth for Him to come back to. So instead of worrying about the bombs, and worrying about wars, we should be worrying about our sin; the war that is within us and the bomb in our heart that goes off in our heart everytime we turn away from God, to fulfil some pleasure that we know is wrong. That's the real war on earth; ..is sin.
If you can march for peace, if you want to but it will never achieve peace. There will never be peace on earth, until Christ returns and establishes his peace.'

'There will be wars and rumours of wars, and there'll be rumours of peace; and some will believe that a man can establish peace. And some will look for 'a man of peace.' Henry Kissinger was known as a man of peace, but he didn't bring peace to the world. The Pope is know as 'a man of peace', but he has not brought peace to the world. Christ will bring peace, ... but there will be wars. Armies will fight against armies. People will die. Believers in Christ will be torchured for their beliefs, because the world will hate Christians. The world will think that Christians are insane, and that they're an evil menace to society; that the only true friends of the earth, are not Christians but are people who are afraid of war and do anything to live in peace. The Christians will be considered enemies of the world. Friends of the world will be those people who recieve the mark of the beast on their hand, and say that they will not serve God; but that they will serve the earth. That they will love one another... in a legal way, by helping one another, by working together, by wearing the number; so that they all know who the real, true! lover's of earth are...and that the Christians who refuse to take the mark are against the earth and should be killed, and torchured for their false beliefs and a God that does not exist. This will come true in our country. It's already come true in other countries. In Russia, if you believe in God, you can be put in prison. In China you can be killed if you believe in God. This is nothing new, it's been happening for a long time, and it will happen here, it will happen here, it shall happen here.'

At last it is time to sample the 'Jesus Music' from http://www.one-way.org All the music featured under this new title 'Jesus Music Quest III' is already given as a free download, so all I am doing is presenting it with a bit more detail about the composers, singers etc. etc. plus covers, current site links etc. So as it says in the Good Book, 'Taste and see that the Lord is good,' ..Yes, that's right Jesus Music is a refreshing stream of living water, ....not a dried up old well.

I have to start somewhere with this really prolific composer/singer/musician and producer, 'BENNY HESTER'. So let's start with, "When God Ran" - the story of the Progigal son, and the Father who RAN and wrapped His arms around his son.

His recording of “When God Ran” is the longest running number one song in Contemporary Christian Music history, number one for thirteen weeks, at which time the song held the number one spot on the AC and CHR Charts. Simultaneously Benny’s recording of “Secret Thoughts” made it's way to the number one slot on the ROCK Charts, causing him to sweep the top spot on all three. “When God Ran” continues to be rerecorded by many groups and in many musical genres, making it to the top of the charts repeatedly. Benny Hester really loves to rock, and his website will certainly make that as clear as daylight.

'Out of the wreck I rise, scales have fallen from my eyes. Out of the wreck I rise, up to where the mercy lies, up I rise.' (from 'Out of the Wreck'). Is plain and simple genuis and has the kind of energy that makes me a firm believer.

'Storm on the Sun', is simply profound and grips my spirit and inspires me. It is not the usual boring Hillstar styles, that seems to permeate 'Jesus Pop Music'. This song has depth, tonality that shows his roots.

Born in Waco, Texas, Benny began studying classical music at age four and continued his studies through high school with European teachers and musical innovators John and Martha Reuther. He was among the first to master John Reuther’s futuristic chromatic “checkerboard” designed keyboard and one of a handful of musicians to become expert on the instrument, playing public performances to demonstrate it’s attributes over the standard keyboard. 'Peace' is the last track I am listening to on his iPod at his official website; and it is right on. Reminds me of what Jesus said, "My peace I leave with you...." There is a cry for peace on the planet, but this peace can only be found inside Jesus Christ, not in our leaders, church leaders, gospel singers etc. etc.('scuse my sermonizing)

In this present incarnation, his energy reminds me of Sir Cliff Richard during his overt gospel phase. He would rock up a storm of enthusiam. (entheos - Greek - in GOD, or my Modern rendering, 'INTO JESUS')

There is a little mystery surrounding this first album...

Maher and Bill Porter, Elvis Presley’s recording and sound engineer, brought Elvis’s band to record with Benny for his first album. The band included Ronnie Tutt, James Burton, Glenn Hardin and Jerry Scheff, as well as Larry Mahoberac and Joe Osborn.

The finished masters and packaged albums, ready for record company distribution, were lost in the studio-warehouse fire that destroyed United Recording. Benny’s first album was never released. Only a few albums survived the fire, ending up in the hands of collectors. (...read more..)

Review:- This second album really took me back to the first time I heard 'Seals and Crofts'. The album is sweet and tender and endearing and memorable. I even got a ghost of 'The Bellamy Brothers' and of course 'The Doobie Brothers'. 'We all know He's coming again', is probably my favourite track, and I am certainly going to feature it at 'Jesus Music Global'.

Benny’s first single, “Jesus Came Into My Life”, was a break-through recording, becoming the first contemporary rock song to be universally accepted and widely played across all Christian Radio formats. (..read more...)
