It is the homeland of the Nattukottai Chettiars called as Nagarathar, a prosperous business and traders community. Their success and wealth reflected in the houses. Chettinad is known for these 19th-century mansions. Chettinad cuisine with bold and fiercy flavours are from this land. Athangudi tiles in lovely florals and colours made from sand and glass are another specialty. Athangudi's another fame is the Set Basket which is very convenient and useful to carry and store things. The cotton saris woven here are called kandangi. They are comfortable to wear in summer and comes with lovely designs.
