JavaScripts Page Refresh/Reload

"Page Redirection" for techniques of redirecting or forwarding one page to another.

There are times when the web-author would like their web-page to automatically refresh (or reload) at specified intervals. This is often useful when the page contains time sensitive information.

We discuss three versions:

    JavaScript Refresh - preferred method
    JavaScript Button Refresh
    meta-tag - provided for reference but not the preferred method.

JavaScript Refresh

The preferred page refresh/reload method uses a JavaScript technique that will replace the current page with each refresh in the visitor's page history.

This version uses an under-utilized method of dealing with cross browser and old version browser compatibility. It defines multiple JavaScript code blocks, where each JavaScript version block redefines the same function. Only the last version block that is supported by the browser will be used. So older browsers will use the "JavaScript" block, while later browsers will use either the "JavaScript1.1" or "JavaScript1.2" block depending upon the browser's capabilities. If the browser does not support JavaScript or has it disabled, the "noscript" block will be used.

We do use the "refresh" meta-tag as a backup method to the JavaScript.

A similar JavaScript will refresh/reload the page when the visitor clicks on a link, on an image/button, or a form button. In similar fashion we use the technique that will replace the current page with each refresh in the visitor's page history.

The biggest problem with the "refresh" meta-tag method of page-refresh is that it can add to the visitor's page-history on various versions of browsers. This means that for each automatic page refresh/reload your site visitor must select the browser's back button. This potentially can be a considerable bother to your visitors as well as a confusion.

1. Identify Your Business Goal

You can slide elements, animate elements, and even stop animations in mid-sequence. To slide elements up or

The syntax for showing, hiding an element (or toggling show/hide) is:

Remember that the "toggle" command will change whatever state the element currently has, and the parameters are both optional. The first parameter indicates the speed of the showing/hiding. If no speed is set, it will occur instantly, with no animation. A number for "speed" represents the speed in milliseconds. The second parameter is an optional function that will run when the command is finished executing.

You can also specifically choose to fade an element in or out, which is always done by animation:

To fade an element only partially, either in or out:

jQuery allows you to easily add, remove, and toggle CSS classes, which comes in handy for a variety of practical
uses. Here are the different syntaxes for accomplishing this:

$("div").addClass("content"); // adds class "content" to all

elements
$("div").removeClass("content"); // removes class "content" from all

elements
$("div").toggleClass("content");// toggles the class "content" on all

elements (adds it if it doesn't exist, //and removes it if it does)

You can also check to see if a selected element has a particular CSS class, and then run some code if it does. You
would check this using an if statement. Here is an example:
if ($("#myElement").hasClass("content")) {
// do something here
}

You could also check a set of elements (instead of just one), and the result would return "true" if any one of the
elements contained the class.

Manipulating CSS Styles with jQuery:

Running Code Unobtrusively When the DOM is Ready

The first thing you need to be up and running with jQuery is what’s called the “document ready” handler. Pretty much everything you code in jQuery will be contained inside one of these. This accomplishes two things: First, it ensures that the code does not run until the DOM is ready.

This confirms that any elements being accessed are actually in existence, so the script won’t return any errors. Second, this ensures that your code is unobtrusive. That is, it’s separated from content (XHTML) and presentation (CSS). Here is what it looks like:

Not too long ago I wrote an article for Six Revisions called “Getting Started with jQuery” that covered some important things (concept-wise) that beginning jQuery developers should know.

This article is the complete opposite; there’s no concepts, no principles, and very little lecturing -- just some straight example code with brief descriptions demonstrating what you can do with jQuery.

This fast-paced tutorial should be able to get beginners up and running with jQuery very quickly, while also providing a good overview of what jQuery is capable of (although jQuery’s capabilities go far beyond this beginning tutorial).

Keep in mind that this tutorial is just a bunch of straightforward, superficial code examples and very brief explanations for beginners who want to avoid all the jargon and complexities. But I still highly recommend that all beginners get past this stuff by means of a good book, some more in-depth tutorials online, or by using the jQuery documentation.

Does Smoking Make You Drink More?

People may drink more alcohol if they’re smoking cigarettes between sips, a new study shows. Smoking and drinking often go together, though not all smokers drink and not all drinkers smoke. Researchers from Texas A&M University studied interactions between nicotine, which is found in cigarettes, and alcohol.

They studied adult female rats, but the findings may apply to people. “Cigarette smoking appears to promote the consumption of alcohol,” says researcher Wei-Jung Chen, PhD, in a journal news release. Chen and two other Texas A&M researchers — Scott Parnell, PhD, and James West, PhD — tested alcohol and various nicotine doses on the rats.

The researchers found that when they sent alcohol straight into the rats’ stomach via a tube, the rats had lower blood alcohol levels if they had also gotten nicotine. “This may encourage drinkers to drink more to achieve the pleasurable or expected effect,” says Chen. Nicotine may somehow affect the stomach’s handling of alcohol, the researchers note. They figured that out by repeating their experiment with one change.

They injected alcohol into the rats’ abdominal cavity (the space surrounding the abdominal organs) instead of piping it into the rats’ stomach. Nicotine had no effect on blood alcohol levels under those conditions, the study shows. Chen plans to study interactions between alcohol and other drugs. Meanwhile, he says in the news release that “the current findings should be a warning to the general public regarding the danger of abusing multiple drugs, since the pharmacokinetic interactions among these substances are often unpredictable and injurious.” Click here for the full story as reported on the webmd.com site.

Austin DWI Attorney | Texas DWI Legislation Update Part 2

This is part 2 of my posts on an update of Texas DWI related legislation considered by the 82nd Texas Legislature that affect an Austin DWI Attorney and others. Here is Part 1 of my Texas DWI law update. House Bill 1199 was passed and will become Texas law on September 1, 2011. HB 1199 increases the penalties for Texas DWI convictions where the driver’s alcohol concentration was 0.15 or more.

For DWI offenses occurring on or after September 1, 2011, what was a class B misdemeanor DWI (first offense DWI) now becomes a class A misdemeanor if the driver’s alcohol concentration was 0.15 or more. And a DWI is a 2nd degree felony if the driver caused “serious bodily injury to another in the nature of a traumatic brain injury that results in a persistent vegetative state.” Senate Bill 1787 was passed and becomes law on September 1, 2011.

This bill includes in the DIC-24 warning language that an officer may apply for a warrant to withdraw the driver’s blood if the driver refuses to submit a specimen.

As the 82nd Legislature winds down their special summer session, I thought I would take some time to write about various bills relating to Texas DWI that an Austin DWI Attorney and others. There were a number of DWI related bills considered by the legislature, so I will probably break this up into two posts.

House Bill 189 was passed by the House but not by the Senate. Generally, HB 189 would have allowed a form of deferred adjudication community supervision for first time DWI convictions in Texas.

As the law now stands in Texas, the only types of crimes that a person cannot bet deferred adjudication for are DWI, Flying While Intoxicated, and Boating While Intoxicated related crimes; certain sexual crimes where the defendant has previous convictions; and drug offenses in a drug free zone where the defendant has previously been convicted of a similar crime.

Yes, you can be convicted of murder and still be eligible for deferred adjudication, but not if you are convicted of DWI. You can be convicted of certain sexual offenses and still be eligible for deferred adjudication, but not if you are convicted of DWI.

Maybe this will change in the future, but not at least until the legislature meets again in 2014. House Bill 1507 was not passed by either the House or Senate. HB 1507 would have allowed non-lawyer magistrates in counties with populations under 100,000 to issue search warrants.

Welcome back to my series of posts on Texas ALR Hearings and Occupational Licenses. But sometimes in ALR hearings, Judges rule that the State has proven that the officer had reasonable suspicion to stop or probable cause to arrest the driver for DWI, and that the driver refused to provide a specimen or had an alcohol concentration greater than 0.08.

How long the driver’s license is suspended for depends on whether the case was a refusal or failure, and whether the driver has had alcohol or drug related contact within 10 years before the date of arrest. Contact an Austin DWI Attorney to discuss the possible length of your suspension.

ALR SUSPENSION LENGTHS If an ALR Judge orders a suspension and the driver has had no alcohol or drug related law enforcement contact during the 10 years immediately preceding the date of arrest for DWI and the driver refused to provide a blood or breath specimen, the license suspension length is 180 days.

If the driver provided a specimen and it showed an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more, the suspension length is 90 days. If the ALR judge orders a suspension and the driver has had 1 or more alcohol or drug related law enforcement contacts in the 10 years before the arrest date, and the driver refused to provide a blood or breath specimen, the suspension length is 2 years. If the driver did provide a specimen but had an alcohol concentration of 0.08, the suspension length is 1 year.

GoogleBar Options

The GoogleBar allows you to achieve similar functionality to what you would get by using the Google AJAX Search API to perform a Local Search, but provides a few advantages:
1. If you just need the basic functionality, all you need is one extra command in your code: map.enableGoogleBar().
2. You can use it without having agreed to the Google AJAX Search API Terms of Use, which seem to not allow you to modify the results.

The Maps API GoogleBar options provide facilities which you can use to:
1.Modify or replace the text, images, or other content of the Google Search Results
2.Changing the order in which the Google Search Results appear
3.Intermix Search Results from sources other than Google
4.Intermix other content such that it appears to be part of the Google Search Results
5.Modify, replace or otherwise disable the functioning of links All of which would be prohibited if you were using the Google AJAX Search API.

Options The possible entries in the googleBarOptions are:

onGenerateMarkerHtmlCallback function Function to be called when the info window is about to be opened on one of the results. Must return the (modified) html element object to be used for the info window contents.

The first six options are fairly straight forward, but the callback functions need a bit of explanation: onIdleCallback This function is called when the GoogleBar is opened for the first time, and called again whenever the previous results are cleared. It is not called if a second search is executed without the user explicitly clearing the previous results. No parameters are passed. onSearchCompleteCallback This function is called when the search is complete, before the results are plotted.

There is one parameter, a reference to a GlocalSearch object, see Official Class reference Of particular interest is the .results[] array, which is an array of GlocalResult() objects, see Official Class reference You can read that information, but also, because it's a reference, you can modify the contents of the .result[] array. The .html will have already been calculated, so changing things like the .results[i].city won't affect what gets displayed in the info window.

If you want to change the info window contents at this point, then you need to change the .results[i].html.innerHTML. onMarkersSetCallback This function is called when the API has created markers corresponding to the search results. There is one parameter, an array of anonymous Objects. Each Object in the array has two properties, .result is a GlocalResult object and .marker is a GMarker.

onGenerateMarkerHtmlCallback This function is called whenever an info window is about to be opened. The parameters are: The GMarker The HTMLElement which is intended to become the info window contents The GlocalResult The function must return a HTMLElement which will become the actual info window contents.

Simple result filtering example This example uses onSearchCompleteCallback to filter the search results, reducing the number of results to no more than two. Simple info window modification This example uses onGenerateMarkerHtmlCallback to read information from the GMarker and from the GlocalResult to modify the contents of the info window at the time that the info window is opened.

Advanced example: add ELabels This advanced example uses all the GoogleBar Options. It displays an Elabel alongside each marker, and in order to do that it uses the callback functions like this: onIdleCallback uses map.clearOverlays() to remove the old ELabels onSearchCompleteCallback uses map.clearOverlays() to remove the old ELabels onMarkersSetCallback reads the location of each GMarker and the titleNoFormatting of each GlocalResult and uses that information to create an ELabel. onGenerateMarkerHtmlCallback hides the ELabel corresponding to the marker on which the info window is opening.

Preview Gmail's New Interface

Gmail found an interesting way to test the new Google+ interface: using themes. If you go to the Themes page and select "Preview" or "Preview (dense)", you'll be able to try the upcoming Gmail interface. "Why two themes? Our new interface will eventually expand dynamically to accommodate different screen sizes and user preferences, but until then you can pick the information density that you prefer," explains Google.

The new interface uses the same color scheme from Google Maps, Google Calendar and Google Search, the same gray header and blue search button. Since Gmail has two search buttons, Google had to use labels to distinguish between the button that lets you search your message and the Google Search button. The interface is cleaner, since it uses a lot of white space to separate the different sections.

Even if you don't enable the new themes, you'll still see some subtle design changes: many links are now buttons (navigation links, "Back to message list"), the "Refresh" button uses a familiar icon, the "More actions" button changed the label to "More" and Gmail's footer is much cleaner. These are just the first UI updates, so we'll see many other changes until "Preview" becomes the default theme.

Gmail is a complex application and it's difficult to simplify the interface and make it more consistent, especially when you consider the numerous Gmail Labs features and themes. "You can expect some updated themes that embody the same design principles but are better suited to working in a dark environment, use a different color palette, or include the illustrations that we know many of you love to see around your inbox," mentions Gmail's blog.

It should be obvious right now that Google+ is more than a social network or a social layer, it's a Google-wide initiative that affects both the form and the functionality of Google's applications. Programming with php in a local environment

I have two files, main.php and register.php that I've been editing. I renamed their extensions to .txt so that you can view them here. If I had left them as .php's, they'll try to run when you click on the filenames. You'll see that they are nothing fancy, just an initial draft to get you started. So, now I'd like to show you how to execute those files.

I told you my directory name at the beginning of the post. So, type into your browser: "localhost/eclipseworkspace/projectX/main.php" If I had named it "index.php" instead of main, then you could skip the filename. This code shows how you can validate the fields of the form in PHP, and give the user an error message if something is wrong.

It works fine except for one problem: if there are multiple errors, such as a zero length username AND a zero length password, then only one error message is displayed to the user. In this case it's the password error message, since that check occurs later in the code.

To fix this, we can change the code to keep an array of error messages. Here's how we'll do that: 1. Instead of setting $error=false, lets instead create an empty array, and let's make the variable plural $errors instead of $error. Of course, you know that a compiler, or in this case the PHP interpreter, does not really distinguish between singular and plural form.

It just helps make the variable names more meaningful for us: In this case where it's just one line of HTML to be output, that's not a bad way to do it. But when sending long stretches of HTML I think the format where you jump back and forth between PHP and HTML is the way to do. You end up with a file that looks more like HTML code with PHP sprinkled in, rather than an onslaught of PHP echo statements.

That might be hard to visualize with just a small example like this, but if you code up an entire page you'll see what I mean. The idea of echo'ing all output from a PHP program would be similar to writing a C program where you printf all the HTML. Come to think of it, you could actually write all this pure C. You could have an Apache module that links in your C code as a shared library.

It would handle the TCP connection from the browser, doing printf's to send the HTML and other content to the browser. In other words, you'd be generating the HTML from your C program entirely. All the things that we are doing with PHP, you could do it with C instead in which case you would not need to switch between PHP and HTML. However, it'd be more complex. Say you needed to make a change, with PHP you just edit the file and you are done; with C, you have the extra step of compiling which will slow you down. Then you have to restart the web server process.

How to Install WordPress

1. Download WordPress The very first thing you’ll want to do is download a copy of the software. So, go to the WordPress site here, and look for the link that says “DOWNLOAD.ZIP.” You should see it on the right side of the page with a dark blue background. When you see the link, click on it, and save the file to your desktop so it’s easy to find going forward.

2. Unzip the Folder After you download the program, you’ll need to unzip the files into their own folder on your desktop. Most computers have a built-in zip/unzip application when you buy them, and if you’re not sure about your system, right-click on the file you just downloaded, and look for the menu option that says “Extract All …” Select that option if you see it. If you don’t have an unzip feature already installed, you can download a free program called Stuffit Expander (for PC or Mac).

3. Set Up Your FTP Program FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and an FTP program will allow you to copy files from your own computer to your web hosting account. There are many FTP programs available, and one of the more popular ones is free program called FileZilla. You can download it here.

4. Get Your FTP Access Information You’ll need to enter this information into your FTP program to access and upload files to your web host. Specifically, you’ll need to enter the the domain name, username and password for your FTP account. You can get this information from your web host if you don’t have it already.

5. Set Up Your MySQL Database With Your Web Host This isn’t as scary as it may sound. Well, not if you have a good web host. You can usually find a link in your web hosting control panel to set up a MySQL database. Once the database is set up, you’ll need the database name, database password, database username and database hostname The hostname is usually “localhost,” but not always, so check with your web host to be sure. If you use Hostgator, it is localhost.

6. Enter Your Database Information into Your Config File Remember when you downloaded and unzipped the WordPress program on your computers desktop? Open that folder, and you’ll see another folder labeled “WordPress.” Open that folder, and find a file named wp-config-sample. Open this file in a text editor such as Notepad or Wordpad.

When you open the file you’ll see some text, much of which looks like gibberish, but it’s not.
Look specifically for the lines that read: // ** MySQL settings - You can get this info from your web host ** // /** The name of the database for WordPress */ define('DB_NAME', 'putyourdbnamehere'); /** MySQL database username */ define('DB_USER', 'usernamehere'); /** MySQL database password */ define('DB_PASSWORD', 'yourpasswordhere'); /** MySQL hostname */ define('DB_HOST', 'localhost'); This is the place to enter the database information you saved from the previous step.

So whatever the database name is, enter that information in place of ‘putyourdbnamehere.’ Just be sure to leave the ‘ marks before and after as it appears above. Do the same for the DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD and DB_HOST. When you’re done, save the file, but save it as wp-config.php rather than wp-config-sample.

7. Upload WordPress to Your Server Okay. We’re in the homestretch. The next thing you want to do is upload the entire program from your computer to you host’s server. So, first, open your FTP program and connect to your host’s server. Back in step 5, you tracked down your FTP information.

If you haven’t already entered it into your FTP program, go ahead and do that now. Again, you’ll need to enter you domain name, your username and your password. After you enter the information, go ahead and connect to your host’s server. At this point, you’ll need to make a decision about where you’ll place the program.

You can put it in – either – the root directory of your host server or a sub-directory. Personally, I place mine in a subdirectory because I run several different websites on the same server, and it just makes things a lot easier by keeping them separate. After you make your decision, go ahead and upload all the files and directories located in the WordPress folder you unzipped to you desktop, excluding the folder itself.

8. Run the Install Script If you installed WordPress in the root directory of your server, open your web browser and type the following: http://www.mydomain.com/wp-admin/install.php (replace “mydomain.com” with your own domain name). If you installed WordPress in a sub-directory, open your web browser and type the following: http://www.mydomain.com/subdirectory/wp-admin/install.php (replace “mydomain.com” with your own domain name and “subdirectory” with the name of the sub-directory you created).

After you go to this page, WordPress will do the rest. Just follow the onscreen directions, and then you’ll be all done.
