Visvodaya institutions celebrate diamond jubilee

The Visvodaya Jawahar Bharati educational institutions celebrated their diamond jubilee on successful completion of 60 years here on Sunday. Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Daggubati Purandeswari, former Vice-chancellor of Vikrama Simhapuri University, R Visweswara Rao, and Kavali MLA B Mastan Rao were the chief guests at the function presided over by HMTV and The Hans India Chief Editor K Ramachandra Murthy.

Purandeswari was presented with the membership of Visvodaya institutions and felicitated on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, she said it was a great honour for her to be felicitated by the same institution which had honoured her father N T Rama Rao earlier. She exhorted the students to excel in their studies and use every opportunity to sharpen their skills and enhance their knowledge and strive to bring glory to the country. She desired that India transformed itself into a country of opportunities for all.

Ramachandra Murthy lauded the pioneering role played by Dodla Ramachandra Reddy who founded Jawahar Bharati College which produced several great intellectuals in the mould of ideals and aspirations of Jawahar Lal Nehru.

He lauded the decision of the institution to felicitate Purandeswari who was treading in the footsteps of her father. He advised the parents not to put too much pressure on their children for high scores and said the students should be enlightened on the basis of the three language formula.

Gitanjali School correspondent murdered

Mekala Yandi Reddy, 45 years, correspondent of Gitanjali English Medium school, was found mudered on Tuesday i.e., 26th June 2012 afternoon at his residence in Kavali town.

The police said that Yanadi Reddy's throat was cut and his body was found at his residential flat at Sai Veda Residency in the II town police station premesis. The neighbours providedd the information to the police within a hours of the murder.

Yanadi Reddy was running Gitanjali English Medium school located in the Cooperative colony, Kavali.

Kavali in the grip of fear as psycho is on the prowl

Police have deployed 30 teams, while residents have formed squads to nab the crazy youth. Recently a youth was nabbed and locals assumed him to be the psycho, but the cops ruled out his role in the attacks. Residents of Shantinagar, Kacherimitta, Balakrishnareddy Nagar, Ramamurthypet and Chritianpet in Kavali said the youth hides himself behind thick bushes and attacks young girls and women while they are bathing.

He tried to assault a young Muslim girl in the area on Friday and when the residents came to her rescue, he climbed trees and jumped across buildings and walls and ran away.

Sources said about 40 incidents have been reported in the recent past in which women and girls have been harassed.

Kavali DSP A Hymavathi said they were keeping a watch and expressed hope that he will be nabbed soon.

AITA National Series tennis tournament for under-16

Daniel Raj and V. Archana, both of Hyderabad are winners of the recent Visvodaya Institute of Technology and Science (VITS)-All India Tennis Association (AITA) super series championships for boys and girls under 16 years at Kavali.

Dr. C. Rajasekhar Reddy, chief orthopaedic surgeon, Vijaya Health Centre, Chennai, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes, while Wing Commander (retd) I.P.C. Reddy, presided over the valedictory function.

Cyclonic storm Laila effect

The Andhra Pradesh coast especially Kavali may escape severe battering by cyclonic storm Laila that is showing signs of weakening before hitting the seashore. However, heavy rains with gales, which killed 10 people, brought normal life to a halt in the coastal region.

Weather officials forecast that the cyclonic storm may not cause severe damage when it crosses the coast between Kavali and Kakinada, close to Machilipatnam in south coastal Andhra Pradesh by Thursday afternoon.

The cyclonic storm lay centred at about 120 km northeast of Nellore, 100 km southeast of Ongole and 120 km south of Machilipatnam. It is likely to move in a northwesterly to northerly direction and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Kavali and Kakinada.

The strong gales uprooted trees bringing transport services to a halt in several parts of Nellore, Praksam, Guntur and Krishna districts. Hundreds of villages remained under darkness as the gales with a speed of 65-70 kmph disrupted electricity supply system. Mango, banana and other horticulture crops over thousands of acres in the coastal districts were damaged.

Udayagiri Fort Located 68 km from Kavali. This is the site of a mighty fortress built by the Vijayanagar kings in the 14 century. A towering peak reaching a height of 994 m (3,261 ft) can be seen here, which is called Sanjiva Hill because a wide variety of medicinal herbs grow on it. Several ancient Pallava and Chola temples, remarkable for their architecture are worth a visit. The fort is located on the hills of Udayagiri. The hill rises to a height of 3,079 ft (938 m) above the sea level. It consists of eleven fortresses, 8 on the hill and 3 below. It covers an area of about seven miles. The existing fortifications reveal Islamic features. It was the stronghold of the Gajapatis of Orissa till Krishna Deva Raya annexed it. During the rule of the Gajapathis and the Vijayanagar Rulers, this Town grew to great splendour. The ruins of 365 Temples found in the Town reflected the sculputure and archetecture of various periods.Sufi Saint belonging to the 18th Century. Rahamathulla Nayab Rasool got absorbed in the higher selfhere. Every year the Sandal Festival is celebreated on the 26th of Rabi-UI-Aval month.
