YMCA International House @ One Orchard: A Hotel-Like Hostel In the Heart of Singapore

YMCA International House @ One Orchard

Though essentially tagged as a hostel, YMCA International House offers hotel-like service comparable to what I had experienced at the JICA Osaka International Center (OSIC) in Japan- just without the bathtub.

For starters, their lobby had that sort of convention-like feel that was both charming and unassuming.

The surrounding areas and hallway were spotlessly clean which somehow became a prelude to Singaporean culture at its finest.

Though I really really love durian, I'm not at all surprised that YMCA had this sign plastered on one of its walls. Just a few days after our stay here, I saw a similar sign at Piccolo Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

Once again, I got that strange feeling of deja vu because it bore a striking resemblance to my room at JICA OSIC- fairly small but still homey and clean beyond compare.

The bathroom was so clean it somehow glowed!

Oh yes. The TV worked perfectly!

We mainly lived off our suitcase so we weren't able to use the cabinet that much.

The best thing about YMCA International House was that accommodations included free buffet brekkie during our entire stay.

My boys were clearly excited to dig into the buffet brekkie that day.

One downside would have to be that the breakfast menu didn't change a bit during our four day stay. What was worth raving about was how kind the staff members were!

Although Ren and Bala came with Rolandito-my bro-in-law and fellow blogger- to the pool area, I believe Rolandito was the only one who got to try it. I on the other hand was still sleepy at the time so I just asked Bala to snap some photos for me.

If ever we would come back to Singapore, I would most definitely book a room at YMCA International House once again. For starters, it's just walking distance to the Asian Food Channel (AFC) Studio, Charlie Brown Cafe & 313@Somerset, and practically a stone's throw away from the National Museum of Singapore which I intend to explore over and over again.

Besides, I wasn't able to enroll in their K-Pop Class too which is a good enough reason to come back once more.

Just a few hours ago, Jessica Sanchez gave three powerhouse performances at the Season Finale of American Idol which revealed her versatility, vocal artistry and soul to the fore.

For the first round, Jessica delivered a near flawless interpretation of a Whitney Houston original, "I Have Nothing" which was chosen for her by Simon Fuller, one of the show's creators and executive producers.

When asked about their opinions, Randy was the first to say that Jessica won the round to which JLo later on agreed to.

The second round however brought mixed reactions from the three judges, with only Steven left saying that the round belonged to Jessica in her moving interpretation of "The Prayer."

For the final round, Jessica picked "Change Nothing" as her final song of the night and her would be single if ever she becomes the next American Idol.

Sadly, all three judges didn't like her choice of song and gave the round to Phillip with his interpretation of Greg Holden's "Home" which even earned for him a standing ovation!

It Turns Out That Filipinos From Anywhere In The World Can Vote For Jessica Sanchez Thru Facebook! (Updated)

Since we now live in a flat world according to Tomas Friedman, it turns out that Filipinos from anywhere in the world, including us here in the Philippines, can vote for American Idol contestant Jessica Sanchez via Facebook!

Here's how:

1. Go to the American Idol Online Voting Facebook App.

2. Simply press GO TO APP and then ALLOW.

3. According to my blogger friend salmoncat, she heard from The Morning Rush with Chico and Delamar that the voting window for Filipinos residing in the Philippines happens this coming Wednesday, May 23, from 9 to 11 AM.

However, when you go to the American Idol Website, online voting via Facebook is strictly for those within the Continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands which is perhaps one of the reasons why Patrick Villavencio of Interaksyon.com was led to write Voting for Jessica Outside the US Is Cheating? which received mixed comments, mostly exasperated ones, from Filipino netizens.

No matter what your stand is on this particular issue, we can't deny the fact that Filipinos around the globe are rooting for Jessica to win especially now that she is up against a clear favorite, Philip Phillips, who has never been on the bottom three during the entire season.

What I strongly believe is that even though Jessica doesn't become the next American Idol, her AI album will most certainly be a hit! I also won't be surprised to find out that record companies will be fighting their way after that to signing her up under their label.

For Mother's Day, we queued up at Conti's Trinoma for some delish takeouts. It was our first time doing so and was sort of surprised to be handed down the roll number slip with 50 written all over it. It was only 1PM and the line was unbelievably long! After waiting it out for almost thirty minutes, we went inside the resto to place our order.

Since Conti's bestselling Mango Bravo was already sold out at the time, the kind staff suggested their Peach Walnut Torte which according to her resembled my first choice to a tee. She was absolutely correct! Except for the mangoes, this particular cake has the same crunchy sansrival-like cake interspersed with rich cream, decadent peaches dotted with exciting walnuts all over. Anyone with a self-confessed sweet tooth will fall in love with this cake selection.

This particular pasta is my absolute favorite! I'd like to echo what I've already mentioned in my previous post about Conti's:

"The wonderful texture of the angel hair pasta is fused beautifully with fresh tomatoes, black olives, capers, a hint of anchovies and a sprinkle of olive oil for garnish. The tangy saltiness of the sauce cut through the fat for a surprisingly light and delightful taste."

Bubble Bath Bar Matchups: SEPHORA Effervescent Cube & LUSH Pop In the Bath Bubble Bar

During a rare visit to Sephora Starhill in Kuala Lumpur, I made sure to purchase some affordable bubble bath bars which I thought were perfect companions to our Cebu sojourn scheduled just a few days in between each other.

A kind beauty consultant from Sephora Starhill suggested the Sephora Effervescent Cubes which according to her would work best with their body oil. Since I was on a budget, I just bought the bath cubes and ditched the body oil.

Fast forward to Cebu. As soon as we got settled at Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort, I took the three Sephora Effervescent Cubes on a test drive.

At first, I was disappointed that the cubes didn't produce a massive amount of bubbles which I was dying to see. What is a bubble bath without bubbles, right?

A thick milky foam emerged instead which slowly enveloped the whole tub. I soon found out that what the Sephora Effervescent Cubes lacked in bubble production, they greatly compensated with topnotch skin nourishing capability.

I really felt that my skin became two notches softer after the soak! I can't help but regret not buying the body oil which I thought would have produced an even greater result. Another thing worth raving about was the musk almond scent which I found both sweet and soothing.

LUSH Pop In the Bath Bubble Bar

I first heard about this particular product from R & R and have been quite intrigued by it ever since. A few days before our Cebu trip, I dropped by LUSH at SM North The Block and purchased two bath bubble bars.

A peek at the Lush Philippines Website revealed that this particular bath bubble bar consists of mandarin oil and orange blossom absolute with a chipper little flower on top for an added twist. Just like other LUSH products, this bubble bar wasn't tested on animals.

Since it was my first time using this particular bubble bar, I must admit that I wasn't able to use it properly.

After peeling the wrapper, I simply threw it into the tub filled with lukewarm water.

It settled on one side of the tub and took forever to disintegrate.

What I didn't know at the time was that for better bubble production, I should have crumbled the bar under running warm water with the faucet turned to the max for an even greater water pressure.

Anyway, here's how the tub looked like after the bubble bar disintegrated and myself whipping up some waves in it.

What I loved about the LUSH Pop in the Bath Bubble Bar was its delicate vanilla scent and of course its immense bubble capability. As far as skin nourishment however, I would have to say that the SEPHORA Effervescent Cubes were definitely much more effective in this department.

I first learned about the value of whey protein drinks from the book The New York Body Plan by David Kirsch which I read in 2006. In it, the famous celebrity trainer talked about the high-protein content of most whey protein drinks without the unnecessary addition of fat.

Although Kirsch didn't mention any brands, he did give some guidelines in choosing the best kind of whey protein products available in the market today. For optimum results, he advised that one should look for a product that can deliver at least 24 grams of protein and a total fat of less than 3 grams.

It was around this time that I came to know about Optimum Nutrition (ON) Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein. Most of the fitness buffs I know of, both men and women, take this and recommend this particular product highly.

What Optimum Nutrition Is All About

What I love about Optimum Nutrition is the fact that it fulfills Kirsch's guidelines to a tee! Each rounded scoop delivers 24 grams of protein with a measly 1 gram of fat. ON also prides itself in combining whey protein isolates, the purest form of whey protein that exists, and Hydrowhey hydrolyzed whey peptides which are the best whey proteins recommended by the industry today.

Another important factor for me is the price. Optimum Nutrition is much more affordable than the other whey protein drinks I've tried from Healthy Options. I remember buying several of their whey protein products for around Php 1,200 for a mere 300 gram can. That was why when I discovered that a 5 pound tub of Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein only costs Php 2500, I quickly changed brands and have stayed with it for 6 years now.

Can you believe that I even drank whey protein all throughout my pregnancy? My OB GYN even approved of it as long as I chose the variant without any cocoa in it. According to Kirsch, if someone's trying to lose weight, the best way to consume whey protein is as a meal replacement and not as an adjunct to regular meals. I have to agree with him 101%. Months ago, I tried consuming protein shakes as an addition to my regular meals. The result? Weight gain which wasn't my goal at all. But when I resorted back to how I consumed it before my pregnancy, which was as a meal replacement during breakfast or dinner and a recovery drink after my workouts, I saw the weight loss results that I've been wanting to see.

In a nutshell, two protein drinks a day are enough for me. I just try to eat protein from other sources in my other meals. Just in case you're wondering, girls won't develop big, bulky muscles just because of whey protein drinks. That's a big misconception. On the other hand, you'll have stronger and healthier muscles because of whey protein and will have a greater chance of achieving your ideal weight if you consume it properly.

"Consume approximately 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day through a combination of high protein foods and protein supplements. For best results, consume your daily protein allotment over several small meals spread evenly throughout the day."

I remember Kirsch mentioning that the best way to power up an already energizing whey protein drink is to add flaxseed. After a magnificent two-hour tour of Musee D'orsay's Dreams & Reality Exhibit at the National Museum of Singapore, we went out for lunch at a nearby mall called The Cathay. Since we were on a rather tight schedule, we went straight to the basement where the mall food court was located.

While perusing a string of stalls and restos including the likes of Ya Kun Kaya, we noticed Indo Padang and after a few minutes decided to dine there.

If I were to describe Bohol in one word it would have to breathtaking! It's everything they say it is and so much more. Considering that we only went around for just eight hours via van rental with driver/tour guide (worth Php 2500), we were still able to see 10 of Bohol's most popular sights.

Allow me to share with you the standard attractions included in the Bohol Countryside Tour .

1. Chocolate Hills

Some 1,268 hills in the region resemble the world's most popular chocolates, Hershey's Kisses even in the absence of their signature brown hue on certain months. Feel the cool breeze while taking snapshots of these natural wonders from the observation deck.

2. Ship Haus

Ever since this house was first featured in the top rating TV program Balitang K, tour guides have included a stop-over to this uniquely conceptualized residence owned by Capt. Gaudencio Dumapias. Here, tourists can take some interesting snapshots of the house to their hearts' content.

Tiny and super evasive, the tarsiers of Loboc have drawn audiences not only from the Philippines but also from around the world. One's visit to Bohol won't be complete without a glimpse of the world's smallest primates.

6. Hanging Bridge

Tourists have always been fascinated by this bamboo bridge spanning around 40 meters across the emerald green Sipatan river. 7. Loboc River Cruise

A romantic buffet/cruise along the famed Loboc River. What it lacks in topnotch cuisine, the tour package compensates with a pretty amazing cruise.

10. Blood Compact Shrine

A historical monument conveying the treaty of friendship between Bohol Chieftain Rajah Sikatuna and Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi on March 16, 1565. This Sandugo sculpture was made by National Artist Napoleon Abueva, a Boholano himself.

Just beside the shrine is a shop selling cheap souvenir items like shirts, key chains and ref magnets among others.

Spy Myeongwol remains to be one of my most favorite Korean dramas of 2011 and for good reason. The story line hints on the perennial North & South Korea conflict in a unique, non-traditional way which according to some was actually inspired by true events. Seeing Han Ye-seul play Spy Myeongwol is always a delight. Her poise under pressure as well as the powerful stunts her character needed to deliver are so believable, I can't help but root for her every step of the way. And then comes the romance between her and Kang Woo played by Korean hearthrob Eric Moon. It seems like Eric hasn't lost his touch as a leading man ever since I first saw him in Phoenix or Firebird, a Korean Drama that belongs to my top 3 list of favorites of all time.

Aside from shooting in Seoul, Spy Myeongwol also flew to Singapore for a number of unforgettable scenes in Episode 1.

Right after the Etude House Pink Fair 2012 last week, Kathlynish and I saw some mochi being sold at a stall fronting Papemelroti. So this was what my blogger friend salmoncat was referring to, I thought.

I dashed to the freezer and asked the bubbly girl in purple hair to give us the Black Sesame (Php 65) and Azuki Red Bean (Php 65) flavors.

As expected, the fusion of ice cream inside the sticky rice makes for an entertaining, fun eat. Come to think of it, Mochi Creme shares a similar concept with Mikawaya Mochi Ice Cream except for the part that you can purchase Mochi Creme in singles at 3 SM Supermalls. On the other hand, Mikawaya is only available at Rustan's Supermarkets.

Dinner at MoMo Cafe

With a nice, cozy ambience, MoMo Cafe attracted a steady flow of diners in the Ayala Triangle Gardens including us. Perhaps it was because of the fact that the staff didn't drive late diners away but instead welcomed them with open arms. You can say, availability is key to a successful restaurant business. And we witnessed that first-hand when we dined at MoMo.

Another glistening advantage on their part would have to be the free appetizers served almost as soon as you're seated down. Who doesn't want free stuff anyway? And for me, the appetizers had me on my first taste of the pimiento dip which reminded me so much of my childhood.

Rich and earthy, the dish celebrated a symphony of flavors which to my opinion also became its waterloo. It simply had too many notes leaving us full in just a few bites.

Juice Of The Day (JOTD): Tipco Mangosteen & Mixed Fruit Juice ♪♪♪

If you've visited my site before, then you might have had the impression that I'm a big fan of Malee and Tipco Juices. Not only do they taste divine, but they are also packed with vitamins and minerals without a hint of table sugar.

Tipco Mangosteen & Mixed Fruit Juice (around Php 120)

I found this same principle at work in Tipco Mangosteen & Mixed Fruit Juice. It was rather amazing how refreshingly good this drink was. With the tartness of the mangosteen at a bare minimum, a whole kaleidoscope of flavors was successfully highlighted.

At first sip, it had that delightful taste of orange while at the very end, I was intoxicated by the wonderful banana-lychee flavors. Although Bala considered it too exotic for him, I on the other hand, can't get enough of it.

They say that the best things in life are free and last Saturday, I together with two of my most loyal blog readers, Mars Cel and Kathlynish experienced just that at the Etude House Pink Fair 2012 held last Saturday, April 21 at the SM North The Block Atrium.

Courtesy of some free tickets from Etude House, we were able to take part in one of the most heartifying, prettifying and dream-like events--fit for any princess!

Because of the overwhelming love and support of its loyal of fans for the past 2 years, Etude House Philippines hosted a two-day event filled with tickle me pink fun and merriment to the absolute delight of everyone who was there.

A huge fence bearing the signature ETUDE HOUSE colors acted both as a welcome banner and a barricade for the expected guests.

Forever 21 SM North The Block Is Now Open!

The long wait is over for all Quezon City fans awaiting the launch of Forever 21 at SM North The Block. The popular American-Korean international clothing franchise has finally unveiled its fourth installment at The Block last Thursday- with a bang!

The store made its presence felt not only in and around the mall but more so in mainstream media when the quarantined contestants of the hit ABS-CBN reality show Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) visited the store on its opening day last April 19.

Going around the store revealed lots of summer wear ranging from sleeveless tops, both hanging and hip-length with a lot of eclectic details and frazzled edges.

A whole segment dedicated to accessories left us breathless. Even H&M Singapore didn't have that much, I thought. I can't help but also notice that the store was dotted with lace tops and skirts which according to Mars Cel is all the rage in Koreanovelas right now. Oh! I was so glad that I was wearing my old lace bolero jacket yesterday. Thanks Mars Cel for the heads-up and Kathlynish for this photo.
