Okay. Here's the 411.

Buying tickets to see Gardens by the Bay proved to be much trickier than expected.

I thought that all you had to say is "I need a ticket please," and you'll be given one automatically.

Oh, how terribly wrong I was.

It turned out that Gardens by the Bay offers not just 1 but 8 Main Attractions that visitors can choose from namely, Floral Fantasy, Serene Garden, Art Sculptures, Dragonfly & Kingfisher Lakes, Bay East Garden, Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, and Supertree Grove & OCBC Skyway.

The fambam settled for the Flower Dome + Cloud Forest Bundle (SGD 25.20 or around Php 960) with free admission to the outdoor gardens, Children's Garden at Bay South and the Supertree Grove SANS (WITHOUT) the OCBC Skyway pass.

Let's begin our walking tour then.

Welcome to our Walking Tour of Gardens by the Bay Singapore!

It's impossible to start our walking tour without noticing Singapore's most iconic hotel, Marina Bay Sands, at the Bay South Garden. Known for its largest cantilevered platform hanging on three main towers reminiscent of decks of cards, at least, that's how Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie envisioned the hotel's design.

A few meters away from MBS, I saw this outdoor garden filled with parents and kids enjoying the refreshing fountains in a backdrop of spectacular greenery through selfies and videos.

Once I saw this particular scenery, I felt that the Supertree Grove believed to be the Garden's symbolic landmark, was finally within reach.

Yup. That was my initial thought when I first saw these vertical gardens up close.

But the kid in me screamed "Gandang Background sa Pic...!" (What a great background for my photo...!) 😊

I also reckoned that the Supertree Grove would provide for an interesting array of photos for my son's potential Science and Civics projects. 😃

According to the brochure, the Supertrees are "home to over 150,000 plants from more than 200 species!"

But the Gardens by the Bay Website provides more details which made the Supertrees way more interesting.

"Over 158,000 plants comprising more than 700 species and varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns and tropical flowering climbers have been planted on the 18 Supertrees. Examples of some of the species include the Tillandsia stricta from Brazil, Tillandsia fasciculate from Panama, Cattleya maxima from Ecuador, and Pseudorhipsalis from Costa Rica."

Well, if that's not a testament to the Gardens' passion for horticulture, I don't know what else could.

Somewhere between 25 and 50 meters tall, basically the height of a 16-storey building, these Supertrees are amazingly constructed with environmentally sustainable functions which include the ability to light up through solar energy as well as serve as air exhaust receptacles for cooled conservatories inside the Gardens. 👏👏👏

We failed to revisit Gardens by the Bay at night; but, since we were still able to capture the Supertree Grove's spectacular Light sans the Sound Display from Tito U's hotel room at the Marina Bay Sands, I still regarded my slip up as auspicious.

Due to the fact that our feet had been killing us by the time we reached the Flower Dome, the fambam's initial impulse was to find the nearest available chairs. Lola Lydz and Tuts were fortunate enough to find one which somehow re-energized them for another round of walking and selfies. 😜

Once I had caught my breath it was only then that I saw what the Flower Dome is really all about.

My jaw had dropped in amazement as I perused "the largest columnless greenhouse in the world!"

If you're curious as to whether the whole place is air-conditioned, well the answer is a resounding YES.

Cheers to that! 🍹🍹🍹

But of course, the main use of the AC is to replicate the climate of origin of "almost 30,000 plants of over 150 species in 9 different gardens from 5 continents of the world namely, Australia, America, Africa, Asia, and Europe," according to the Garden's brochure.

To celebrate the beautiful floral diversity of each continent, the Flower Dome changes throughout the entire year. During our visit, we were able to catch the Tulipmania Floral Display which evoked a European vibe mainly because the Netherlands has become "the" tourist destination whenever tulips are in full bloom.

Do you know that like onions and garlic, tulips are bulbous plants too? Sans the smell, tulip bulbs are planted from September to October, grow roots in November, develop green shoots from February to March and are in full bloom from April to May.

That's the reason why Tulipmania usually occurs around this time at Gardens by the Bay.

But wait. 💁

The Netherlands might have been synonymous with Tulips since the 16th century, but it was actually in Central Asia, from the Hindu Mountains in Kazakhstan, where tulips originated from. They were then cultivated by the Turks, as early as 1000 AD, according to mvslim.com. In fact, tulip is derived from the Turkish word turban which refers to the shape of the flower.

Considered to be the third most popular flower in the world, the tulip's beauty has remained flawless and ever-evolving over the centuries.

Outside the cooled conservatory was a connecting room overflowing with photos and videos of different flower and plant species currently on display at the Gardens.

Just when I thought the Flower Dome was AWESOME, the Cloud Forest came out to be even MORE AMAZING, all thanks to a 35-meter indoor man-made waterfall considered to be one of the tallest in the world!

Encased in a 12,000-meter Cool- Moist Conservatory, the waterfall, along with a plethora of "orchids, pitcher plants, and ferns from the cool-moist Tropical Montane region" makes the Cloud Forest a definite must-see.

Yes, the entire conservatory is air-conditioned and set to around 23 - 25 degrees Celsius to preserve the plants inside. 😮😊

First Time To Fly With Singapore Airlines

I was a ball of energy when the fambam arrived at the NAIA Terminal 3. I can't help but smile to myself because, in just a few hours, we'll be arriving in Singapore after 8 long years! My son Tutapel was merely 3 when we first visited the place and although we were there for four days, we weren't able to see much because of the rainy weather. (Note to self: Don't fly to Singapore in late November to December.)

Another reason for my excitement was flying aboard Singapore Airlines for the very first time. I've heard quite a number of favorable reviews about this particular air carrier that's why I can't help but be curious about what sets it apart from the rest, at least, as far as economy flights are concerned.

One thing I noticed was that containers of complimentary earphones were stationed before boarding so you can have your pick right away.

A plethora of HD touchscreen monitors were peppered all throughout the plane quite similar to the set-up of Cathay Pacific.

What distinguished Singapore Airline's inflight entertainment from Cathay Pacific's was a more vast array of movies (yes, there are Korean and Bollywood, mind you), TV programs and games, available with just a touch on the screen.

As far as service was concerned, the flight attendants were indeed respectful, attentive, with an auto-pilot aim to please button and just down-right nice! Really!

While we were busy browsing through the game selections, Tutapel and I were chatting about the food. I told him I had a feeling that the food will be great so he better enjoy it as much as he can.

My cutesy nephew and niece were seated beside us and I thought it was really sweet that the three cousins from my husband's side were photographed together while inside the plane which was a rather rare occurrence.

Our departure time from Manila was 7:40 AM with an arrival time of 11:20 AM in Singapore. I figured that the food will be served in an hour and a half after boarding and surely by that time, Tuts will be a very happy boy.

My "fearless forecast" proved to be correct! Brekkie was served right on MY Time.

Tuts and I chose two different dishes so that we can try both types. The selections were tasty and the main dishes were served warm.

The sausage and potatoes topped with shredded onions were delish; but, the Fish with Noodles was a hands-down winner! I can still taste the noodles' savory flavor paired with the meaty goodness from the fish.

It was indeed a hearty breakfast and a sophisticated initiation to the fastidious and discriminating taste of the air carrier even in its economy flights.

Six days later, we were back aboard Singapore Airlines enjoying another set of food selections.

I was doing my own version of a happy dance at least inside my head because the dishes were different from what we had just days before.

The kids were served first; perhaps, to pacify their temperamental nature, if you know what I mean. Tutapel had his fair share of his Chicken Rice, a good thirty minutes before us, adults were served with our dinner choices.

Selection # 1: Chicken with Rice

While waiting for my dinner, I can't help but sneak in some bites from Tutapel's. I found the rice fragrant and tasty, and the chicken was cooked well and draped with a sweet appetizing sauce. The veggies were served fresh and cooked just right.

Selection # 2: Pork with Mashed Potatoes

Somehow the second selection eclipsed the first, in my opinion. The pork was buttery-soft, sinfully good and deliciously paired with an equally tasty serving of mashed potatoes served hot and remained warm all throughout dinner time.

If the food is this good in economy, it's hard to wrap my mind around how phenomenal the food would have to be in first-class or business class.

What I Think of The Bund Hotel in Shanghai, China

few days after we landed in the stunning city of Hangzhou, the capital of

Zhejiang, we went on a 2-hour 30-minute bus ride to Shanghai, the largest city

in China by population and the second most densely populated city in the world.

From Hangzhou's sprawling scenery and admirable infrastructure, the ride

provided an unhindered view of Shanghai's equally formidable edifices and

skyscrapers mixed with equally cared for scenery and waterfronts.

That's why when we were scheduled to visit The Bund, a highly-recommended

attraction that's a fitting fusion of both worlds, I for one, can't wait for it to

actually, happen.

It was already nighttime when we arrived at The Bund Hotel located along

Guangdong Road in the Huangpu District. The hotel lighting for instance added

a splash of elegance to the exterior which was of course more of a necessity

rather than of sheer opulence.

As we maneuvered our luggage from the lobby to the lift and finally to the

hallway, I can't help but remember that Hollywood film that underscored the

importance of a "hotel's soul" when choosing accommodations.

concept in a TEDx Talk dubbed "The Soul of a Hotel."

The Bund Hotel offered appetizing Breakfast spreads that fused both Western

and Chinese dishes. Our palates appreciated the food choices, textures and

tastes in this hotel rather than the menu made available in our hotel in

Hangzhou which overflowed in unfamiliar spices and veggie dishes.

Mayon Volcano: The Muse Behind Catriona Gray's Ms. Universe-Worthy Gown

If the intricate beading and fiery color were not enough hints for figuring out

the inspiration behind Catriona Gray's Ms. Universe-winning attire, then I guess

its moniker "Lava Gown" was a dead giveaway.

I never expected anything associated with the term "lava" to be synonymous

with something sexy; but, designer Mak Tumang proved everyone wrong when

Catriona Gray had donned the intense-looking gown before she strutted down

the 2018 Ms. Universe stage with what we now call as the "lava walk."

Having seen the Mayon Volcano up close, it's no wonder that the designer and

the new Ms. Universe were so captivated to the point of creating an evening

gown because of it.

The first time we saw this natural wonder located in Albay, the volcano's perfect

cone was barely visible due to a group of obstinate clouds unwilling to let

visitors bask in the volcano's complete glory. Old folks, however, have a

different interpretation on this matter.

Legend has it that whenever the clouds envelop the mountain, Panganoron,

the brave warrior who loved Magayon, the only daughter of the tribal chief of

Rawis, is indeed kissing her; and, when the rains do trickle down the slopes,

they are actually Panganoron's tears as he mourns for his lost love.

But we didn't travel 11 hours from Manila to Legazpi to be found wanting.

That's why we watched the volcano like a hawk from every possible angle.

The good thing is, the Mayon is so mighty and resplendent that it's impossible to

see anything else when you're traveling all over Legazpi.

That translates to a plethora of chances for photo-ops, selfies, and famfies.

Several months ago, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson announced that the coffee giant will close down about 150 stores in the US by 2019.

I can't help but ask whether this decision will affect its global satellite branches as well?

Though I'm in no position to speculate about such financial matters, I guess I have a thing or two to say about customer service in Starbucks' international stores like in China. What I'm pretty sure is that Starbucks in Mainland China handles clients differently from my home country, the Philippines. 🤓

If you're flying to China this holiday season, chances are, you're more than likely to get your cup of java and frappe fix from good ole Starbucks. Some people maybe biased against this juggernaut for a number of reasons with the La Boulange Mess at the helm of its most controversial business decisions. 😠

Despite this ill-fated, heart wrenching yet premeditated tactical maneuver, as some sectors believe, we can't deny the incredible pull we feel whenever we're confronted by Starbucks' delectable array of Hot Drinks, Frappes, Cakes and Pastas.

That was why when we had visited the Mainland, we took it upon ourselves to check the coffee landscape of Starbucks' satellite branches in Hangzhou and Shanghai.

The queue was long and I thought perhaps it was because of the language barrier. Little did I know that most tourists were in fact relatively good in Mandarin. What caused the delay was a spatter of follow-up questions about their orders simply because they weren't familiar with Starbucks' usual offerings in China.

I believe the less adept Mandarin speakers resorted to English at some point because the lovely girl at the counter was indeed proficient.

Earlier, I asked one of the staff whether the store's accepting Mastercard; and, to my disappointment, she said NO. Thank goodness I had the common sense of checking with the cashier whether this claim was true or not. Imagine my jubilation when she said that they do process Mastercard, but for some branches, VISA is the only credit card recognized.

After placing an order for a frappe, my mugs of choice were wrapped in paper and properly stowed.

To while away the time, I perused some of the store's offerings which included an alluring plethora of moon cakes, sandwiches, cakes, and signature mugs.

The downside: It turned out that there was only ONE staff member in charge of concocting drinks which explained the terrible delay in my order.

...and proceeded to have lunch at this resto right in front of Starbucks.

This particular Starbucks branch is truly exquisite because it overlooks the infamous West Lake.

It was just unfortunate that we weren't able to enjoy the view from the store because we had to comply with the tour itinerary, much to our disappointment.😢

On our last day in Shanghai, I managed to veer away from the tour itinerary while the others were having lunch at a nearby building.

The only Starbucks in sight was the one at Shanghai Plaza, a shopping mall in the Huangpu district.

Despite the gnawing chill that day, the fambam braved the 11 degrees Celsius temp to visit my fave desserts bar, Hui Lau Shan Healthy Desserts. It might be ironic, to say the least, but the best way to beat the cold weather is by eating cool stuff as well.

I have to credit my dear Gyu Hye Sun who portrayed Geum Jandi in Boys Over Flowers for that nugget of wisdom. While filming one of my all-time fave K-Dramas, she was asked how she dealt with the freezing temperature and she answered matter-of-factly, "By eating ice."

That rather interesting "nugget of wisdom" led us to improvise a little by pairing the proverbial ice with fruit royalty such as mango in all its glorious forms- pureed, sliced, and even frozen.

Here's the dessert "that launched a thousand ships" so to speak. Transcendent in a pool of delectably sweet mango puree, my fave dessert is dotted with chewy rice balls, mango slices and topped with mango ice cream. Believe me, this is simply glorious! I'm not exaggerating if I told you that I even heard Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus' at first bite; well, technically, it's my 2nd for I had this same dessert 8 years ago.

NO matter how many times I have this variant, it NEVER gets old!

Stewed Milk in Coconut with Oats (Between HKD 69 and HKD 86)

Another way to combat the cold weather is to take in something hot. A couple of the fambam did just that by ordering oats in coconut milk served in a creatively reproduced coconut husk.

This particular dessert variant was highly recommended by the staff as a natural insulator against the persistent cold weather. Tutapel all bundled up is living proof to the chill, man!

NO matter the weather, I found the desserts at Hui Lau Shan incredibly refreshing and comforting. For me, there's no better dessert than something with mango as the "Lead Actor for a Mini-Series or Television Film"!

Our son Tutapel was three when we visited our very first Peanuts Comic Strip themed café.

As authentic Snoopy fans, it was indeed one of the highlights of our trip. Even the rest of the fambam didn't have any problems admitting this fact.

Six years after and several pounds heavier, thank God, Tuts as we fondly call him, had a blast with the rest of the fambam, this time, at the Charlie Brown Café Tsim Sha Tsui branch in Hong Kong.

The coffee shop here is several times bigger than the Singapore themed café located at 313 Somerset that we've been to.

The two times that we've been to the Tsim Sha Tsui branch, the cafe was full-packed! All the novelty perhaps made the place a tourist magnet, explaining why we've been there twice in just a span of a few days.

Thanks to blogger.com's catchy phrase, I've been reminded of my wilful disregard of this particular blog.

Just reading the witty tagline helped me remember how extremely happy and fulfilled I am whenever I write and press the publish button.

One of the things that I'm most enthusiastic about is to share things that I find interesting and inspiring.

You see my son is a rather picky eater.

He's very specific in what he's looking for in a dish.

When he was very young, he was just fond of Jollibee Chickenjoy and Jolly Spaghetti.

But now, his tastebuds have evolved.

To our surprise, he's now into cream and oil-based pastas which are not usually served in fast food joints.

The whens and whys of this drastic change are still unknown to me but we try very much to accommodate his request; but of course, if it's well within budget.

At least once or twice a year, we visit TWG Tea & Boutique @ Greenbelt 5, not only to enjoy my son Tutapel's favorite seafood pasta; but, to also experience its famed Afternoon Tea which usually commences with the tea of our choice served in an elegant tea pot with a mirror-finish gold-plated warmer.

I have a kick whenever I see the "golden pot" for it somehow reminds me of that charming Aesop Fable "The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs." Instead of eggs however a free flow of comforting tea comes out.

Shrimp Linguine. (Php 495)

Seared marinated shrimps, accompanied by linguine pasta served with haricot verts tossed in a creamy tomato Arrabiata sauce infused with Eternal Summer Tea and topped with shaved parmesan cheese.

I always have a thing for deliciously written menu descriptions for my dining experience officially begins with that. In my mind, if a resto paid someone to write this beautifully, then their food must be something to look forward to.

However, I came across some blogs downplaying that mouthwatering claim; but, in all fairness, our 19 kilometer drive wasn't put to waste when we finally sunk our teeth to this beauty.

My picky eater was all praises that's why whenever we go to Makati, it would be a crime in his oh so innocent mind not to have this particular pasta to-go.

Honestly, it's quite fascinating to look at a plethora of treats placed neatly on this shiny three-tier silver tray in an ambience of elegance. Somehow, the presentation makes these nibbles look even more yummylicious.

We enjoyed this tiny beauty filled with emmental cheese and turkey ham with green salad on top. However if from a range of 1-10, your starving meter is near the maximum rate, I don't think this warm sandwich, although really delish can satiate your appetite. I advise that you get a pasta to go with this one.

We're authentic ~~Warriors Fans,~~ wait, that's a different blog altogether. What I'm trying to say is that my son and I are deeply fond of macarons. We find the TWG version, more moist than French Baker's, Tous les Jours' and Bizu's combined. But I haven't tried Laduree's famed counterpart, that's why I can't comment on that just yet.

Although I'm a scone-gal, I wasn't expecting much about TWG's recipe for I read somewhere that it can be a little cardboardy.

I enjoyed my share with a dallop of cream and jelly on every morsel. The combo was mooore than enjoyable. I ordered two more scones for my boys who can't help but be fascinated while I devoured those poor things. Oh well.....

Timeless Musings: Ambeth Ocampo's Books on Rizal & F. Sionil Jose's Take on the Duterte Phenomenon

I didn't exactly know what happened.

We went to good ole National Bookstore with the original intent of buying books for my son. There was nothing strange about that. What was rather unusual was that I purchased more books for myself than for him!

I didn't regret buying Mr. Ocampo's books at all for the author is able to make Philippine history interesting and brimming with so much life. He is indeed a master storyteller, so effective in fact that I continually asked myself whether I was reading history or reading the synopsis of a Korean Drama!

Mr. Ocampo is successful in separating Rizal the Man from the Myth, thanks to the author's painstaking research from the hero's first-hand works and letters. While reading my Ocampo Book Haul, I can't help but see Rizal as an ordinary man struggling with similar dreams and fears.

In the book Meaning & History, Mr. Ocampo explains this concept further.

"So by dissecting Rizal the myth, and by juxtaposing this against the real historical Rizal, one attains a glimpse of this "imagined" national identity.

We create Rizal in our own image and likeness using both memory and amnesia to suit our ruffled conscience. How we will see Rizal in the coming century will be a clear expression of how we see ourselves.

Rizal both in life and in death showed the Filipino people a capacity for greatness. Only when we share this view can we fully understand Rizal and consequently ourselves." ( Chapter: Memory and Amnesia, page 19)

Mr. Ocampo further noted, "...that what made Rizal the hero he is today was his capacity to rise above his physical limitations and to attempt great deeds."

Mr. Ocampo's highly-esteemed colleague, National Artist F. Sionil Jose echoed a similar view during one of his talks which I was fortunate enough to attend . He said, "Rizal matched wits with any white man" which garnered the world's respect. Proof is that many nations have adopted Rizal as their hero as seen in many landmarks and statues from around Asia, Germany and in Spain, Mr. Jose added.

Many regard Mr. Jose as a sage of our times for he's able to make sense of history, politics and current events like no other. No wonder a number of our kababayan want to know what the National Artist's thoughts are on the 2016 Presidential Elections.

On April 27, Mr. Jose posted his views on his Facebook Page with emphasis on the supposed "Duterte Phenomenon."

This was not the first time that the National Artist shared razor-sharp views on how the government should be run as seen in his now famous Open Letter to NoyNoy published in the Philippine Star on May 23, 2010.

Truth be told, I don't want to miss my mom because it only reminds me that she's no longer of this world.

Every time I look at my son, my mind always brings me back to those moments when my mom lovingly gazed at me without saying a word. I remember a particular instance wherein I was in the study room hitting the books for an exam, when mommy just stayed in the doorway staring at me with a mesmerized smile on her face.

That moment was buried in the deepest recesses of my soul, unuttered until now. I couldn't decipher what that look was all about not until I had my own son.

Just to see his face makes my heart flutter like no other. He doesn't even have to do anything nor say anything to make me happy. I simply am because he is there!

However, as much as I want to be the best mom possible, I fall short of my calling most of the time. There were instances, I think, wherein a hug was more comforting than a reprimand or a word of encouragement way better than a critique. In the end, I still chose to admonish maybe because I was too tired or too stubborn to understand my son's predicament.

Now in my early forties, about the same age of my mom in the picture above, I realize that my mom was also far from perfect. But what makes her the perfect mom is the way she loved me; pretty much similar to the mother in this immensely inspiring video.

Much of what I know about love and sacrifice, I've learned from just watching my mom apply it in our daily lives which according to her was a product of "grasya" or what we refer to in the bible as God's Amazing Grace.

I once asked my 7 year old son why we love the way we do. His reply which he learned from attending Sunday School for the past four years, left me dumbfounded --but in a good way.

"Mama," he responded, "we love because He first loved us." (I John 4:19)

Despite craving for Yellow Cab's extremely popular Charlie Chan Chicken Pasta, my "motley crew" and I didn't dash to the nearest YC branch. We opted to whip up our own version instead as a wonderful way to bond while saving our precious pesos in the process.

What We Used:

250 grams of angel's hair pasta, cooked according to package directions
olive oil
150 grams of diced chicken meat
ground cashews and roasted peanuts
2 packs of Clara Ole Kung Pao Pasta Sauce
Lee Kum Kee Oyster Sauce to taste
salt and white pepper to taste
brown sugar to taste
chili pepper flakes to taste
scallions or spring onions
lemon juice

What I Did with the Pasta:
I love cooking pasta so without going through the preliminaries, I basically assigned and authorized myself to do the job!

After putting in just enough water in the pan, I added in a handful of salt to make the pasta distinctly more flavorful. I got that tip from constantly watching Giada De Laurentiis's show on the Asian Food Channel.
A minute after the water boiled, I added in the pasta and allowed it to cook for a few minutes.
Since Angel's hair cooks much faster than any other pasta types, it just took a little under 4 minutes before it turned out al dente. A minute before this happened however, I was already scooping the pasta out of the pan to preserve the chewy texture that I dearly love.
Coating the Angel's Hair with a some olive oil is actually my favorite step because by this time, I can freely devour my pasta sans the sauce!

What We Did with the Sauce:

After mixing in some salt, pepper and lemon juice to our chicken, we let it marinate inside the fridge for about two hours.
Afterwards, we sauteed the meat in oil, added in some nuts and cooked both for a few more minutes.
We then poured in the Clara Ole Kung Pao Pasta Sauce and cooked until everything's been heated through.
A tablespoon or two of oyster sauce tossed in with some lemon juice, sugar, salt and pepper flakes did make a difference in the over-all texture of the sauce.
As a fitting finale, we added in the pasta as well as some scallions for freshness.

Hmmmm...I can most definitely devour all the garnishings in one sitting!

Bitten by the Blogging Bug Once Again

Looking back, I can't believe that I've only made 6 blog entries for 2015!

Mommy duties have definitely taken over my life this past year highlighted mostly by creating reviewers and mock tests for my Grade schooler. I still can't believe how complicated lessons have become considering that my son is only in Grade 2!

What My Thoughts Are

More than just making good grades in school, I have a greater dream for my son and that's where I've focused my body, mind and spirit onto for the past couple of years.

In a more romantic sense, you can say that I've been gripped by a dream and there's no way of escaping it...

Allow me to give you a short background. A decade before my son was born, I heard our Senior Pastor then, now our Pastor Emeritus, talked about the need to raise up mathematicians and scientists here in the Philippines.

He then went about re-introducing one of the greats, Thomas Alva Edison, whose thirst for knowledge was only quenched when he began creating a plethora of inventions including the most celebrated of them all- the electric light bulb.

However in the bestseller "Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation," author Steven Johnson offered a different viewpoint.

"Folklore calls Edison the inventor of the light bulb, but in truth the lightbulb came into being through a complex network of interaction between Edison and his rivals, each contributing key pieces to the puzzle along the way." (page 231)

Honestly, both sentiments make sense.

In Edison's own words, he described his innovative process this way:

"My principal business consists of giving commercial value to the brilliant, but misdirected, ideas of others...Accordingly, I never pick up an item without thinking of how I might improve it."

Sites about the great inventor are usually rife with inspiring quotes believed to be from Edison himself which zero in on the value of perseverance, faith and hope amid life's difficulties.

At the very heart of the scientist's interesting story of course, is God's predetermined plan. That's why I gravitate toward this standpoint most of all:

"God wanted to give light to the world in the most literal sense, and he chose Thomas Alva Edison to let it come to pass." (Paraphrased from our pastor)

What My Recent Meditations Have Become

Most of the time, I can't help but wonder why some life events do come to pass while some of the things I desperately want simply don't- no matter how much I prayed or fasted for them.

During these times, I get the impression that when my desire for getting the answer exceeds that of my yearning to know more about God Himself, He usually waits it out and begins a process of changing my thoughts and heart to make them in tune to His will.

I've also noticed that when my primary motivation is to give Him glory through a life of excellence, He does open doors that no man can ever shut.

An open door did come to us in the form of a supplementary program called Eye Level, formerly known as E.Nopi. How I even discovered that such thing even existed is worth telling.

What I can say is that for the past 8 months since my son's enrollment into Eye Level's Math Program, his Mental Math and Critical Thinking have drastically improved.

What I'm Most Grateful For

I'm deeply appreciative not only for the medal itself but more so for what it represents. It involved motivating my son to commit his extra time not just to take note of his regular school load, but also to keep track of his Eye Level lessons daily.

The medal also symbolized the fruits of my son's labor in answering drills and booklets just so he could calculate correctly without written carryovers.

Aside from my son's progress in Math, another thing that I'm most thankful for is that last month, I had the opportunity to celebrate my 6th Anniversary as an Internet Voice Talent operating out of a homebased studio.

Allow me to sum up how utterly grateful I am this way:

Peaceful Hideaway

Boracay's electrifying energy may have awaken the #fambam's fun-loving side months before; but, Bohol's laid-back nature gave us a contrasting dose of peace and serenity. There weren't much visitors during our stay which somehow made us feel that we had the island all to ourselves.

It has often been said food has a way of transporting us back to the past. And I think it's the same with cakes. They, too, have a way of tapping into our memory bank like no other.

For instance, my earliest recollection involving these confections was during my 7th birthday. I remember becoming mesmerized by a gorgeous white cake in front of me and how heartbroken I was at the same time when my cousin smudged its glorious icing.

That memory was still very much alive in my head when I took this exquisite Inspiration Fresh Cream Cake by Tous les Jours out of the box. I made sure that the edges remained untouched and the over-all design, unaltered.

I can't even begin to narrate the horror I must have felt, if for some sloppy reason, this particular Tous les Jours Artisan Cake got destroyed in the process!

Any Tous les Jours fan would know that you don't just buy a TLJ Cake for the taste but also for its over-all concept. For one, I like how the Inspiration Fresh Cream Cake comes in a classic heart-shaped design bursting in red and white!

When I finally had my piece of the cake, I can't help but feel comforted by TLJ's soft, moist chiffon cake bearing its signature sweet 'n' tangy taste. On the contrary, my nieces and nephews found the cake too sour for comfort.

"It's the yogurt..." I explained. "It's an acquired taste, alright. But once you get used to it, you can't help but ask for more."

For some reason, I saw them finish their share and before long, they even asked for a second, third helping- and even apiece for later... :-) :-) :-)

Around October of last year, I received a product for review from Michael Todd (True Organics) which turned out to be a beauty brand popular among Hollywood circles and powerful glossies worldwide.

I've been using Michael Todd's Charcoal Detoxifying Facial Mask since then and I believe that 6 months is more than enough time to collate and analyze my findings and lay them out in a review.

Packaging:

The facial mask comes in a 100 ml (3.4 fl oz.) bottle bearing warm lavender tones. The product claims that mineral rich Charcoal is able to exfoliate and draw out impurities and toxins and clear the skin of excess oil, dirt and other pollutants.

Product packaging shows that Michael Todd Charcoal Detoxifying Mask is:

"...formulated with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C for increased penetration and moisturizing. Mild action and the presence of natural soothing agents reduce irritation and inflammation associated with sensitive skin. Exfoliates to remove dead skin, impurities and toxins, moisturizes and firms, improves elasticity and pliability of the skin, unclogs pores allowing skin to breathe and facilitates movement of skin oils. Turn lackluster looking skin into healthier younger looking skin."

High-Points:

I may have found the mask's smokey, ash-like scent overpowering at first; but, on second try, I've begun to fully embrace it.

I loved the mask's silky feel and how it was fully absorbed by my skin. In fact, I consider Michael Todd's version two notches higher than the other leave-on masks I've tried before-- in terms of texture, absorption level and over-all effect.

When I first applied the facial mask, I was rather expecting it to leave an uncomfortable sticky feeling. My fear proved to be groundless when I felt like I just had a simple facial moisturizer on - and nothing else.

The built-in pump dispenser surely made every use, fairly fast and simple.

Compared to Korean Mask Sheets that somehow left a plumper-looking skin, Michael Todd's Charcoal Mask made my skin feeling and looking remarkably fresh, clean and hydrated.

Even if I put the mask on for an hour, an hour and a half - even if the recommended time is only 15 minutes - I've NEVER experienced any form of skin irritation.

Low-Point:

I couldn't think of anything that I don't particularly like about the mask EXCEPT perhaps about the shipping time. In my case, I was able to acquire the product from the nearest postal office in our area, sometime between 2 and 3 weeks from the time it was dispatched from the US to the Philippines.

My Verdict:

♪♪♪♪ Great! Highly recommended.

How to Use:

After cleansing, apply an even layer over face and neck. Avoid eye area.
Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse.
Follow with toner and moisturizer.

* May be used 2 to 3 times a week.

Even in the absence of the popular squid ink pasta, the dish still managed to impress with its deeply flavorful and immensely delish symphony of chorizo pamplona, prawns and pistachio. Seasoned just right for the palate as evidenced in our failure to drizzle some lemon; but when we actually did, the result was an even lighter and fresher version that is both appealing and satiating at the same time.

Wildflour recreates this classic dish from the town of Amatrice in Rome with trademark ingredients such as tomato, chili and cheese with the guanciale (cured pork cheeks) at the heart of it all. Instead of pecorino romano, Wildflour used freshly grated parmesan which may seem unorthodox to purists; but, still vibrates with sharp intensity. The richness of the guanciale in some inexplicable way blends well with the tomatoes' tangy nature; and, with a bit of zing from the chili, Wildflour's version is truly an homage to Roman cooking at its best.

When you think about it, it's like Christmas in a cup ; but, in my case, since I only consume frappes, it's more authentic to say, Christmas in a giant plastic cup with a slot. :)

Any which way, we had a great time not only because the ice cream was superb; but also partly due to the magnificently-lit tree in the background, reminiscent of the ones found at the Ayala Triangle Light & Sound Show!

Replicating Ayala Triangle's Annual Festival of Lights is of course not an issue for Fairview Terraces, another Ayala Land development which was inaugurated barely ten months ago.

Three of our fave desserts/coffee shops are located around the mall's imposing centerpiece which made our dining experience truly enjoyable, every single time.

Baskin-Robbins.

Avid fans of the legendary ice cream brand have waited for months and finally, just a few weeks ago, Baskin-Robbins has finally opened its third shop in the northern half of Quezon City.

The newly-opened ice cream shop never runs out of customers eager to try out Baskin-Robbins' plethora of flavors. In fact, I had to wait for some time not only due to the significant amount of clients; but, also because of the overwhelming number of flavors to choose from!

We were able to sample four flavors projecting distinct characteristics that left us wanting for more! With a creamy texture quite similar to Haagen-Dazs combined with Better-than-Ice Cream's (BTIC) unmistakable gumminess, the resulting frozen confection is absolutely amaaazing!

During the initial fitting, we asked the kind sales rep for the armor in size 1 which turned out to be waaay bigger than expected. I was told that the armor should only reach the torso and not the legs.

Years ago, while I was writing a magazine article on Food Cravings, I came across multiple studies showing the strong connection between food AND love, rituals and holidays.

Now that Christmas is really just around the corner, I won't be surprised if you're constantly looking for great dishes to share with family and friends.

CIBO DIECI

Cibo has been on just about anyone's list of fave restos for years and thankfully, its commitment to good food and high-quality ingredients still prevails. Third time's a charm as what they usually say, but in Cibo's case, it had me at hello. You can forget my cheesy lines; but, not my raves mainly on its Rigatoni Alla Bolognese Con Panna cooked al dente and enveloped in an amazingly delectable sauce made of beef, cream and parmesan.

Their thin-sliced Prosciutto di Parma is perfectly baked with its five main ingredients: tomatoes, mozzarella, ham, arugula and parmesan- working significantly well with one another. When paired with Cibo's refreshingly cool Pomelo fruit shake, the fine details of both dishes are revealed all the more.

Just a few shops from CIBO Dieci, is Sinfully by Makati Shangri-la, well-loved for its array of exquisite gingerbreads and sweet stuffs. My personal faves include their mouthwatering pralines and macarons great to curb your cravings and also perfect as Christmas gifts to colleagues and friends.

Sinfully's rich 'n' creamy cheesecake is also a must-try along with its Opal Coffee Cake that sparkles with a unique citrusy coffee taste. However if you're not particularly fond of sweets, you may find Sinfully's bread selections equally inventive and interesting.
