I spent a hot summer day with Alejandra and her little princess, shooting her bridals.

I love that both mother and daughter were there for the shoot,

it's such a special time for both of them and what a lovely pair they make in their white dresses.

I had the opportunity to photograph the Ngata family again, this time at their home in Baltimore. I loved being able to photograph their growing family, little Sam was an only child and 3 months old last time I photographed him. I flew in the night before and awoke to the sounds of Dr. Seuss and the family up to their usual morning routine. After bath time for the boys we ventured out to their back yard and later to the Sagamore Farm, an expansive property with rolling hills as far as the eye could see. We finally made it back home in October, and by finally I'm talking

17 years for my hubby and 10 years for me.

It was such an invigorating trip that has set in motion some pretty big changes.

I decided to forgo the sandy camera gear and left all my professional equipment at home.

Instead, I brought only a pentax k1000 film camera, some Ektar 100,

a few underwater disposable cameras and my iphone.

We stayed in Kailua, in a little blue cottage with an outdoor shower.

We ate too much Korean bbq and pork hash that

by week two we were craving a hamburger or some spaghetti.

We swam everyday until dark, and then let the kids hunt for glowing plankton

that would wash up on shore in the moonlight.

We drove from Kailua to the North Shore at least every other day.

I turned internet friends into real life friends and one of them even

graced us with a mini family photoshoot!

My hair was a mess... lavender hair does not take kindly to daily sea water.

It was literally the color of the sun, so bright and yellow in fact,

that not once, but twice, I brought a bee home with me.

I mean, those things came crawling out of my yellow hair like it was a sunflower or something.

Sorry to those who I met for the first time for my offensively bright hair! hehe.

Anyways I hope you enjoy a few of my snapshots from our trip.
P.S. I was there, even though I'm not in any of the pictures ;)

This was a fun little play shoot I did with Elana, who've I wanted to work with for awhile. Isn't she gorgeous and truly one of the sweetest girls I've met! She is Egyptian, cool right!?... and something else...ahh..I can't remember...sorry Elana. She's a mix-plate, just like me ;)

I knew I wanted to shoot film (about 90% film here)

PLUS

I had just received a box of intricate, handmade head pieces that needed playing with, from

the lovely Irina of Lacielle Roselle, who is also one of the sweetest girls I have yet to meet.

Everything else, the dress, jacket, driftwood, lace, etc. were just things from my home. We shot in my backyard as the sun was setting and we had ourselves a lovely little gypsy shoot, so indicative of my own style. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the desert is so inspiring to me!

My lil gypsy heart truly comes alive shooting there, I really will miss it!

Meet Hannah, she has a sweet voice, delicate features and super petite frame, when she told me she plays Tinkerbell at Disneyland it all made sense. She wanted her bridals to be whimsy, vintage and fairytale like. We didn't have to do much to accomplish a fairytale vibe, her look and dress already did that.

I've shot a ton of family photos but I've yet to have a real family session for myself. It's ironic I know, the photographer who is never photographed.

We have our first real family photo shoot this upcoming week, our photographer, Ben, is coming in from Arizona and it is slightly stressful. I've heard it all before while working with other families, how everything goes wrong right before the day of your shoot and I know now what you guys have been talking about!! ;)

My boys are sick, like copious amounts of snot, wiping every 5 minutes before it slithers down into their open mouthes...umm...eeewww! I've got half an eyebrow thanks to a careless eyebrow-threader-lady who've I've since hexed in my mind a hundred times and a few times more every time I look in the mirror! I never did lose that baby weight from having little Mani.... a year ago... hehe.

And I swear I'm in the middle of a fat week, "why am I retaining so much water!" LOL.

Now hopefully my son's haircut tomorrow will go as planned and we can find something for my husband to wear or we will be the raggediest bunch there ever was.

BUT

this is a really important "BUT".... you can skip over my whole melodramatic rant up there and just read this below.....

It is SOO important to me to freeze this time of our lives;

When Sieli was 5, the summer before starting kindergarten and had a missing bottom tooth and still a little bit of baby-chub to her cute little cheeks.

When Legend was 3, the week before he turned 4 and still had the coolest hair in town and loved to run fast and jump and pretend he was the red power ranger who goes "SUPER-FAST".

When Baby Mani was 1, and had the cutest little curls and ringlets and little gap in his front baby teeth and walked like a cute little baby penguin, waddling everywhere.

When Mommy had lavender blonde hair and Daddy had dreads, "orraiighhh"! ;)

A photographer friend of mine photographed two families (1, 2) who have each lost one of their children after their photoshoot. What a blessing it must be to be able to look back at their beautiful photographs and have something to remember their child's laugh or special smile.

Stop putting off your family photos to lose weight or blah blah blah.

You only have right now to capture that cute little quirk in your kids or they're camera shy grin or their terrible-twos-tantrum. hehe.

Something to think about.

The bride is a big fan of Rodney Smith and wanted a whimsical, Alice in Wonderland-type feel.

I wanted to keep it simple and bring a whimsy element to the photos without crazy props and outfits. I think we done good ;) The only prop was this amazing tree which has since been destroyed by a storm and is gone *sad face*.
