The End; thus, a New Beginning.

Just as the speed of light so was my stay in Poland as an Erasmus student and intern. As days turned to weeks, so did weeks turned to months; and finally a start came to a finish. Moments in Katowice felt so good that the thoughts of it's end saddened me :(. This arose a question in me, Why do good things come to an end?.

Katowice: The city of gardens.

Katowice, the aspiring city of gardens creates a brilliant platform with superb integration of education, fun, friends and community for the beautiful minds. My time in Katowice was terrific; from trying new things (ice skating, paint ball, go kart...), to eating new scrumptious food (placki po węgiersku, gołąbki, flaczki, żurek śląski, kiełbasa, fasolka po bretońsku...), to drinking new piwos and Wódkas (Tyskie, Lech, Żubr, Żubrówka, Luksusowa...), to learning new things (polish language, blog writing...), and above all making new priceless friendship (Bulgarians, Colombians, Czech, French, Germans, Hungarian, Poles, Portuguese, Romanians, Spanish, Turkish...).

My internship at the international promotion office of the University of Economics in katowice was a rewarding moment; right from developing my communication skills, to event management, presentation skills got much more effective, creativity development, advertising exposure, making valuable career contacts and many more. To the international promotion team (Iza, Edyta, Kasia, Magda 1, Magda 2, Marek, co-interns and a host of others), I want to say a big THANK YOU for giving me an opportunity to work with you and also creating a comfortable environment. You guys are simply the best! ;)

Getting back to Finland seems pretty strange. I am finding it difficult to get back into the Finnish system for example; the language, I find myself speaking polish to people around me and in return I get a weird look. Another issue is food, I don't see myself eating the Finnish sausages any more, after I have tasted the best so far in Poland. For that reason, I had a stock of Polish kiełbasa (sausages) on my return to Finland. Nonetheless, it feels good to be back seeing old friends and those I can call my family. :)

I'm looking forward to the autumn semester at Savonia University of Applied Sciences Varkaus, which is the time to grab the BBA :). Now I can say; good things come to an end for better things to begin.

Episode 4: Silesia Days 2011

After several weeks of preparation for the highly anticipated Silesia Days 2011, it finally came to a successful end. The International promotion team of the University in collaboration with the Erasmus Student Network strategically organised an awesome weekend in Silesia region of Poland for International students from all over Poland.

This event focuses on the exposure of the priceless (undiluted) opportunities that exist within the region. Opportunities such as; quality education, rich culture, business opportunities, employment in multinational companies, recreational spots and many more.

The four days event attracted many international students from Universities all over Poland. The first day began with arrival of students to the dormitory in Katowice, followed by an integration dinner and party.

Although I wasn't available for the Integration dinner, I guessed everyone had a great time looking at their faces.

Nevertheless, I participated fully on the Day 2 of the Silesia Days. On the second day was the Conference day which had speakers from the Marshal office of Silesian Province, European Capital of Culture Katowice 2016 and ex-Erasmus students.

They call us ex-Erasmus students but personally I don't see myself as an "ex" because the ERASMUS spirit just never leaves you. I'm proud to be one and always would be.

The second day was rounded off with a trip to the brewery to taste one of the freshest beer (Tyskie) in Europe and afterwards a funky bus party just made our night spectacular. The Silesia Days programme continued on the 3rd day with Extreme Economics.

After all the challenges they came out to be the BEST!

Finally, the 4 days event was concluded with a trip to the Coal Mine and a typical scrumptious Silesian dinner. This annual event has experienced rapid growth since the past few years it has been in existence. Kudos to the brain behind this event, we international students appreciate it and look forward to staying/coming back to Katowice or any other place within the region.

Ps. Silesia is the most auspicious region in Poland.

Easter in Poland

Easter is yet another spectacular celebration around here. I have witnessed it in Nigeria, in Finland but none has been like the rich cultural heritage combined with this special Christian festival in Poland. Although some similarities may be found in some other Central European countries, the Polish culture still has it's unique influence on this highly recognised Christian commemoration.

Among many unique traditions is Święconka which can be translated to "The Blessed Basket". According to my observations, the basket consist of several festive delicacies but the essential ones are;

bread;
meat;
eggs (as a symbol of new life);
and salt (as a symbol of preservation and strength).

Easter Eggs

The basket is filled with the above listed food items amongst other items which is being packed and beautifully decorated. This basket is then taken forward to the Church on "Holy Saturday" (the Saturday before Easter Sunday) to be prayed upon by the Priest. After the basket has been sanctified, it is therefore regarded has been blessed and ready for consumption as breakfast on Easter Sunday. :)

On Easter Sunday morning, the family gathering at the dining table is another very important characteristic of the Easter festivity in Poland. I was opportune to share this joyous morning breakfast with Ania and her family. There we shared a little of every item from the blessed basket.

Another interesting ritual of the Polish tradition during the Easter festival is the Easter Monday. This day in Poland is regarded as "Wet Monday". A day which is specially set aside for boys to have fun in pouring water/perfume on girls usually till 12pm. This act of pouring water on girls is to wish them best of luck through the year.

I'm glad to be a part of this fascinating Polish traditions which makes my love for Poland grow stronger and stronger. Finally, I would like to kindly ask everyone that has read this article to please have a minute of silence for the victims of this celebration. :(....

Live...Love...Share (Nationwide pool party)

It's about half way gone into one of the most beautiful seasons, spring. And just before we know it, another year will pass by so quickly. It's amazing to see how growth rapidly takes place, how a child has turn into an adult and the next thing you know is how an adult has turn into a child. But still growth is beautiful, I see it in nature with the environment surrounded by the beauty of blooming flowers after a long cold winter.

Despite all that, this change has unfortunately affected many people out there causing bad state of health. One thing I know for sure is that, it's temporary! So please, if you are one of those who are terribly down physically or mentally...CHANGE is CERTAIN!

Team Erasmus

There are many great opportunities out there that are in its simplest form if only you can open up your inner mind to accept it when it comes. An example is a recent event I took part in which made me do things I had never done before but made me see life from another perspective.

Well, I guess the picture says it all. I took part in a nationwide swimming competition. But I prefer to call it a nationwide pool party. This is because of the warm and fun-filled atmosphere at the swimming hall. Many Polish students in creatively designed costumes, you can see for yourselves:

Seeing the way polish students could humbly integrate with we foreign students is highly commendable. It was a great experience for the team of ERASMUS students from the University of Economics in Katowice. And finally, I would say these few words; Life is short! Live, Love, Share and take a leap of faith to participate in the little things that make life worth living!

Laser house to Ice rink

Life in Katowice could be much more exciting if you know the right places, move with the right set of people and finally utilize your spare time to it's max! So far in Katowice, I have been able to live my dreams and on the other hand I'm able to put my fears behind me.

Among many other interesting things I have tried during my stay here, is going to the laser house and trying Ice skating.


Laser Maze: Just like the film - ENTRAPMENT

The laser house (www.laserhouse.pl) is another kind of game world on it's own. If you have seen the science fiction TV series Star Trek, you will definitely understand what I mean.

Despite the fact that the laser guns and other gadgets used looked really freaky, the game which lasted for 20mins (single round) was very stimulating. The game is quite similar to paintball because they both have the same goal of shooting at the opponent in other to get points. A small group of ten people could easily get the game started.

And now speaking about Ice skating, I have lived in Finland for over two years now but never could I boldly get my legs into those scary looking Ice skating shoes. But finally, I have conquered my fear and not only did I try the shoes on, I have also skated. ;) And Yes, I skated like every professional on his/her first day on the Ice rink. :D

One more language is GOLDEN

If only you speak all languages there is in this world, then this post is irrelevant to you. Better still you can leave a comment and share your experiences about either the motivating factor(s) for learning a new language or your learning process. That being said I would like to share the joy in learning a new language with you my cherished readers. ;)

As much as going to a different country (or even in the same country where different languages are spoken depending on the area you are in) from yours could be so much fun so are the challenges involved. Among other culture differences is the language, where you can either find it irritating or interesting to learn how to speak it. I have had the opportunity to be in two different countries (Finland & Poland) where the spoken language are clearly different from each other.

Numbers

Initially, getting to Finland I knew I had no other better way to survive the everyday life than to learn the Finnish language. In spite of the fact that English language is used for my degree programme, I still needed to learn one of the most difficult languages in the world. Moreover I had in mind that in other to get higher chances for a reputable job, I would need a very sound Finnish Language skills. Along my way there were difficulties, but still the learning process was very much fun. The act of learning "yksi, kaksi, Kolme,... one, two, three,..." again in the classroom felt so much relaxing and it brings back my childhood memories. And most importantly my finnish friends were always ready to teach me one or two new words every time we meet. These factors were very much motivating and I have since been eager to learn more of the language.

But now I face a new challenge which is learning the Polish language. I must say the scary part of speaking the poilsh language is from its pronunciation. I can remember vividly the trouble I faced when I needed to pronounce the old name of my host University (Karol Adamiecki...). But now the learning process has been much fun for me and a way to bring smiles to the faces of the Polish people. Smiles on their faces in the sense that, I walked into a mini food shop (Monika Sklep, Monika's Shop) to buy some eggs. Usually I always point at the things I wanted to buy, but Unfortunately in "Monika's sklep, Monika's shop" they don't have the eggs placed on shleves that one could easily see them.

But now, I had no other choice than to begin a conversation in whichever way I could because I needed this eggs so badly. The conversation started "Dzien dorby! Good morning" I said, "dzien dobry, good morning" she replied...I tried to explain to her in English and also managed to give her descriptions of what I wanted but all to no avail :(. Then a light sparked in me, remembering that Ania has once thought me the name of one of my favourite breakfast dish. Then I went on to say "prosze jajecznica, scramble eggs please", the shop assitant couldn't help but laugh her head off after hearing me say that.

Not to take too much of your time, I would like to conclude with 7 points why I think you should learn one more language, they are;
- Tool for facing the high speed in globalization,
- To enhance easy and better communication,
- To be accepted easily into a new environment,
- To show respect for other cultures,
- To attract people towards you,
- To put smiles on people's faces,
- To be able to express your love in the language of your future partner ;) (if applicable).

The hidden truth about the Poles

"What do you think about the Polish people?" This is one of many questions I am frequently asked by Poles on a daily basis. Unfortunately, there is no word or sentence that I can specifically say which will perfectly describe my thoughts about the Poles. Nonetheless, I experienced three different scenarios in Katowice which I would love to share with you.

I have just left the city centre heading home by tram. It was a rush hour so the tram was quite crowded but I managed to get a seat and just like every other day, people gazed at me with amusement. On approaching the second tram stop, I suddenly noticed that majority of the commuters on the tram quickly alighted. Then I wondered what was going on. Before I could say Jack! Three Police vans with their sirens on arrived at the scene.

Surprisingly a larger crowd boarded the tram almost immediately but it was very obvious that they were not normal commuters. This group of people had similar shirts, scarf, hats and they were shouting furiously while banging the tram windows. Yes, they were angry (visiting team) football fans who had just lost a match. Knowing this I said to myself "What the hell am I doing on this tram?:(" with the knowledge that such football fans could be very violent, I felt like sinking into the seat.

To add insult to injury, I am an obvious foreigner. How worse could it get?:( Although the tram was being escorted by the Police, it still doesn't guarantee my safety. A few seconds later I heard a whisper "murzyn, murzyn" negro, negro...that says it all, I got their attention immediately. The tram became awkwardly silent while the closest guy to me began a conversation "Skąd jesteś?" where are you from?, I replied "Jestem z Nigerii" I'm from Nigeria. They were all amazed that I was able to understand and reply in polish language. Luckily for me, at this time I knew a few sentences ;).

The guy continued with the conversation in polish, but then I was lost and I replied "Nie rozumiem, I don't understand." But they were all so interested in having a conversation with me, so they had to ask one of them who could speak english to come over and help with translation. The conversation continued with many questions asked and also they told me how much they love the ex-Polish national team football player Emmanuel Olisadebe a Nigerian.

Hearing all these made me feel so relieved, seeing that my presence could make angry football fans stay calm (at least for a while :D) and willing to have a small talk. My second encounter was also on a tram but this time, it was a more cheerful experience. A man was seated with his little sister/daughter, little did I know that they were talking about me. The man spoke to me in polish but I did not understand much of what he said :( which was a pity. On getting to my tram stop the little girl ran towards me and pointed at my wrist. I didn't understand much but I rolled up my jacket sleeves, not until then that I could understand that she was requesting for one of my wrist bands which I cheerfully gave to her.

Finally, the third experience is very fresh in my memory and it would forever last in my mind. This happened just last Saturday (5.3.2011) at a photo studio where I was to get an express passport photograph. There I met an old man, who gracefully welcomed me despite the fact that he is not the owner of the studio. He could only speak in polish but the owner of the studio helped with translations. The old man was very passionate about his speech telling me how much he loves Africa so much and also told me that he has a friend who is currently in Ghana and how much he would also love to visit Africa someday.

To round it off when I was about leaving, the man shook my hands firmly and kissed the back of my hand saying "Kocham Afryka, I love Africa". I was overwhelmed by his speech that I almost had tears in my eyes to hear one out of many say such about Africa. Having these three different experiences with the young, youth and old explains the compassion of the Poles.

Now, I would let you choose the right words or sentence to describe these poles. But there is one thing that is certain, katowice is a place where not only the University's staff are warm and kind hearted.

Hello my faithful readers, firstly I would like to apologise for the long delay between my last post and now. I have been up and down facing some challenges on my career path which I needed to attend to urgently but bearing in mind that I will never abandon my friends out there.

I have got many heart-warming feedbacks from my frequent readers who left comments on my post and also those who contacted me personally to tell me how my writing has inspired them positively. Hearing all these comments is a source of joy to me to know that my postings has made a positive impact on my friends out there.

Therefore I would like to use this opportunity to say a "Big Thank You" to all those who took their priceless time to give me a feedback and also to those who patiently read my post but in one way or another couldn't leave a comment but I am hoping that someday I would get a feedback from you.

It has been a long time from Christmas till now during which quite many things have happened in Poland and even during my short visit to Finland. I promise to get started immediately with my latest postings.

My Christmas in Poland

The beauty of the Polish Christmas celebration can be seen not just only in the decorations on the streets,in shopping malls, or at homes. But most importantly in the Poles themselves with the warm and hospitable atmosphere they provide for everyone around them.

It all started at the Christmas eve party organized by the Erasmus Student Network Chapter at the University of Economics in Katowice. A clever plan was made in the sharing of gifts among every exchange student. There was a secret ballot before the event whereby we randomly pick a person's name whom we would buy a Christmas gift.

As simple as it was it gave every student the chance for creative thinking and cheerful giving. Well the evening started out right with different entertainment by several nationals and the presentation of gifts by our "Erasmus Santa". The slightly low sound of Christmas carols played as a background music just complimented the beauty of our gathering.

The evening was completed with a buffet containing several tasty Polish Christmas dishes ;). Which I would definitely recommend you to try out. The evening turned out to be a great success and we all had a taste of the highly anticipated Polish Christmas tradition.

But as for me, my polish Christmas experience didn't just end yet! I was invited to share a traditional Christmas eve family dinner with Ania and her family. There I learnt about many more Polish Christmas traditions such as the candle light which is placed at the entrance of the house signifies that a stranger is welcome to have dinner with the household.

Also, everyone sitting at the table is obliged to try out a little of every food on the table. In addition the singing of carols is very essential and the shepherd mass in the Church is usually beautiful to witness. I had a golden moment with Ania's family and I felt much like I was at home although my polish language skills is still under construction :p, I fell in love with singing Christmas carols in polish :D.

Social Erasmus: A day with the Children.

What comes to your mind when you hear of a child, or rather children?:) The very precious innocently looking children, what do you really think? "They are so adorable" Yes, I think so too! :). They are beautiful, humble, smart, joyful, not yet brain washed which makes their ideas the most genius.

I am an Uncle to seven beautiful nieces and more still waiting to be born :D. I just simply love to be around children and to share the only moment they know which is HAPPY moments. I was really glad to hear that the Erasmus Student Network chapter of my host University organizes some social erasmus activities in which one of it is spending cherishable moments with some primary school children.

I was really excited that I had to forgo all other plans just to be part of the team of students to spend this one time event with this lovely children. Not only do we have to spend time with them but also to learn from one another, just great! Our task was to teach the children Mathematics (geometric figures & numbers) in our various languages and also to make Christmas cards.

The thought of being a teacher for a day sounded like a very easy task but believe me it's not "easy". My case was a bit more special because I had to teach the children in two different languages; my mother tongue Yoruba and Finnish. The children were very cooperative and willing to learn which makes the atmosphere more friendly.

The children had the opportunity to learn some things in seven languages (yoruba, finnish, spanish, french, romanian, german and english) from a team of dedicated Erasmus exchange students.

We "teachers" :D gave the pupil all we can, and the pupil in return appreciated our effort, time and most importantly patience. At the end of the lessons, the children showed their appreciation by saying "thank you" and also gave us some souvenirs to take home :).

It was indeed a special moment we had with the kids ;)

Erasmus Peacekeeping Mission

Kayo as a young boy used to admire the camouflage outfit, strength, power and courage of a Soldier. As a little child I watched quite many films where a soldier would single handedly rescue a loved one from the hands of the antagonist. It thrills me to see the courage in his eyes when embarking on such mission and the highly intelligent preparation being made.

I am sure you guys understand what I'm writing about here...Seeing the Soldier drawing up plans, cleaning and preparing his rifle, marking his face with paints and many more. For example such film is the legendary "Commando".

After many years little did I know that I will be part of such "Rescue Mission". I and other exchange students had the opportunity to enjoy a very interesting Paintball game. Firstly, the game started out with the distribution of military uniforms and the helmet.

Well, after getting the uniform it was time for a distribution of weapons but first we had to go through few minutes of orientation on how to handle and use the weapon. And most importantly the rules guiding the firing of weapon. After which we were shared into two teams; red and green. I was on the red team.

The game started up right with the building of a camp base at the middle of a forest which was also known as the secured base. At the base we had our mission assigned to us and also we had to draw up an attack/defence strategy.

The game was painfully interesting and it lasted till dusk. I said "painfully" because the shots fired from the guns stung for couple of minutes. Nevertheless, the team was very much eager to accomplish the mission. At the end of the game we laid down our weapons, no one got hurt, mission was accomplished and peace reigned.

Or maybe not! :D

The new face of the University of Economics in Katowice

Sometimes we wonder, "where is life taking us?" At some point we wake up someday and find ourselves in a different world. There are several talents born in us which is yet to be identified but someone out there will help us dig out such unidentified talents if only we say "YES" to their offer.

Waking up on this day felt like any other day, feeling energetic with high prospects for something great out there. Just before I could say Jack Robinson, a lady approached me to ask if I would like to be one of the new faces chosen for the University. Thoughts ran through my head saying "Oh yea, it's a modelling offer!" :D

I didn't have any hesitation in saying "Yes" after all there isn't any complicated condition given as compared to the so-called modelling world. Here I am in the city of Katowice, having such offer at my finger tips all I can do is to grab it!

The process started almost immediately but first with a test photo shoot and there after the professional photo shoot session commenced after a couple of weeks.

The young man who made us look exceptionally beautiful :D

Ps. The classroom side of my Erasmus

Have you been wondering if I am here for studies or simply for social reasons? Well, frankly speaking I am here for both :D. But personally being on an exchange programme isn't all about travelling, making friends, partying, partying and partying. But most importantly gaining more knowledge of everything I see, feel, smell and hear around me.

I signed up for eight courses that will give me a total of 29 credit points, enough for one semester. And most importantly all the courses are very relevant in my field of study which is international business.

Studying at my host... Ok, lets digress a little bit :). I have come to understand a fact in Poland that when a student says "I am studying..." the person is actually seen as someone who is in Uni for party purposes and a fun seeker. But if you say "I am learning..." then you are truly seen as a responsible University student.

Therefore I would say learning at my host University is quite different from my home University in Finland. Well, this difference aren't negative ones but they are simply positive in respect to course schedules, course division, teaching method and a few others.

A very significant difference is the course schedule which is being divided into two different weeks; week A and week B. These weeks are scheduled to go in a cycle of one after the other in which some courses may appear on both weeks while others will appear just in one.

I like this because my selected courses are not just concentrated in a single week. In addition there is time to have some leisure activities such as swimming, playing table tennis and many more. For instance, on my schedule for week A's I start my weekends from Thursday evening (super :D) because I have no classes or lectures on Fridays ;).

Speaking about classes or lectures, which is a new form of course division for me. Here at the University, most courses are been divided into two parts; classes and lectures. The classes attendance is obligatory while the attendance for lectures are optional.

My classroom experience has been very educative and sometimes entertaining but still not all of them meet my expectations. Nevertheless, I find most of my courses here very interesting.

Mobile Party

Are you wondering what I mean by mobile party? You can simply think of it as a moving party. A new definition of party exist at my host Uni (the University of Economics in Katowice). Compared to my partying experience in Finland, England and even in Nigeria, this is completely outstanding. This is not a film trick nor a gimmick it's REAL!

Have you been on a tram before? Sorry I meant to say, have you ever been on a Polish tram before? Yes, then imagine the bustling on such trams been magically changed into a magnificent night life of happy people. OMG, I had a remarkable time of dear life...

...A night that will remain fresh in my mind for many years to come. Well of course there were lots of friend around to share this mutual joy of this special night which I guess for most of us it's the first time to be part of such a thrilling event.


We had a blast!!!

For about two hours we had a jolly ride in the funky tram within Katowice and a nearby city after which we decided to settle at a prestigious student club in Katowice city centre.

The missing puzzle

Oh no, are you still thinking??? Well if you still are, you don't have to worry any more because I'm here to provide you with the answer to the missing puzzle which would ease you from having a migraine :). As I earlier promised in my last post (The world converge in katowice) that I would share one common thing about the integration week with you all my valuable readers.

Well it's not so hard to figure out the missing puzzle considering the generation of youths we have nowadays. We are young, we are smart, we are beautiful, we are restless, we are energetic, we are adventurous, and so we party like rock stars!!!

The integration week was just next to perfectness with the memorable grooving parties we had...All around Katowice we had club tours that lasted for six days and we rested on the seventh day like it should be:D.

Similarly to one of my favourite animated series, Pinky and the Brain. If you asked me during this integration week that "what are we going to do tomorrow night?" I would gladly tell you "The same thing we do every night, Pinky - try to take over the clubs!"

The world converge in Katowice :)

Imagine a world of many cultures but one language, a world of many possibilities but one choice, a world of different traditions but one voice, a world of sharing, a world of friendship, a world of millions of smiles... In this world I have been and experienced.

There is a saying; "you save the best for the last"... Truly the global village event was one of it's kind. The event was planned in a way that every student would have to represent his or her country in this gathering. As you may know I'm a Nigerian but I live and study in Finland, therefore I had a decision to make whether to represent my country of origin or the country that provided me with the opportunity of being where I am today.

After a few consideration I decided to represent both countries at this event in a unique way. I went into the global village gathering feeling so happy dressed in my traditional attire and also made an attractive Finnish decoration at my table.

The atmosphere of this evening was spectacular and filled with endless joy in our hearts. There were lots of food, drinks, snacks and entertainment from different parts of the world that was shared under one umbrella of global love and unity.;)

This evening would remain in my heart for a very long time because it stood out amongst all other event that was organised by the Uni. Out of a scale of 1-10, I would rate this event 10+ :). And generally in my opinion the organisation of the whole integration week event was excellent. Less I forget I haven't told you guys about one common thing about the integration week, take a pause and try to guess what it was...

The world of beer ;)

Another interesting integration week activity was the visit to one of the most famous Polish brewing company; Tyskie. This was one of my most anticipated visit because I have always wondered about the working atmosphere for the workers. My imaginations about the workers have been a little bit on the edge, such as trying to imagine the intoxication level of workers :D. But to my disappointment we were unable to have a brewery tour due to insufficient time. Nevertheless, we had the opportunity to visit the brewing museum.

The Tyskie brewing museum tour was quite educative, interesting and above all beneficial :D. We had the opportunity to see a lot of beer related exhibitions and to gain more knowledge about beer production.

An attractive aspect of the tour was the way the brewery is being modernized to suite the current global level of technology. Although there is a necessity for high technology and modern infrastructures in the 21st century, but still the Tyskie brewing museum kept it's old traditions. There was a fusion between the modern and antique exhibitions.

Amongst other attractions was a 3D film screening that showed a brief historical clip about the company and it's operations. I also had the opportunity to send an electronic post card with my picture to a friend but it wasn't delivered :(... As the end of the tour drew closer, it was time to have a taste of one of the freshest beer in Poland :D. When I heard this, I said to myself "...thank GOD it's Friday." :D

...it's fresh, it's chilled, it's tasty, it's Tyskie!!! ;)

Flashback into the Miner's world

Believe me when I say that beneath the earth is another world of its own. A world that could make or break you. A world where you hear a crack of the wall and you start to recite your last prayer. The squeak sound of a mouse would make your adrenaline pour heavily. A world where you go in with your white garment and come out in black.

My journey with other interested exchange students into exploring the Miners world was quite thrilling and adventurous. On this faithful Thursday morning we started our journey by visiting the residential area of one of the Pole's most respected profession, Miners.

My exchange mates and I had a walk in the Nikiszowiec district of Katowice where the Polish economy builders lived during their committed service by doing one of the world's most dangerous jobs. The district has a unique architectural design built with red bricks for approximately 1000 workers which also include the availability of a school, a church, a post office, an hospital, a bakery, a swimming pool and a police station.

After seeing what the Miners world look like above the earth, we proceeded to see some of what the Miners experience beneath the earth. We headed for the museum of coal mine in Zabrze where we had a trip of 320 metres beneath the earth...awesome! :D

Remember safety is the watch word when going underground. Each of us were given a Miner's helmet as our head protector because the height in the coal mine is quite short and the easiest accident anyone could have is to hit his or her head against a metal or even when there is a shake beneath the earth one could have stones drop on his or her head. Therefore having the Miner's helmet on is very essential.

I remember that not only was the helmet essential for the Miners but also the usefulness of wearing a white shirt as a visibility sign. Back in the days of the Miners they didn't have access to electricity and all they could use was lamps and the use of white shirts when working underground.

Well the story wasn't so smooth for we tourist as well because we got to a point where we had to almost crawl on our knees for about 5-10 mins beneath the earth. :(

Nevertheless, it was a great experience for me and I guess for other students as well...Before having such tour beneath the earth, I have never had any thoughts about the Miners and how dangerous their job could be. But after living in the Miners world for almost two hours, my respect for them as grown so much and I really admire their courage and discipline.

Finally, we all made it out alive ;)

On the 3rd day of my integration experience was a visit to the Aqua park. A very warm day with a beautiful blue sky was just the perfect time to explore the aqua world.

Integration Games

The Integration week wasn't only about speech, speech and speech but also lots and lots of interesting social activities which were included in the programme that was made for us by the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) at the University of Economics in Katowice. One of the event was the City Rally game which is quite similar to the popular reality tv game show "Amazing Race":D.

The City Rally game was very interesting and it helped me to get familiar with my new environment by knowing very basic but important points in the city such as; the market square, the information point, church, theatre, book store, kiosk (place to buy bus and tram tickets) and many more...

The Integration week - Part 2

The week started as usual with all protocols duly observed. We were welcomed by the Vice-Rector for educational affairs Prof. UE dr hab. Wojciech Dyduch.

The Integration Week - Part 1

They call it mingling, I call it getting rich. Truly, we all want to be rich with money in our pockets or rather in our safe houses...But I have chosen more which is to be rich with people. For me, the integration week is just the time to start investing on true wealth called friendship.

Friendship found in the Poles, French people, Spaniards, Germans, Portuguese, Colombians, Taiwanese, and many more is just another reason to enjoy the beauty of life.

Making good contacts for the future is guaranteed in the midst of 81 other exchange students. I am very happy to be part of such a wonderful life time experience in Katowice. Thanks to ERASMUS :D.

In the hands of an Angel

Tiredness sets in after my long-haul train to Katowice. But getting to my rented flat was very easy with the help of my "guardian angel" who in this case is in a human form named Szymon Starzynski. I have had many previous contacts with Szymon before my arrival and I know what his voice sounds like on phone but I was also curious to see what he looks like. I added him as a friend on Facebook to have a sneak peak of his pictures and to learn a little about him.

Therefore recognising each other at the Railway Station wasn't a challenging task. Szymon was patiently waiting at the lobby with a big smile :D and we exchange pleasantries like we have known each other for so long. The first impression was very good and we connected right way. Truly he seemed like a guardian angel but this time sent by the University of Economics in Katowice.

Szymon helped me get to my flat as quickly as possible and thereafter told me a little about the upcoming integration week because all I wanted then was to have a warm bath and a cosy bed to lay my head to rest |-).

You can only get in it to know how cosy it is :D

Cheap flight but expensive time.

My flight to Poland.

I am just like you, I will always try to get my cost as low as possible and comfort manageable. Anxiety played a big role on my choice of arrival date in Poland. I arrived to Poland on 01.09.2010 via the international airport in Gdansk on one of the "student low cost friendly flight" Wizzair aircraft. Although it only took me a journey of 1hour 30mins to fly from Finland to Poland, I still had a long way to go.

While the plane was about to land at the Gdansk airport, luckily I was sitting next to the window and the first thing I saw was a high rise building with my favourite number (7) boldly written on it. From that moment I knew that my choice of Poland as the next culture to explore is next to perfectness if not perfect. Eventually, we landed safely and I proceeded to the baggage pick up to get my luggage, in no time I picked up my luggage and walked in the direction of the bus stop to get a bus going to the central railway station.

The polish generosity started from the point of entering the bus, I know you will ask why? Don't worry I will explain, the situation was that I was on a long queue to get on the bus going to the city centre when it got to a point that the bus was full , no free seat, lots of people standing and the funniest thing for me was that the bus driver ran out of ticket sales.

The driver noticed that we were only five persons left on the queue, and then he asked the people standing on the bus to try create some space for five more people and which they happily did. The driver took us on the bus free of charge to the city centre and the good thing for me was that I didn’t have to miss the train going to Katowice.

Then the polish reality began to unveil itself little by little with my 10 hours train to Katowice having a delay for some minutes. But nevertheless, I have been able to stop by at the nearest KFC outlet to get some snacks for the long trip to Katowice. Not only did I base my choice of journey to Poland on cheap flights but I also wanted to experience the beauty of Poland from its northern region to the southern part.
