Much like the Etsy Browse pages the Etsy trending page has people upset. And just like the browse page I am going to say don't worry about it! Would it be nice to be on the trending page? Sure it would. But its not the end of the world if you are not on it. And frankly most of us will never get an item on the trending page.

The only thing that upsets me about the trending page is Etsy saying it is NOT curated and that is is picked by a computer. This simply cannot be true or else you would see a much different trending page. For example craft supplies are the single biggest selling item on Etsy. Yet there are no supplies on the trending page. Etsy says the computer program picks items based on favorites, sells, likes and treasuries. Well I have many supply items that have way more of all that then what is currently on the trending page. They have also said the program does not exclude one of a kind, supplies or vintage. Yet you won't see any of those on the trending page.

The other drawback to the trending page is it automatically makes whatever is trending; trend more. Hope that makes sense. This is why you see the same things on there day after day. But again none of us can control Etsy; we can only control our reactions. Just like I said that the browse page would not make a difference for the majority of us; neither will the trending page. Just keep listing, tweaking and applying SEO. That will get you way further than worrying about the trending page.

Here is my newest redneck baby camouflage blanket. I decided to put hunter orange fur on it for the redneck baby girls :)

Woohoo! I just got my order of Lion Brand Zpagetti T-shirt yarn in and listed on my Etsy store. I have to say I love the colors! Now I have to think of something to crochet with them. I am thinking either a purse or a rug. Hmmm.

Heres a picture of the yellow t-shirt yarn

This Zpagetti yarn is classified as a bulky number 6 yarn. I am thinking of using a P or Q hook.

And heres a cute little black shrug I made for Ruby. I still need to tweak this as it was my first time making a shrug.

Hope everyone is seeing lots of sales. February has been better than I thought it would be on Etsy. Remember the more you list the more you get seen!

Okay not to blow my own horn but I did predict on the Etsy forums last year that Neon was going to be big in 2013. And I was right! I went shopping the other day to just see what was going on for spring clothes and wow everything was neon. From American Eagle to JcPenny they are all showcasing neon clothes, accessories etc. I know most go by the Patone colors of the year but don't discount neon.

Having been a girl of the 80's I happen to love Neon.

I did find out the hard way that Hobby Lobby is out of all of their I Love This Yarn in Neon lights. Boy was I upset as one of my best selling redneck baby blankets uses neon orange (I call it hunter orange)

So I did some research and luckily for me Lion Brands Deborah Norville line of yarn has just come out with a whole line of worsted weight neon yarn. Woohoo! I will have this for sale in my Etsy shop as soon as it gets here (approx 02-15-13)

Red Heart is also coming out with a neon line yarn in March but it is bulky weight. I will also have this in my Etsy shop when it becomes available in March 2013.

For any of my blog readers that use yarn; if you preorder with me I give a discount! I can get just about any brand and color of yarn you may need.

So I have blogged a ton about selling crafts on Etsy, but what about the other big E website? I see so many people post in the Etsy forums that crafts don't sell on Ebay. Or all the buyers on Ebay want cheap items. Blatantly untrue! Today I sold 2 crocheted cowls and 1 crocheted baby blanket on Ebay. And yes I also sold some crochet/knitting supplies. I sell my handmade items on Ebay for the same (or higher) price that I sell them on Etsy.

This is one of the cowls I sold today my favorite one "pretty in pink"

All the same SEO things that I have blogged about here also apply to selling on Ebay. Write your titles with great keywords, good descriptions with SEO & keywords and the battle is halfway won. And for sure great pictures.

Others say the fees are too high. Ebay will give you 50 free auction listings per month and sometimes more. The only thing you pay on those is the final value fee and that is only if it sells. And you can put in the buy it now price which is invaluable. I always listed mine only a couple dollars apart. And 9 times out of 10 people choose the buy it now price. If they do a bid instead, many times it ended up selling for more than I sell it on Etsy. Win win situation. So for example if I have an item that I want 16.00 for I list it as an auction starting at 14.00 with a buy it now price of 16.00.

In Jan I opened an Ebay store since I have so many fixed price listings. With a store you only pay .20 cents to list a fixed price item for 30 days. Having a store gets you higher in Ebay search rankings. It has been well worth it to me! And I am now very close to making top rated seller status so then I will get 20 percent off my final value fees. I only did the basic store which is 15.95 per month.

In any given month my Ebay sales are at least as much or more than my Etsy sales. I will say it takes a bit of time to get going on Ebay. You do have to get some good feedback going (feedback is a much bigger deal on Ebay) and put in a bit of time. If you really think about it Ebay dominates Google search. How many times have you searched for something and you get a ton of results for Ebay? Plenty. Etsy is gaining on this but Ebay is still winning so far.

I love that Ebay (unlike Etsy) has a shipping calculator! All I do is put in the weight of each item and I no longer have to worry about guessing how much shipping will cost. I also love that I can list an item and give a percentage to my favorite charity and its all taken care of by Ebay/Missionfish. I do a lot of listings for the Susan G Komen Foundation as its a charity close to my heart. But they have tons of charities on there you can pick from and you decide the percentage. Love that!

The one drawback about selling on both is it can get very hectic especially when you get messages from Ebay customers and convos from Etsy customers in the same day. I have even had a customer buy one item from my Etsy store and another item from my Ebay store. Too funny!

Give it a try! If you use the 50 free listings you got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Like more customers and more sales!

Once again I have neglected my blog. But its for a good reason. I have been so slammed with orders that I just haven't had time to get back here. I hope you all are also having great sales whether you write, craft or whatever you are doing.

Many people have asked me how I got so successful on Etsy in such a short time. For people that followed my blog from the beginning; you probably already saw it evolve. For ones that didn't here we go.

I started out selling homemade jam on Etsy. It was very successful but a ton of work for a low profit margin. I started crocheting again after taking a hiatus for many years. Its like riding a bike, you never forget how. I posted a couple of blankets I made for my grandsons and charities on Facebook and people wanted to either buy the blanket or buy the pattern. So I jumped on it. I typed up my patterns and started selling them. I shut down the jam shop and opened "Kay's Crochet Patterns" on Etsy. At this point in the story I want to point out that I was pretty much broke. Which is a huge motivator. The plus side is it costs nothing but my time to sell crochet patterns.

My newest Crochet Pattern the Sherbet Scarf pattern

The patterns sold well and so did the blankets but it wasn't nearly enough to write home about. Then people started asking me where I got the odd supplies I used. So I thought "well maybe I should sell those on my Etsy store?" So I started small because I had very little money to invest. I think I actually started with 100.00. Sales started rolling in. I had to take half the money I made and re invest it back into buying more crochet supplies and used half to pay my bills. For sure this was the slower way to do it but it worked. I cannot tell you how many times I said to myself "if I just had an extra 500.00 to invest this would be so much easier!" Buy hey nothing worth having is easy right? Again the crochet patterns played a huge part in this because they are 100 percent profit. So I also kept adding new patterns.

I will add here that another part of my success was knowing how to use SEO to my advantage on Etsy. You guys know I wrote about this all the time here on this blog last year. You can go back and read those old posts because I guarantee you I would have never been this successful if I had not known how to use SEO on Etsy.

All through the fall I kept adding new supplies, pattern, blankets and branched out to knitting supplies. Every single month I reinvested in my business.

And now I will do something that almost NO ONE does. I am going to tell you my sales figure. For the month of December 2012 I sold 5500.00 between Etsy, Ebay and my own website. For the month of Jan 2013 I had 5200.00 in sales. So no Dec was not just a fluke due to Christmas :) Why I am saying the actual amounts? To give people hope that it can be done. I never dreamed this would be this successful when I started in April 2012.

I will also point out that I work way more hours on my business than I ever worked outside of the home. But to me its all worth it! If I want to take a couple hours off and play with my grandsons I can. And that is priceless!

Best wishes to everyone for a profitable 2013!

Etsy & Google Product Listing Ads

So sorry for the lack of recent posts. Thankfully sales have been going great for my Etsy store and website www.kayscrochetpatterns.com I hope others are also having some great sales numbers!

I am personally seeing great results from Etsy purchasing the Google Product Ads! I had estimated when they first announced this that it would have a huge impact and I do believe I was right.

I am averaging about 50 Google Product listing hits on my Etsy store per day. And the best thing is the conversion from views to sales for this is very high.

If you are not seeing the same thing in your Etsy shop chances are you are not showing up in the Google Product Listing Etsy ads. I went over this in an older post but will go over the main reasons why again here. If you are not getting a lot of views from Google Product listings you probably are violating the Google Shopping listing rules. In a nutshell here are the ones most people violate.

My new favorite skip stitch fleece blanket

Free shipping in the product title or description. I cannot believe how many people still make this mistake. If you do this Google shopping kicks your listing out. Customers are not stupid! If you have 0.00 in the shipping field they know that means free shipping. There are very few benefits to putting it in your title or description and the drawbacks are huge.

Keyword stuffing. You all know I am big on using your best keywords. But if your titles and/or descriptions look like a big keyword stuffed mess; then you are in violation. Also customers hate this and most say it looks spammy.

Using cutesy symbols in the description. Okay just stop with all the cutesy heart symbols! Stop!! Number one it just looks silly and childish and number two Google shopping will boot you out for it. Don't use any other symbols either. But I have to say I see more cutesy hearts than anything else.

Etsy has only agreed to pay for the ads until the end of December. I really hope they decide to extend this as it has been huge for our shop!

Wishing you all a great Christmas and lots of sales!

I cannot stand it trying to crochet and having my yarn fall on the floor or trying to constantly flip my yarn over while I crochet. I had looked at buying a "yarn buddy" or yarn lazy susan and could not believe the prices! Most of them I found were 55.00 to 60.00 each.

So........I asked hubby to come up with an affordable alternative. And he did it! Our yarn tamer is made from pine to be lightweight and functional.

Just got this finished yesterday and got some pictures with my new mannequin. This is a really fun stress free quick and easy crochet pattern to make an infinity or mobius scarf. This is a great beginners project or a great project for people like me that like instant gratification.

This crochet scarf uses Yarnbee Finale yarn. I had never used this before but now I am in love! It results in a really soft warm scarf due to the wool blend of the yarn. I also love this scarf as you can wear it so many different ways

To order this crochet pattern as an instant download go to my Etsy store Kay's Crochet Patterns

Etsy sellers are very upset about the new browse feature as you can see the multitude of posts regarding this.

I see so many sellers spending hours upon hours studying the browse pages and then re making their listings to get on one page of browse.

I personally think this is a huge mistake. Most customers are still using search to find what they want. Either Etsy search or Google (Yahoo & Bing) search. If you re do your listings specifically for browse they probably will not get picked up in search.

I agree that this was really lousy timing for Etsy to implement such a big change (right before the Holidays) but as I have posted many times; none of us can control Etsy. We can only control how we react.

My own views went down once browse started but my sales are still good and going up. So I am betting I am getting better quality of views.

I would suggest that sellers hang tight and only tweak their SEO. If you have good SEO to begin with, you should be fine. Etsy admin has said this many times.

Sellers time would be much better spent taking better pictures and using good SEO than changing listings to fit into browse.

I made a special section on my new crochet knitting forum just for Etsy sellers. If you need help with your SEO or just want to chat and vent come on by!

This looks like it could really take off. Its a much more polished and professional looking version of Craigslist that I think will appeal to many more people.

Unlike Craigslist, Taskrabbit makes you apply to get work listed and they do a background check on all their "taskrabbits"

Although it is only offered for live work in a few cities, there is a lot of virtual work that many could apply for, such as data entry, office admin, accounting etc.

Hopefully it will be coming to Ohio soon.

Facebook has announced that "Facebook Gifts" is coming soon. Sounds like an exciting opportunity. Although their page does not give a lot of details, it looks like it will be something a long the lines of being able to purchase a gift and send it to your friend or family member right on Facebook. Then the friend you sent it to adds their address and can change the order (size, flavor, etc)

To sign your business up click here to go to the Facebook link.

You have to give them all of your info (phone, address etc) and verify that you can ship 100 plus items per day. They also ask you to upload photos of your items.

I did it as I figure what do I have to lose? Could be really fun and exciting to get in on the ground floor. But none of us has any idea of what they are looking for.

I would think they would get this up and going soon before the holidays. If done right I think it could be great. You could send a birthday gift over to a Facebook friend with just a click! How fun is that?

Etsy Purchasing Google Ads What Does It Mean?

I was very happy to see that Etsy is finally going to put some money into advertising via Google Shopping ads. This should be really good for all Etsy Sellers.

But I do know that so many have listings in violation of Google Shopping Rules. If you are one of them hurry and get your Etsy store cleaned up! Biggest offenders that will get you kicked out of Google Shopping are the following:

1. Do not put "free shipping" or anything about shipping in your titles or descriptions.

2. Do not use symbols or unnecessary punctuation in your titles

3. Do not put policy info in your product descriptions

4. Do not go crazy keyword stuffing titles

All of these will get your Etsy shop kicked out of Google Shopping. I have other blog posts on this but I feel with Etsy now spending 1 million dollars on Google Ads it is worth repeating!

This skip stitch crochet pattern was so fun to crochet! I love the giraffe animal print fleece. And this edge looks great for baby boys or girls. This is an old stitch my grandma taught me 20 years ago. I notice most do not make this stitch puff like I do but I love the puff to it especially for blankets. This blanket was made with the skip stitch blade that we sell on our website and Etsy store.
I sell both the crochet pattern or the finished blanket for people that don't want to make their own.

Yep its been a bit since I have blogged as life as been so hectic! First we attended Backwoods Fest here in Thornville Ohio as a vendor for the first time. Wow I still cannot believe the crowds and the amount of crochet items we sold in 3 days. By Sunday we were pretty much sold out. We will definitely be back next year with a lot more to sell!

Our booth at the Thornville Backwoods Fest shack

I have been despertly trying to catch up ever since the show. I had so many requests from other crocheter's to make a crochet pattern for my shell stitch ear warmer and I finally have it done. I also decided it had to have a matching wrist warmer aka texting glove pattern. Here's some pictures of the crochet shell stitch ear warmer and wrist warmer:

The matching wrist warmer/texting glove

You can purchase this pattern on my website or Etsy store!

I have lots more to blog about tomorrow!

I have never in all my time with Etsy seen so many changes and experiments made in such a short time.

Many of them are obviously not well thought out. Which surprises me for such a large company with a huge pool of talent. There doesn't seem to be a rigid screening process for all the new ideas they are trying to implement. Its almost like Etsy is racing to see how many changes and experiments they can do in a short time frame.

Which has to be why the site has encountered so many outages lately. Crazy stuff.

What bothers me the most is sellers reactions. I see so many Etsy sellers just going nuts over the experiments and proposed changes.

Do not let the experiments and changes rule what you do.

What Etsy does is not in your control so let it go and do what you do. If I come across something that is out of my control I address it and then make a decision. I can either accept it and keep moving forward or I could close my Etsy store. For me the only correct decision for now is to keep my store and keep moving forward.

Do not let Etsy distract you from your true purpose which is to keep making beautiful things and selling them.

And again this is why I warn people to not only depend on Etsy to sell your items. Always use at least one other venue and promote your own website.

About a month ago an friend from Etsy said that I was crazy for not offering international/worldwide shipping on my items. I replied that it was too hard to ship internationally.

I mistakenly thought that you could only ship international by going to the post office and filling out custom forms. Which by the way my post office worker had no idea how to do. And I thought it was way too expensive.

That is when she told me that I could use Stamps.com (or other shipping sites) to easily and inexpensively ship first class international. I was just amazed! For lightweight packages that weight 13 oz or less you can ship most items for just a few bucks. And the really cool thing is stamps.com (or Ebay shipping) will print the customs form for you! Print, slap it on the envelope and your done.

Unfortunately this is not available on Paypal Shipping right now. I guess they used to have it and then took it down.

The only drawback is that tracking is pretty much not available so even though you get a tracking number it only tells you that it left and that it got there. Nothing in between.

We have doubled our sales since putting worldwide shipping on our Etsy store, Ebay listings and website.

I have to say its the best advice I have received ever!

Found this neat little tool today that will measure the success of your Facebook fan/business page.

I put my page in www.facebook.com/kayscrochetpatterns and it gave me some really good tips and advice based on what was on my page.

I had to laugh as it recommended I not post such long posts. I know thats a no no but sometimes I just can't keep it short and sweet.

To use the tool just go to this link. Grr Blogger must not like my link.

http://likealyzer.com/

Let me know what you think!

Oh and here is my newest crochet pattern I am working on. Still tweaking it but its a newsboy beanie.

Many of us that have a home business have found out the hard way that guessing on shipping can cost you a lot of money.

Never guess! Here are some of the basics I learned the hard way

1. Get a good scale to weigh your items

2. Buy poly bags to ship anything lighter weight. Poly bags will save you a ton of money over boxes. You can get them on Ebay cheap.

3. Always ship first class mail when possible. Anything 13 ounces or under can ship first class. Use Paypal shipping and get the tracking number for just .19 cents. You can also ship first class international using this same method. Never ship without a tracking number. Not worth it! I have a lot of items that only weigh 2 ounces. You have to check package/thick envelop to ship first class so put a peanut or a bit of bubble wrap in the envelope to make it puffy. Otherwise the post office may start charging you priority rate.

4. Pre weigh everything you sell in its packaging to be sure you are charging the correct shipping cost. Always throw in whatever your packaging costs such as .25 cents for the envelope, ink etc. But do keep your rates reasonable! Customers are savvy and know when they are getting gouged on shipping.

5. If you have to use a box check out USPS Regional Rate priority boxes. The boxes are free but you have to order them online. You cannot get them at your local post office. I use the regional rate A box a lot.

Currently I am trying stamps.com to make my shipping faster but I have to say I am not having a lot of luck with it. While I love the free scale they sent, the software is driving me crazy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I will update on this when I have used it longer. For sure if I could get it to work consistently it would be worth the monthly fee. If not I will try something else.

Do offer international shipping to increase your sales. It does make a big difference! If you always weigh your items and print your postage online, it is not at all hard to do as it will print your customs form for you.

People are always asking what crafts sell the best. Right now I would say the hands down winner is anything to do with babies.

Baby blankets, sweaters, hats, beanies, diaper covers, clothes, baby nursery decor etc.

Baby headbands for baby girls are also really popular right now and easy to make.

Apparently people stopped having babies for a few years when the economy sunk. Well now I guess they figured the economy is what it is and they better go ahead and have those babies because retail forecasts say we are in a baby boom.

The great thing is people will pay a good price for quality baby items. They don't seem to second guess it as much. Especially if its handmade and something not readily available in retail stores.

Every show we go to people just love our crocheted baby hats, blankets, booties etc. They usually tell us no one in their family makes handmade baby items and they want their baby to have something handmade.

And again I will remind anyone reading my blog that patterns to make baby items are a top seller. Hands down I sell more patterns to make baby items than any other thing I sell.

My baby mason crochet baby blanket pattern made with Bernat Baby Blanket yarn. Current top selling pattern of mine.

This fall Google shopping is going through some major changes. I have to wonder what the goal is?

Is it to be the top e-commerce site or the top search engine or both I guess?

I think all of us that sell online need to really pay attention to the changes.

Here is an article written by Google about the changes

Google Shopping Changes

They are running an incentive program if you sign up by Aug 15th which is right around the corner. I will definitely be doing this today.

I know some will just ignore it and hope that Etsy and Ebay are partners in it but I prefer to take things into my own hands.

They are also promoting the Google Trusted Stores badge. I think this too is going to be important going into the future. The only way to have this is to have your own stand a lone website.

Again everyone selling on the internet should have their own website!

My New Funny Crochet T-shirt I Crochet So I Don't Hurt People

My daughter and I designed the graphics for our new crochet t-shirts and had a ball doing it!

And we have this Keep Calm and Crochet On t-shirt that will be printed on a v-neck shirt
Now in stock and ready to ship!

Both are professionally screen printed t-shirts on quality Hanes t-shirts.

Here is Ruby wearing the V neck Keep Calm and Crochet On T-shirt

Although initially it sounds like a great thing its not. When this issue of Etsy buying up their most popular shop names and using them as Google ads came up; Etsy said the issue was an honest mistake and fixed so I didn't feel the need to write about it.

Now it has reared its ugly head again. You can see the forum post regarding this here.

Anyone can forgive a mistake the first time, but the second time it starts looking like its being done on purpose.

These are shops that have spent years promoting their shop name to get where they are. Etsy is buying their keyword name and directing people who click the Google ad to generic Etsy (or the new Etsy Weddings) NOT the persons shop.

This is wrong on so many levels I don't even know where to start. I am really starting to wonder if Etsy has thrown business ethics out the window. Sometimes its like rules we all live by do not apply to Etsy.

I think there are a lot of amazing things about Etsy and I love selling my crochet patterns there, but I am starting to worry about where it is all headed.

My New Crocheted Baby Beanie Pattern

We were without power for a week in the big Ohio storms but I am back!

I have been working on my newest crochet pattern for a series of crocheted baby beanie patterns. It started as this zebra baby beanie and kinda took off from there.

To purchase this crochet baby beanie pattern (or the hat already made) on my etsy store click here.

Crocheted Zebra Baby Girl Beanie

So then I thought it would look cute as a baby bee beanie

Then people complained that I only make girl beanies so I made a Halloween crocheted beanie version for a boy with a pom pom instead of a bow. Modeled here by my grandson Jr. I am now working on a Christmas, 4th of July and Easter version.

So we all know that Facebook is now charging us to get your business pages seen by all your fans. If you don't pay your posts only get seen by about 20 percent of your fans.

I thought I would try making a group for home based business's. The nice thing is there is no time line and there is no "promoted post" But to be effective we will have to have a lot of us on there.

Originally I was going to make it a craft group but I have so many friends that run other home based business's that go hand in hand with craft business. Some write e-books on how to be successful working from home, others have in home party plans.

I didn't want to leave anyone out as I feel we can all help each other. '

Feel free to join and promote your business! We can do it together and see if it works.
