I love it when a client loves color and is not afraid to use it!Unable to do any changes to the structure (besides hanging curtains and some art) I had to get creative to update this office space, changing it from the original "blah" to "upbeat and contemporary."

A few years ago, on our way to Disneyland (have I ever mentioned, we are Disney freaks?) we dubbed our Pacifica "The Black Pearl." We have packed it to the rim every time we go on vacation and it has never let us down (well, almost never). Here she is, again, filled up to the top, not with suit cases but with awesome accessories and that fabulous wing back chair for an office I am currently working on. Believe it or not, there was plenty of room left for more...maybe next trip!

2012 was a great year for Kaza Design! We helped many homeowners and business owners with beautiful designs and solved many design dilemmas! Towards the end of the year, we ventured out to bring some holiday joy to Utah's Best Vacation Rentals by decorating rental homes with beautiful Christmas trees, garlands and centerpieces. UBVR customers were thrilled to come to their "home away from home" fully decorated in Christmas cheer and they did not have to lift a finger for it : )

Also, Attask had Kaza Design decorate for their 300+ attendees Christmas party at the Red Barn in Thanksgiving Point. That place was MASSIVE big but we were up to the challenge and provided a great holiday atmosphere for them.

I have been decorating my front porch with those red balls for about 5 years now. This year they were the last thing that went up. Shortly after I hung them up I got a text from my neighbor and friend thanking me for putting them up. She loves how they look !! ( and so do I : )

This arrangement is a combo of fake and real components. Can you tell what is real and what is fake?

I love to decorate with these fun doors! the wreath is made out of coffee filters sprayed with a glossy stain for a vintage look.

A Living Room/Gallery- Before and After

The owner of this beautiful home is also an amazing photographer and was looking to convert her front room into a formal living room/gallery where she could meet with potential clients.

First order of business was to remove the paneling and add a new finish to the walls. Next was to replace the carpet with hardwood flooring. The new furniture needed to be a good contrast to the dark walls but neutral enough to not distract the eye from the art on the walls. The mercury glass and brushed nickle in the accessories reflect both the natural and artificial light to accentuate and compliment the art in canvas. One of my many favorite things in this room is the side table between the semi-wingback chairs. The brass twig design complements the nature in the homeowner's photography.

This is what my previous dining room set that I had for 11 years looked like!! It was still in very good condition, considering it went through 2 teething toddlers, 3 moves, and many craft nights! It is now in an apartment of a newly wed couple who are thrilled to have something decent to eat on.

Remember my last post, trying to decide which fabric to use on those fabulous chairs?

Well, I got lots of fabulous feedback and I do appreciate everyone's opinion. THANK YOU! It really helped.

OK, here it is:

The fabric I chose was...

Yep. I went with the Chevron! And I'll explain why.

Even though the pattern is trendy, it is monochromatic. It goes with everything on the table! (not that I try to match my food with the furniture - haha.) One of the comments I received, suggested I go with one and do seat cushions with the other, which I thought was BRILLIANT!! So, to those of you who liked the floral pattern better, do not fret! I only covered the wooden part of the seat with the chevron (and sprayed them with 3m stain guard spray )and will be making cushions with the floral pattern and they will be my fall cushions : )

I hope you like what you see as much as I do!

Design Dilemma....

HELP!!!

I recently got rid of my old dining set which we had for...many years. It was still in really good condition but I was ready for something different. Not necessarily new, since my table now is this amazing solid pine that I've had in the basement for 6 years!!! I know, How could I??
Now, on to the chairs. A few months back, a friend of mine called me saying her mom was down sizing and was going to get rid of 4 dining chairs. Without looking at them, I said I'd take them. And I'm so glad I did because they are FANTASTIC!!! (thanks Nicol!!)
The dilemma now... is which fabric should I upholster them with????? I love both patterns and both go great, but, ai ai ai, I CAN NOT DECIDE!!! This is where you come in.... let me know which one you like best:

Design dilemma: Where do we draw the line? the kitchen has a semi-open concept into the entry way, living room area and hallway, making it nearly impossible to just add paint color to the kitchen.

The Design Solution:

Add crown molding to redefine the kitchen area.

Now the new defined area is ready for a new paint color:

butter yellow.

Perfect for a kitchen/dinning area.

Under-the-cabinet-lighting was installed for added artificial light, aiding in food prepping.

We needed to balance the soft yellow with the bold black furniture, by adding some bright reds, oranges, blues, greens, and browns, with accessories, dishes and window treatments.
Complementing both the light paint and the dark furniture.

The mirror above the dinning room table adds depth to the small kitchen area.

The newly organized "catch all" area.

Lemonade, anyone?

This project started as a real challenge, but I think we came out triumphant.

Parade of Homes update

Here are some pictures of the basement apartment I staged for the Parade of Homes 2012. The challenge to staging this brand new apartment (which is for rent, by the way) was bringing color and character without changing the color on the walls.

The master Buedor.

I love, love, love these chairs, I mean night stands.... I can't wait till the Parade is done so I can bring them home where they belong : )

I have been given the amazing opportunity to help stage a new home for the Utah Valley Parade of Homes coming up June 8th - 23rd. It has been a lot of fun, but also a LOT of work!! It has taken me out of my comfort zone, speaking with managers, business owners and home builders, but I can say, I have grown a lot and have met a lot of amazingly great and creative people!
Here's a picture of what the house looks like now.

The builder is RKC Raykon Construction and the home is in Woodland Hills.

Rest of the Mapleton Re-do

Here are some before and after pictures of the family room in the basement:

This is a very large basement that had a couple of play tables and lots of toys.

Lots and lots of toys... but no furniture!

Now, it is a fun family room !

Additional pieces can be ordered and added to this Ikea sectional. Perfect for growing families!
The rectangle cushions are a fun addition to the sectional.

A fun and relaxing place to enjoy a movie or just sit and relax.

Next is the girls room.

they used to use this room as their tv room.

Before the basement was cold and eerie for the girls. Now they don't want to leave their new room!

The mural was painted by yours truly and the two little birds in the middle were a special request by the cute 6 year old. She said, "When I have a bad dream, I'll just open my eyes and look for my cute little birds and they'll bring a smile on my face and I'll be able to fall right back asleep!"

The theme for the girls room is "fun with nature" so it seem fit to just leave the bunk beds unfinished.

Now the girls can feel like they are outdoors, and they even have an "outdoor kitchen"

These are some before and after photos of the latest re-do. My client has 4 adorable kids under the age of 6 and she wanted to make better use of her under-the-stairs storage area. I came up with a design where the kids can spend hours on end reading, drawing and playing school in their new play area.

For the past month I have been working on redesigning a few rooms for a family of 6 in Mapleton. The oldest kid is 6 years old and the baby is 7 months old. The oldest two girls gave up their room, (which has been converted into the nursery) and are now sharing the biggest bedroom downstairs (lucky!) It is so big, it even has a kitchen!! ( a play kitchen, that is).

Below I have uploaded some pictures of the mural I painted in the girls room and some of the art work for the nursery.

A Second Chance in Yellow...

Here's an all-pine book case that my husband was thrilled to get rid off.
But, alas, I saw potential...

So I painted it a yellow/gold tone, thinking, if it doesn't turn out, I've got nothing to loose!

I wanted to do the background in a different color, but I took a different route and covered it with a chevron- patterned paper.

Here it is, all ready for Spring!! fun fun fun!
(Glad I believe in second chances!)

I recently helped a client add color to her home with just accessories. No new paint, no reupholstering, just accessories. She loves the color RED and her style is traditional. She has 4 kids and one on the way so I had to find accessories that were kid-friendly and the fabric had to be machine washable.

The curtains I found at Ikea are the perfect red. The cushions are custom made (by yours truly) and the decor comes from all different places like Taipan Traiding and TJ maxx!! Two side tables (in between the couches and one next to the big chair, underneath the family picture wall), lamps, and an area rug will make the room complete, just need to take it one step at a time. What do you think?

Latest Remodel

Back in late August I was approached by a friend who wanted me to remodel her whole house! I was thrilled to have this amazing opportunity and without hesitation, I rolled up my sleeves and went to work.

Her home is a tri-level home (a home with 3 levels). The lower level includes the laundry room, a spare bedroom (which is now her oldest daughter's room) an open area which we now call the family room, play room, office and piano area.

The middle level consist of the entry way, and the front room/receiving area or formal living room. Lastly, the upper level is where the kitchen, master bedroom with master bath, hall, bathroom, a bedroom (for her son and younger daughter) and the nursery.

Now that I gave you an idea in writing of what the house looks like, here are some "before and after" pictures so you can see it for yourself.

The first 3 pictures are of the lower level open area:

This is the whole area but divided or redefined as living room, office and piano areas.

The family room has a more inviting appeal by making better use of the space, and by the warmth and coziness that the accessories offer. Above the sofa are pictures of the kids that I printed on 12x14" canvas. We are awaiting the family portrait that will be placed in the middle between the canvases.

The office now faces the family room making it easier for Amy to keep an eye on the kids while she attends to her business and the kids attend to theirs by working on their own desk and computer!

Next is the middle level. I apologize but I do not have any "before" pictures!!! What was I thinking??? But just to give you an idea; a love seat used to be where the new window seat is now and facing the love seat on the opposite wall was a sofa. The piano was on the south wall and that was pretty much all there was. The window seat lifts up and she can store anything she wants! The bookcases offer more storage behind the doors and the new wains coating gives the room a more elegant appearance. The room is used now to have a nice visit with friends, to read a book on the comfortable expresso leather chair or to enjoy the warmth of the sun on the window seat.

And now the rest of the upper level...

here are some "before" pictures of the master bedroom:

Amy wanted to change the feel and look of her master bedroom. She definitely wanted to get a King size bed which she purchased in a nice dark mahogany wood. The ceiling was a faux brown suede color which we decide to paint white to make the already small master look more spacious. The color of the wall is now a nice, subtle blue/gray tone that brings serenity and tranquility to the room and also provides a nice contrast to the dark wood.

This chair is one of my favorite things in this room!

Now lets look at the kids bedroom before the remodel:

The challenge with this room was coming up with a design that would suit both her son and younger daughter since they would now be sharing the room. Amy had the advantage of having the bunk beds turn into twin beds which gave me the idea of separating the room without really dividing it or making it too boyish or too girlyish all around.
This is what I came up with:

Ally is an adorable 3 year old who loooooves to dress up as a princess and the twinkle in her eye just makes you smile. She loooves her side of the room and the picture canvas above her name. She told me she was the ballerina doing the splits (the one in green). : )

Roman is such a sweet, handsome kindergartener who is all boy. One day I saw him walking down the street dressed up like a cowboy and the first thing he said when he saw me was (as he tipped the corner of his cowboy hat) "Howdy Ma'am". Such a gentleman. His side of the room is aalll boy!

And last, but not least, the Nursery....

The nursery can be transitional from boy to girl by just replacing the curtains and some accessories. The bird on canvas was made by yours truly and the inspiration came from:

scrapbook paper!!

Design tip of the day...

I'm in the process of finishing the house I am currently working on. I have given my self until the end of the week to be done with the two last rooms in the house which are the kids bedrooms. It has been an amazing experience and I have truly enjoyed working with Amy : )

I promise, pictures will come soon!!!

Meanwhile, let me leave you with a designing tip...

If you are painting your walls lime green, bright pink or acid yellow, bring in contrasting colors like black, white and gray accessories into the mix. These contrasting colors will provide a much needed calm feeling.

Remember my motto - Life is too Short to Live in Beige!!
