The history of " COMEDY"

2011-08-22T17:07:00.000-07:00

Whenever i talk about COMEDY , i always wonder what really " Comedy ' means to us.

my definition of comedy is " human-being " itself is the form of art.

sadness, happiness, anger, and all emotions are already the forms of art.

Comedy play itself is the manifest of human life condition.

To me, " Comedy " is something that i dont feel acting..cus i feel it and i can be who i am rather than acting in drama characters.

here is the academic quote from the book about " the history of comedy"

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ORIGIN OF COMEDY

This document was originally published in The Drama: Its History, Literature and Influence on Civilization, vol. 1. ed. Alfred Bates. London: Historical Publishing Company, 1906. pp. 26-28.

The evolution of comedy is much simpler than that of its sister art, though as to its origin and earlier development there is little exact information. All that Aristotle can tell us is that it first took shape in Megaris and Sicyon, whose people were noted for their coarse humor and sense of the ludicrous, while Susarion, the earliest comic poet, was a native of a Megarian town. Add to this that it arose from the Phallic processions of the Greeks, as did tragedy from the dithyramb, and we have about all that is known as to the inception of the lighter branch of the drama.

At country festivals held in celebration of the vintage it was the custom for people to pass from village to village, some in carts, uttering the vile jests and abuse unjustly attributed to the tragic choruses; others on foot, bearing aloft the Phallic emblem and singing the praises of Phales, the comrade of Bacchus. In cities it was also the custom, after an evening banquet, for young men to roam around the streets with torches in their hands, headed by a lyre or flute-player. Such a band of revellers was called a comus, and a member of the band a comoedus or comus-singer, the song itself being termed a comoedia, or comedy, just as a song of satyrs was named a tragoedia, or tragedy.

The Phallic processions were continued as late as the days of Aristotle, and we learn from one of the orations of Demosthenes that the riotous youths who infested the streets of Athens delighted in their comic buffooneries. Pasquinades of the coarsest kind were part of the exhibitions, and hence, probably, it was that comedy found a home at Athens during the time of Pericles, for it furnished the demagogues with a safe and convenient means of attacking their political opponents. When formally established as a branch of the drama it had its chorus, though less numerous and costly than the dithyrambic choir, and the actors, at first without masks, disguised their features by smearing them with the lees of wine.

By Plato comedy is defined as the generic name for all exhibitions which have a tendency to excite laughter. Though its development was mainly due to the political and social conditions of Athens, it finally held up the mirror to all that was characteristic of Athenian life. By a consensus of authorities comedy has been arranged in three divisions, or rather should they be termed variations in form--the old, the middle and the new--and these it will here be convenient to follow.

Secret Hollywood Story / Charlie Chaplin and Japanese man

2011-08-20T14:39:00.000-07:00

My Hollywood Icon and respect is Charlie Chaplin.

He was a successful comedy actor but had long tough life against the authority for the sake of people and justice.

I had a gig making the documentary of charlie chaplin's 120's birth and i did the role of charlie chaplin's secretary " TORAICHI KONO".

I didnt know there was such a man, esp Japanese man working behind the success of hollywood golden time.

Toraichi had worked with Chaplin for 18 years during the hightlighted Charlie chaplin's career.

In fact, the famous charlie chaplin's trade mark " walking stick" was brought from japan, yes made in japan!!

Toraichi was the most trusted guy in charlie's career but it ended because of charlie chaplin's second Wife ... she was so distruscted by the charlie's special attachment to KONO.

sadly Kono returned to japan after working with chaplin 18 years.

Kono never returned to holywood even chaplin's many offers and visits to japan and just to see KONO....

Charlie's broken heart was one of the biggest tragedy and also the comedy.

I want to share this story for the name of most contributed asian in hollywood in the history of silver screen.

here is more info about this story

Salmon, caribou to be tested for radiation from Japanese reactor

Read more: http://www.canada.com/news/Salmon+caribou+tested+radiation+from+Japanese+reactor/5280582/story.html#ixzz1VWp4CLZN

Salmon caught off the coast of British Columbia will be tested for traces of radiation from the nuclear disaster in Japan, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northeastern Japan failed following the earthquake and tsunami that hit the country in March. The power company which owns the reactor said highly radioactive water (about 100,000 times the normal level) from the reactor had leaked into a trench, contaminating nearby water and the air.

"The monitoring of fish off the coast of B.C. is part of a series of measures intended to monitor the impact, if any, of the nuclear crisis in Japan," Alice D'Anjou, a spokeswoman for the CFIA, told Postmedia News in an email. The agency does not expect to find harmful levels of radiation in the fish, D'Anjou said.

"If it's sockeye (salmon), then it's a wise precaution," said fisheries oceanographer Tony Pitcher from the University of British Columbia. Sockeye salmon migrate quite far north and west in the Pacific Ocean into waters that are also crossed by currents coming from Japan, Pitcher said, so there is a chance the salmon will come into contact with organisms carrying some radiation.

Whether the salmon are affected by the radiation depends on what the salmon eat, Pitcher said, and also on the half-life of the particular radioactive isotope that entered the food chain from the reactor.

Pitcher said it is not likely the fish will reveal contamination, but it is important to test them and rule out the possibility. Other salmon species such as Koho and pink salmon do not migrate as far as sockeye and spend less time at sea, he said, so they are much less likely to be affected by the reactor failure.

The CFIA has already tested air quality, B.C. milk and Japanese imports and found no harmful levels of radiation. The sampling is already underway and will continue until September, D'Anjou said.

Meanwhile, Yukon's Department of Health also plans to test the Porcupine caribou herd for radiation from the reactor meltdown.

"There is no reason to believe any significant contamination from radiation has occurred," said Brendan Hanley, chief medical officer of health for the territory, in a statement released Thursday. "We just want to reaffirm that the caribou are safe to eat."

According to the Porcupine Caribou Management Board, Porcupine caribou are hunted mostly by Gwich'in, Northern Tutchone, Han, Inuvialuit and Inupiat peoples in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Alaska. The meat is a staple food and the hide is used to make clothing such as mukluks and parkas.

The herd has been monitored on an ongoing basis for 15 years for other contaminants.

Summer Festrival

2011-08-18T12:05:00.000-07:00

I have always a big fond memory of summer festival in japan.

when i was kid, the heat of summer and beautiful fire-works in the dark sky ,,,,,beautiful contrast with the background music of bon-festival.

i used to be excited about dancing with crowd...

do you have such memory in your childhood?

i want to share it with you.

here is the clip of my home-town summer dancing festival " yosakoi soran"

dynamic and youthful energy....uplifting music beat.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This festival is held in SAPPORO CITY (HOKKAIDO JAPAN). This festival includes not only local people but people from all over Japan and the world. It is a well known event attracting thousands of performers and millions of spectators.

Many years ago a student from HOKKAIDO went to a city called KOUCHI.There he saw the local YOSAKOI Festival and was so moved by it he wanted to bring the dance to HOKKAIDO.

The YOSAKOI SORAN Festival is a combination of YOSAKOI FESTIVAL forms from KOUCHI and SOURANBUSHI (fisherman's song) from HOKKAIDO. The first time (1992') the festival took place in HOKKAIDO only 100 people joined. The YOSAKOI SORAN Festival is now celebrated by more than two million people. Now summer in SAPPORO means the YOSAKOI SORAN Festival !!

FILM " It's a Wonderful Life" 1946 / classic

2011-08-17T20:21:00.000-07:00

This film is one of my favorite classic hollywood movies telling about life and value.

first i saw this film and tear came out of my eyes naturally...it made me think what is really the basic happiness we tend to forget in our daily life.

here is the story line....

George Bailey has spent his entire life giving of himself to the people of Bedford Falls. He has always longed to travel but never had the opportunity in order to prevent rich skinflint Mr. Potter from taking over the entire town. All that prevents him from doing so is George's modest building and loan company, which was founded by his generous father. But on Christmas Eve, George's Uncle Billy loses the business's $8,000 while intending to deposit it in the bank. Potter finds the misplaced money and hides it from Billy. When the bank examiner discovers the shortage later that night, George realizes that he will be held responsible and sent to jail and the company will collapse, finally allowing Potter to take over the town. Thinking of his wife, their young children, and others he loves will be better off with him dead, he contemplates suicide. But the prayers of his loved ones result in a gentle angel named Clarence coming to earth to help George.

What is " Happiness"?

2011-08-17T05:02:00.000-07:00

I always think and ask myself before going to bed," did you do your best and no regret if u dont wake up in the morning?".

My answer is " maybe not 100 % of my best , but i worked and met the right person at the right time to be meant to be."

I believe in " karma " and " mystic law of universe".

also i believe in one single person's capability and expand heart and mind to chnage the world.

my fav quote from the famous buddhist philosopher once said ,

" A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and, further, will enable a change in the destiny of all humankind."

i think it is the time for all human-kind to appreciate the people around and the nature of universe to re-consider and take care of.

without the peace of mind, body and world , there is no way to keep our earth safe.

I wake up in the morning and smile to the sky to say," thank you again for giving a chnace and i will do my best / and let me enjoy the moment of life."

i thank you all reading my blog and i thnak you for all of ur support.

have a great time!!!

Health comes first before everything!!

2011-08-16T07:07:00.000-07:00

Health issue is always my problem since i was a child.

we always realize how health is important whenever we get sick,,,but it is too late.

it is easy to loose our health but it is hard to build the healthy gene back again.

i always believe in what we have with birth within.

we tend to ignore our own self-cure system....we always take meds to kill pain or ease the health problem.

but ,,,have you thought about our behavior toward our body? are we really listening to our body's message?

our body is consisted of mainly water and pure salt. in that sense we need a lot of good water and pure salt to maintain as well.

there is something people believe long time in korea.

i want to share this secret salt with you.

eventually i have taken this salt for my allergy....amazingly it smoothed my skin and even made it better.

" BAMBOO SALT"

*
For the sub-materials for genuine jukyeom, we need the sun-dried salt from the Western Sea Coast of the Korean Peninsula, bamboo tree of more than three years old, pure yellow soil from deep valleys, pine tree firewood and steel furnace.
*
Those four major sub-materials should be Korean origin due to their unique ingredients.
*
The reason is grounded on the fact that certain herbs such as ginseng or bamboo have a totally different ratio of its major ingredients according to its country of origin.

*
Cut the bamboo tree trunk so that one end is hollowed and the other end is closed.
*
Then fill the bamboo tubes with the sun-dried sea salt and close the opened end with kneaded yellow soil from deep valleys.

*
The bamboo tubes are then stacked inside the furnace, and roasted with pine tree firewood.

*
While the bamboo container becomes ash, the melted ingredients of bamboo soak into the salt. The stuffed salt is also melted and then becomes hardened into white column.
*
· The hand mill crushes these hardened salt columns. Then new bamboo tube containers are filled with the crushed salt and heated again.
*
This type of heating process is repeated 8 times.

*
On 9th time, it is roasted at 1500 ℃ by sprinkling pine-resin on the pine tree firewood and other heating agents.
*
Through this process, the salt is beginning to melt and flow down like lava, and finally becomes hardened like big stone.
*
This is "Jukyeom" (which means "Bamboo Salt" in Korean). People can take this salt in a type of powder or crystals.

LETS KEEP IT HEALTHY!!!

My Fav POEM / RANDOM POST

2011-08-15T11:47:00.000-07:00

Traveler,

From whence do you come?

And where do you go?

The moon has set,

But the Sun has not yet risen.

In the chaos of darkness before the dawn

Seeking the light,

I advance

To dispel the dark clouds from my mind

To find a great tree unbowed by the tempest

I emerge from the earth.

TANABATA / Milkeyway japanese folk tale

2011-08-15T10:26:00.000-07:00

Tanabata, also known as the “star festival”, takes place on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year, when, according to a Chinese legend, the two stars Altair and Vega, which are usually separated from each other by the milky way, are able to meet. It is a Japanese tradition wherein people write their wishes on tanzaku papers (colorful, small strips of papers) and hang them on bamboo branches. People also decorate bamboo branches with various kinds of paper decorations and place them outside their houses.

The most common Tanabata decorations are colorful streamers. Streamers are said to symbolize the weaving of threads. Other tanabata decorations are toami (casting net), which means good luck for fishing and farming and kinchaku (hand bag), which means wealth.

Tanabata originated more than 2,000 years ago with an old Chinese tale called Kikkoden. Once there was a weaver princess named Orihime and a cow herder prince named Hikoboshi living in space. After they got together, they were playing all the time and forgot about their jobs. The king was angry at them and separated them on opposite sides of the Amanogawa River (Milky Way). The king allowed them to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar. Tanabata literally means the night of the seventh, and it’s also known as the star festival. It’s believed that Orihime and Hikoboshi can’t see each other if the day is rainy, so people pray for good weather and also make wishes for themselves.

Depending on regions, Tanabata is celebrated on July 7th or August 7th (which is around the seventh day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar) in Japan. Many cities and towns hold Tanabata festivals and set Tanabata displays along the main streets. It’s fun to walk through the long streamers on the street. In some regions, people light lanterns and float them on the river, or float bamboo leaves on the river.

Tanabata festivals in Sendai-city, Miyagi Prefecture and Hiratsuka-city, Kanagawa Prefecture are particularly well-known. Huge Tanabata decorations fill the main streets in these cities and attract millions of visitors every year.

Famous First Asian Hollywood Star actress / NANCY KWAN

2011-08-14T12:24:00.000-07:00

I was invited to the film screening at the egyptian theatre for the 50th anniv of "the flower drum song " , first and only asian musical hollywood movie in the history, and the main cast NANCY KWAN's life story of " TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN".

the documentary was basically about her life story how she grew up and landed in hollywood with big role. but most importantly it is about her beloved son who died young from HIV and the share of pain of loosing someone in life.....even big hollywood star gets the same pain and suffering....

personally i liked the film , because Nancy Kwan's biological mother and her relationship was very similar to my case...my mother left me when i was at 3 months old,,,nanct kwan 's mother left when she was quite young as well.....life is ongoing pain but it is up to us how we relate to it and not to be swayed..

i love my life and i love the ppl around me

thank you

and plz take care
