KCAC Flight Academy Announces New Flight Simulator

At KCAC Flight Academy, we're committed to providing our customers with superior training, excellent value, and ultimate safety. For that reason, we're excited to announce the arrival of the Redbird TD2 flight simulator to our flight line. This new simulator provides our customers with some unique advantages detailed below. G1000 Glass Panel Training

One of the most common reasons I hear pilots give for their reluctance to transition to glass panel avionics is the perceived complexity and the associated costs involved with getting comfortable with the new system in flight. With the TD2, we're able to offer personalized glass panel training at the student's pace. With the ability to replicate multiple scenarios, pause them mid-flight, and explore functions in-depth, the TD2 revolutionizes glass panel training - all at a fraction of what it would cost to complete it in an airplane!

Cygnus

With iPads becoming more and more common in the cockpit, the KCAC Flight Academy is excited to be able to integrate the iPad into our training scenarios. The iPad has the ability to add valuable situational awareness to any flight, but it can also become a dangerous distraction in the airplane. With Cygnus software, your iPad is wirelessly coupled to the simulator, making your favorite apps act as they would if you were really flying the mission being simulated. Now you can bring your iPad and train with it just like you would use it in flight. This video from Flying Magazine shows how Cygnus is taking flight simulation to the next level.

Instrument Currency

The most common reasons an instrument pilot falls out of currency are the time and cost involved. The Redbird TD2 can help with both of these. Our customers can now meet the requirements of 14 CFR 61.57 to prevent their instrument currency from lapsing. And if you wish, you can even complete these requirements without an instructor present. A Flight School’s Success with the Diamond DA20 Eclipse

Summit Aviation of Belgrade Montana received the Aircraft Owners and Pilot’s Association (AOPA) Flight Training Excellence Award for 2012. The award recognizes flight schools that provide an optimal training experience and encourage flight training best practices.

Summit Aviation operates a fleet of Diamond DA20, DA40 and DA42 aircraft. Owner Ben Walton remarked “Clearly this award is a testament of our Diamond Aircraft training model, flying with some of the safest and most efficient aircraft available. We are proud of our fleet and our team of highly professional instructors.”

Regarding the DA20 and what it has meant to the growth of his flight school and success of his students, Ben writes:

In 2005, the flight school was growing exponentially, requiring us to consider a fleet of aircraft. My plan for a new Cessna fleet was reconsidered after a friend convinced me to fly a Diamond before moving forward. I flew a DA20 and was immediately sold on its safe flight characteristics, economy, modern design and fun factor.

Fun to fly is very important to me as a flight school owner. After many thousands of hours in training aircraft, it’s easy to lose the thrill of flight. Our beautiful mountainous environment combined with the incredible visibility and fun flight characteristics of the DA20 has been a major key to our success. Student and CFI retention is well above average with our school.

The first DA20 was a tough sell to the students initially because it just didn’t look like other aircraft. After a couple flights with a few willing students, it wasn’t long before the bulk of our fleet was converted to Diamonds. The DA20 proved to perform better at our high elevation airport than other aircraft in our fleet. We could climb and cruise faster and at half the fuel burn.

We found that the DA20 nearly cut our fuel, maintenance and insurance in half from what we were seeing with the 172s. The ability to offer a brand-new aircraft for the same rental price as the competitors’ 30-year-old trainers gave us the leg up needed to succeed. We were also able to get through difficult economic times and high fuel prices, due to the fact our aircraft were so inexpensive to operate.

After more than seven years of operating Diamond aircraft, we have experienced an incredible safety record. The low stall speed, docile flight characteristics and strength of the airframe have contributed to our safety. Every pilot makes mistakes. It helps me sleep at night knowing my students are flying the most statistically safe training aircraft available. Success as a flight school is due to many factors. Our amazing staff, good business practices, effective advertising, safety programs and a focused effort have helped us succeed. I do believe, however, that if I did not take my friend’s advice to fly the DA20, our school would not be the success it is today.

How long is the flight?
Approx. 40 minutes

Are gift certificates available?
Yes, gift certificates can be purchased through the KCAC Flight Academy.

What are the hours of operation?

Flights run daily from Friday, 11/23/12 through Sunday, 1/13/13. Departure times are 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm.

What type of aircraft will KCAC use for the Plaza Light Flights?
To tour the Plaza Lights, you will board a four-seat aircraft (either a Piper Archer or Diamond DA40 depending upon availability) that will provide an intimate view of the Plaza Lights…from above! If you choose, you can wear a headset and your pilot will show you other remarkable highlights of the Kansas City skyline!

How many people are allowed on each flight?
Each flight can hold two or three passengers. This is your own unique flight experience and we do not pair you with other individuals that you do not know. Upon reserving a flight time, KCAC must know the total party weight to ensure weight and distribution standards are upheld to KCAC’s and the FAA’s stringent safety guidelines. While we want everyone to enjoy their evening, passenger safety is of our utmost concern.

What is the cost?
Cost is $165 for two people and $240 for three people. Tax and gratuity are not included. Children age four and under are free. All gift certificates expire on January 13, 2013 and are non-refundable.

How much notice does KCAC need in order to schedule a flight?
KCAC would prefer at least 24 hours advance notice in order to schedule pilots. Keep in mind that Friday and Saturday evenings fill up quickly and that the Plaza Lights shut off on Sunday, January 13, 2013. So the sooner reservations are made the better.

Where does the flight depart from?
The flight departs from KCAC’s Flight Academy (Building #5) at Johnson County Executive Airport. The KCAC Flight Academy is located at the SE corner of 151st and Pflumm in Olathe, KS.

What if the weather is bad?
KCAC will do its best to provide as much notice as possible if flights need to be cancelled due to inclement weather. If the pilot determines that conditions are not conducive to flying, KCAC will work with you to reschedule the flight for another time.

Are cameras and video recorders allowed?
Yes. Please advise the pilot before the flight if you will be taking video or photos. For safety purposes, no flash photography is allowed during the flight.

Who are the pilots?
KCAC has several professional pilots that have been flying for years and are now taking their experience and sharing it with others as they instruct at the KCAC Flight Academy.
