ALCM to host several events for planning and leading worship

The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians is sponsoring a number of events for those who plan and lead worship (not necessary to be an ALCM member to attend). There is a one-day event being held on Saturday, September 15th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mission, KS. See the link and attached pdf for more information. Topics to be covered include the role of the church musician, clergy-musician cooperation, resources, choral repertoire and rehearsal techniques, hymn playing at the organ, and children's participation in worship. Note that volunteers are needed to play for the hymn-playing masterclass, taught by Dr. John Ferguson along with Lara West. Volunteers should contact Linda Martin as noted in the booklet.

A similar event is taking place in Lindsborg, KS, on Sept. 29, in case that date or location is more convenient.

Overview:

The Director of Music is a part time position. The Director of Music is responsible for the development of interests, abilities and uses of music in the worship life of the congregation.

Guidelines for Position of Director of Music:

The Director of Music is responsible for the whole musical life of the Church in concert with the Pastor. At regular staff meetings, subject to the schedule of all involved, the director of music will work with the Pastor, other staff, and volunteers both to contribute creatively and to ensure thorough planning of rehearsals, practices, and all other music related activities.

Of special concern will be:

- ensuring seasonal variety and appropriateness of music

- challenging and utilizing the gifts of the choirs

- communicating necessary information to the parish assistant in a timely manner

- communicating with choir members effectively

- acting as a liaison for information between the Worship and Music team and the rest of the staff

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Direct, manage, and recruit for the existing Adult Chancel and Hand Bell choirs.

- Teach fundamentals of vocal and hand bell performance.

• Attend and participate in Worship and Music Committee meetings, worship planning groups and staff meetings.

- Work with the Worship and Music Committee when fundraising events are planned benefiting the music program.

- Submit annual budget requests through the Worship and Music Committee

• Help plan worship services 8:15 and 10:30 and special services within established guidelines.

• Bring strong conducting expertise and enthusiasm to the program.

• Maintain the music library

- Select and purchase music and choral supplies within the budgetary limits of the Worship and Music Committee.

• Arrange, supervise, and work with paid singers and instrumentalists. Arrange payment within budgetary guidelines of the Worship and Music Committee.

- Arrange and supervise additional solo/ensemble music for corporate worship as needed.

• Supervise and support the position of Organist

• Coordinate with the Christian Education staff in providing music for the weekly openings of the Sunday Church School program.

- Look for opportunities to develop new musical groups giving particular attention to the youth of the congregation.

• Cultivate positive team relationships with the staff, remain flexible and adapt to changing environment, maintain sensitivity to the diverse and dynamic needs of volunteer choirs, maintain a sense of humor and have fun.

Required Knowledge & Skills:

• 2-3 years of combined experience in the following areas:

- Director of Music

- Choir Director

- Choral Leader

- Vocal Teacher and/or Vocal Performer

Supervision:

• The Director of Music if supervised by the Pastor and the Worship and Music Committee, who are responsible for ensuring and annual review.

Overview of Benefits:

• Compensation

- Compensation shall be at the rate stipulated in the annual Church budget. The compensation package shall include vacation time and approved by the congregation in adopting its budget.

• Vacation

- Vacation time of 28 days per year, including 4 Sundays

- Vacations shall be scheduled and taken on the basis of the employee’s normal work week.

- Vacation pay may be drawn in advance by the employee immediately prior to taking vacation time.

- Vacations are discouraged during the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter

Wichita Chamber Chorale announces upcoming concert

The Wichita Chamber Chorale announces their Chorale Classics Concert as they continue the celebration of their 40^th Anniversary Year. The Chorale will present the prize-winning composition of the 2017 Kansas Choral Composition Prize “I Am the Lord” by Lyle Stutzman. This bi-annual competition, co-sponsored by Wichita Chamber Chorale and Senseney Music, awards a prize of $1,000.

In “Solid Ground” the Wichita Chamber Chorale gives voice to the experience of crisis, homelessness, resilience, loneliness, security and community. Health, shelter, employment, and the basics of life can easily be taken for granted, and one or two setbacks can turn a manageable life upside down. Along with Stutzman’s composition, the concert will include works by Eric Whitacre, Arvo Pärt, Tarik O’Regan and Wichita native Kirke Mechem.

The Wichita Chamber Chorale is pleased to share the stage with the 70-voice Wichita Community Children’s Choir under the direction of Karen Sims, in an afternoon that raises awareness, and shares a universal message of hope and inspiration through music.

And finally, Family Promise of Wichita, a non-profit organization will provide a presentation to bring awareness of the need in Wichita, and inform of their compassionate support to homeless families for achieving independence.

Oasis Chorale to perform at Kansas Choral Directors Association Convention

The Oasis Chorale will perform on Thursday, July 12, 7:30 pm First United Methodist Church in Topeka, as part of the Kansas Choral Director’s Association annual convention.

Oasis Chorale is composed of 40 singers from the United States and Canada, and conducted by Kansas native, Wendell Nisly. Drawing on their Mennonite hymn-singing background, the choir specializes in a cappella singing. They rehearse annually over a long weekend in the spring and reconvene for a tour later in the summer. As a volunteer choir, each member contributes from their own finances to be part of the choir and annual tour. Oasis Chorale has toured since 2003 in the U.S., Canada, and the British Isles.

Conductor Wendell Nisly is originally from Hutchinson, Kansas. He lives in Harrisonburg, VA and holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wichita State University and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from James Madison University. He also serves as administrator and educator for the Shenandoah Christian Music Camp.

Southwestern College is proud to offer Estill Voice Training Courses; Level 1: Figures for Voice Control and Level 2: Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities held in Winfield, KS this coming March 19 – 23, 2017. We are honored and privileged to have Dr. Kim Steinhauer, President of Estill Voice International, coming to teach the courses during these five days. She is a world-renown voice pedagogue, researcher, scholar, and teacher and a highly sought after clinician and presenter on the Estill model. Dr. Steinhauer was one of Jo Estill’s close colleagues during her breakthrough research.

We are working on an initiative for music teachers in western and central Kansas (though ALL are completely welcome) and would deeply value your feedback. First, if you don’t know us, the Ad Astra Music Festival is a summer music festival based in Russell that produces twelve concerts over three weekends each July. We want to involve you and other music teachers who teach part-time or full-time vocal music in central and western Kansas by inviting you to take part in the 2017 festival.

The festival has gained stability over the last three years producing professional, community, and educational music programs. With our resources, it only makes sense for us to host a place where the music education community can share ideas and address challenges unique to our area, securing a professional support system for each other. WCC Introduces 39^th Concert Season with Christmas Concert “Sounding Joy”

WICHITA – Wichita Chamber Chorale (WCC) opens its 39^th concert season in Wichita with its classic “Sounding Joy” Christmas Concert. This auditioned, semi-professional choir annually performs two major concerts. Each concert features the highest level of musicianship with literature spanning the entire breadth of the choral repertoire.

The theme for the Sounding Joy Christmas concert this year is “Simple Gifts”. Music over the centuries has celebrated the gift of the incarnation and the imitation that it inspires in humanity, regardless of nation or creed. Sounding Joy will be built around one of Bach’s signature motets, and miniature gems of the high Baroque, “Jesu, meine Freude” (“Jesus, Priceless Treasure”). An array of traditional and contemporary selections evoking the notion of giving round out the program, including Alfred Houkom’s stunning “The Rune of Hospitality,” and the Midwest premiere of Canadian composer Robert Teehan’s, “O Nata Lux.”

The Wichita Chamber Chorale is the premier choral ensemble in the Wichita area. Dr. Mark Bartel is the Artistic Director and Conductor. He is also the Director of Choral Music at Friends University and Conductor of the Singing Quakers.

Performances of the Sounding Joy Christmas Concert are Saturday, December 10, 7:30pm at East Heights United Methodist Church, 4407 E Douglas Ave, and Sunday, December 11, 2016, 3:00pm at Plymouth Congregational Church, 202 S. Clifton.

Hello everyone,

Tonight Tonight….(thank you Kelly for the idea J) Tonight is the night. At midnight tonight the system will lock all auditions out from being uploaded. An invoice will be generated for you from the system tomorrow. All deadlines have been synched with the KMEA ML Choir deadlines so that no one is confused. Payment to Steve Miller is expected to be postmarked by the 24^th of October.

Jenni and I will be asking everyone to help with the judging process. If you accept, you will have 3 weeks to listen to the recordings and judge them. This is adequate time to complete this process. We are all busy and I don’t want this to take forever so the more people that help the better.

You will receive an invitation from the festivalscores.com system. You will need to accept and create a judges account. If you can’t help with this process we understand, but please…if you do accept make sure you get the judging done. The rubric for our event can be found in the system.

I hope you have all enjoyed the change to this system. For myself as a director and as the chair it has been fabulous.

CONVENTION HEADLINER SESSIONS

Dr. Kevin Fenton (Florida State University)

Sessions 1 and 2: Conductor and Choir: Creating a Collective Story

This session will describe an approach to the rehearsal process that emphasizes the creation of a collective story related to music being prepared specifically and related to the identity of the group internally and externally. Those in attendance will work as members of the choir to develop behaviors of a story teller, and a sense of purpose as a choral ensemble. The first session will focus on teaching techniques for expression (Storytelling) and the second session will focus on facilitating the collective story through gesture.

Dr. Ysaye Barnwell (Composer, Conductor, and Founder Sweet Honey in the Rock)

Session 1: AN AFRICAN WORLD VIEW OF MUSIC.

This session will explore an African world view of music as an introduction to oral/aural tradition in music

Session 2: LEARNING AND SINGING IN AN ORAL/AURAL TRADITION.

This session will focus on rhythms, chant, spirituals, and other musical forms that will be taught and learned in oral/aural tradition.

Are you passionate about education? Do you enjoy adolescent humans? Are you a skilled and experienced piano accompanist and pianist? Well, keep reading if that is you (or you know someone that might fit this description)!! The Eudora Schools in Eudora, Kansas (7 miles east of Lawrence) are currently in search of a new full-time vocal music accompanist/choral assistant. If you know of an individual who might be interested, please pass on this information, or if you are personally interested in this fabulous (in my biased opinion) position, please contact me at your convenience. The main goal of this position is to assist the vocal music instructor in creating a positive learning environment for students. General requirements for hire include: i) High School Diploma or Certificate, ii) Experience and Skill as an Accompanist and Pianist.

Daily rehearsal/classroom activities include, but are not limited to: accompanying middle school and high school choirs and students; assisting in creating a positive learning environment for students; appropriately operating all equipment and musical instruments as required; supporting the value of education.

Physical requirements and environmental conditions include, but are not limited to: prolonged sitting or standing; occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials; occasionally requires stooping, bending, and reaching; requires travel for festivals and events; must work in noisy and crowded environments, requires additional time outside of the school day (before school, after school, and evenings).

General Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting in the instruction and supervision of students in class, at rehearsals, and at performances; accompanying the choir during rehearsals and performances; tutoring students as directed in sectional rehearsals, individual sessions, and small group sessions; preparing instructional materials and supplies; supporting and accompanying elementary school choirs as needed for programs and events; supporting and accompany middle school and high school bands as needed for concerts, festivals, and events; assisting vocal music instructor with organization of choral music library and classroom materials; assisting vocal music instructor with preparation for events and activities; assisting in the maintenance and inventory of equipment and supplies; performing with students at concerts, festivals and community performances; assisting and accompany the fall musical and spring variety show; offering opinions when requested regarding musical style and interpretation; assisting substitute instructors in the absence of vocal music instructor; working effectively with students, teachers, parents, community agencies, and other groups; assisting with supervision to ensure that students observe district policies during all activities; keeping abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques; adhering to all district health and safety policies; performing other duties as assigned by the vocal music instructor or administrative staff.
