This has been a tough year for Kona coffee supply. The harvest wasn't great and as a result, supply is low. We've been battling with supply issues for a year or so now. Luckily we're able to pull small amounts from our small farmers and make it through the year. We may not be so lucky this year.

Due to this smaller supply of Kona coffee, our Kona coffee cost has risen. As a result we are raising prices of our 100% Kona as well as our Hapuna Blend. So sorry for the inconvenience!

Finally...A Renewable Energy Plan for Hawaii

I remember my grandmother installed a solar panel system on her roof in the eighties. It was an investment in the tens of thousands of dollars. And I remember her worrying about the cost at the time. Yet, not even ten years later, she paid the whole system off and was enjoying electric utility bills under $20 a month...in Hawaii!

If you've ever lived in Hawaii and had to pay an electric bill, you know what I'm talking about. Needless to say, it's really expensive. Thankfully, the State of Hawaii is finally realizing the value of the natural resources surrounding the state. Abundant energy resources like wind, solar, wave, and geothermal are just there waiting to be utilized. And in the state which uses more oil for energy use than any other in the country, it doesn't take much to realize the smarter path.

This is a great video from Vice News about Hawaii's path forward to a sustainable future using renewable energy, and Tesla's involvement in that.

Oahu has the best of both worlds, it meets traditional Hawaiian culture with modern city life. Honululu is home to Universities and corporations, but you can also go relax on Waikiki Beach. You can embrace your adventure side and go hiking, or you can remember and educate yourself at the USS Arizona Memorial. No matter what you want to do, Oahu will be able to get you there.

One of the main attractions in Honululu is the USS Arizona Memorial. The memorial is on the USS Arizona, which is the sunken battleship from WWII during the Pearl Harbor attack. We recommend doing the audio tour, which can guide you through the memorial at your own pace, and you get to hear from survivors of the attack. This is great for all ages, and a must see piece of history while on Oahu.

If you are into surfing, or watching surfing, Oahu North Shore will want to be next on your list. If you are interested in watching professional surfers ride the big waves, it is suggested that you go in the winter, sometime between November and February. If you would like to try jumping in for yourself, then you might want to hit up this spot during the summer when the waves are smaller and more mellow.

If you want to drive to Oahu’s North Shore, you should stop at the Polynesian Cultural Center on the way. The Polynesian Cultural Center is a great learning experience to enrichen your vacation with knowledge about the people who who have lived in Hawaii. This center is one of the most popular attractions to visit while vacationing in Hawaii.

When people think of Oahu, they usually picture Waikiki Beach. This area is home to most of the resorts and hotels, and will probably be the most touristy area of the island. The resorts planned to be here for a reason, it has beautiful beaches! Wherever you stay you are going to be steps from the ocean. If you want to take a break from beach time, you can also find many restaurants and shopping centers near Waikiki. Waikiki also offers many trails and walks so that you can explore the area by foot.

If you plan to stay in the Waikiki area, there are plenty of options for whatever your heart desires. Many of the resorts in this area are five star, and because of this you will also see five star prices. You can stay at some familiar hotel names, such as Sheraton, Embassy Suites, and Holiday Inn, or you can try out some other resorts such as Waikiki Parc, or Outrigger Waikiki. If you are looking for a semi-cheaper option, but still a great stay, we recommend Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel. This hotel has received awesome reviews, and has a great location right near the beach.

If you talk to travelers who visit Oahu, they will almost always mention the Diamond Head hike. This hike is on the coast of Waikiki, and offers stellar views. Although this hike is a short one, it is very steep and should only be done if you are prepared to work and sweat. You will definitely be rewarded for your hard work though! Not only will you see the breathtaking coastline, you will also get to see parts of military history. Be sure to bring cash to enter the park, and note that the last entrance for the day is at 4:30PM.

If you want to explore Oahu through food, then Hawaii Food Tours is your answer. This tour company offers two different tours that take you around Oahu to experience the best food of the island. There is the “Hole in the Wall Tour” and the “North Shore Tour”. These tours have been talked about on multiple TV networks, including the famed Food Network. Not only will these tours leave your taste buds satisfied, but you will also walk away with an increased apprecation for the culture and history of the island and the Hawaiian people.

There is only one coffee farm on the island of Oahu, Waialua Estate, and it is located on Oahu’s North Shore. This coffee plantation is owned by Dole Foods. As with most other islands, this farm was also a sugarcane plantation before it was a coffee plantation. The sugarcane plantation closed in 1996, and closely following that they began crowing coffee on the land. There is now 155 acres of coffee growing land, and produces an abundance of Coffee Arabica typica. As mentioned in the other island posts, Oahu is an ideal location for coffee growing due to the nutrient rich soil that is fed from the volcanoes, and also the warm but wet climate. You can tour this farm if you are on the island, and we recommend doing so. The tour will give you a greater appreciation for the hard work that goes into your daily cup of coffee.

Kauai is known as the “Garden Island”, and is a perfect destination if you are looking for a quiet relaxing vacation. It also has adventure elements, such as kayaking and ziplining, but the small towns around the island provide a more relaxed atmosphere. This island is not as touristy as some of the other islands, and people describe the culture as being more laid back. The geography of Kauai provides a lush landscape, and you will be able to enjoy beautiful rolling green hills spotted with gorgeous flowers, along with the Hawaiian white sand beaches you have dreamed of.

Here's a great video on kayaking the Wailua river on Kauai:

One main destination of Kauai is Na Pali Coast. This is the most famous coastline of Kauai, and a top attraction for the visitors of Kauai. Na Pali translates into “the cliffs”, so you can guess what you will be seeing here. The many cliffs provide valleys and waterfalls to also view on this beautiful coastline. You can tour this coastline many different ways. You can take a boat tour, a helicopter tour, or you can hike on land and admire from the overlooks. Many travellers suggest viewing this coast during a sunset so you can enjoy all the colors of the sky as a backdrop to this beautiful vegetation.

Another thing you will not want to miss while visiting Kauai is Waimea Canyon. This canyon is 10 miles long, and you can drive along it and stop at the many viewpoints. If you drive along Hawaii state road 550 you can view the Canyon, visit the park’s visitor’s center, and then you will end at Koke’e State Park. You can stop here to visit the museum, which will provide you with information on the vegetation of the island, and then you can explore through the many hiking trails that the park has to offer. The park has an abundance of trails, so you will be able to find one for every level.

Since Kauai is such a relaxing travel destination, you may want to add a spa day to your trip. The island has many spas around it, and you can choose between top resort spas, to traditional Hawaiian spas that are in locals’ homes. Two spas to check out are ANARA spa and Spa by the Sea. It is also best to ask around once you get there to see if there are new local spas to check out.

Kayaking in Kauai is also very popular; this is because you can kayak through all the rivers and you don’t need to worry about rapids. This invites kayakers of all levels to enjoy in this sport. Kayaking is a great way to explore more of the beautiful landscape Kauai has to offer, and since you are in control, you can make it as relaxing or invigorating as you would like. You can rent a kayak and go out exploring on your own, or you can join a tour group and have an experience guide show and educate you about the island.

One of the top rated hotels to stay at in Kauai is the Koa Kea Hotel & Resort. This resort is great for everyone, but especially ideal for a romantic vacation. This would be a great resort to come to for a honeymoon or an anniversary. This resort is known for the quiet atmosphere and the great service provided by the staff. If you want to experience the simplicity of the island, you may want to spend some nights in the wilderness. You can camp at a few different beaches, some ones that we reccommend Haena Beach Park, which is a favorite among travelers and locals. Haena is located on the North Shore of Kauai. You can also camp in Koke state park, which even ahs cabins for you to rent.

As mentioned earlier, Kauai is known as the “Garden Island”, which means that agriculture is a very important part of this island’s culture and economy. Kauai Coffee Company has the largest coffee farm in the United States, which also makes it the largest manufacturer of Hawaiian coffee. Kauai has “ideal conditions” for growing coffee, with nutrient rich soil from the volcanic earth, the hot sun bathing the trees, and also the cool rain coming from the mountains. All of this combined makes for an abundance of coffee, and an increased exportation of coffee beans.

Maui is one of the most popular tourist destinations for people visiting Hawaii, and it definitely deserves to be. It is the second largest Hawaiian island, following The Big Island, and has plenty to offer to its’ guests. No matter if you are looking for a relaxing getaway or an adventurous vacation, Maui will suffice every traveler in you.

One popular resort area to stay in Maui is Ka’anapali Beach. Ka’anapali has numerous resorts to choose from, all right on the beach. There is a whole row of resorts, and there is a boardwalk you can walk along the beach to each of the resorts. When staying at a hotel on the Ka’anapali beach, you could enjoy all your beach time, shopping, and relaxation without ever having to get in your car. At the end of the boardwalk is a shopping center, Whaler’s Village, which is home a huge variety of stores, and also many different restaurants. Since it is right on the beach, you can easily walk down in your swimsuit to grab some Hawaiian Shaved Ice or Frozen Yogurt to cool down. They also have many restaurants for lunch and dinner, and many serving a delicious variety of tropical drinks. You will not want to leave your Maui vacation without trying a Mai Tai or a Blue Hawaiian. As far as hotels go, we recommend Ka’anapali Beach Hotel. It is an older hotel, but because of this it has all the Hawaiian charm that you hope for. You are treated like family, and they are always there for you when you need information. They even have nightly entertainment, such as hula dancing, that you can enjoy while resting from your beach days.

Right next to Ka’anapali Beach is the historic town of Lahaina. Lahaina has an assortment of shops and restaurants to choose from, as well as many art galleries. For Jimmy Buffet fans, you can eat at Cheeseburger in Paradise, however be prepared for their usual long waits. Lahaina is an old whaling port, and has been made into an artsy district. You can spend hours exploring Lahaina, day or night. Lahaina also has Napili Beach, which is called a “hidden gem” by many visitors. Napili beach is known for being calm and quiet, so this is a great choice for days when you are wanting more relaxation.

One main attraction that brings travellers to Maui is whale watching. Humpback whales make an appearance in Maui from November-March, but February and March hold the greatest chance of seeing them. Humpback whales migrate from Alaska to the warmer waters of Hawaii to breed. You will probably have a chance to see whales just from standing on shore, but the best way to see them is to get up close and personal on a whale watching cruise. We recommend Sail Trilogy, which offers smooth sailing catamarans directly from Ka’anapali Beach, unless it is too windy, in which case they will sail from Lahaina harbor. Speaking from experience, there are few things more magical than sailing next to a great humpback whale.

Another attraction that many people come to Maui for is the Road to Hana. Much like the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Life is a journey, not a destination”; this holds true for the Road to Hana. This is a long scenic drive that you can spend all day taking. Be sure to make many stops and enjoy the whole journey. The Road to Hana is definitely a popular tourist drive, so beware that it will probably be crowded. It is also a tight and curvy road, so be cautious and mindful while adventuring.

While in Maui, you will also want to stop at Mama’s Fish House, which is considered one of the best restaurants in America. It is located on the North Shore, and is nestled in an old beach house. You will find amazing service and delicious food in this traditional Hawaiian restaurant.

Another popular activity that you might not want to miss while in Maui is attending a luau. There are many to choose from, but two of the most popular ones are the Old Lahaina Luau and the Royal Lahaina Luau. A luau consists of a feast and live entertainment. You will get to try local Hawaiian cuisine, and also quench your thirst on Mai Tais. After you have satisfied your hunger, you spend the night watching and listening to amazing song and hula dancing. A Hawaiian luau is a great activity for families, and is something you will always remember from your Hawaiian vacation.

As far as amazing sights, you will want to visit Mt. Halaekala, which is a dormant volcano that reigns over 10,000 feet high above sea level. You must drive up many switchbacks to get to the top, but many visitors say it is their favorite place to visit in Maui. Whether you are an early riser or a night owl, you should try to catch either sunrise or sunset on top of this volcano. Since it is so high above sea level, be prepared for cold weather.

The Maui coffee industry has grown tremendously over the past decade. One of the biggest estate that grows coffee is the “MauiGrown Coffee” estate, which is 500 acres on Ka’anapali, near Lahaina. This estate offers four varieties of coffee: Yellow Caturra, Red Catuai, Guatemalan Typica, and the namesake Maui Mokka™. The Maui Mokka™ is the most unique to Maui; it is very small compared to the other varieties grown here. This seed originated in Ethiopia, and is harvested in the late fall. Like many Hawaiian coffee estates, the land that the coffee is grown on in Maui also used to be dedicated to sugar cane production, but for the past 20 years these 500 acres have been dedicated to growing and harvesting coffee beans to be enjoyed on the island and abroad.

Have you been to Maui yet? What was your favorite part of the trip?

Hilo, Hawaii

Hilo, which is located on the Big Island, is perfect for people who want to get the most out of their Hawaiian vacation. Because of its’ diverse geography, it has something for everyone, and is a great place to go if you are wishing to combine relaxation with adventure. Hilo has a variety of different beaches, and you can experience the uniqueness of many different sands, from black, gray, brown, green, and white. One way you can spend your day in Hilo is a trip to the Volcanoes National Park. Depending on how much time you have, you can spend a few hours, to a few days, exploring these natural wonders. The National Park’s website has great itineraries, broken down based on the length of your visit (http://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/index.htm). The park protects Kilauea and Mauna Loa, which are two active volcanoes.

The Volcanoes National Park has beautiful scenery, and you can spend hours just taking in all the sites. There are many places to hike and camp throughout the park, and experiences for many different fitness levels. If you are more into learning by reading, you are also able to learn a lot about the biology, geography, and history of the island. The visitor’s center is also worth a visit if you are new to Hawaiian culture, as it gives you a lot of information about Pele, the fire goddess of Hawaii. Hilo is considered the rainy part of the Big Island, so be sure to prepare for some rain, and be ready to spend some time indoors if you need to dry off. Luckily, the rains are usually short, and it is still warm outside, compared to the cold Seattle rains.

Depending on where you are coming from on the island, you might be able to make time to stop at a black sand beach in the same day, such as Punaluu. Punaluu is located South of the National Park, and it is one of the most highly visited black sand beaches. This a great beach to stop at for a picnic, or just a nice stretch break if you have spent some time in your car. If you’re lucky, you may get to meet a green sea turtle, also known as honu, sunbathing on the beach. The best time to observe these magnificent creatures is a time when the surf is low. Although these turtles are very calm, peaceful creatures, you should be sure to let them be. You can safely walk up to get a closer look, but be sure not to touch them.

If you are more of a night owl, Mauna Kea Observatory will be ideal for you. Depending on the time of year, you can even see some snow. Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano that sits 4,200 meters above sea level. You are able to stargaze at the many telescopes available to the public at the Visitor Information Station, which is at 9,200 feet. Remember, since you are traveling up such high altitude, that you it will be much colder than down at sea level, so prepare accordingly.

For the adventurer in your group, there are also many ways to explore. You can explore the lava tubes by going on caving tours, which take you through the lava tubes and also teach you about how they are made, and how they are used now. Near the National Volcano Park there is a lava tube you can stop at and explore, but this area tends to get crowded. Don’t let this discourage you, you can also view lava tubes at the Kaumana Caves Park, which is a free park to enter, and tends to be quieter with fewer tourists. The caves can be slippery, so come prepared with good shoes, and possibly gloves if you want to get on your hands and knees to explore.

(The video above is a great travel video on the Big Island and talks about many must-see attractions in and around Hilo)

Another beautiful stop that you don’t want to miss while in Hilo is the Akaka Falls State Park. The park is easily accessible off the Mamaloa Highway, you have to pay a bit more if you park inside the gate, but if you park outside the gate you only have to pay a dollar to walk in. The walk is paved, and you can spend a few hours marveling at this majestic waterfall. Come prepared to do a little hiking, some stairs are involved, but since it is all paved and relatively short, it should be fine for everyone in your group.

If photography is what you are into, Leleiwi Beach Park is a must see. This beach tends to be packed during the summer, mainly with locals. The shoreline is rocky with lava rocks, but with beautiful tidepools that you won’t want to miss.

There are many hotels to stay at while in Hilo, with a range in prices. One Bed & Breakfast that is very popular, and highly rated, is the Orchid Tree. This is the perfect quiet getaway, and located very close to many attractions, such as beaches and downtown Hilo. Another Bed & Breakfast that is well-liked is the Hilo Honu Inn, which is located in downtown Hilo. This is on the higher price range, but you are downtown and close to many other attractions, which makes this another favorite among frequent Hilo visitors. For more information on Bed and Breakfasts in Hilo and the Big Island in general, visit www.stayhawaii.com.

As Hawaiian coffee grows in popularity, so do the areas of where it is grown and produced. In Mountain View, on the way to the Volcanoes National Park, small farms are beginning to produce their own coffee. The coffee beans in Hilo differ from other parts of the Island because of the amount of shade and moisture; the coffee beans are usually larger in areas where there is more moisture, which Hilo definitely has because of the precipitation they receive. Hilo used to have a thriving sugar cane industry, but some of these farms are now being taken over by coffee farmers, such as Hilo Coffee Mill. The Hilo coffee industry is relatively new, and currently not as well known and booming as other areas of the Big Island, but it is a new area to keep an eye on for Hawaiian coffee.

Mahalo and thanks for reading! Have you been to Hilo? Please tell us about it in our comments section!

We are adding coffee brewing equipment to our product selection via Amazon.com. Amazon offers a lot of the same coffee brewing methods that we use everyday, and at great prices. We figured that instead of stocking these products ourselves, we'd just point out our favorite ones as well as offer reviews of our favorite ones.

So check out our Brewing Equipment section. We'll review our favorite brew methods and send you to Amazon.com to get the best deals on them!

Also let us know in the comments section if you want a review on a specific product. How do you drink your coffee?

Big congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks on winning the NFC championship. The Seahawks will be going to the Super Bowl in New York to play the AFC Champion Denver Broncos. The NFC championship game was awesome. The Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers in a tough, hard-fought game.

The people of West Hawaii, both visitors and residents, deserve local access to a progressive hospital providing excellent healthcare.
