LG has announced a new series of external HDDs for the South Korean market, the XD5 Mini. Designed specifically for use with netbooks, this 2.5-inch drive is available in 320GB and 500GB sizes and supports SATA-II interface for a faster and efficient data transfer. The XD5 Mini will be sold for $86 (320GB) and $120 (500GB), respectively.

Sony comes back to the gaming laptop market by releasing three new laptops, which as part of the Vaio Fall-Winter Signature collection. The Sony Vaio VGN-FW590FFD comes jam packed with a 16.4-inch LCD display with a 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard disk drive, a 2.53GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 processor and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics. Meanwhile, the Sony VAIO FW Nebula features a 16.4-inch extra widescreen HD display, an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (up to 3.06GHz) with Intel Centrino 2 technology, an ATI HD Graphics card with up to 1GB VRAM, up to 8GB of configurable RAM, up to 500GB hard disk drive or 256GB SSD, and up to 5.5-hours of battery life. Additional features include Bluetooth, HDMI, and a webcam.

Hallo!

Apakah rekan sudah pernah mendengar mengenai Hyper-V? Ini adalah sebuah teknologi virtualisasi yang akan menjadi bagian dari Windows Server 2008. Bayangkan bila terjadi sesuatu gangguan terhadap sebuah server yang diandalkan sebagai infrastruktur utama seluruh aplikasi bisnis dalam perusahaan. Maka dapat dipastikan seluruh proses bisnis dalam perusahan akan terganggu, atau bahkan berhenti sama sekali. Server pengganti harus segera disediakan, namun dibutuhkan waktu untuk melakukan proses instalasi ulang atau konfigurasi ulang. Dapat dibayangkan berapa banyak potensi pendapatan yang hilang dari selang waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk memperbaiki server dan mengembalikan sistem ke keadaan semula.

Konsep virtualisasi memungkinkan beberapa server berjalan diatas satu mesin. Hal ini menurunkan space yang dibutuhkan oleh server dan memaksimalkan utilisasi server. Fungsi utama dari hypervisor adalah memberikan lingkungan eksekusi yang terisolasi yang disebut dengan partisi. Setiap partisi di dukung oleh satu set hardware resources sendiri seperti memory dan CPU. Hypervisor akan bertanggung jawab untuk terhadap akses hardware.

Ada beberapa fitur menarik dari Hyper-V antara lain adalah dukungan untuk guest operating system baik x64 maupun x86 serta quick migration. Rekan juga dapat menjadikan instalasi sebuah Windows Server 2008 Server Core sebagai host operating system yang tentunya akan memberikan keuntungan dari segi minimal requirement yang dibutuhkan.

Nokia 6788 Debuts for China Mobile's TD-SCDMA Network

Nokia recently announced the Nokia 6788 device, the company's first device for China's domestic 3G standard, TD-SCDMA. Short for 'time division, synchronous code division multiple access', TD-SCDMA is a 3G mobile telephone standard, developed in China, that combines support for both circuit-switched data (such as speech and video) and packet-switched data from the internet. The Nokia 6788 device was designed in collaboration with China Mobile, the country's largest operator. Nokia intends to introduce other TD-SCDMA devices for the China market soon.

The Nokia 6788 device is based on the Symbian platform. It features a 2.8-inch QVGA screen, 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash, and 4 GB of storage. Designed by the Beijing Product Creation Centre, the new device incorporates traditional Chinese design elements and colours. Shipments in China will begin in late December.

The Nokia N97 device software update 2.0 was recently announced, adding user experience elements and functionalities. Ovi Maps Will Move Inside, Says Nokia Exec

Ovi Maps will be extended to include the interiors of buildings, probably within the next two years, said Michael Halbherr, VP of Social Location at Nokia, during the Q&A portion of his presentation at the Web 2.0 Summit, held recently in San Francisco. This extension will let mobile consumers explore the interiors of shopping malls, airports, hotels, and other facilities. It should also enable a new range of services, including internal maps, metadata about sites seen, and real-time user interaction, Halbherr added.

The idea may be simple, but making it a reality is not. Global positioning system (GPS) tracking ends when a mobile device loses its line-of-sight to the sky, so the interior mapping of a user's location must be done through cell ID triangulation and Wi-Fi hot spot identification and triangulation. 'There must be one logic system for location, whether it is through GPS, cell ID, or Wi-Fi', Halbherr asserted. While those systems are now separate, Nokia is working on their integration, he added.

When it comes to collecting the actual images that will form the interior maps, Nokia enjoys a head start, Halbherr said: 'We have millions of Symbian devices already out there, and each of them is capable of collecting data.'

How to Improve Mobile Web Usability

Mobile usability has a way to go. Earlier this year, consultants Nielsen Norman Group studied the usability of the mobile web, and they found it much worse than PC usability. One of the biggest reasons is speed, writes Raluca Budiu, a usability specialist with Nielsen Norman Group, in a new Forum Nokia article. Even people with fast smartphones are bound to encounter situations where their devices are simply too slow.

How can developers get around slow speed? Several ways, Budiu writes. They can use fewer images, if any, and no animation. They can include only the information that adds value for users. They can streamline interactions to as few clicks as possible. And they can give users feedback about the state of the download by showing a progress bar.

Forum Nokia to Help Train Developers in Singapore

In Singapore, Forum Nokia recently agreed to work with local engineering school Nanyang Polytechnic and StarHub, an info-communications company, to provide training and support for young developers of mobile services and applications. They are jointly establishing the Mobile InnoSphere Centre in Singapore to train both students from Nanyang Polytechnic's School of Information Technology and industry professionals. Forum Nokia will supply training, access to SDKs and software tools, and loaner devices. StarHub will provide infrastructure support, such as SMS gateways and location-based services (LBS). Both companies will promote and market innovative mobile solutions and services developed at the Centre. Some 300 students and industry professionals are expected to receive the training in Singapore over the next two years.

MSI has finally released the MSI Wind Top AE2010 that we mentioned several months ago. Intel Atom Competitor From VIA

VIA has recently unveiled the Nano 3000 series processors, which are actually a competitor to the Intel Atom CPUs. Raptor Gaming M3x Gaming Mouse

Raptor Gaming team is back with its new gaming mouse called the M3x. This right-handed mouse features a USB connection interface (via a 2-meter long cable with a gold plug), seven programmable buttons (including the scroll wheel) and a laser sensor with a dpi range between 400 and 4800. Not to mention, the mouse also comes with a weight-adjustment mechanism and a soft-touch surface. The M3x will go on sale later this month for a retail price of 70 Euro (about $103).

The Webbook is described by Litl as “an internet computer that works great with your favorite websites”. The Litle Webbook can be used as a standard netbook or, flipped round, as a TV device with an optional remote control and “TV style” control knob. It comes equipped with a 12-inch LCD display with an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, a GPU that can playback H.264 in 720p, a 1GB of RAM, and a 2GB of built in flash storage. What makes the Webbook interesting is that it has no hard drive because all data is stored on the Internet. Now it’s Twitter in your pocket

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a $99 device which gave you access to Wikipedia – and nothing else. I concluded that it would be nice to have one, but at $99, you could get much better value with even a cheap cellphone.

If I owned a WikiReader, right now I’d be looking at the entry for déjà vu. Replace the word Wikipedia with Twitter in that opening paragraph and you get the TwitterPeek, right down to the $99 price.

The wireless device does everything you could ask for when it comes to Twitter, including replies, retweets and direct messages. It can even display images from TwitPic (but can’t take and upload photos itself.)

The first time you use the TwitterPeek, you type in the details of your account and the device automatically copies across your settings including the people you follow. You can automatically update this list at any time, as well as manually adding followers by typing “f” and then the name of the account you want to follow. However, you can’t manually unfollow people on the device.

The data connection theoretically comes from manufacturer Peek’s own mobile network, though in reality the firm is simply leasing access from other networks. There is no per-use charge, but buyers must choose between paying $99 to get the device and six months usage, after which it costs $7.99 a month, or $199 to buy the device and get lifetime service. (That set-up is likely there to capitalize on people choosing the $99 option when buying it as a gift and the recipient hopefully getting hooked on the device.)

It’s very hard to see the audience here. Surely most people who desperately want constant access to Twitter away from their computer already have a smartphone. In that situation, it seems almost impossible that anyone could use Twitter so much that the costs of the TwitterPeek are cheaper than paying the relevant data costs on their smartphone, particularly as Twitter is inherently not a data-hungry service.

Even those who don’t currently have a phone which makes Twitter use viable could probably get much better value by taking the $99/$199 and putting it towards an upgrade to a smartphone.

This Android 2.0-powered handset provides a trial version of MOTONAV turn-by-turn navigation, which is free for the first 60 days. The phone also features a 3.7-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, a 5-megapixel camera with dual LED flash and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
