I’ve branched out a bit here at Keenpixel and have begun selling stock files on the popular GraphicRiver, an Envato network site. I don’t have much up there as of yet, but you can find some interesting vectors and cool textures.

Honestly I’m a bit surprised this Sandstone Texture Pack hasn’t sold very well. It’s an afternoon’s work exploring my local town and documenting the various types of sandstone (which we’re known for). 10 high-resolution stone textures for five bucks seems like a steal to me!

I’m sure you’ll find it an interesting read that will get you thinking about how you can stabilize your income simply by diversifying your efforts. I know it’s something that I’ve been thinking about personally.

1. Smell -Visit a local retail store that sells scented soaps or candles. Get into it and smell everything that you can. Take notice of what scents really appeal to you and which ones you find repugnant. When you’ve had enough and can’t stop sneezing, purchase the scent you were attracted to the most…it’s the least you can do after fingering the merchandise for the last half hour!
2. Sight – Take a walk down a new street or through a neighborhood you haven’t been to before. Explore an unused path at the local park. Pick a different bus for a change and experience some new scenery. Really pay attention to everything around you during these forays. Notice color and textures, interesting shapes that may stand out.
3. Touch – Visit a neighboring cemetery. Wander among the headstones until you find one that really catches your eye. Stop and take note of what it is your attracted to. Examine the texture of the stone and the coloration it may exhibit. Is it rough or smooth? Can you find any interesting images depicted? If you want to get the extra mile, bring paper and a pencil with you to do some rubbings.
4. Hear – Branch out from your usual Ipod playlist. Find a seat in a noisy park or on a busy street. Try to ignore your other senses and really pay attention to what your hearing. What noises are there? Can you identify them individually? Do you recognize any patterns?
5. Taste – Eat at an ethnic restaurant tonight. Try Indian or Vietnamese if you haven’t experimented with your food lately. Even a different side at lunch can wake up your taste buds. Order a different flavor of coffee tomorrow. Make sure you savor the flavor and distinguish how it differs from what you’re used to.

Regardless of what senses you’re using, the most important thing is to get away from the computer and focus on something new for a change. Periodic breaks from your work often have the benefit of allowing you to hone back in on what needs attention once you return.
