Performance Sport Canterbury is a new programme for promising athletes and coaches that addresses a recognised gap between participation and high performance in the region.

Anna Galvan was a member of the 2012 Canterbury Tactix competing at the ANZ Championship.

Programme Manager Pat Barwick says she is pleased to announced the appointment of Anna Galvan to the Athlete Manager role.

“The athletes will be those representing Red and Black and on the edge of national selection. They may already be in the National Junior category (U21). We will also be looking to select some outstanding young achievers who may reach national level within two to three years. Coaches will be selected based on their potential to coach on the national level within the next two to three years.”

Galvan will develop structures to support the region’s promising young athletes. She will identify selection criteria and provide athlete career and education advice as they move along the elite pathway of achievement.

The former Silver Fern brings 17 years of experience as a semi-professional athlete to the role. She was part of the New Zealand silver medal-winning side at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and, most recently, a member of the 2012 Canterbury Tactix.

Galvan has also been employed as High Performance Manager for Canterbury Netball, and Athlete Career and Education Advisor for the New Zealand Academy of Sport.

She looks forward to her newest challenge with Performance Sport Canterbury, as she takes a great deal of pride in “helping young people achieve their goals, and seeing them grow and develop as people.”

High Performance Sport Canterbury – Overview

In partnership with High Performance Sport New Zealand, Sport Canterbury will promote accelerated development in response to the issue many talented South Islanders face – head north or miss out on valuable support and performance opportunities.

According to Programme Manager Pat Barwick: “With many high performance programmes based in the North Island, it’s critical for Canterbury athletes and coaches to receive the right level of support and opportunity in their own region – to ensure they have a future here.”

Canterbury coaches and athletes who have demonstrated potential and exceptional dedication will be candidates for this new programme. Regional Sporting Organisations will also take an interest in this programme, to help their coaches achieve national results, and assist their athletes to transition from “red and black” to “black and white.”

The programme will be based on individual development, with sport-specific aspects managed by Regional Sporting Organisations. Initial numbers will be limited.

Final selections for coaches will be announced by the end of January to start the 2013 programme.

Enrolments for athletes will be invited through respective Regional Sporting Organisations at the end of January 2013.

A number of athletes from the Academy Canterbury Talent Xcelerator Programme administered by the University of Canterbury have been transferred into the Performance Sport Canterbury programme to continue their second year commitment.

About Sport Canterbury

Sport Canterbury engages over 100,000 people each year in programmes designed to share the benefits of an active, sporting lifestyle. As New Zealand’s leading regional sports trust, Sport Canterbury employs dedicated, experienced staff who are passionate about supporting teachers and parents, athletes and administrators, to enrich sporting opportunities for future generations. It’s about improving access for the wider community and simply seeing “more people, more active, more often.”

Shirley Tennis Club had become accustomed to challenges – from replacing earthquake damaged tennis courts and dealing with damaged clubrooms. Newly-elected Chair Andrew Morgan decided that the club should consider one more challenge: assessing its own performance and how to improve this in the coming years.

Andrew decided that the Sport Canterbury ClubMark accreditation process would provide an opportunity to review what has made the club tick in the past, while identifying areas needing further development.

Andrew said that the process provided valuable insights into the club, enabling them to look at existing club policies, whether they were still relevant and whether changes were required.

Sport Canterbury’s ClubMark accreditation process revealed that the club has a well-documented and well-organised administration base, well-organised financial systems and a band of willing volunteers.

Sport Canterbury’s Sport Development Advisor, Lorraine McLeod noted that the club has a strong sense of community; it provides a welcoming social atmosphere for members and visiting teams. It also provides coaching to local schools, and a wide range of age groups and levels of capability.

The Club has been presented by Sport Canterbury with a Bronze ClubMark, which recognises the work that has been done in the past and the additional effort that Andrew has invested to ensure the club meets all ClubMark criteria.

Shirley Tennis Club completed the tennis-specific ClubMark tool, which has three sections dedicated to tennis-specific issues. This tennis-specific document has been developed alongside Tennis Canterbury with the specialist areas covering topics that Tennis Canterbury would like all clubs to have in place.

Patrick Coady has been named Sport Canterbury’s Coach of the Month for January 2013.

Patrick Coady enjoys the opportunities that coaching provides to “give back” and develop new skills.

Patrick is only 19 years old and has been coaching the Christchurch Boys High School U14 Rugby team for three years.

Why is Patrick the January Coach of the Month?

Patrick started coaching when he was only 16 through a student coaching programme at Christchurch Boys High School. He has been coaching the CBHS U14 Rugby team for three years and this experience had some influence on his decision to take up the Bachelor of Sports Coaching Degree at University. Part of his course there saw him get involved with a younger team from St. Bernadettes School. He enjoyed this so much that he is considering doing the post graduate course for PE teaching.

Being actively involved with the Sport Canterbury Active Kids Holiday Programmes has also given Patrick more time and experience working with all age groups, and allowed him to hone his skills in managing young people.

What are Patrick’s responsibilities?

Patrick is the coach of the team and works alongside one of the parents to share the task. Patrick takes the forwards and they work on the game plan together. He likes to give the athletes input into many of the practices and decisions for the games as he sees them respond well to taking some responsibility. Patrick also enjoys learning from his co –coach too. Both coaches have a holistic approach and love to see the players grow not only into better rugby players but as positive young people as well.

How has Patrick made a difference?

For the last two years, Patrick helped establish two Year 13 Students as managers/coaches to connect with the players at school and help to build the culture of the team with the young players. Since both the coaches come from outside of the school, Patrick realised that there needed to be some leadership for the young team in the school and this has worked really well for their team.

What does he enjoy about coaching?

Patrick is a practical person who likes to be doing something – so giving something back and watching others learn and gain new skills is a buzz. Watching the players develop and enjoy playing together is very satisfying.

Sport Canterbury will recognise a volunteer community coach each month. The Coach of the Month will be awarded with a gift for their contribution to the community, club or school they support as a volunteer.

The coaches we are recognising have been nominated by their club members or school staff. They have been nominated for going ‘beyond the call of duty’ and giving young people a fantastic experience of participating in sport.

Coach of the Month award recipients receive a dinner voucher and coaching book in recognition of their special efforts.
