So, I created a new line of kitty beads that I've named Kaleidoscope Cats. I made these beauties with lead crystal clear glass (SO pretty) and fantastic furnace glass frit in various colours. These are shaped like my classic cats and they sport the minimalist faces like my Sophisticats. Each kitty is encased in an extra layer of lead crystal clear for added depth and sparkle. May I just say, WOW, do they ever sparkle! The colours are so bright and cheerful yet the kitties are sleek and sophisticated. Day two of the Kaleidoscope adventure found me creating these gorgeous little kittens! They range from 24-27mm tall versus the 32mm of my larger cats. Everything is so white and gray.. except me.. LOL!</div><div></div><br /><div>It was a really wonderful trip and I met lots of family members and friends. We had lots of great food and did plenty of shopping (I even bought FOUR dresses!). New Year's in Denmark is mind blowing. The entire country erupts in huge aerial fireworks and we stood outside for nearly an hour watching them!!</div><div></div><br /><div>I was quite sad to leave, having fallen in love with both the country and the people, but I knew if I didn't get back to the torch sometime this year, I'd go nuts! First I was working like mad to get ready for the Big Bead Show (which was awesome!) and then I left for Florida! I spent a fantastic three weeks back at home surrounded by family and friends. Above is a picture of my boy, Stefan, me and the teeny princess in my arms is my beautiful niece, Emelia Sparrow! She's such a little doll. Kaia came down and spent a week with me at my mother's house and it was so much fun. We painted nails, coloured hair, went on shopping trips and to the Everglades! I do have pictures of ALL of that but I tried to keep this relatively picture light.. ha. Heather and I were very close for years but we lost touch with all the moving. She's moved around a lot and so have I and we somehow lost each other in the mix. BUT! Fate and the universe decided that it was time for us to reconnect. I was checking out a book at the library (<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">side note</span>: I NEVER go to the library when I visit.. but, on a whim, decided to this time) and, amazingly, Heather was standing right there beside me in line!!! I squealed and we hugged and possibly hopped around a little when we saw each other. We quickly went outside and exchanged all our contact info and arranged to have dinner the following evening. It was so wonderful to see Heather again and she invited Stefan and I out to lunch a couple days later with her fantastic boy, Benny. Seriously, the four of us were all separated at birth somehow! The boys got along really well and we all talked and laughed and ate wonderful Vietnamese food followed by bubble tea. Thank you, Heather, for introducing me to such culinary delights! I'm hoping that Heather and Benny will come visit us soon. Plenty of South Floridians have probably done this at one point or another but it had been years since I had gone so we saddled up, slathered on the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">sunscreen</span> (UGH), put on hats and braved the Florida sun! It was so beautiful and we really enjoyed it. It was the most perfect day and we took plenty of pictures like the one above. The baby is in quotes because <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">HOLYMOLY</span>! When I picture a baby alligator, I picture something that could fit in the palm of my hand!! There were peacocks EVERYWHERE! They were so gorgeous and would eat out of your hand! Stefan showed us all that he is the peacock whisperer by getting the peacock to jump up and take the food. Candy is one of my favourite owls to make. I love the pink with the sky blue SO much. Actually, I love it so much that I also have a cat, cupcakes and coffee cups in the same colours. It reminds me of cotton candy (or candy floss for you British-types) and although I HATE cotton candy (what?? it's gross!) I <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error">lovelovelove</span> the look of the stuff :) It always *seems* like a good idea.. then I put it in my mouth and grimace and, hey now, what are we talking about???!!! I tried them <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-error">aaaaaaages</span> ago but it was in the very beginning and, well, they sucked. But now they're pretty cute, right?? Right?! *threaten.. bribe.. whine.. beg* Yes, I knew you liked them ;) These pretty cups of coffee are in my <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-error">webshop</span> as well and I'm loving them so much I almost don't want to part with them. Which leads me to this: I have a trick I play on myself. Whenever I'm making beads that I think are stupidly cute, I make them in colours that I don't particularly love (<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-error">okok</span>, any colour but purple will do it) so I can force myself to part with them. Cause, hey, I've got willpower and all but if these little suckers were in purple or, better yet, black with purple polka dots? Yeah, they'd be mine. No chance. They look so cute all arranged together, don't they? OH! The black mug in the picture is a bead replica of the boy's favourite coffee mug. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_11" class="blsp-spelling-error">Heehee</span>! I'm loving these food beads so much that I find myself making pairs of coffee beans or fried eggs while I'm thinking of other things to make. I made a few up yesterday in various styles and sizes. I just love cupcakes! (Speaking of which: I may have bought a cupcake salt and pepper set and a cupcake tote bag the other day. The boy wanted to know why I needed the salt and pepper shakers since I already have some gorgeous purple Fiestaware ones. I shook my head sadly and told him that he would never understand. It's all about THEMES, people!! When I have a tea party and use all my cupcake things, how awesome will it be to have salt and pepper shakers, too?!? My grandmother passed away last week. It's very difficult to be so far away from home at a time like this. Interestingly, I woke up that morning feeling very out of sorts. I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong. I decided, as you do, to visit Canterbury Cathedral. While I was there, I wrote out a prayer for my grandmother (as well as for my sister and her unborn daughter and a friend who recently passed) which is then placed on the altar during mass the following morning. I asked that god watch over her and keep her in his arms as her health has been failing for some time now. (Some of you will remember I took an emergency trip to Florida during the spring to spend some time with her.) A few minutes after returning home, my sister called to tell me that <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">Gramma</span> had passed in the night. I believe it was her spirit that moved me to make the trip and I am so glad that I did it. I'm sure she'll always know how much I love her.<br /><br />I felt inspired to create a series of beads in <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Gramma's</span> memory. She was always very supportive of my art and always asked how the beads were going :) She would tell me how proud she was of me and she was so excited when my beads and artist profile appeared in Bead Magazine (I took a copy with me to Florida and we read it together). So I created the above series which I entitled <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Granlee</span> Gardens and I am so pleased with how they turned out. I've been doing lots of baking this past week! The above shot is of my Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies from <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">Bakerella's</span> site. I iced mine with chocolate fudge icing and WOW are these awesome! The brownie is gorgeous and chewy while the cookie is more like a standard chocolate chip cookie. I made these from a fantastic USA compilation cookbook that contains loads of wonderful American recipes. The downside, of course, is that it's also full of ingredients that I can't get in this country. I've been looking into importing certain things and, failing that, making some components from scratch. Did you know you can make homemade Cool Whip? Yeah, I didn't either! Anyway, back to the muffins! These were very, very tasty but not really worth the extra effort of putting the jam INSIDE the muffins, if you ask me. They bake up light and fluffy with a gorgeous, slightly <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">crispy</span> top. These are FANTASTIC! The muffin is a basic recipe which I added nutmeg to for an extra bit of flavour. Once they're baked (but still a bit warm), they're dipped in melted butter and rolled around in cinnamon sugar. HEAVEN! The cinnamon sugar becomes a bit crisp and complements the airy muffin perfectly. Also: everything in my kitchen is cupcake-themed. They're a great accessory :)</div><div></div><br /><div>So how was your weekend? I had a nice, relaxing time catching up on episodes of True Blood and Doctor Who. My favourite Doctor is still <a href="http://www.christophereccleston.net/">Christopher <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_12" class="blsp-spelling-error">Eccleston</span></a> with <a href="http://www.david-tennant.com/">David <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_13" class="blsp-spelling-error">Tennant</span></a> in second. I'm still not sold on this <a href="http://whoismattsmith.com/">new Doctor</a> although <a href="http://whoiskarengillan.com/">his companion</a> is quite darling! Redheads rule ;) I also ended up making some lemon cupcakes and a super yummy chili. I really should have taken some pictures but, <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_14" class="blsp-spelling-error">ummm</span>, it didn't last long enough for that ;) I'm in a baking mood today but haven't decided what to make yet. I called my mother and got her American biscuit recipe (similar to scones) and I've been dying to make some so maybe <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_15" class="blsp-spelling-error">that'll</span> win out. I also have a craving for brownies, though, so maybe it'll be both! <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_16" class="blsp-spelling-error">Ohh</span>, I have all the stuff to make the <a href="http://www.bakerella.com/thaaank-you-betty/">chocolate chip cookie topped brownies</a>. However, plenty of my friends do so I decided to make a little worm bead to make them giggle ;) There is an option for your little worm army to wear halos, hence the angel worm above. I used one of my all-time favourite ribbons and I love the way it turned out. </div><div></div><br /><div>Any weekend plans? Last summer I did a whole series of garden beads that were very well-received and I really liked them. I had every intention of making more garden beads this summer but I've been so caught up in kooky kritters and lil bits that I never did get around to it! Anyway, so when I was approached about recreating the Hummingbird Garden, I jumped at the chance. Above is a picture of the finished bead. Relief work is super challenging for me and I really enjoyed the opportunity to push myself again. This is Ariana, my ex-pat friend, Jen's, daughter and my Munchkin, Kaia, getting ready to devour some cupcakes and cookies. Kaia's birthday is in September and it falls during the school year so I don't ever get to see her for her birthday *cry* Each year, before she returns to Florida, I have a mini celebration for her and yesterday's was tons of fun! We met up with Jen and Ariana (after they finally arrived.. AHEM) for lunch at one of my favourite Chinese restaurants then we came back to the flat and I served dessert. Pumpkin muffins, Confetti cookies and mini chocolate cupcakes soon disappeared and we sat and talked and laughed for hours. It was a fantastic day! Ariana stayed the night and the girls giggled together non-stop until I finally went to bed. Sometimes even *I* forget that I am, in fact, capable of making "grown-up" beads.. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">lol</span> :) In truth, I do prefer to make my whimsical, silly beads but I love raised <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">florals</span> all the same. It was a lovely day and my student seemed to really enjoy herself so that was good.<br /><br />What are you up to this week? I have plenty of beads to make since I'm a little behind due to how ill I've been :( I'm still not 100% but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.. which, in this case, means make beads so my customers don't kill me.. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">lol</span> :) Wednesday I'm meeting up with a dear friend for lunch so I'm <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">realllllly</span> looking forward to that. I've invited her back to my place for cupcakes afterwards so now I have to decide what to make.. again! Kaia also leaves on Sunday (*sob*) so I want to bake up a bunch of wonderfulness before she goes. I already imported the things I need to make Pumpkin Muffins (<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">OMG</span>, to die for!) as well as plenty of stuff to make all kinds of different cupcakes, brownies and other desserts (Banana Pudding.. YUM!). I ordered some French's French Fried Onions, too, because Kaia wants some Green Bean (<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error">haha</span>, it was 'bead' the first time I typed it) Casserole. I wish I could get all this stuff at a normal grocery store here because <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-error">OMG</span> is it ever expensive to import! I usually bring some stuff back in one of my suitcases whenever I visit home but I didn't this past visit (what was I thinking?!) I'll skip a detailed version of how mine is going and just say: I've been camped out on the couch for days in the throes of a vicious Migraine attack :( Ugh! But, anyway, I made loads of cute new <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">lil</span> bits last week! A variety of different hamsters including angels and fairies, I also made a puppy, a pig and a bit of evil.. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">heehee</span>. Of course her visit gave me an excuse to throw a tea party (which I <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-error">LOOOOOOVE</span> doing) and this is the dessert I served afterwards. I made peanut butter chip brownies and mini chocolate cupcakes topped with pink vanilla icing and chocolate icing. Stefan made the beautiful parfait-sundaes (as we're calling them.. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-error">lol</span>) and I just HAD to take a picture of it all. It looked so pretty.. and tasted even better!! We were fairly stuffed full of sugar after that!<br /><br />I'm off to (hopefully) melt some glass if I can keep the head pain at bay. I've been super busy (I seem to be saying that a lot lately) this week making lots of glassy goodies. Above are some of the beads I made so far this week. I really enjoyed making all the kitties and cupcakes and, of course, the lil bits! Those of you who know me (or read this blog at all!) know that I'm crazy about two things: cupcakes (MMM!) and tiny beads. I'm always pushing myself to create micro versions of my designs cause, in my mind, if it's cute in the first place it'll be even cuter if it's micro-sized! (Yes, I'm also obsessed with dollhouses for that same reason. Someday I will own a huge, gorgeous dollhouse [one word or two on 'dollhouse' - I couldn't find a definitive answer on that one] with tiny furniture and tinier plates of food and such. Yes, yes I will!)<br /><br />Anyway! So I started out with the classic cat designs then moved to the kooky kritters designs (smaller than the classics) then on to my newest collection, the lil bits and then, on Monday, I created the micro lil bit pair in the above picture. Those VERY little guys are a mere 12mm tall! They are sooooo teeny. Teeny makes me happy! So I giggled the whole time I was making them and maybe Kaia shot me a few, 'Well she's totally lost it!' looks (not that unusual). The best news? The lil bits have been really well-received and, in fact, I sold the ENTIRE hamster collection already! Apparently the sickness went straight to my brain and corrupted my creativity center because I've been making so many beads I can barely clean them and photograph them all! I'm in bead overdrive here. Yesterday I made 21 beads. This may not sound like a lot to you glassies who make sets but I primarily make focals. Twenty-one focals in one session is MASSIVE for me (even if they are little focals!). I could barely see straight by the end of it!<br /><br />Anyway! I am frequently asked if I make smaller versions of my kooky kritters and I've done a few custom beads but then I thought, 'Hey! Why not do a whole range?!' Thus the 'lil bits' were born :) Above is the beginning of this new collection which includes (so far) kittens, hamsters and aliens. YAY! Halloween is my all-time favourite holiday and, although it's not celebrated as much here in the UK, I decorate my place and dress up and bake lots of Halloween treats and enjoy the heck out of the day :) Now that I'm in my new flat I doubt I'll get any trick-or-treaters which makes me sad. I absolutely LOVE the kids coming to the door and getting to see all of their adorable (or spooky!) costumes. I had three students this week, all of them totally amazing, and it really hit me just how lucky I am to do something I love so much for a living. Yes, I work my tail off, but I enjoy every minute of it (<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">okokok</span>, maybe not every SINGLE minute.. I don't particularly like all the admin work!) and I'm supporting myself with my art. How cool is that?!<br /><br />Anyway! I had a meeting with my favourite creative director (read: my daughter) this week. I asked her for some ideas for new kittens and she (bless her amazingly artistic soul) not only came up with a bunch of ideas, but also drew me little sketches of each idea!! I wish I had a scanner. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Ohmygoodness</span>. She's so adorable it kills me! One of her ideas was to do a Frankenstein kitten and the above photo is the result. I FINALLY got my web shop back up and running as, YES, my studio is functional! WOOOOOOOO! It's still not exactly pretty but it's getting there :) I can make beads again.. YAY! My hair was bleached and then coloured with Rose Red by Directions. The dreads are a mix of Cherry and Fruit Coulis. I am sooooo happy to have my dreads back in! I feel like me again ;)<br /><br />Any plans for the weekend? Hopefully I'll get to go see Eclipse this weekend with Naomi. Yes, I admit it, I love Twilight! I'm also getting ready for Kaia's arrival!!! Kaia gets in Monday morning and I am super excited! She hasn't seen the new flat yet and I know she's going to love her new room.. it's so much bigger than her old room.. LOL :) I also have several students next week so it's going to be a busybusy week for me!<br /><br />Which brings me to Important News! I've missed the Munchkin tons.. even though she was with me for three weeks in March/April and then I travelled back to Florida with her. Really I just miss her all the time :( AND! She's going to be 15 in September. Ok, seriously now, may I just say.. W.. T.. F!!! Fifteen?! When the heck did this happen?? I don't remember signing any permission slips saying my daughter was allowed to, like, grow up and stuff! Someone obviously forged my signature! I'm calling.. someone! Who deals with this sort of vile criminal behaviour! THE FEDS! I just like saying 'the Feds'. Of course you don't have 'the Feds' in England. Huh. That's really sad. What do you guys say? 'The Yard'? Hahaha, you thought I was going to forget the whole point of this post, didn't you? It's ok. It wouldn't be the first time. *shifty eyes* So! As many of you know, I am a little compulsive (that seems to be a theme here, lately.. ahem) about holiday beads and I generally start making them realllllllllllly far in advance of the holiday. But! I think it's good to give my customers enough time to see the beads, buy the beads (please!) and make a holiday-themed piece of jewellery AND sell it prior to the holiday. Hence why I always start so early. Usually I start Halloween beads in July so, guess what? It's Halloween bead time! I absolutely LOVE making Halloween beads as it gives me an excuse (like I need one!) to make all the zombies, ghosts, witches, cauldrons, etc. that I want :) Watch this space for lots of Halloween glassy goodies in the near future :)</div><br /><div></div><div>5. Apparently I like to make a liar out of myself. I'm sure I'm not alone here. On the heels of saying that I rarely eat any of the sweets I buy, I sat down last night with a pint of Phish Food (mmmm) and, after sticking it in the microwave for 30 seconds (what, you don't do that??), I proceeded to eat HALF THE PINT. OMG. Needless to say I felt slightly sick afterwards but, hey, that's ok. Luckily I have a whole, new pint in there as well. One of my favourites is Powerpuff Girls. I don't know if they show it here in England but it is SO cute! The Powerpuff Girls are little superhero munchkins and my favourite is Buttercup. Buttercup is the one with the bad attitude, of course! Above is my attempt at a Buttercup focal. I'm SOOOOO pleased with how she turned out! RAWR!!! They rule! <p>In ice cream news: I learned a very important lesson the other day and today I had my chance to implement it. I walked to the shop and they had Phish Food back in stock! OH HAPPY DAY! So I might have bought.. two.. whole.. pints.. just.. for.. myself. *coughs* HEY! I deserve it! For.. subjecting myself to that awful Caramel Chew Chew madness! Or something! Anyway. Now I feel quite secure in the knowledge that my freezer is full of chocolatey wonderfulness. And on to the funniest fact about me (which I probably shouldn't share because I'm obviously a freak of nature.. although we sorta already knew that, didn't we?) I like chocolate. No, that's not the part that makes me a freak, calm down and wait for it! I like chocolate. I like sweets. I like ice cream and cake and all manner of sticky, gooey treats. I buy these things. I have every (EVERY!) intention of eating them, I swear, I do! But I don't. I don't know why. They're like a sugary security blanket. I like knowing they're there, just in case I decide I need them. But, in reality, I generally end up eating maybe a few bites of ice cream then the pint languishes in my freezer until it's so frost-bitten that I throw it away. MADNESS! I mean, WHO DOES THAT? Well, apparently *I* do that, but you know what I'm saying. Last week I threw away a chocolate muffin, a big package of Dairy Milk chocolate (OH THE HUMANITY!) and a perfectly good bag of M&amp;Ms. It's a sickness. Seriously. I need professional assistance!</p><p>Ok, then! Now that I have overshared.. I think I should get a move on. Ahem. Oh! I finally ordered new mini MOO cards and new address labels! After the move I had to write my return address by hand on all my packages and let me just tell you how annoying that is after you've become used to just using cute little address labels! EEK! So, new stuff on its way and I'm a happy girl once again :) It doesn't take much ;)</p><p>I hope you all have a beautiful day and have some sugar for me, ok?
