“All we have to decide is how to use the time given us." - Gandalf (from LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring)

The one
thing about life is that there will be change – whether big or small. In this
case, it’s big and I want to share it with you.

"It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business." - Michael Corleone (from the movie The Godfather)

At the end of August, my contract with KUT ends. So, my time with them and the lovely city of
Austin comes to a close. I have enjoyed my time there and I am thankful to have worked with a group of amazing people. I wish them great success in
the future.

"You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes." - Morpheus (from the movie The Matrix)

One of the exciting and scary things about transition is which path to take. Do you continue down the one that is comfortable or do you try a new path full of unknowns. I chose the red pill. I will be moving to the field of executive recruitment with a
firm in San Antonio. I decided the time is right to try something new. It is an exciting
opportunity and I am looking forward to it.

Moving to San Antonio is coming back home. It will be nice to be closer to family, old friends and UTSA football games (Go 'Runners!).

"Hey, there ain't no word in Sioux for 'goodbye'." - Walter Crow Horse (from the movie Thunderheart)

The hard part of any position is changing the relationship with the colleagues in your former field. I will miss working with my public radio friends to tell the story of the
human condition. I have enjoyed learning this craft from some of the best. As Kevin Close states regularly that public radio is the last place for civil
discourse and this is even more true in today's world. I know that will continue to be the case as the best in business are in public media. I look forward to staying in touch with you through our connections in social media, the phone and of course, seeing each other in person.

I'll be listening and will see you online.

"A thousand mile journey begins with a single step." - Lao Tzu

Here we go...

This is where the book "The First 90 Days" by Michael Watkins comes in handy. This book is a very good resource for leaders, whether you are new to the job or are a 'seasoned' pro, as it provides models to cope with such things as learning methods. His idea of a learning plan is something that can be used throughout one's career to help with continually re-focusing on the important things.

Another resource is the team you have with you. They may be able to direct or instruct you with resources that are already in place. This also allows for a time to strengthen relationships with team members that will pay dividends going forward.

Lastly, you can contact the vendor or client that is associated with the programs or projects you have 'taken' as a result of changes.

Most importantly, the key is not to panic. Take time to review and plan.

Good luck.

That's Where You're At!

Wow!

I can't believe it's been this long since I posted on this blog. Of course, a great deal of excuses are going through my head right now as to why I have not posted, but the simplest reason is I forgot about it.

Alas, one of the most difficult things about a blog is to put meaningful content on a regular basis. I have had many ideas and even have a web site from Wordpress at www.keithneisler.com.

However, I have been doing a disservice to myself. Blogs are places for content, not apologies. So, I have committed to posting at least once a week for the near future about something that intrigues me.

I have great places to get content as I now live in Austin! Whether it be Twitter, Facebook, Friendfeed or even this blog, participating in this web 2.0 technology is amazing. When I started inquiring about social media, I found it to be a fascinating concept but did not see the purpose. But since I have started participating fully, I found the power of these technologies and that this is not a 'fly-by-night' fad. It is very easy to get involved. I will be mentioning some of the people I follow on these technologies. I wish I could name them all, but there is not enough room.

I can tell you that with respect to Twitter, "tweeting" is very easy to do and there are people from every walk of life part of the community. It is very easy to set up and get started. In fact, many entrepreneurs of marketing, commercial and public media outlets are fully utilizing this technology. Some "tweeters" like @Scobleizer, @barefoot_exec, @mashable and @joegerstandt are very effective in making full use of this technology (they are also some of my favorite "tweeters").

Facebook is something that more than 140 million people are using to reconnect with friends, colleagues, relatives, communities and other things. I have been fascinated with FB. There are many things going on with this application that you can find yourself spending a great deal of time exploring it.

Friendfeed is an aggregator of the various social media technologies for you. When you start this application, you are able to link your Twitter posts, Digg, Share, and much more into one place. Robert Scoble of Fast Company is a big advocate of Friendfeed andI invite you to click here to get a better understanding of this powerful tool.

Blogging takes a little more effort as you should want to make sure you have some cogent thought on the topic of your choice. If you look around the internet, you can find some amazing blogs on all topics. Whatever your interest, I would guess there is a blog about it. If there isn't, then you can be the one who starts it. Some of my favorites include Mashable, Marenated, and Barefoot Executive. Why do they matter? I think Shannon Paul's Very Official Blog does a very good job of answering that question.

What does all of this have to do with society going forward: everything! I have barely touched the surface of the many applications and communities that are out there to explore, join and participate in. In my opinion, any person or organization should be a part of it for personal or professional development. Your voice, talents, and ideas are what makes the 'community' strong.

I look forward to the discussion here or on your own blog. Please let me know if you have a Blog or Twitter or another technology you want to share and build this online community.

Yes, We Can

What a great day!

The start of a new era in American politics and a spirit of what can be done if ALL of us do our part!

We have heard the famous words of John Kennedy,"Ask not your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Today, we listened as President Obama told us where we can start; with the retaking of those virtues and applying them to our days ahead. Truly inspiring words for the nation.

But we know that words are not enough...action is required. So my question to you is: what action will you take each day to restore the values that the President so eloquently spoke about today? "Walk the talk" is a phrase that has once again gained relevance in society and hopefully, will continue to be applied to all of us as we move forward. We will see.

Anyway, this is also the start of my personal blog. I have blogged as part of my job, but wanted the opportunity to be able to speak about any topic that comes to mind in these days of social media.
