I have a design dilemma. I can’t STAND my vaulted ceilings. When we built our house, my 6’4″ husband felt like he just had to have them, and I didn’t have a problem with it, so we put in vaulted ceilings. Of course, now that we have been living in our house for about 6 years, we both know that we would never put in vaulted ceilings again. 10 foot ceilings? Yes. Vaulted ceilings? No.

Why do I hate them? Because it is SO hard to make a room feel cozy with vaulted ceilings!! Never mind the fact that you are heating that space in the winter, so it gets cold. PLUS, when a lot of people fill the room, the ceilings make everything LOUD and echoey.

But, the real dilemma is, where do you paint? I’m not about to build myself some scaffolding so I can go all the way up to the ceiling. NOT gonna do it. I don’t care what you say.

To my way of thinking, that leaves me with two options. I need your input.

Here is the room before. Ignore the oversized but-never-gonna-be-able-to-afford-a-new couch and chair. I plan on buying a real entertainment stand sometime before the end of the year and putting the table behind the couch. Plus, Mitch is finally on board with drilling a hole in the wall behind the massive-life-sucking-black-hole of a television (and, ironically, we don’t watch “television” in our home except DVDs or VHS).

I’m pretty much sold on painting the walls the same color as the fireplace wall. I watched a movie recently and all of the walls in the house were painted in rich, dark colors and I just loved it. So, don’t try to convince me to paint a pale blue or green. Well, okay, if you feel STRONGLY about trying to convince me, I’ll listen to your arguments with an open mind, but ladies, I WANT COLOR. Look at this room. Neutral. Need I say more?

So, I figure these are my options.

Chair Rail Kinda Sorta - I would use a piece of MDF without the fancy “trim work” grooves. Sort of simple and classic. It would probably be 3-5 inches wide and it would be in line with our fireplace mantle and circle the room. SO, yes, it would cut through the TV and mirror and pictures. I would probably have to get creative about rehanging the pictures, but I’m not too concerned.

The Crown Molding Kinda Sorta – I would use the same non-fancy MDF (just picture a flat, smooth 2×4, except more like 2×5, hopefully) and line it up with the top of the plant shelf thingy.

What do you think? Which one should I do??

PS – I realize I have “perspective” issues on these photos! Makes me giggle!

I had to buy the basics this morning. You know. BACON.
I miss free bacon! Remember when I got free bacon? Bacon is NOT CHEAP, people! Oh, and I had to buy syrup. Does this stuff EVER go on sale? WHY is it so expensive? Good grief. If syrup ever goes on sale, I’m stocking up, because $3.39 for the store brand is ridiculous.

We are going camping tomorrow!! I’m SO excited!! I love camping. This time, we are camping at the beach. Hopefully it won’t rain all over us!!

I’m posting about this shopping trip just to show you some highlights. I’m not terribly impressed with the bottom line, though. UGH.

So, I bought the bacon (2 for $4.99 – it’s on BOGO sale), and the syrup. That ALONE cost me $8.38. Grr.

The highlights:

Lays Kettle chips are on sale with an in-ad coupon for $1.79 each. There are tearpads right next to the chips for $1/2 (double-able). Plus, I had a Buy 2 Lays, get Rold Gold pretzels free coupon. That means the 2 bags of chips and bag of pretzels cost me $2.08. Snacks for camping are a must.

The Coffeemate creamer is on sale with an in-ad coupon for $1.99 each. I printed off (2) 75¢/1 coupons (linked up at KCL) which were doubled to make the creamer only 74¢ each. We desperately needed creamer for our camping trip. Camping coffee is always questionable.

The Best Foods Mayonnaise is on sale with an in-ad coupon for $1.99 each. I had 2 ecoupons loaded onto my card, plus 2 MCs from the MDA coupon book (which was out in stores last month). Add the doubler in there and my mayo cost me 49¢ each. Oh, thank goodness. I’m not freaking out about stocking up on mayo so much anymore!

The French’s mustard was free a couple of months ago, but I missed the sale. I actually thought my boys preferred the brown mustard, so I didn’t worry about stocking up. However, now I know that they love the yellow mustard, too, and prefer to eat it on their hot dogs. I actually PAID for mustard a couple of months ago. Live and learn, I suppose!! This time, I took advantage of the sale! French’s Mustard is on sale for $1.50. I printed off a coupon 50¢/1 MC from frenchs.com, which doubled, plus I had a 50¢ off coupon from the Get Out and Grill coupon book. FREE mustard!

Kraft cheese is on sale for $1.69 with an in-ad coupon. I bought 2 bags of cheese at a time (I did this in 2 transactions) and used a $1/2 printable, which could be doubled. I ended up paying 94¢ a bag. (If you live near an Albertson’s there are MUCH better deals going on over there on Kraft stuff, but I don’t have the energy to drive for 30 minutes to shop with two little boys. When school starts, though, I might just have to try Albertson’s again! I’m a sucker for free cheese!)

Hot dog buns are 50¢ each with in-ad coupon.

Watermelon is $2.99 with in-ad coupon.

Remember how I earned a $3/$10 produce Catalina last week? I took advantage of that, and all of my produce (overpriced apples, bananas, onions, potatoes and watermelon) cost me $6.94.

I bought canning supplies and clearance ground beef this week, so I was worried that we wouldn’t have enough to cover groceries for camping. Thankfully my grand total for this trip was $24.52. Not shockingly good, but decent!

What do the Ratzlaff’s eat on a camping trip? Here’s my menu:

Thursday -Dinner:

Hot Dogs in buns

Watermelon

Chips

Smore’s

Friday -
Breakfast:

Scrambled Eggs

Bacon

Canned Peaches

Coffee/Cider

Lunch:

Tuna Sandwiches (with curry and apple) in homemade whole wheat pita bread (Requested by my son. I really need to post about the homemade pita bread, huh?)

Clam Chowder

Fruit

Dinner:

Marinated chicken thighs cooked over the fire (we tried this last time and it was delish!)

Zucchini grilled over the fire

probably chips and fruit

Smore’s and hot chocolate

Saturday -
Breakfast:

Pancakes

Scrambled Eggs

Coffee/Cider

Lunch:

Peanut Butter and Peach Jam Sandwiches

Bananas

Chips

We try to keep it pretty simple, but I do LOVE cooking on camping trips!! For me, camping is about moving from meal to meal with a little bit of hiking/fishing/beach combing/reading/board games/bike rides/etc. thrown in for good measure. Oh, and it MUST include bacon. Just sayin’.

We attended a little friend’s birthday party.

(layout is linked to credits!)

We went to many track practices and delighted in the speed of our precious boys. Grant tells me that he hums “Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus” in his head while he runs and it helps him win his races!

We watched the weirdest storyteller at the park as part of the library summer events thing. I totally didn’t get it.

We celebrated Grant’s 7th birthday with a snake themed birthday party: complete with snake cake and snake pinata. (layout coming soon!)

The boys attended VBS at a neighbor church and LOVED it. I felt a little funny farming them out, but I am so thankful that I did. They came home with lots of stories and questions about Egypt and they still talk about that week.

In the afternoons, they came home from VBS to eat lunch, then zipped down to the 5-day-club that was going on in our neighborhood. It’s like a neighborhood VBS put on by Child Evangelism Fellowship. I’m pretty sure that this is where Cole really started to understand what it meant to ask Jesus into his heart. A transforming week!!

I missed a haircut appointment. Twice. I’m terrible. The second time it happened, I almost started crying. Do you guys ever get that way? So frumpy that it starts effecting your mood? Plus, a little guilty?

The boys ran in their first track meet. IT WAS AWESOME! I’m sorry if this sounds completely prideful, but MY boys are the fastest, smartest, cutest, sweetest, most wonderful children around. Did I mention that they are FAST? Yes. They are. Grant won 1st place in the 200 by a HUGE margin. Oh, you should have seen him coming around the corner and just lighting up the track. It still makes my heart race!! AND THEN, he ran the mile against 12 and 13 year olds and came in first place in his age group. Okay, so he was the only 7 year old who was brave enough to run it, but STILL! He came in at right around 9 minutes (unofficially) and never walked. I can’t even TELL you how incredible I felt as I watched him. Oh, that child! He’s amazing! Can’t leave Cole out! He was a bit distracted during the track meet (lol!) but he did earn 4 ribbons! What a doll! He is an amazing long jumper!

I took the boys in for their well-child check-ups. I still do this even though the doctor says I don’t have to. I will probably still do this until my kids are in high school, and by then they will be required to have sports physicals anyway . . . which our doctor does for the high school . . . so whatever! It’s covered by insurance, so I do it. Anyway, Cole had to have a bunch of shots. Poor guy. However, he was brave and is recorded in the 95th percentile for height! Good grief! Okay, so I’m not THAT surprised. Mitch is 6’4″ and the men in my family average about 6′ or more. I can’t remember what %age Grant is (since they don’t really keep track of those things after a while), but he’s a tall guy, too! It was nice to get the doctor visit over with. I still need to call the specialist to get Cole’s hearing tested. He doesn’t talk the most clearly, and I wonder if his hearing is okay. The Dr. says to check it out just to put my mind at ease! (Note to self.)

Grant was a camper at Wildcat Hoop Camp for a week. He rediscovered a love for basketball! He was reluctant to go, but he didn’t want to disappoint his dad (who is a basketball player . . . although Mitch wouldn’t have been disappointed!), so he decided at the last minute to go. He is very glad that he did, and so are we! He learned some great skills and his confidence grew. He is excited to keep practicing!

The Reptile Man visited Dallas. This is always SUCH a huge hit! We’ve been going to see the Reptile Man every summer (except last, when he didn’t come) since Grant was 2. Mitch even takes time out of his lunch hour to come with us. This year, both of the boys were called up to hold snakes!! It was THE coolest thing! Grant held a white snake (which I’m sure he could tell you the name of, but I am clueless) and Cole held the ginormous boa constrictor. What I loved most: The Reptile Man would give us clues about the next animal he was going to pull out of the box and Grant would turn to us and name the animal. He was right every time! {heart singing!} Ever since he was 2 (when he discovered a DEEP love of sharks) he has been visiting the animal science section of the library to check out his books. It actually wasn’t until this year that he became interested in story books, since Mitch has been reading the Narnia series to the boys. My child is ALL about science!

We took part is ALL kinds of Summerfest festivities including walking through the booths, getting free stuff, and attending the Rubber Duck fundraiser race (where two of Mitch’s ducks won prizes: a gift card to Goodwill and 10 games of bowling . . . guess which one he is giving to me!!). We went to a great concert at the Rotary stage downtown, cooled off with free snow cones (at our dentist’s booth – imagine the blue teeth!) and watched the hydro cart races at the fire station. Just before the big parade, the boys ran in the kids fun run. Cole insisted on holding daddy’s hand the whole way (poor Mitch!), while I ran along the end of the race route in my Crocs trying to capture a picture of Grant. The race wasn’t “officially” timed and there were only participation ribbons, but MY OLDEST SON came in first place in his age group and whipped a bunch of older kids. I’m so stinkin’ proud of him!

(layout is linked to credits)

The next day (which was actually August 1st, but since it is part of Summerfest weekend I’ll talk about it here) was the BIG Breakfast In The Park and Tom Newton Car Show, both put on by Dallas Rotary. Did I mention that my amazing husband is this year’s Rotary Club President? Yes. He is. Amazing!! He was also one of the main guys in charge of planning the car show (which is a total understatement, actually) so we hung out at the car show most of the day. Mitch was SUPER busy, so I occupied the boys, but they did great. I was so proud of my husband and his professionalism and attention to detail. Plus, he looked hot (literally and figuratively!) standing next to the trophy winners and their cars as they took pictures during the awards ceremony.

And THAT was July. It was an incredible month!

I have been waiting for a good hair color deal for a LONG time. Too long. My grays are really showing these days.

I’m kind of new to coloring my hair. The first time I did it was the week I turned 30 (I’m now 34). I try to be pretty low-maintenance, so I didn’t want to get into a habit of going to a salon and shelling out lots of money on a regular basis just to get rid of my grays. Don’t get me wrong. I have no problem if YOU do it!! In fact, I might envy your cute highlights. I just have a hard time forking over the cash. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about it. LOL!

I read an article in a magazine a few years ago about what the best brands of hair color are for different types of hair. It recommended Garnier Nutrisse for my hair, so I went out and bought a box and have never looked back! I typically get the kind with Avocado Oil and go with the darkest color with a white gal on the box. Actually, one time I went with a box with a black gal on it, and my hair turned out cute with that color, too! Every once in a while, I go with a little lighter color, but most of the time I stick with Dark Natural Brown. My hair stylist is a hair color diva (that’s her email address, actually!), and she says that it’s working great for me, so to just keep doing what I’m doing. Whew!

Okay, so like I said, I NEEDED hair color. I usually buy it at Safeway when they are having a BOGO deal, but I haven’t seen one lately. THEN, on Saturday night I started seeing Rite Aid match-ups on my coupon blogs that listed Garnier hair color!! Wheee!

I ended up with this:

The Garnier hair color is on sale for $5.99 at Rite Aid this week! AND, there are coupons for this variety – the HerbaShine!! PLUS there is a $5 +UP reward when you spend $15 on Garnier.

I only have 1 computer, and you can print 2 copies of the same type of coupon from a single computer. To get the second coupon, you just wait until the first one has printed and then use your browser’s back button to print again, or just go back to the site and check the little box and click “print” again. There will be different numbers on each coupon to ensure that they are legit. (NEVER make a photocopy of a coupon. That is fraudulent!!)

Buy 4 Garnier HerbaShine Hair Colors $5.99
Use (2) $2.00/1 – Garnier HerbaShine (redplum.com)
Use (1) $2.00 off any Garnier Hair Color – (Rite Aid Video Values)

Buy 2 Pepsi 20 oz. bottles from cold case ($1.69 + .05 deposit in Oregon)
Use Buy 1 Get 1 Free Manufacturer’s Coupon (facebook)
Use Buy 1 Get 1 Free (Rite Aid Video Values)
(linked up at Hip 2 Save)

Your subtotal will be $27.44
-$5/$20 Rite Aid Coupon (Video Values) or $5/25 (redplum.com)
-$4 (redplum coupons)
-$6 (coupons.com coupons)
-$2 (Garnier video values coupon)
-$1.69 for MC for BOGO Pepsi
-$1.69 video value for BOGO Pepsi

Pay $7.06 OOP, PLUS earn a $5 +UP reward to be used on your next purchase! And, if you have 2 computers in your house, you could actually print the $3/1 coupon from coupons.com 4 times (and don’t use the $2/1) for even bigger savings!!

All that hair color for only $6.96! That’s $1.74 per coloring!! (I could probably do it for less if I went to a beauty store and bought the ingredients and blah, blah, blah. I know. However, I like having directions to follow. LOL!)

The Krazy Coupon Lady has a fun saying: Make the grocery isle your catwalk. I totally felt like that tonight as I took advantage of one of the Safeway weekend only deals.

I DO NOT need salad dressing. I have so much of it that I’m starting to feel like a hoarder. However, when it makes me money, I’ll (kinda reluctantly) buy it. (And, I have plans to donate some, because OH MY GOSH. It’s sick.)

(Sorry about the blurry pic! My son made popcorn while I went shopping and daddy mowed the lawn. Talk about a mess on the counter!! However, I’m proud of his independence.)

Kraft Salad Dressing is on sale for $1.29 this weekend. Good price for regular folks, but obviously ridiculous for extreme couponers. Can I get an amen? Couponers don’t PAY for salad dressing! The very thought makes us laugh!!

Anywho! Like I said, Kraft was on sale for $1.29. I used:
$1/1 Safeway Store Coupon from the Get Out and Grill coupon book
$1/1 Manufacturer’s Coupon from the Make it a Sandwich coupon book (DND) (and I can’t find a link to the picture for you!)
(Both coupon books are still available on the seafood counter at my local Safeway. The coupons in the Sandwich book expire 8/31, and the ones in the Grill book expire 9/7.)

It’s the classic Double-Dip scenario. You CAN use a store coupon with a manufacturer’s coupon. Even without the doubler, I still made 71¢ per bottle.

What else?

Carrots are $1.09. I used the $1 off any produce item store coupon from the Sandwich book (min $5 store purchase – this is before coupons but after club card savings). So, carrots for 9¢. Cole will be quite happy. The child HAS to have his carrots or he gets grumpy.

The Del Monte smoothie thingies were another moneymaker for me. The Krazy Coupon Lady told us about the free smoothies today, and since Oregon Safeways double MCs (up to 50¢ and 4 per transaction), I made 50¢. (I only had her double one. You’ll see why in a sec.)

I am paranoid that I am going to run out of mayonnaise before next spring, and there haven’t been any good mayo sales. Mayonnaise is expensive, people! And, my kids are meat and cheese sandwich eaters rather than PB&J eaters. My 4 small containers of peanut butter will last me until next summer. Mayonnaise is another story.

SO, since the coupons from the Sandwich book are expiring on 8/31, I felt like I should use the $1/1 Kraft Mayo MC (DND) now. Plus, the Grill book has a $1/1 Store coupon. Double dippin’ again!

The big things of Kraft mayo are $2.99 (good grief!). The squirt Olive Oil kind are $2.49. The Sandwich Shop kind are $1.99. Since the MC is Do Not Double, you would only take $2 off. Do the math here. The Sandwich Shop is free (and the hot and spicy is good!). However, I needed regular stuff. However, with ranch dressing in my cart and staring at the mayonnaise, I was starting to feel fat, so I went with the light version. Please tell me this light kind doesn’t taste all sour like the light version from the 90s!! I’m taking a risk here.

With the overage from the cursed dressing, the whole transaction went like this:

2 Kraft Mayo – $5.98
2 Kraft Dressing – $2.58
2 Del Monte Smoothie thingies – $2
1 bag of carrots – $1.09
- (2) $1/1 MC for dressing (Sandwich book)
- (2) $1/1 MC for Mayo (Sandwich book)
- (2) $1/1 Store coupon for dressing (Grill book)
- (2) $1/1 Store coupon for Mayo
- $1/1 Store coupon for produce
– (2) $1/1 Del Monte Smoothies MC (printable linked up at KCL)
- 50¢ – Safeway doubler
= 15¢ FIFTEEN CENTS, people! If I had tossed in a couple of oranges to absorb the overage, I could have had her double both Del Monte MCs. However, I figured it would be awkward to have her PAY me 35¢ (and against store policy), so I had her take the second doubler off. Hee, hee!

Yes. All of that for fifteen cents out of pocket. Now do you see why The Grocery Isle is My Catwalk?

That may be one of the longest titles I’ve ever written, and it certainly isn’t following SEO guidelines, but I don’t care. I seriously paid 50¢ for 6 bottles of Motts apple juice and 5 boxes of Quaker granola bars.
Angela from Frugal Living NW is out of town this week, so she asked her readers to scope out the Safeway ad to find the great match-ups. I didn’t have my ad, so I couldn’t contribute much, but the other readers found some great deals! I love the Frugal Living NW ...
A sincere thank you to my current sponsors!

I love the Frugal Living NW readers. Seriously. No matter which coupon blog you read, be sure that you check out the comments on the posts. Often, the blog readers will find great deals, too, or warn you away from bad ones.

I also depended on The Krazy Coupon Lady, although I’ve noticed that the prices are varying from region to region, which is a total pain. However, most of the time the readers will mention their local price in the comments, and often the deals are similar. If you want to learn how to coupon, read their 10 Days to Become a KCL series! I can’t say enough about it.

ANYWAY, this is what I purchased at Safeway today:

I paid $22.93, and $14.06 of that was for the chicken.

That means that I paid $8.87 for all the rest!!

We needed meat. At 99¢ a pound for chicken thighs, drumsticks and quarters, it’s not a great sale, but it’s meat and we needed it.

The eggs are on sale for $1.49 with the in-ad coupon, and the spinach is 99¢. Bananas, milk, blah, blah, blah.

The deals:

2 boxes of GoGurt (2/$4) cost me 25¢. I had 3 ecoupons that came off, and a $1/2 MC that doubled (I got the MC from the inside of the lunch box.)

I did the VandeCamps/Birdseye deal, and I ended up paying -42¢. Oh my word? WHAT? Let me look at that again . . .
Steamfresh Veggies: $2.29
Fish Sticks: $6.79
=$9.08
-$2 ecoupon
-$2 ecoupon (it was loaded twice)
-$2 MDA Manufacturer’s coupon
-$3 Buy Fish Sticks, get Veggies Free coupon (she just scanned it instead of putting the price in . . . just noticed that)
-.50 doubler
= -.42 Wow! I just impressed myself. I wasn’t expecting that! This is a total YMMV situation because the cashier probably should have read my coupon and just adjusted it down to $2.29. And, I figured that I didn’t need the in-ad coupon since I was going to get the veggies for free anyway, so I didn’t even look at it. Might have made it a sweeter deal . . . but, I’ll take it! (The $3 coupon was mentioned in the comments under the KCL Safeway match-ups and can be found at smartsource!)

I bought the snack sized Oreos! After my little rant about 100 Calorie Packs, I thought it appropriate. By the way, 9 little cookies is 130 calories. And they are CRUNCHY, and they have gooey good stuff in them. Oh, yeah!! Plus, they cost me 36¢ a bag. I used the in-ad coupon to get them for 99¢ each, then I used a 75¢/2 MC that could be doubled.

I did the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Milk + cereal deal! I’ve never had this before, but it sounds yummy, plus it could be wonderful in smoothies. Plus, I had a coupon for a free box of Cheerios. I won the giveaway that they mention on the front of the box! So, the Almond Breeze was $2.99 (even though the vanilla was marked higher on the shelf), plus I used a 55¢/1 MC (which doubled), and the Cheerios were free. Then, because I bought the milk and the cereal in the same transaction (for a whopping $1.94), a $3 Catalina printed! SCORE! (I also earned a $3/$10 produce coupon!!)

I used the $3 Catalina to pay for my transaction #2 – The Motts + Quaker deal:

6 Motts @$2
5 Quaker ($2.49 each, but you get 2 free when you buy 3 drinks)
Used (3) $2/2 Motts MCs
Used the $3/5 Quaker coupon from the Albertson’s ad (YMMV here!)
Used the doubler to -$2.
The subtotal came to $3.49, then I used my $3 Cat.
I had them round it up to 50¢ for MDA, so I spent 50¢ out of pocket! I’m generous like that. LOL! (Okay, I really do round up quite often, so no mean comments!)

And, of course, I had the butcher “deal” with the meat for me (read the comments on this post for more info). They took the family packs and divided them in half and added marinades to each bag. I added some spice to the leg quarters. I popped them in the freezer for quick crock pot meals or to thaw in the refrigerator for an even deeper marinade before grilling. We’ve been loving this lately!

Did I miss anything? I might go back for cheap ice cream later this week, but what else am I missing?

Just so ya know, my friend has been generous with the veggies, so we’re all balanced like that. I know that my trips look a little funny, but I had to change my mindset when I started couponing, and now I can have it all (fruit/veggies/milk/eggs/meat/junk) and stick to a $200/month budget, too!
