We meet in a middle school gymnasium on Sunday mornings. So, when I saw this article, it caught me a little off-guard.

Starting February 12th, NYC will no longer allowing religious organizations to rent space in public schools (unless NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg reverses the decision). The basic reasoning is that the city is worried that if it allows churches to use the spaces, it opens the door for schools to be identified by a certain belief or religious system. Here are just a couple of my thoughts:

1. Churches pay a lot of money to rent the spaces. It’s not as if the school is giving them some kind of handout and therefore “supporting” what they are doing.

2. The churches meet at times that the school is not being used.

3. With the money that the schools make from the rent income, they could fund special programs or activities that they would not normally have the funds to provide.

4. If there is an issue with a particular denomination or congregation, that should be handled on a case by case basis. A blanket ban of all religious organizations is not helping anyone.
