Dear friends,

New Country Prayer Update
Just wanted to send out a short note to ask for prayer.

I have been trying to get more information about the programming to be broadcast in a new country.

I am happy to report that the programming arrived on the hard disk that we delivered. After asking and waiting we finally discovered that they will be beginning broadcasting in September.

They have not given us any details about when exactly that is but I am hoping to find out more soon. We have been praying for this country for a very long time and the spiritual battle there is large.

PRAYER MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Please join with us in praying that:
* the programming will actually be broadcast starting next month
* the Gospel message will be widely seen, understood and responded to
* that we get access to more quality programming for the region

Thinking about growth

According to some research only 15% of American churches are growing - and of those only 2.3% are growing through people coming to faith for the first time. The rest is "growth" by swapping churches.

1,500 churches will be founded in the USA in a year but another 4,000 will close.

This is a good reminder that statistics can be deceptive if we choose to conveniently leave out some of the data.

Perhaps more importantly it might indicate that our measure of "growth" is likely more defined from by our than it is by God.

Today's western culture measures growth in ways I am strongly persuaded that God never intended. We are more likely to see growth as based upon our culture
* looking for profits that increase each quarter
* how many "likes" we get on Facebook or followers on Twitter or G+

A good question might be, however we define growth, is it the way God describes it in Scripture?

Focus on the true Center

Thinking about how quick to making judgment I can be.

Thinking about how many people I hear talking about God sending "judgments" in the form of earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornados, nuke disasters ...

Then I look at Jesus.

He did not send storms, He calmed them.

He did not send pestilence, He healed the sick.

He did not judge others who truly did Him wrong but said "Father forgive."

He was innocent and He paid the debts of us all who are not.

I need to look more at Jesus.

The Currency of the Current

Many good things have happened to you.

Really, it is true. A tremendous number of positive events have occurred benefiting you directly.

These events happened to you as a child, they continued into adolescence and did not stop as you became an adult.

There is something in us that seems to tend away from retention. Over time we forget, and the tendency to forget good things is especially strong.

Our brains seem wired to look at the current, to look at the immediate and base what we think and feel on whatever is newest.

Our attention spans are getting increasingly shorter. Congratulations if you have read this far!

Anything over 140 characters seems to many more and more like reading a novel.

We have far to many “time saving” acronyms, IMHO (LOL!)

Our tendency is to ask, like the Janet Jackson song, “what have you done for me lately.” (Someone reading this is internally complaining that I am not using a newer song as an example.)

Let’s face it folks. We have a problem. We live in a world where our currency is the current

We are now-aholics.

The first step is to admit that we have a problem.

Go ahead. Do it.

Now.

We Forget that We Forget

People forget. Important things get forgotten. It happens all the time.

Our tendency seems to be deeply pressed into us. This has been recognized for centuries. This is itself nothing new.

Fear of being forgotten is a great driving force in history. Just look at what has been done to make “great” names.

Great buildings have been constructed to “insure” that the people whose moniker they carried would not slip into the abyss of lost memory. Washington has a monument, Eiffel has a tower. Trump has a tower and he’s not even dead yet.

Place names try to preserve the memory of those who founded them or are merely named after someone thought to be of importance.

St. Petersburg is named for a Tsar, Sao Paul for an apostle and Columbus for a discoverer. Pennsylvania and Maryland were named for real people.

Then there are things like streets, parks, bridges and tunnels, airports, stadiums, schools and universities, planets and diseases, ministries and businesses - you get the idea..

Lest you think you are any different, ask yourself why people prefer to mark graves with engraved stones and not with full color billboards.

Each time something significant happens we tend to think to ourselves. I will never forget this.

At the moment of the birth of an idea the “nowness” of the event can be so strong that is hard to imagine that we could forget it just days, hours or, more often than we care to admit just minutes later.

Now you are likely thinking about just how often this has happened to you (and wishing you had made a record of it somewhere...)

We are in fact so good at forgetting that we even forget that we forget!

AFGHANISTAN
According to the latest International Religious Freedom Report from the U.S. State Department, there is no public Christian Church left in Afghanistan. The last one was razed in March 2010.

This reflects the state of religious freedom in this country ten years after the United States first invaded it and overthrew the Islamist Taliban regime. US taxpayers have spent $440 billion to support Afghanistan's new government and more than 1,700 military personnel have died serving there.

The new Afghan Constitution states that Islam is "the religion of the state" and that "no law can be contrary to the beliefs and provisions of the sacred religion of Islam" but it also says that "followers of other religions are free to exercise their faith and perform their religious rites within the limits of the provision of the law".

The report also says that the right to change one's religion is not respected either in law or practice. Conversion from Islam is considered apostasy and is punishable by death under some interpretations of Islamic law. More than 99% of the Afghan population is either Sunni (80%) or Shia (19%) Muslim.

Evangelist Shot Dead in Pakistan

Christian who wanted to serve the poor had received threats from area Muslims.
KARACHI, Pakistan, November 18 (CDN) — An evangelist was shot dead here on Wednesday (Nov. 16) by an unidentified gunman in what his family believes was a radical Muslim group’s targeting of a Christian.

Zahid Jameel, 25, told Compass that his father, Jameel Saawan, and a helper were opening the doors of their cosmetics shop in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Pakistan’s commercial hub of Karachi on Wednesday morning when a young man appeared and shot his father, first in the neck and then in the face.... Reading this story reminded me of the seriousness of sharing the message of the Gospel. Our partners there are as far as we know still safe - but the spiritual battle in this country is raging.

WIJD

I have been thinking lately about how upside down I often live.

Why should I be concerned about WWJD (what would Jesus do) more than I am concerned about WIJD (what is Jesus doing?)

Living under the Law makes me check lists and to compare myself with something that I fall far short of. Living under Grace means trusting that God _is_ working in my life and walking in this trust.

Like the thought I had the other day. I need to be careful to check from which tree I am eating fruit.

If it is of the knowledge of good and evil I will try harder and fail.

If it is from the tree of Life I will live.

Seems like a no brainer to me!

Last week I was with my children in a restaurant. My six year old son asked if he could say the blessing.

“Sure you can,” I replied.

We held hands and he started to pray.

“God is good, God is awesome. Thanks for the food, I would be even more thankful if Mommy would order some ice cream for us as dessert. Freedom and justice for all! Amen.”

The people around who could hear the prayer started to laugh.

One lady said, “These youth! Children today do not know how to pray and today’s parents are not able to teach them. It is inappropriate to beg God for some ice cream.”

When my son heard this he started crying.

“Is God now mad with me?”

I calmed him down and assured him that God would understand his prayer properly and would not be angry with him.

Meanwhile, a man from the next table came and laid his hand on my son’s little head. He smiled at the boy.

“I am sure that God loved your prayer.”

“Really?” my son asked.

“I swear it” said the man as he continued speaking with a theatrical whisper so that the other lady would hear him.

“It is very sad that that lady never asked God for some ice cream, because ice cream is good for our soul.”

You can be sure that I then ordered ice cream for my children for dessert.

My son looked at his ice cream cone and did something I shall never forget.

Without a single word, he carefully lifted his ice cream and went to the lady at the next table. He put the bowl of ice cream in front of the lady, smiled at her, looked her in the eyes.

“Here” he said, “this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul and my soul is already good.”

Relationships Change Us

We need to carefully think about relationships. When we align ourselves with others we change.

This change can be good or bad. It is seldom neutral.

As Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

We effect each other. What we do and say makes a difference. What others say and do effects us. We need to look for and nurture relationships that "sharpen" us and not those that just make us dull.

I listened to a sermon the other day about John the Baptizer and the question he had about the identity of Jesus.

In reflecting on this story (which you can find in Luke 7:20-23) it occurred to me that even the "great" are prone to doubt.

Often people in "professional" ministry feel like they are sacrificing and working hard for God - and then they experience difficulties in the wilderness where often all feels as if it was for nothing.

I jotted down this as I tried to imagine John and his thinking in jail.

Alone in the wilderness
I have followed Your call
roughly attired and living off the land
I have spoken the words
the words you spoke to me
the Kingdom of God is at hand

Repent and be baptized
turn to your God
turn back to your God

These words. spoken in truth
have landed me in prison
I can no longer speak to the crowds
I can no longer announce Your arrival
tell me

Are You the One?

Fortunately, the story does not end with the doubts of John.

Jesus' response shows that He is indeed "the One." And He is not relying on words - He is showing it by his actions.

Jesus - is the Word and takes action. He shows and tells. He is the One to quell or fears and doubts - then as now.

Injected into the World

He who spoke and world's came into being humbled Himself and became a baby.

Reliant on a teenage refugee mother whom most were convinced was with child out of wedlock, He was born and placed into a feeding trough.

God injects Himself into humanity - the Word becomes flesh.

He was not content to let us stay in our sins and so the God of all became sin for us.

And it all started inauspiciously away from the centers of power and peoples of importance.

THIS is the gift of Christmas.
