The Impulse series is a new range of professional USB/MIDI controllers from Novation. Consisting of three keyboards: the Impulse 25, Impulse 49 and Impulse 61, they each have a precision keyboard and a full control surface powered by a brand new version of Novation's Automap control software. Automap 4 makes getting hands-on with your DAW/plug-ins fast and simple. Impulse also has 8 back-lit drum pads which can warp arpeggios, roll beats and launch Live clips.

Impulse has a precision 'players' keyboard. It is semi-weighted with assignable aftertouch and has been designed to feel like an instrument rather than a computer peripheral. In addition to feeling good, it is incredibly accurate - this means it can translate musical expression (how you play the keyboard) extremely effectively. So your performance is reflected exactly by the synth or software instrument you are triggering.
The Impulse controllers feature full DAW/plug-in control surface with 8 knobs, 9 faders and buttons and a custom LCD screen (1 fader & button on Impulse25).

Impulse has 8 quality-feel drum pads which are velocity-sensitive with aftertouch. These are back-lit with 3-colour LEDs which means they can do things other drum pads can't, like warping arpeggios in real time, rolling beats and launching clips in Ableton Live (Ableton Live Lite 8 comes with Impulse).

Tascam DP-24 PortaStudio

The DP-24 is Tascam's new entry to their popular PortaStudio. It is a 24-track Digital Portastudio with solid-state recording, a color LCD and channel strip controls to make recording simple so you stay creative.

Up to eight tracks can be recorded at a time through its combination XLR and ¼” combo jacks. Input processing like compression and limiting are available during recording, as well as guitar amp simulation and multi-effects for use with the instrument-level input.

Once recorded, tracks can be viewed and mixed on the large color LCD and dedicated mixing controls like nineteen linear faders and a dozen channel strip encoders. Two Mixdown effects including reverb and chorus are also available, as well as a mastering effect. Once finished, songs can be transferred to computer over USB or written to CD with the built-in CD-RW drive.

Tascam US-125M USB audio interface mixer

The Tascam US-125M is an inexpensive USB audio interface with the functionality of a mixer. Although it can only record in stereo, you can use it as a mixer to combine the inputs from a mic, instrument and line source with a computer audio signal. The US-125M feeds the mix to your computer via USB and it can also be used as a stand alone mixer sending your signal to the RCA outputs.

The US-125M provides up to 16 bit/48 KHz audio resolution and is ideal for broadcasting (live streaming) over the internet. It features four inputs with dedicated level controls: a Microphone input (balanced XLR/TRS on rear or unbalanced mini jack on front) with switchable limiter and Signal/Overload indicator, a Guitar input (standard phone jack), a Stereo line input (RCA) and a Stereo audio input from computer via USB.

Chromaphone - make your own instrument

Have you ever wanted to create your own instrument, but are a bit like me and not skilled to work with metal, wood, skins and other materials? (Not skilled is putting it mildly in my case.) Applied Acoustics has released Chromaphone, an atelier for musicians and producers! At the turn of a few knobs, become an instrument maker, shaping metal, carving wood, and stretching skins. Craft and play expressive and responsive instruments that have a real-life presence. Like the rest of their great sounding products, AAS has used their expertise in physical modelling to create a powerful (and fun!) synth.

Musicians and producers will love the creative control offered by Chromaphone. It is ideal for teachers and students as a learning and creative tool.

Chromaphone lets you create pairs of acoustic resonators from string, beam, marimba, plate, membrane as well as open and closed tube objects. There is also a manual mode that let you pick your own partials for super specific applications. The Material, Tone, and Decay controls—which together shape the actual tone of the resonators by working on the amplitude and decay of the partials—yield a rich palette of sonorities. With just a few parameter tweaks, go from wood to metal to glass and completely change the nature of the instrument you are crafting.

The Pitch control is used to adjust the reference pitch and relative size of the object. The Pitch's Key (keyboard) modulation can be tempered for an exact match of the keyboard note; fixed for a soundboard or one-shot construction; or stretched and contracted for interesting effects.
The Hit Pt (Hit Point) control determines where the impact signal from the Mallet and Noise modules strikes on the resonator. It has a great influence on the tone and also mimics live playing techniques and articulations.

Chromaphone follows a simple signal flow diagram where an excitation signal from a Mallet and Noise module is fed to a pair of resonators. The resulting signal is then sent to two multi-effect modules for extra sound shaping possibilities.

The heart of the synthesizer lies in the resonator pair which can be configured in parallel or in coupling mode to emulate different types of instruments.

In parallel mode, each resonator receives the mixed signal from the Mallet and Noise modules. The resulting sound is a simple mix of both resonators as if they were played at once.

In coupling mode, the resonators are laid out in series. It's the first resonator that receives the mixed signal of the Mallet and Noise modules. The connection between both resonators is bi-directional and deals with energy information rather than an audio signal. That's where the magic happens: depending on each resonator's characteristics and where they are physically connected (second resonator's Hit Pt parameter), they interact dynamically to form a totally new object!
