Our next rabbit show is right around the corner! On February 4th there is a Rainier and ERBA rabbit show in Enumclaw. This show is type only, so no need to worry about fit and show. All of the other information is included in the show catalog. A link to that is provided below. If you are planning on going, be sure to register as soon as possible. Hope to see you there!

WSU 4-H Scholarships - Deadline to Apply 3/15/17

WSU Extension offers several scholarships that can be simultaneously applied for with a single application packet. The packet can be found and downloaded at the WSU Extension Scholarship Opportunities webpage. Applicants must be seniors in high school or will/have earned their GED and have plans for post-high school education. Scholarships are paid directly to post high school educational institutions. Applicants have a cover form to complete that requires a signature from the county agent to certify eligibility. Get your scholarship packet going ASAP and allow yourself plenty of time to gather the required signatures and letters of recommendation to submit.

Due to closure of Bellevue School District due to icy conditions on 2/7/17, our regularly scheduled business meeting scheduled for tonight is cancelled. Kelsey Creek Critters' next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, February 21 at 7pm at Kelsey Creek Farm. We are meeting in our new location at the farm in the farmhouse near the end of the access road. Parking is available next to the farm house.

Kelsey Creek is new to the cavy project this year - this video is a great resource for the basics of cavy showmanship in preparation for the first show on January 7. The video was produced by senior cavy 4-Her from Lake County, IL.

Schedule For Upcoming Events

There are quite a few big things coming up in the next few months, so make sure to add them to your calendar!

First, there is an ARBA Rabbit and Cavy show coming up tomorrow (12/3/16) at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. This is only a type show, meaning that there will be no showmanship. Here is a link to the show catalog: https://www.arba.net/district/1/catalogs/WCF_LCRCC_Cat1216.pdf

The next important thing on the horizon is our Monthly Business Meeting at Kelsey Creek Farm on 12/6/16.

The following Sunday will be the Poultry/Woodworking Project Meeting at the Rice home (12/11/16).

We also have our very exciting Year End Party to celebrate the 2015-16 4-H year at the Bartlett home on 12/17/16 from 2-5 pm.

Next, we have our Monthly Project Meeting where we will be practicing Fit and Show on 12/20/16 at 7 pm.

Last, but certainly not least, there is a Snohomish County 4-H Rabbit and Cavy show at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe on January 7, 2017. Vet check starts at 7:30, the show begins at 9am. The show will take place in the Livestock Pavilion.

All of these events have been added to the website calendar as well . We hope that you can consider participating in as many of these events as possible and we look forward to seeing you at the December business meeting!

As we are coming upon the third Tuesday of November, it should be about time for our monthly Rabbit/Cavy project meeting. We would like to remind you that this month, on November 15th, we are switching out the project meeting for an officers' retreat. This will mean that the only people that need to show up are the current officers. We look forward to seeing the rest of you at our next meeting on December 6th!

2016-17 4-H Year Begins!

The 2016-17 4-H year for Kelsey Creek Critters begins tonight with our first business meeting of the year. We begin at 7pm at Kelsey Creek Farm in the education barn.

Online enrollment is now open for the new 4-H year. All enrollment takes place through the online portal. Returning members select the I Have a Profile option and new members will create a profile and then complete enrollment: 4-H Online Enrollment System

New this year - we have project leadership for poultry and woodworking projects. Looking to expand beyond rabbits? Consider adding poultry and/or woodworking. More information about these projects will be shared at tonight's meeting.

Summer Hiatus and 2016/17 4-H Year

Kelsey Creek Critters continues to be on summer hiatus until the conclusion of the Washington State 4-H Fair in September. The new 4-H year will begin on October 1, 2016. Kelsey Creek Critters will resume meetings on October 4, 2016 at 7pm at Kelsey Creek Farm in Bellevue. Upcoming King County 4-H Shows

Kelsey Creek Critters and Rainier Rabbits are going to team up to co-host the King County Spring Rabbit Show in April 9, 2016 at Enumclaw Expo in the rabbit barn. After the 2015 King County Fair, the clubs agreed that the coop tables that have been in use for decades and are plagued by dry rot, broken wire and stripped screw housings had reached the end of their useful lives and we'd need to work on a new coop table system before the 2016 fair. This show will be the main fundraiser by the project to underwrite the cost of the new tables. In addition to fit and show and type judging, we will also have educational display and judging/breed i.d. contests. This is an excellent opportunity to see how your educational display that you may enter in King County Fair may be improved before the fair entry deadline and to practice judging and breed identification. Show flyer will be published later this week. This is one of two King County Fair qualifying shows offered in 2016!

The table skirting and plastic sheeting do a good job of hiding the poor condition of

our old coop tables.

The tables haven't been stored carefully in several years and have

suffered from exposure to the elements.

Additionally, our solid top tables that we use for type judging and

other contests are very worn and in need of replacement.

Washington State Fair 2015

Washington State Fair 2015 is officially in the past as we close the 2014-15 4-H year. Nine members had a great experience and represented King County with class, sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Seven members received call back ribbons in showmanship to semi-final tables and Nancy V. made it all the way to the championship table for juniors. Paul S. earned an Award of Merit for his public presentation and Linda V. earned an Award of Merit for her blue dress with the daisies for Fashion Revue. The King County senior judging team won 3rd place in state - 5 of the 8 members of the judging team were Kelsey Creek Critters!

Our 2015-16 4-H year begins on Tuesday, October 6 at Kelsey Creek Farm with our first business meeting of the year. We'll also be participating at Farm Fair at Kelsey Creek Farm on October 10, 2015.

Kelsey Creek Critters Testify About King County Fair and 4-H

Fiona H. and Viole M. spoke to the King County Council Committee of the Whole on September 2, 2015. The council invited 4-H and Enumclaw Expo to testify about King County Fair and 4-H. Fiona and Viole, along with several other youth from other King County 4-H clubs, provided information and testimony to the council about what the fair and the 4-H program means to and has done for them. Part of the 4-H curriculum is to do a public presentation each year - this is an example of how public presentations apply to real world situations. Well done, Fiona and Viole!

Summer Hiatus and Washington State 4-H Fair

Kelsey Creek Critters is on summer hiatus until the new 4-H year begins in October 2015. We look

forward to coming back to an educational barn that will have a brand new roof and jumping back into service with Farm Fair on October 10, 2015 at Kelsey Creek Farm. Our regular meeting schedule will resume on October 6, 2015 at 7pm.

As of this date, nine Critters have qualified for and registered to participate in the Washington State 4-H Fair in Puyallup September 18-20. If you qualified for state fair, didn't register at county fair but would like to participate, you need to let Nancy Baskett by August 28 which is the deadline for all county fair entries. Another King County Fair has come to an end. Lots of new memories for new members and great moments. Thank you to our fabulous barn superintendent, Callie Weber and Reni Lucido, for organizing another excellent fair experience for the rabbit project. Thanks also to families who supported their exhibitors, especially to those who pitched in to help one another transport rabbits home last night. Several Critters have qualified and plan to attend state fair in September in Puyallup. Enjoy some of the highlights of King County Fair 2015 below:

Congratulations to Brendan P. for winning Best Rabbit In Show with his broken mini rex doe at King County Fair! Brendan is the first Critter to win Best in Show in the last 10+ years of King County Fair. Congratulations to Paul S. for an honorable mention in rabbit type judging! Brendan capped his day with a champion ribbon in Breeder's Choice, a competition open to 4-Hers who enter rabbits that they've bred and raised from infancy themselves!

The King County Fair is coming up in a little over a week and Kelsey Creek Critters has 19 members entered in fair. We're very excited to see the fair back under local management and the upgrades and maintenance to the fairgrounds that were visible at a rabbit show on May 30. Rainier Rabbits Double ARBA Youth and 4-H Show May 30

Rainier Rabbits 4-H and ARBA Club in Enumclaw is having the next King County show that will be a qualifier for King County Fair. A link to the show flyer and entry form is attached to this post. The judges will be George Germaine and Cindy Wickizer - Cindy will be the judge at King County Fair in July. This is an excellent opportunity to see what Cindy is like before fair. It is also an excellent opportunity to get your animals evaluated more than once for type.

The flyer indicates there is limited space for entries so get your entries in early! The show will be held at the Enumclaw Expo where King County Fair takes place in July. Entries made by mail will be on time if received by May 21 and email entries will be on time if received by May 23.
