She was 5 weeks old but only weighed 35 grams. I tried so hard to save her, using one protocol after another. Then just as things began to improve and she began to gain weight she passed away. Sometimes the passing of a baby animal that I have worked so hard to save hits me hard. This is one of those times. The little squirrel in this picture was taken a day before she passed away. Thanks so much to Cherry.H.E.A.R.T Rescue for the graphic. http://cherryrescue.weebly.com/

Mary Kemp / Baby Wildlife Rehabilitation: Though they weigh less then 1/2 oz. they are still alive on the 3rd day of care.

Everyone of the newborn Squirrels in the previous photo are now Wild & Released! This is called fledging. Some bird species such as robins and blue jays remain on the ground for weeks. These birds look clumsy and injured. Unless you see a visible injury, please leave the fledglings to learn on their own. Mothers are often close by. Cats and dogs are the fledgling's worry. Please keep your cat or dog indoors during this time. If you see a fledgling on the street, gently place it under a bush in a cat or dog free area. Birds that have fallen out of the nest can be placed back in. These birds will have little or no feathers. If the nest is destroyed, then make a nest from a Tupperware type bowl with paper towel inside and vent holes. Please the “nest” back in the tree.

OPOSSUMS that are not injured and are over 7-8 inches long (not including tail) should be left alone. If they are less than 7-8 inches, please do not try to feed them as they do not have the ‘suckle” response and need to be tube fed VERY select formula. Opossums are prone to Metabolic Bone Disease due to diets. This can be fatal. ** If you should find a mother that is dead or hit by a car, check her pouch as more than likely, her babies are alive in there. They will need your help in order to live.

DUCKLINGS stay in groups, so if you do not see a mother around within a couple of hours, it needs rescuing.

RACCOON babies that have been seen for more than a few hours have probably lost their mother, since mother raccoons closely supervise their young and don’t let them out of their sight! You can put an upside down laundry basket over the baby (with a weight on top) and monitor for a few hours. Sometimes raccoon moms will wait until very late to retrieve her babies. Ask around to see if anyone in the neighborhood trapped an adult raccoon or saw one hit by a car. If you do not see the mother after a few hours, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator near you for assistance.

SKUNK babies do explore briefly at times away from its mother, yet it is more likely that the skunk has lost sight of the mother. Watch to see if the baby finds the den or if the mother retrieves him. You can put a plastic laundry basked upside down over the skunk to temporarily contain him while waiting for the mother to return. Approach the skunk slowly and talk softly – if the skunk gives a warning by stamping his front feet, then stand still or back off. You can approach again after the skunk calms down. As baby skunks get older, they sometimes come out to explore while the mother is away. Most of the time, however, they don’t appear without her – so if you repeatedly see the baby outside alone, he may be orphaned. If the skunk appears to be truly orphaned, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator near you.

SQUIRRELS should be taken indoors for the night if the mother hasn't come back and you can try again in the morning. Squirrels often have a secondary nest if one should fall out of a tree. The mom should come back to retrieve her babies when she feels it’s safe.

DEER will rarely be seen mother and baby together. If you should see a fawn lying down without its’ mother, leave it there until morning and if it has not moved, mom may not be returning and please do call. You may not see mom during he day, but she is probably watching you. Stay away from baby so mom will feel safe to return.

BUNNY nests can be repaired. Skewer sticks, thin string can be placed in a tic tac toe formation over the top of the den. If they are moved the following morning, the mother has come back to take care of them. If not, they need your help. If bunnies are over 5 inches long, eyes open, and can hop, they do NOT need rescuing.
                                                        URGENT

ALL ANIMALS will avoid coming to retrieve their babies if humans are around. Please watch for signs of mom without being too close or animals seeing you.

As a general rule: If the baby is wandering around crying for an hour, it needs your help. If you do not know, place in a box close to where you found it. if the mother does not come back in 4-6 hours, it needs help.

Keep the baby or injured animal WARM and CONTAINED and QUIET. Put tissues or towels in the box or bag to keep it warm, and cover it. Darkness makes the animal feel more secure. Loud noises are scary, so keep that in mind when selecting a spot for the box. Keep it out of drafts and away from air conditioners. The box can be placed half on and half off a heating pad set on low. If the animal gets too warm it can move to the other end of the box. A water bottle filled with warm water taped (to prevent rolling around) to the inside of the box will work just as well.

If an animal or bird has been caught by a cat or dog get help immediately. Even if wounds are not visible, the animal or bird needs to be given antibiotics.

Please email if you need help

  fund4wildlife@gmail.com

Nuts for the squirrels that we are wintering over. The ones like this are the hardest. When I see them eagerly clutching for milk and see they sheen of health on their skin. Then with baby formula in hand you open the box and see the lifeless body that only the night before was thriving. It hurts.

The release site was already picked out. The bird rehabber that gave me these has a lake behind their center. I could go every day and lay out food until she learned to fend for her self. In my mind, I saw her walking along that lake and living the life she was born to. So today, the joy in what I do is gone. Yes, my room is full of the others. But for today, she is gone and her life is the one that matters.

Some pictures of some of the babies I am caring for. 26 infants came in this week alone.

The shrieks of my youngest daughter brought me running into the kitchen. The look on her face said it all. I knew what was coming as I saw her with the refrigerator door open: " You do know this is the most disgusting thing in the world don't you? You promised me you would not do this and here they are again! "

I attempted to get in a " yes, but...." as her finger pointed to the object of her wrath, an assortment of thawing rodents and slivers of beef heart in a zip lock bag.

This was lunch for the Mississippi Kites anxiously waiting for the delicacies that so repulsed my vegetarian daughter.

I dump the rodents on to a disposable plate to thaw outside by the door and began filling bowls with beef heart. After a sprinkling of calcium powder, a pinch of avian vitamins and a swoosh of the spoon I am out the door. The kites greet me with their frantic whistling and within seconds the bowl is encompassed by 15 bobbing heads.

A squawking from the aviary led me to check on the songbirds. I can always count on the blue jays to let me know when the meal worms bowl is empty. So it is back to the kitchen to cut up grapes and scoop up a few hundred meal worms that are quickly scattered over the grapes. The last bowl is filled with soaked Science Diet and breakfast is served to the blue jays, mockingbirds, kingbird's, sparrows and doves that occupied my aviary.

Since that day, the escape hatch portion of the aviary door was opened and I has the privilege and pleasure to see each bird released for a second chance at life.

As I watched the newly released Mississippi Kites soaring in the sky, riding high on the thermals I feel I have a glimpse into natures soul. I then remember them as they once were: tiny featherless infants, some barely alive when rescuers bring them to my door. This is why I work for free. This is my pay check.

If you live in Texas as I do and need help in dealing with a wildlife issue or help in locating a wildlife rehabber in your town, click here http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/rehab/list/

Help! I Found a Baby Rabbit

The bunnies look so helpless in the little depression in the lawn. They are so tiny and you keep going out and checking throughout the day and still no mother in sight. Surly, she would be there sitting with her babies if she were alive. So the best thing to do is bring them in and try to bottle-feed or maybe find a wildlife rehabber. Wrong…wrong…wrong!

Actually, rabbit mothers nurse their babies for about 5 minutes a day. The milk is very rich and the babies fill up to capacity within minutes. Mother rabbits do not sit on the babies to keep them warm. This is not because they are bad mothers. It is because they do not want to draw attention to the babies so they leave, which gives the impression that the babies have been abandoned.

If you come across a nest of bunnies and the mother is nowhere in sight, please DO NOT disturb them! By removing them from the nest you are greatly reducing their chances of survival. In fact, I would say you are sealing their fate of a premature death. Studies with rabbits in rehabilitation centers show there is a 90% mortality rate with orphaned baby rabbits in human care. This number increases if the rabbits are very young and their eyes still closed. They are extremely hard to "save". There is no substitute for the enzymes and cofactors in their mother's milk. Often they die a slow painful death from the formula literally putrefying in their little tummies.

If you have reason to believe the mother is not there. The following test will help you determine if that is the case. That evening take flour and use it to make a large, wide circle around the nest. Then leave the nest alone until the next morning. Check to see if there are rabbit tracks going through the flour to and from the nest. If there are, either the mother is returning to the nest or the babies are old enough to venture from the nest and eat on their own. Now just leave them alone. Even if this means mowing around a small patch in the yard for a short time.

As the babies age and are about the size of a tennis ball they will begin to wonder around and forage on grass. They still stay with mom and may go back to the nest. Do not rescue a baby the size of a tennis ball. It is not lost, it is just growing up and needs a safe place to learn. The best advise it just keep you dogs and cats out of the area until the rabbits move on.
That said, there are times when you know your dog has killed the mother. Sadly, this happens a lot. If this is the case, you need to put them in warm box with a soft cloth inside. Place the box away from pets and children. Wild baby rabbits are unlike any other species. They can literally drop dead from fear. The sound of your voice, your sent, the noises in your home are all terrifying to a baby rabbit. Fear and compromise an already undeveloped immune system and cause death even later on.
As a wildlife rehabilitator I am always researching protocols to increase my success rate with all species but especially the cottontails. At this point I have 10 infant rabbits in my care, all with eyes still closed. The first 5 came in when they were just 2 days old. I am using a new protocol with my babies this year and I am excited about the results so far. I am incorporating Dr. Ohhira Probiotics into their formula. Although I have used probiotics before, these are unique in their composition and are manufactured for human consumption. I have lost only one baby thus far and am hopeful they may survive. Though, with bunnies with eyes still closed, things can change in instant. In addition, I will be using cecotropes into their diet since Blanca & Emy Aaron have graciously allowed me to borrow their beloved pet rabbit to provide the babies with life saving cecotropes. For this I am so gratful!

I will be posting my exact protocol from the first day the new babies arrived with photos and video soon.

For emergency care of baby rabbits:

Step
1

Warm goat milk or Zoologic Milk Matrix ( available online) formula, so it is warm to the touch, but not hot.
Step
2

Hold baby upright. Using a small syringe, such a 1ml insulin syringe (needle removed) or eyedropper, slowly release formula into the side of the mouth. Newborn, hairless bunnies will need about a half milliliter of warm formula every two to three hours. Bunnies with their eyes tightly closed and ears flat to their head, but fully furred, will eat approximately approximately 2 ml per feeding. The amount increases as their size and weight increase. Generally, you want to feed until the stomach feels full and round, but not tight or hard.
Step
3

Immediately after feeding, stimulate the bunny to eliminate waste. This can be accomplished by gently rubbing its genitals with a moist Q-tip. This imitates the way the mother would lick the baby to stimulate elimination.
Step
4

If you have access to a healthy, adult rabbit, borrow some cecotropes (night droppings.) These nutrient-rich, soft stools are eaten by rabbits directly from their anus, and babies gain much nutrition from eating the cecotropes of their mothers. You can offer cecotropes to bunnies as their eyes are about to open.

Step
5

After the babies eyes open, beging putting the a jar lid filled with formula in the box. They leaern to self fed very early. At 3 to 4 weeks of age, begin introducing solid food, such as baby rabbit pellets, dandylion greens. Gradually reduce bottle feeding once the rabbit is on solid foods.

If you would like to contact me about a baby rabbit or other orphaned wildlife email me at fund4wildlife@gmail.com.

Guest Contributors

From time to time guest writers will post their views on this blog. He rode a donkey in triumph into Jerusalem on that great day of the feast. He is prophesied to return again in glory as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, riding on a white horse (Revelation 19:11).

Also, the Holy Spirit is symbolized by a dove.(John 1:32) He chose to reveal Himself as like a pure and gentle bird (Matthew 3:16) at Jesus' baptism.

It's so sad but did you know millions of wild animals die painful, lingering deaths in vicious traps every year? Not for food - for furs! Millions more are bred on fur farms and slaughtered for fashion.

The beauty industry inflicts untold agony on a million animals every single year for perfumes, lipsticks and other cosmetics. There are more than adequate synthetic alternatives, but such is man's sinful inhumanity towards God's animal kingdom and the slaughter continues today.

In the name of science, millions more animals suffer in laboratories worldwide every year. In the first chapter of the Bible, God made humankind responsible for His animals (Genesis 1-28). All animals are God's animals (Psalm 50:10) and we are answerable to God for our treatment, care and protection of them.

Let's never forget that the welfare and protection of animals is an essential part of our Christian responsibility. All caring Christians should make known their opposition to such cruel practices as vivisection. We must determine to do all in our power to bring about the speedy abolition of all such mistreatment and tortures of animals.
God promised Believers he would give them a tender heart...

"And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart." (Ezekiel 36:26 NLT)

So as Christians who want to love and please God let's be tender hearted and share your love with these animals God expects us to care for them as we share life on this earth with them.

Not a Christian?

Did you know that Jesus abolished animal sacrifices and so Christianity has always rejected the need for blood shed of animals. (Hebrews 9:12, 26).

It is only mankind who needs forgiving and saving, and also teaching as to how to worship (Psalm 36 & 51), the animal kingdom worships God continually and naturally.

You know, most of us imagine that in God’s eyes we are just one of millions of people upon the earth. We imagine most people don’t really seem to think we are important and so we assume God thinks of us in a similar way. But then, again, God is not like ‘most people.’ We feel that God has favorites and we vision we’re a far way down the list, but the way we feeling do not correspond to reality. To God, YOU are very special to him.

God loves you with his whole heart. He loves you with every speck of his enormous love. That means no matter how much he loves others, he couldn’t possibly love anyone else more than he loves you.

Scripture makes no promise that you will always feel loved, nor that circumstances will always make it obvious that you are loved. God simply promises that you are loved. No suffering or tragedy will ever separate you from God’s love (Romans 8:35-39). A snap-shot in time proves nothing. Only eternity’s movies can adequately portray the infinitude of God’s love for you.

That's the good new and now for the bad news...

The Bible tell us the punishment for sinning again our Holy God....is death. This means because of our sinning we have earned eternal death and that we deserve to die and be separated from God forever.

"For the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 6:23)

BUT... since there was no way we could make our self right with God...Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) The Bible says Christ took the punishment that we deserved for our sins. Placed it upon Himself, and died in out place. He was buried, and three days later he rose from the dead to offer us eternal life as a free gift.

There is only one way of salvation today for mankind and that is through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ - the Lamb of God who died to redeem sinful mankind (Revelation 5:12, 13). He died with the result that no other animals need die . . . for man's sinfulness.

What is your response to Christ? Would you like to place your trust in Jesus right now? It if you place your trust in Christ, why not say a short prayer with me right now and we will thank God for having saved you and given you the gift of eternal life.

"Dear God....I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose from the dead. I have trusted Christ alone as my savior. Thank you for your forgiveness and everlasting life that I now have.

In Jesus' name, amen."

If you would like to discuss this article or if you are seeking spiritual direction you can leave a comment for Reverend Hanratty in the comment section.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fund4wildlife.blogspot.com/2010/04/christianity-humane-treatment-of.html' title='Christianity & injured birds that were brought to me. Most rescuers do not think about the expense involved in wildlife rehabilitation. There are special formulas to be purchased for each species, monthly shipments of mealworms for the birds, and other nutritious foods they must have.

While my husband built an incredible song bird aviary with funds out of our family budget. I knew we just could not afford to build the outdoor enclosures we would need to fulfill our goal of helping orphaned mammals as well. We had begun taking in orphaned squirrels, opossums, and rabbits but had to transfer them to another rehabber to prepare them for a life in the wild.

But then my brother Jim, an Amazon.com book-seller donated 4,000 books. When my husband Jesse came home with a pickup and trailer full of books we began the process of starting our Fund4Wildlife bookstore on Amazon.com and more recently on Bonanzle.com

Since that time, Jesse & I go to book sales all over the state to keep our inventory high. We frequent estate sales, garage sales and anywhere we may find books! Oh, how I would love to be like Better World Books and have books donated in Kiosks.

But, I recently received a portable heated pet bed that stays warm for 16 hours so taking our babies will be much less of on ordeal.

The photos above show the squirrel enclosure we were able to have built using our Amazon bookselling funds. There are three large enclosures in the door going into the main enclosure and exceed state requirements. Now, we are fundraising for a room to house our infants, since human children now occupy the space that I had my four legged babies in.

To Rescue or Not to Rescue?

Baby animals have the best chance at survival if they remain with their mothers and often the mom knows exactly where they have tucked their youngsters-- and will come back. Finding a baby out on its own doesn't necessarily mean it needs human intervention. I will discuss some tips to help you decide to rescue or not to rescue.

Contrary to popular belief parent animals will respond to distress cries and return to their young. It is a myth that they abandon their young if touched by human hands.

Never remove a baby from where you found it without determining whether or not it really needs help. A healthy baby will have a glossy coat, round, bright eyes and a healthy sense of self-preservation and may try to get away from you.

Exception: Pink, hairless babies with eyes closed are in grave danger if they are separated from their mothers for even a short time.

Is it snuggled in a hole in the ground, or hidden under a bush? Mom may be nearby.
Is the mother bird flying at you or do you hear a mammal making threatening sounds from a distance. She is saying I am here-leave my baby alone!
Is there a tree nearby from which it could have fallen? You can put a baby back in the nest or if perching, on a tree limb.
Is it obviously injured? Can you see blood, puncture wounds or a broken bone? Are there flies around it? Does it seem weak or unable to use its legs? Then you need to intervene and get it to a wildlife rehabber in your area.

Baby birds on the ground with most of their feathers and a short tail are fledglings learning to fly; you should leave it on the ground.
You must place a nestling (no feathers, eyes shut) gently back in a visible nest.

A tiny bunny with eyes still closed will die without mothers milk. Unless you KNOW for sure mom is dead!! ( you see the body or your dog killed it-LEAVE THEM THERE! Older bunnies can be placed back in their ground nests and covered with grass or other greenery. You will NEVER see a mother rabbit with her babies

Raccoons pups are almost never far away from their mothers, but the mothers will wait for you to leave before they approach.

If the animal is truly orphaned or injured call a wildlife rehabilitator. Place the baby in a container, lined with soft cloth, tissues or paper towels. Try to avoid any kind of terry cloth, as toenails can be caught in its loops. Cover the baby with cloth and put the covered (but not sealed) container poked with holes for ventilation and place in a dark, quiet, warm place away from children and pets.

If you have a heating pad, set it to low and place the container halfway on the pad.
If the baby needs help call a wildlife rehabilitator. Next, place the baby into a container, lined with soft cloth, tissues or paper towels. Try to avoid any kind of terry cloth, as toenails can be caught in its loops. Cover the baby with cloth and put the covered (but not sealed) container poked with holes for ventilation and place in a dark, quiet, warm place away from children and pets.

Do not give the baby anything to eat or drink unless instructed to do so by your wildlife rehabilitator.

A fast way to find a rehabber in your town is to Google “ wildlife rehabilitator+your towns name”or call your local humane society or vet for a referral.

A rescuer called us that their dog killed this bunnies mom and sibling-in cases like this always bring in the baby & seek help:

Rehab:The Good -The Bad - The Ugly

The caller was a volunteer at a humane society in a nearby county. She is dedicated and has loving heart for the animals and is willing to drive over forty minutes to get the wildlife out of her animal shelter and to me. With so many puppies, kittens and abandoned pets in animal shelters they are not set up to care for high needs of orphaned baby animals. They simply don’t have the staff , volunteers, or supplies they need to handle everything. So when she said she had an infant squirrel that had been in the animal shelter for days, I instantly had a flashback to the horrid conditions many of them have arrived in when held there.

When she arrived, my expectations were correct. In the box I found a baby squirrel too young to eat on her own. Her fur in milk and dried banana that they had placed in her box. Her eyes were small slits from dehydration and her body was chilled. I knew she was in the fight for her very life.

Her new box was warm from the heating pad I had placed under it while waiting for her to arrive.

I had to get her body temperature to normalize before I began hydration. But she just would not warm up. So I took a tube sock and filled it with rice, microwaved it until warm and snuggled her little body around the sock. Minutes later, she was warming up. A few more minutes with her belly on top of the warm sock we were ready to start the slow reversing the dehydration with Pedialyte.

I wrapped her in the warm sock to retain her body heat and drop by drop got 3cc of fluid down her. I repeated this all afternoon until I went to bed that night. Her eyes seem brighter, she loved to drink the pedialyte. She clutched the syringe with her little paws when I took it away from her to refill it. I gave her as much as she wanted until she feel asleep and would take no more.

I found her in the early morning far from her warm sock on the corner of her tub barely breathing. I took the sock to the microwave to warm it but when I got back she was dead.

Despite all these years of doing rehab I don’t get used to it. So I set up a facebook page and a blog so everyone can see the babies as they come in and some of those that have been released. All of this is new to me & is a work in progress.

Feel free to email if you need help with on orphaned animal. This is the fastest way to reach me. Well, off to finish the facebook page.

Blessings,

Mary
