We continue to populate the 70’s. In this one, the ending was just too weird. We used a stunt double for safety purposes. He’s actually a star of the stage, as he’s been in several local productions when they needed a body under a sheet.

Although I am glad that the ankle pick is in the repertoire of Shaolin Kempo, we already got one in Combination 11.

The footwork in this one raises a question or two, but we tried to keep it ‘as written’. Remember, Chris and I have been working from the archive descriptions that I’ve been able to collect, so there has been a lot of behind the scenes figuring. Speaking of Chris, he works third shift besides teaching, so sometimes he’s coming in on zero sleep just to help me out. You have to appreciate friends like that.

Combination 78 – Did they get a bulk discount on Tiger Claws?

This one is pretty elaborate, and goes big on the tiger claw content. Chris and I had some opinions on some parts, and I go into that in the video. Upon further review, the double tiger claw strike portion should probably have the lower claw go to the groin. Take a look and see if you agree with my suggestions for possible edits. The Kajukenbo Alphabets

Often people notice that there are / were 26 combinations or so up to black, and hear about the Kajukenbo Alphabets and wonder – is there a connection? I certainly did. There is a video on YouTube that demonstrates the combinations. It’s by Mitch Powell, historian of the KSDI, and that’s about as authoritative as it gets. It’s shot clearly, and includes reverse angles. I watched the whole thing, and in my opinion, there’s not a whole lot of overlap. There are a few flashes of ‘maybe that piece’ but they were few and far between. Take a look for yourself.

Combination 76

This one has the spirit of ’76 – like a revolution. Mainly the French Revolution. Why? The Guillotine. From an odd setup, you finish with a guillotine. I ended up editorializing quite a bit on this one. I don’t think you should drop into a guillotine, but should rather remain standing to complete the choke. Unless you have a fairly good grappling background, you could be opening yourself up to trouble. There are some details that need to be addressed, and simply dropping to the ground to finish it can open you up to some nasty counters.

Combination 72

Next up it’s back to the 70’s. Let’s see if you think Combination 72 is groovy. It starts with a double parry, and flows fairly nicely. The ending is a little strange, but all in all, it’s fairly sound. Thanks again to Chris Hatch for punching in and Ken Warner for sending in the description. With all of the reviewing of the combination descriptions, this seems to have elements from some that I’ve done recently, but I can’t put a finger on it. I’ve reviewed some of the ones that I’ve worked on most recently, but can’t seem to find a match. Does this ring any bells with you? This one took a little work to get correct, and as such the intro discussion is a little longer than some previous videos.
