They are having an ongoing problem with their IP addresses being blacklisted by SpamCop, one of the major players in the "spam lists" industry. We've seen this bug before, and eventually it was corrected. If your custom app is not resizing (gets scroll bars or cut off at the bottom), please be patient. Facebook has acknowledged the bug and has assigned it as <a href="http://bugs.developers.facebook.net/show_bug.cgi?id=17577" target="_blank">bug 17577</a>. However, I just tested several apps on client pages and I don't see the resizing issue. It's possible that's because I found a javascript tweek the last time we saw this bug (yep- second time around on this bug). So fingers crossed that the "fix" doesn't break something else. Ever wonder how, in Facebook, to link to another person or page without copy/pasting a long link? Here's how:</p> <ul> <li>First, you must be a friend or a fan of the person/page.</li> <li>Then all you do is start typing their name. Yep... it's a new feature of Facebook. In the "good ol' days" you used to preface their name with the "@" symbol. Now... just start typing their name. Facebook will pop-up their name for you. Then select the name.</li> </ul> <p>There are a <strong>couple of weird things</strong> to be aware of:</p> <ul> <li>If you are doing this in a "post" it works fine. But if you are doing it in a "comment" underneath a post, it doesn't always work correctly. I've noticed that "pages" won't be found by just typing. You still have to type the old "@" symbol to get the popup.</li> <li>In a "comment" (not a "post"), if you are typing a person's name and are looking for the popup, you must capitalize the first letter of their name. Otherwise, you gotta use the "@" sign first.</li> <li>On "names" (not "pages"), after you select the name from the drop down menu, &nbsp;you can now backspace out part of their name (like the last name) in order to shorten it. You still must use ONE LOGIN to enter the Facebook Universe (having two logins is a violation of FB TOS). However, once you login, you may choose a "Profile" or a "Page" identity to relate to others in Facebook. That choice can be made in the Account Settings found in the upper right hand corner of anyplace that you might be in Facebook at the time (Account~Use Facebook as XYZ).</p> <p>But I often switch my identity while I'm on my page. There are many things that happen when you switch to using Facebook as a page... most of them a bit frustrating and feature-limiting. And I have found that doing this switch numerous times through the day creates a bit of a split personality problem for me and others. Maybe it will end up getting its own ICD9 Code. I dunno. The penalty for not complying with them (I know, I sound like a Borg Drone) is catastrophic. Your promotion can be mentioned on the Wall, but it may not be administered from the Wall. You may require that a participant "Like" your page in order to see the promotion details and to enter the promotion (through use of a "reveal" tab). But misery loves company, so let's dig in and solve our problems together. First, we need to be on the same page (pun intended) so we assume for purposes of this post that you have read the excellent post by <strong><a href="http://hyperarts.com/" target="_blank">HyperArts</a></strong> and the Facebook Developers explanation of&nbsp;<a href="http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/javascript/fb.canvas.setsize/" target="_blank">FB.Canvas.setSize</a>: and HyperArts article on <a href="http://www.hyperarts.com/blog/facebook-iframe-apps-getting-rid-of-scrollbars/" target="_blank">getting rid of scrollbars</a>.</p> <p>We also assume that you have tried following many tutorials and expert discussions on the web related to this subject. And you are still stuck. If that's you... I've been there too. With deep thanks to <a href="http://hyperarts.com/" target="_blank">Tim Ware</a> and <a href="http://www.koss.co.uk/" target="_blank">Martin Koss</a>, I will chronicle my journey to the Promised Land of no scroll bars!</p> <ol> <li>I found out that there were often bugs in play on the Facebook side of things. So if things *used to work* and they suddenly don't today... don't panic. Watch and wait... follow HyperArts and others to see if a bug is reported. Then vote for the bug and follow it.</li> <li>Once I ruled out bugs (or they were fixed by Facebook) I was left with the reality that not all browsers will work with the Javascript SDK in the same way. I learned that I must test everything in every browser known to mankind. &nbsp;So a little help from your friends goes a long way. Don't assume "stuff works" just because it works in *your* browser. Firefox on a Mac may handle the code differently than Internet Explorer on a PC. You get the idea.</li> <li>You *must* use a body style, whether inline or in your external stylesheet, that sets "overflow:hidden." You can style it inline as&nbsp;<strong>&lt;body style="overflow:hidden;"&gt;</strong> or in your stylesheet as&nbsp;<strong>body {overflow:hidden;}</strong> but this is a <strong>must do</strong>.</li> <li>I learned by testing that you can "cheat" and include height paramaters in the&nbsp;FB.Canvas.setSize. This has been widely recommended, and it works. But if you are creating a template for your own future use or others' use.. or if you will be embedding dynamic content which resizes... this could pose a challenge. Plus... it just bugged me that I should have to do that since the point of the whole system is to *not* require such a workaround.</li> <li>So assuming that you have set the overflow:hidden command properly, and the rest of your stuff is in place correctly... it all comes down to using the correct javascript script in the head section. And for the majority of us who may be "good enough" html and css coders... javascript (at least for me) can be a bit scary. So here are the several versions of that script that I have tried, along with my comments. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me and tell me where the correct bug is.</p> <p><strong>To all of my retail clients</strong>... this does *<strong>not</strong>* affect our ability to setup our existing custom apps for your pages... so keep telling your friends about our cool tabs. We can still set these up. But unfortunately, for the moment, we're unable to setup a new Earthquake app as well as a new DM app we were working on.</p> <p>It seems that other developers out there are experiencing the same problem, so it's a genuine problem. It seems that we are missing two fields of information in the Facebook Integration section. Unlike the "other" custom tabs out there which were built using FBML, this tab won't disappear at the end of the year. Yep... you heard it correctly... any custom tabs you have that have a "gray icon" next to the link... say "bye bye" because Facebook is eliminating them at the end of the year.</p> <p>If you have "another" vendor who supplied you with a custom tab before March 11, 2011... ask them what they are going to do to update your current tab.
