Happy new year everyone! Here are immediate dates for your brand new 2014 filofaxes! There will be a kata session on Monday 6th January as normal. Bokken, hakama and kendogi will be needed. We start back on the 8th January and the first 2-3 weeks will be kangeiko. Bring yourselves, your shinai and lose clothing (not hakama and kendogi). Our next beginner's night will be the 29th of January so if you are interested in starting or know of anyone that wants to give it a go, then please e mai lme on jwillmott03@gmail.com. Congratulations to Michelle and Anthony for their grading success in Gateshead this weekend. Michelle achieved Ikkyu and Anthony came away with Ni-dan, both amazing results and testament to their continued practice and focus, well done. Also Manchester's Rick Edmondson and Bogdan Parzych both passed their San-dan gradings.

Additionally a big congratulations to Joe and Josh, who alongside Manchester's Yutaka Matsubayashi came 3rd in the Northern Cup. The winning team also included Manchester's Tom Widdows and Rick Edmondson so it was quite a showing from North West kendo. Amazing fighting spirit from all involved as well as the other Liverpool and Manchester kendoka who graded and competed.

Don't forget that it is beginners night tomorrow. Just a couple of things to remember; don't forget to wear loose comfortable clothing, if you have any injuries let someone know at the start, if you are under 18 years old, we are sorry but you won't be able to practise due to legislation.

Don't forget that we are back in bogu next week. We have now finished kangeiko and completed around three and half thousand cuts over the two nights. Over the next next year we all need to set ourselves long term targets (e.g. the next grade, winning a competition), but to reach these targets we need to hit smaller ones. Correcting our posture, relaxing our arms to cut, improving our breathing etc are weekly targets that we should always be working on. THE BASICS are what kendo comes from (remember to look after the little things and the big things will look after themselves). So, ask yourself the question "what will I do to improve my kendo?", because Sensei can only show us the door, we are the ones that have to walk through it. I would suggest you try three things, keep a kendo diary (for musings and really good points you have learnt, push yourselves and travel and fence as many people as possible).

2012 End of year message from Sensei

Last practice this year was last night, 19/12/12. I am looking forward to the new year. The club has made slow progress but still going forward.We would like to wish Josh good luck in Denmark, looking forward to seeing him back in July 2013. Hopefully 2013 should be a good year for us all. Geoff and Martin are now 2kyu, good luck. Also welcome to Mike, Michelle, and Andrew who have stayed with us.We are looking forward to the new year with them,.

Situations vacant - news reporter

Not sure if Sensei mentioned this last night as I wasn't there but that is the point of this news update. Since being forced to stop Wednesday practice due to medical reasons I have not always been able to keep up with the regular goings on. I feel this disconnect is detrimental to the club, in particular there have been quite a few tournaments and events the club has participated in that have gone unreported and uncelebrated here.

Everyone taking part in those events will have been praised for their efforts on return to the dojo or through the Facebook group. The greater concern is that the website is often the first port of call for prospective new members and if there are no records of the club taking part in competitions, succeeding at gradings or being active then there will be little incentive for people to join. At worse folk may even believe the club has ceased to exist and not bother investigating further.

Therefore, I am hoping there is a current member or members of the club who would like to volunteer to help with the news reporting. This can either be by forwarding information to me about what's going on and I can add it to the blog or by providing me with their email address so I can give direct access to the blog to update as you wish.

The choice is yours, ideally it will be someone who is attending regularly, confident in writing, computer literate enough not to be afraid of the blog/email and be online enough to provide updates as and when needed. You can be as active as you like but the bare minimum would be to report all those things that need reporting - seminars, competitions, gradings, visitors. Essentially what I've been doing up to this point, so you can see how regular that is. I'll still be available to help out but as a club we need someone to step up and either be the new voice on the website or the new reporter to feed me the information to share on the blog.

Sensei is very pleased that Liverpool Kendo club reached the final of the taikai at the weekend. Overall the three teams did very well and most team members entered the individuals and also did well.

Just to remind everyone that next Wednesday is Beginner's Night. For existing members please try to be on time so we can get ready and please bring any spare shinai you have.

Beginners please be in the dojo no later than 7:15pm so we can go through all the Health and Safety aspects. Please remember to wear loose fitting clothes, tracksuit pants or three-quarter shorts are ideal. For more information click the Beginners link on the website. Just a reminder that your first session is free and if you cannot manage it this week then we will only accept new beginners up to October 3rd [next week]. If you miss these dates anyone wishing to start kendo will have to wait until the next Beginner's Night in January 2013
