The Kenmare Walking Weekend takes place again this year, during the June bank holiday weekend. A range of A and B graded walks are planned, along with more gentle strolls for all the family.

Here are some of the planned events:

Gleninchiquinn Walks

Gleninchiquinn “A” 12.5 Km Ascents 870 Km
We start this strenuous walk at Uragh Stone Circle, climbing up the Coomnadiha (664m) with spectacular view overlooking Uragh Oak Wood and Gleninchiquinn Lakes. Our route now takes us into the heart of the Caha Mountains, around the back of Gleninchiquinn Waterfall and onto Knocknagor raveela (507m).We descend by the Naulagowna River ti]o finish our walk in the Gleninchiquinn Park. Refreshments are available in the park café

Gleninchiquinn “B” 10KM Ascent 420M
Starting at Uragh Stone Circle we follow scenic winding country road along the shore of Gleninchiquinn Lake. Surrounded by steep mountains we arrive at Gleninchiquinn Park. A brief stop is in order here to admire the Waterfall which forms a dramatic backdrop to the Park. A mountain track takes us to the top of the Waterfall with its breath-taking views of the lake and valley. You have a choice here of departing from the track and walking around the upper valley or continuing on the track and walking around the upper valley or continuing on the track and descending to the base of the waterfall where we end our walk.

Gleninchaquinn “C” WALK – “The Farm Walk (1 hour) and “River Walk” (40mins). These two walks together should be completed in less than 2 hours. Walking on the valley floor with little or no climbing you will enjoy the tranquillity of the Glen and the farm animals and you are never far from the Café or picnic tables. An excellent introduction to Gleninchaquin and we are sure you will want to return again in your own time with your friends and loved ones to enjoy this magnificent Park.

Bonane Walks

Walk “A” Borlin to Molly Gallivans 18KM Ascent 700M
Beginning at the head of the Borlin Valley we climb to Knockboy, the largest peak in Cork, with views of Bantry Bay and Kenmare we cross the Priest Leep. Continuing on the Cork/Kerry border to Barraboy we are rewarded with the views of the Sheen Valley and Glengariff Harbour. The last leg of the walk follows the Beara Way to Moly Gallivans.

Walk “B” Cailleach Beara Loop 12 KM Ascents 450M
Starting at Molly Gallivans you climb through the old farm to the top of Relagh, having views of the Sheen River ahead you can see the summit of Barraboy to the south. From this point you can see the full loop of your walk, you can continue across the N71 and cross the “Iron Bridge” to join the Beara Way to Esk Mountain. A beautiful ridge walk, with the views of the Bantry Bay and Kenmare Bay, takes you towards Turners Rock with your route leading you into Esk Valley. You will follow the path back to Molly Galllivans.

Walk “C” Druid Loop 5KM Ascents 80KM
Starting at Molly Gallivans this ramble gives you opportunity to investigate the traditional farm, you cross the stile to the top of Releagh, follow the loop to the”Iron FootBridge”. You will be treated to marvellous views of the Bonane Valley; you will be able to identify the outline of magnificent Ring Fort in the Heritage Park.
Irish times article: Walking the Iveragh Peninsula

A six-day break in Ireland in the off season may not seem like the best of ideas. However, hope springs eternal and it was under this premise that we headed to the Iveragh Peninsula, Co Kerry and our first stop Kenmare. We had been there many times before and had even stayed in the town on a couple of occasions. Kenmare is at the head of that beautiful stretch of water, the Kenmare River. It is strategically positioned on the Kerry Way and provides easy access to the Caha Mountains and the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks. Also, Kenmare is an important and welcome oasis on the Ring of Kerry.

The Irish Times’ Francis Bradley extolls the virtues of walking in the Iveragh Peninsula during the off season, in this Saturday’s Paper.
