Scent

Floral scents are not just for women. Choosing the scent of your candle is much like choosing a perfume, it is relative to an individual. We all have smells that we prefer and some people are more sensitive to fragrance than others. A good scented candle should realise/disperse its smell evenly over time.

It is important to think about where your candle is going to be situated. For example if you want a scent for the bedroom, you will want something soothing or relaxing, nothing too strong.

Lavender is believed to be a calming fragrance as well as being able to sooth anxiety. It is also proven to relax the body and mind to improve sleep quality.

More recently, it has been said that Jasmine, with its delicate white petals and sweet smell, packs a surprising sleep punch. People that have tested this had an overall better quality sleep and surprisingly, its affects were even more powerful than those of lavender.

Having said that, any fragrance that makes you happy can promote a sense of calm and help promote sleep. When you smell something that brings back a fond memory or makes you feel excited (such as the smell of sunscreen) your body naturally realises good, relaxing chemicals that act as a good set up for a great sleep.

Burn time

The burn time is affected by shape and size, the wax and what position the wick is in. There is no point having a beautifully fragrant candle if it is short lived.

The wick should be kept short, If your wick is long, the flame will be bigger, making the candle burn quicker and if the wick is not central to the candle, your candle will burn unevenly and can cause thick black soot on the glass. The longer your candle burns for a) the more you get for your money b) you get to enjoy the fragrance for longer.

Design

Although the main focus of a scented candle is the smell, to some of us, the look or design of what the candle is in, is equally important.

Yes, scented candles help create an atmosphere but when it is not lit, it becomes something of an ornament. Some of our scented candles are presented in a Posy vase which look great lit, or unlit. On the plus side you can re-use the vase after the candle has burnt out.

Space

Think about what room you are buying a scented candle for. For example, a downstairs w/c is much smaller than other rooms in the house. So you wouldn’t want something too over powering in there. Whereas if you was buying a scented candle for a kitchen, then you may want something strongly scented to disguise the smell of cooking etc.

Placing your scented candle in a well ventilated room, or somewhere where there is lots of traffic e.g. your hallway, will help the scent disperse throughout wider areas of your home. This way you will be getting the most out of your scented candle, as well as enjoying the fragrance throughout your house.

Filling your home with your favourite scented candles or reed diffusers brings a feeling of luxury into each room. Whether you choose a floral scent to make your home feel fresher, or you choose a more intense spicy fragrance to create that warm, cosy vibe in your home – it is unique to you and how it makes you feel.

Reed diffusers are easy to use and release constant fragrance throughout the day.

The reeds are inserted into the glass bottle with the scented oil, the reeds soak up the scent and release a pleasant aroma around your home. Reed diffusers do not require any heat (unlike a candle) they disperse scent into the air naturally.

Usually reed diffusers last 16-18 weeks depending on where you place it. If it is sat in direct sunlight, the oil will evaporate quickly.

Flipping the reeds helps the scent develop but this will also make the oil evaporate faster.

You should position your diffuser in front of a vented area to help the fragrance disperse faster throughout the room. It works well by interior doorways, in hallways and bathrooms, where you will notice the change in scent as you move from one area to the next.

There is something almost magical about this time of year. The smell, the sounds and the colours of autumn are truly breath-taking. The ground is covered in bursts of yellow, orange, green and gold and (if we are lucky) the skies are blue and the true beauty of Britain’s seasons stands out in all its glory.

Many people get together to celebrate over the coming months. From the tradition of Harvest Festival and the excitement of costumes and pumpkin carving on Halloween, to the thrill of Guy Fawkes and bonfire night. It is the perfect time of the year for wrapping up and getting involved.

Every year hundreds of farms are busy producing fields full of pumpkins and squashes, for individuals and families to go along and pick their own pumpkins.

Whether it be for carving or baking, it is a perfect reason to get outdoors and create memories with loved ones or friends. Check out our recipe suggestion below to get some inspiration.

How to cook the perfect winter vegetable curry.

Ingredients

• 2 tbsp vegetable oil
• 2 onions thinly sliced
• ½ pumpkin, winter squash or butternut squash, cut into cubes
• 4 carrots, cut into batons
• 2 parsnips, cut in batons
• 3 tbsp curry paste (or gluten-free alternative)
• 8 large ripe tomatoes, 2 cut into wedges
• 6 garlic cloves, peeled
• thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and chopped
• small pack coriander, chopped
• 200g brown basmati rice
• 6 tbsp low-fat natural yogurt
• 100g mango, cut into cubes
• 1 tbsp mango chutney
• small pack toasted flaked almond

Method

1. Heat the oil in a large lidded pan. Tip in the onions and cook for 10 mins until soft. Stir in the pumpkin, carrots and parsnips, and cook for 5 mins until they begin to soften. Add the curry paste and cook for another 3 mins.

• In a bowl, whizz together the whole tomatoes, garlic and ginger until smooth, then pour over the vegetables, adding 200ml water. Save a handful of coriander to serve, and stir in the rest. Pop on the lid and simmer for 40 mins or until the vegetables are tender. Uncover, stir through the tomato wedges and reduce to thicken the sauce.
• Meanwhile, cook the rice following pack instructions. Mix the yogurt, mango and chutney in a small bowl. Fork the rice into a serving dish and scatter the curry with remaining coriander and the almonds. Season, then serve alongside the rice and fruity yogurt.

For those of you who enjoy planting flowers, I have hand selected my top tips for growing paperwhite narcissus flowers so you can enjoy the them from the comfort of your own home:

• Plant these bulbs in groups of 5 to 7 as this makes them look more balanced and full when they have bloomed. They are best planted in pots that do not have drainage holes and are between 6 and 8 inches wide.
• Grow these beautiful flowers in water rather than soil. It works just as well but being an indoor plant, water is easier to work with and dispose of and change.
• To stop the pots tipping with the volume of flowers, it is best to weigh the bulbs down, with some beautiful stones or marble chips. Only the bottom half of the bulbs need to be covered as the roots will anchor themselves by growing around and under your weight of choice.

Kenneth Turner recently got the amazing opportunity to go to Japan and visit the International Orchid and Flower show. The show is a dedication to flowers from all over the world, with a special appreciation for the orchid, which is in most of the exhibits.

Japan is home to the orchid; in Japan they have believed for centuries that the flower was a symbol of wealth. Orchids were owned by a lot of royalty who would keep them in the temples, castles and they would have them painted on scrolls. The orchid also represents love, beauty, luxury, strength and in some cultures a sign of fertility.

This amazing event features large scale exhibits of orchids, flower art and bonsai, flower-themed installations and digital art. There are workshops and personality events as well as different booths selling potted orchids, flower-themed crafts, home design items and other goods to allow visitors to get involved at home.

There are over 1200 people that apply to have their exhibits shown at this worldwide show. Only the best are handpicked to showcase their work to the thousands of people it brings in. It was such an amazing trip and Kenneth Turner were delighted to represent the brand in Japan!

One of our favourite things about this time of year is finally being able to get in the garden, so we have put together some of our favourite gardening tips for you all to enjoy!

• When mowing the grass, try mowing in different directions each time. If mowing the grass in the same direction continuously, it will actually cause the grass to bend away from the lawn mower, meaning it won’t look as nice.

• Prune your dead branches from your bushes and trees and make them look alive once again. This will also help other flowers and possibly even some fruits grow, giving some extra colour to your garden.

• Pansies, tulips, lettuce and peas all grow really well in the spring and it is the best time to plant them. They will be fully bloomed by the summer, giving your garden a range of beautiful colours and textures.

• If you are thinking about getting a bird feeder or already have one, make sure to place it on solid ground, like concrete. If placed on grass, the seeds from the bird feeder that fall to the ground will start to sprout as weeds. On solid ground there is no soil to supplement the growth of weeds.

• Decking, if you have it, can get discoloured and covered in dirt and grime from the winter. Get this cleaned in the spring and make any repairs early, by the time summer comes around you can kick back and relax and look at the beautiful garden you created.

On a separate note – we enjoy looking for recipes that include our favourite key ingredients of the month! This month we have found a wonderful pear & rose punch!

Ingredients

·         1L pear juice

·         1 vanilla pod

·         1 tbsp. golden caster sugar

·         4 cardamom pods

·         A few slices of root ginger

·         25ml raw apple cider vinegar

·         ½ tsp rosewater

·         250ml sparkling water

·         Ice

For the garnish

·         Rosemary sprigs

·         Thyme leaves – picked

·         Sliced red pear

·         A handful of frozen redcurrants

Method

1. Pour the pear juice into a large pan

2. Add the vanilla pod, golden caster sugar, cardamom pods and root ginger, then bring to a simmer

3. Leave to cool completely, then strain into a punch bowl or jug.

4. Add the raw apple cider vinegar, rosewater and sparkling water

5.Garnish with rosemary sprigs, thyme, sliced red pear and a handful of frozen redcurrants

6. Add ice and serve
