The course is not marked. Teams must find their way to remote checkpoints using topographic map and compass.

The Fig is the championship race in a series of four races held in Kentucky State Parks this year, known as the Unbridled Adventure Race Series. The first three races were shorter, beginner-friendly races meant to introduce newcomers to the sport and train them up for the Fig, the toughest and longest-running adventure race in the state.

The top five finishers in the series will share a $1,000 purse, and prizes will be awarded to winners in each division, as well. Photos and results from past races may be found at www.racethefig.com. Sometimes at night, when conditions are right, mists from the falls produce a faint rainbow, known as a moonbow. The moonbow may be visible after dark Oct. 27-31.

The Moonbow Trail Trek takes hikers during daylight hours to see the falls and other natural formations, including cascading streams, tower cliffs and house-sized rock formations. There is a 7-mile trek for the most adventurous hikers and a 4.5-mile trek for those with less experience. The 7-mile hike departs between 8:30 and 10 a.m. EDT, and the 4.5 mile trek leaves between 8:30 and 11 a.m.

Availability is limited, and participants must preregister by Oct. 25. Participation is limited to the first 100 people to register.

Check-in stations will be staffed throughout the hike and sweeps will be conducted to ensure safety. The Moonbow Trail Trek is not recommended for children under 10 years old or solo hikers. The cost is $15 per person and includes a T-shirt. Participants should bring a day pack, hiking boots, extra socks, a flashlight, batteries, rain gear, a first-aid kit, a warm jacket and enough food and water to last six to eight hours.

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin has a lodge, cottages, the Riverview Restaurant, a campground and hiking trails. For more information and to register for the Moonbow Trail Trek, call 1-800-325-0063 or 606-528-4121, or email Bret Smitley at BretA.Smitley@ky.gov

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park Celebrates 50th Year Since May Lodge Opened

by Gil Lawson
KY Department of Parks

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. – Jenny Wiley State Resort Park will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of May Lodge during the weekend of Oct. 19-20.

Tourism, Arts and Heritage Secretary Marcheta Sparrow and Kentucky State Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker will speak at a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary on Friday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. at the lodge.

The park is looking for photos from guests from the 1960s and will display them at the lodge.

On Saturday, Oct. 20, the park will host its Buffalo Night from 5-9 p.m. The menu will feature several buffalo dishes, fried chicken and catfish, along with vegetables, breads and desserts. In order to provide career assistance and professional development for artists, we would like artists with a disability, artist's associates, arts groups and educators to join us for an (un)conference. Unlike a typical conference, participants will create the agenda for each of the afternoon’s sessions onsite. Everyone is an expert, and everyone will have an opportunity to share professional needs, concerns, experiences and stories. Bring your ideas for sessions!

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The audience is the expert at the Kentucky Arts Council’s inaugural (un)conference, an event that will address career assistance, professional development and other issues related to working as an artist with a disability.

“We’re Listening: An (un)conference on careers in the arts for people with disabilities” will be 11:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Friday, June 29, at the Capital Plaza Hotel Ballroom, 405 Wilkinson Blvd., Frankfort.

“Artists with disabilities have the same concerns as any other working artist but may have additional or unique needs or challenges related to their work,” said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director. “We hope to identify those needs at the (un)conference, so that we can help improve the work and lives of artists with a disability in Kentucky.”

Unlike a typical conference, participants at the (un)conference will create the agenda for each day’s sessions on-site. All attendees are encouraged to share in the discussion or present on a topic of their choosing. Everyone will have an opportunity to share professional needs, concerns, experiences and stories.

“We would like for all artists, artists’ associates, groups and educators to consider participating,” said Sarah Schmitt, arts access director for the arts council and event organizer. “We are interested in hearing the stories and challenges of artists with disabilities so we might learn how to better provide educational and professional development opportunities to them.”

The event is free, and artists at all levels working in all media (visual art, literary art, performing art) are invited to attend. Registration is encouraged and is available online at: http://artscouncil.ky.gov/Opportunities/ArtsUnconference.htm

Kentucky individuals and organizations that would like to become involved in creating careers in the arts for people with disabilities may contact Schmitt at sarah.schmitt@ky.gov or (502) 564-3757, ext. 492.

The (un)conference is made possible through a grant from the National Arts and Disability Center at UCLA and the National Endowment for the Arts. It is part of an ongoing effort to provide statewide activities promoting careers in the arts for artists with disabilities. The arts council partners with other state organizations and agencies including VSA Kentucky, the Kentucky Center and the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The National Arts and Disability Center is a program of the Tarjan Center at UCLA, a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. The National Endowment for the Arts was established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government. The NEA extends its work through partnerships with state arts agencies, local leaders, other federal agencies, and the philanthropic sector. The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, creates opportunities for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.

This activity is free, and artists at all levels working in all media (visual art, literary art, performing art) are encouraged to attend.

For more information and to register for the conference:
http://artscouncil.ky.gov/Opportunities/ArtsUnconference.htm

National Trails Day Events set for June 2nd in Kentucky

by Gil Lawson
Department of Parks

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky will be taking part in National Trails Day on June 2 with events across the state to recognize the excellent trails in the Bluegrass State.

National Trails Day was launched by the American Hiking Society in 1993 to help promote exercise, trail development and the outdoors.
