When Whitney Johnson was a freshman at EKU she was pulled into a Collegiate Black Christian’s meeting by then-student president, Rob Thompson. She didn’t know much about the group, but was eager to get involved from the outset.

“I decided to stand at the door and tell people to come in and Rob told me it was called CBC. I didn’t even know what it stood for. So I was just standing at the door saying, ‘Everyone, come into CBC, it’s going to be fun,’ even though I didn’t know what we were doing.”

Whitney soon found CBC to be a warm environment where a lot of black students grew in their identity as Christians on campus. She said it was her interest in learning more about that Bible that drew her back every week.

About a year later she would become our women’s Bible study leader and student president. She credits her experiences with friends at CBC and her attendance at InterVarsity conferences as a major factor in her maturation.

“I didn’t even know I was a leader in any way, shape or form. Until I got to CBC, I didn’t realize I was using my leadership skills for ‘evil’. Instead of going out to parties or doing what I used to do, I could bring people to Bible studies.”

It was at our regional Chapter Camp ’08 in Georgia where she first heard about an upcoming mission’s trip to Ghana. She heard Joshua Settles explaining how obtaining a passport was the first step in the process. It was then that Whitney took a bold step of faith, although she was somewhat apprehensive at the same time.

“So after that I went up to his face and told him, ‘I’m getting a passport and I’m going to Ghana.’ And he said, ‘Okay.’ I didn’t know why I was getting a passport and I didn’t know why my heart was so set on it. I was like, ‘Why do I really want to get this passport?’”

She applied and was accepted to go on a 6 week mission’s trip to Ghana with other InterVarsity students and staff May – July 2010.

They teamed up with local ministries in Ghana, visiting villages, canvassing the area with evangelism, prayer and volunteering at an orphanage. Whitney taught English class at the orphanage. They also helped with a youth rally. While at the rally, Whitney had the privilege of leading 5 kids through prayer to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. She said there were at least 30 kids who made decisions to follow Jesus at the youth rally. Whitney explained how God moved in the midst of their prayer prior to the rally.

“We were supposed to have a youth rally or crusade, but no one shows up. We prayed, and all of a sudden people started walking out of their houses.”

Whitney said she is excited about God continuing to use her on campus and is thankful for growth in what she has desired most out of her experiences in Ghana.
“I think the main thing that He’s definitely gonna use me for is just using my abilities and not being shy. Now, I can clearly hear the Holy Spirit; I can hear what was me and what wasn’t me. That’s what I went on the trip for, I was begging for that. I think He’s gonna use me to be intentional and to definitely not keep my mouth shut about things that I know are wrong.”

We are praying and seeking Jesus our Lord about planting InterVarsity chapters at the University of Kentucky to compliment our Greek and International student work there. And at EKU to compliment our ministry targeting Black Students. Would you like to be involved? Contact ivcfky@gmail.com

In addition, we are dreaming about where to plant ministry next. WKU? Murray State? Jefferson Community College? Sullivan University? NKU?

Pray for God to open doors of opportunity and for InterVarsity Staff to be called and sent to new schools for our team!
