The Government Engineering College, Idukki was established in the year 2000.The College started functioning at Painavu in the Government buildings renovated for the purpose. Twenty Five acres of land at Kuyilimala near Painavu was transferred to the College for the construction of permanent campus in August 2000.The first batch of Students were admitted to the College in November 2000.

Owing to the delay in obtaining AICTE approval and as per the orders of the Honorable High Court of Kerala, three batches of Students admitted to the College were transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam (Govt.Engg.College,Pampady)in their final year. The AICTE team inspected the College in April 2003 and subsequently approval was granted for the 2003 - 04 admissions onwards.

About CET

The College of Engineering, Trivandrum was established in 1939 as the first Engineering College in the then Travancore State. The institution owes its foundation to the bold and inspired vision of Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the then Maharaja of Tranvancore.

Initially the College was housed in the former office and bungalow of the Chief Engineer (present PMG Office). Maj T.H. Mathewman, a Britisher was the first Principal. Started as a constituent College of Travancore University, the College had an initial intake of 21 students each for the Degree and Diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches. With the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late fifties, the College administration came under the control of the Government of Kerala. The College was shifted to the present sprawling 125 acres in 1960

Over the years, the intake of students increased and as of now with eight full-fledged departments offering eight undergraduate, 18 postgraduate and doctoral programmes under the University of Kerala, the College has around 3500 students, 280 teaching staff and 270 non-teaching staff. B.Tech., B.Arch, M.Tech, M.Plan and MBA and evening courses are offered by the ColLEGE.
