സുന്ദർലാൽ ബഹുഗുണ: ഇന്ത്യൻ പരിസ്ഥിതി പ്രവർത്തകനും ചിപ്കോ പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ നേതാവുമായിരുന്നു. ഉത്തരാഖണ്ഡിലെ ടെഹ്‌റി ഗഡ്‌വാൾ ജില്ലയിലെ ഒരു ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ജനിച്ചത്. സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമര പോരാളിയുടെ മകനും ഗാന്ധിയൻ അഹിംസാ തത്വങ്ങളിൽ വിശ്വസിച്ചവനുമായിരുന്നു ബഹുഗുണ. അലഹബാദ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ തത്വചിന്ത പഠിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ പഠനം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

ജീവിതവും പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളും:

1927 ജനുവരി 9 ന് ഉത്തരാഖണ്ഡിലെ മറോഡയിൽ ജനിച്ചു. 2021മെയ് 21 ന് ഋഷികേശിൽ 94ആം വയസ്സിൽ അദ്ദേഹം അന്തരിച്ചു. പരിസ്ഥിതി പ്രവർത്തകയായ വിമല ബഹുഗുണയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യ.

ചരിത്രപ്രസിദ്ധമായ ചിപ്കോ പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന സംഘാടകൻ: വനം വെട്ടുന്നതിനെതിരെ മരങ്ങളെ കെട്ടിപ്പിടിച്ച് പ്രതിഷേധിക്കുന്ന രീതി ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് ഈ പ്രസ്ഥാനം ശ്രദ്ധേയമായത്. 1970കളിൽ ഹിമാലയത്തിലെ മരം വെട്ടലിനെതിരെ നടന്ന അഹിംസാ പ്രക്ഷോപണമായ ചിപ്കോ പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ നേതാവായി ബഹുഗുണ മാറി. 'ചിപ്കോ' എന്ന പേര് വരുന്നത് ഹിന്ദിയിലെ 'ചിപ്‌കോ' (കെട്ടിപ്പിടിക്കുക) എന്ന വാക്കിൽ നിന്നാണ്. മരങ്ങൾ മുറിക്കുന്നതിനെ തടയാൻ പ്രവർത്തകർ മരങ്ങളെ കെട്ടിപ്പിടിച്ചാണ് പ്രതിഷേധിച്ചത്. നിരവധി മരങ്ങളെ രക്ഷിക്കാനും പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ജനങ്ങളിൽ അവബോധം ഉണ്ടാക്കാനും ചിപ്കോ പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന് സാധിച്ചു.

സുസ്ഥിത വികസനവും, ഹിമാലയൻ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ സംരക്ഷണവും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിച്ചു.

പരിസ്ഥിതി പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ജനങ്ങളില്‍ അവബോധം സൃഷ്ടിക്കാന്‍ 1981-83 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ 5,000 കിലോമീറ്റർ ഹിമാലയൻ യാത്ര നടത്തി. സുന്ദർലാൽ ബഹുഗുണ പരിസ്ഥിതിക്കും ഹിമവാന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനും വേണ്ടി ജീവിതം സമർപ്പിച്ച അസാധാരണ വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു.

പ്രാദേശിക സമൂഹങ്ങളുടെയും പരിസ്ഥിതിയുടെയും നേരെ ദോഷകരമായ ഫലങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന തേഹ്രി അണക്കെട്ടു പോലുള്ള വലിയ ഡാമുകളെ എതിർത്തു. 1980കളിൽ ഉത്തരാഖണ്ഡിലെ ഭാഗീരഥി നദിയിൽ നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ പദ്ധതിയുണ്ടായിരുന്ന വലിയ ടെഹ്‌റി അണക്കെതിരെ ബഹുഗുണ നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയ പ്രക്ഷോപണമായിരുന്നു അടുത്ത പോരാട്ടം. അണക്കെട്ട് ഒടുവിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ചെങ്കിലും അതിന്റെ ദോഷഫലങ്ങൾ ലഘൂകരിക്കാൻ ബഹുഗുണയുടെ ശ്രമങ്ങൾ സഹായിച്ചു.

നേട്ടങ്ങൾ:

2008 ൽ പരിസ്ഥിതി സംഭാവനകള്‍ക്ക് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ പൗരത്വ ബഹുമതിയായ പത്മ വിഭൂഷൺ ലഭിച്ചു. പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിനും സാമൂഹിക നീതിക്കും വേണ്ടി നിരന്തരം പ്രവർത്തിച്ച വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു ബഹുഗുണ.

ചിപ്കോ പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിലെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ 1980 ൽ ഹിമാലയത്തിൽ 15 വർഷത്തെ വനം വെട്ടി നശിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് നിയമവിരുദ്ധമാക്കുന്നതിൽ നിർണായക പങ്കുവഹിച്ചു.സുന്ദർലാൽ ബഹുഗുണ പരിസ്ഥിതിക്കും ഹിമവാന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനും വേണ്ടി ജീവിതം സമർപ്പിച്ച അസാധാരണ വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു.

അഹിംസാ പ്രവർത്തനം, പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണം തുടങ്ങിയവയോടുള്ള തന്റെ അടങ്ങാത്ത പ്രതിബദ്ധത കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള നിരവധി വ്യക്തികളെയും പരിസ്ഥിതി പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളെയും പ്രചോദിപ്പിച്ചു.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Idukki and a yellow alert for five other districts in Kerala.

This is because Kerala is expected to receive heavy rainfall (7-11 cm in 24 hours) accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds for the next five days.

Fishermen have been advised to avoid the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts. Cyclone is located over Lakshadweep. The National Center for Oceanography (INCOIS) has warned that rough seas are likely to occur high waves of 0.5 to 1.5 meters at Kerala coast till 11.30 tonight and 1.2 to 2.0 meters along south Tamil Nadu coast till 11.30 tonight.

Tomorrow there is a possibility of strong winds 40 to 45 Kmph over South West Bay of Bengal, Sri Lankan coast, south Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining Kanyakumari coast in Gulf of Mannar. This may raise up to 55 Kmph.

The alerts were issued because Kerala is expected to receive heavy rainfall for the next five days.

The Cheruthoni Bridge and Munnar - Bodimettu Road were inaugurated on Friday, January 5, 2024.

The inaugurations were reportedly held virtually, with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari officially opening both projects from a ceremony in Kasaragod. He is there to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for 12 National Highway projects worth Rs 1464 crore. This information directly aligns with the inauguration of the Cheruthoni Bridge and Munnar - Bodimettu Road, which were also officiated by Mr. Gadkari virtually from the ceremony in Kasaragod.

Cheruthoni Bridge

Located across the Periyar River downstream of the Idukki Reservoir.
120 meters long and 40 meters high, with three spans.
Features two lanes and sidewalks on both sides.
Constructed at a cost of 20 crores.
Expected to improve connectivity and boost tourism in the region.

Munnar - Bodimettu Road

Part of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway (NH85).
Extends 42 kilometers from Munnar to Bodimettu.
Upgraded from 4 meters to 14 meters wide.

Cost around 382 crores to complete.

Nehru Stadium Kottayam

State Disaster Management Authority of Kerala state said that a rainfall of 95 mm in the last 24 hours.

Calicut recorded 32.7 cms of rain. Wayanad recorded 19.3 cms and Peerumedu in Idukki district 18.5 cms.
Rainfall is expected to intensify into the night.

Heavy rain at Rajamalai in Idukki district killed 26 innocent people.

Several buried under the debris after landslide.

Kerala Goverment issued Red alert for Idukki and all of North Kerala, including Malappuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.
Orange alert issued at Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathnamthitta,Ernakulam,Thrissur and Palakkad.
Rivers overflowed in Kottayam, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta districts in central Kerala.

Malabar leaf fish catopra, pristolepis marginata is locally called chuttichi or andikalli. It is usually dark green in colour but the fins shows yellowish in colour. Its broad body is roughly rectangular in outline and laterally compressed with spines.It is native to freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia and India's Western Ghats.Its Max length may upto 15 cm a little boisterous hence the sale.Unlike many other nandids, this species inhabits clear flowing fast-moving streams and rivers.It is a carnivorous species also eats nuts and seeds.This species is an aquarium fish and also as a food fish.

The zig-zag eel (Mastacembelus armatus), also known as the tire-track eel or marbled spiny eel.It has a snake like body.It has no pelvic fins and its anal and dorsal fins are elongated and are connected to the caudal fin.It is usually sized up to 91 cm but usually exceed 51 cm in captivity.

It is a species of ray-finned, spiny eels belonging to the genus Mastacembelus. In local Malayalam language it is called Aarakan or Mookkanarakan.This species is an aquarium fish and also as a food fish.It is a nocturnal carnivores(active at night), eat insect larvae, earthworms, blackworms and some submerged plant materia.It is distinguishable only when is adult.

It is a Freshwater, Brackish, Marine fish. It found mainly in freshwater and estuaries, but also enters the sea . Also occurs in canals, ditches and ponds . The fishes that regularly migrate between freshwater and the sea. Found in clear to turbid streams with rock, gravel or sand bottoms . The head is depressed ,elongated, compressed, height 6 in length towards to caudal fin. Lower jaw is projecting. Normally brown or light brown with 5 to 6 dark various brown spots. Dorsal fins with small spots forming longitudinal stripes . Lays eggs amongst submerged vegetation, where the eggs are guarded by both the male and the female. A carnivorous fish, it will eat any small fish and invertebrates it comes across. In kerala locally it is called as Vaya Pottan or Poolan.

A species of Pterocryptis having 58–62 rays in anal fin; body depth 7.1–8.6 in standard length; three pairs of barbels; one maxillary pair, reaching pectoral fin tip; two pairs of mandibular barbels, one pair reaching pectoral fin base; vomerine teeth band in two separate patches; caudal fin rounded.

Pterocryptis wynaadensis is endemic to the Western Ghats. Known from the Kabini, Kuttiyadi, Chandragiri, Tungabhadra, Bedti, Bhavani, Moyar, Tambaraparini and Neerar River Systems (Gopi and Radhakrishnan 2001, Kurup et al 2004, Raghavan et al. 2007, Bhat 2004). Although Gopi and Radhakrishnan (2001) have reported this species from more than six rivers, while duly considering the habitat and peculiar behavioural pattern, this report needs to be re-validated (B.M. Kurup pers. comm.).Inhabits fast flowing river, canals and streams (mostly hides in holes on rocks) where it feeds on small fishes and crustaceans. It is nocturnal and highly reclusive during the day hiding in pools. During its spawning seasons (monsoon months), the fish often comes to shallow water in submerged cultivable fields amidst the riparian vegetation for spawning during night and returns to the stream habitats before dawn .

Used as a food fish by local communities throughout its range. They are known to be especially caught when the fish moves to inundated fields for spawning (Gopi and Radhakrishnan 2001). Smaller individuals are caught and exported to the international aquarium pet trade under the name Round Tailed Killer Catfish (Raghavan 2010).

Channa orientalis called ceylon snake head locally called vattan is a dwarf snake head species belongs to Channidae family. They originate from southwest of the island of Sri Lanka and are freshwater fish that grow to a maximum size of 30 cm (4 inches. An obligate predator which probably feeds on smaller fishes and insects in nature, but in most cases adapts well to dead alternatives in captivity. Some specimens may accept dried foods though these should never form the staple diet.Young fish can be offered chironomid larvae (blood worm), small earthworms, chopped prawn and suchlike, while adults will accept strips of fish flesh, whole prawns, mussels, live river shrimp, larger earthworms, etc.

This species should not be fed mammalian or avian meat such as beef heart or chicken since some of the lipids contained in these cannot be properly metabolised by the fish and may cause excess fat deposits and even organ degeneration. Similarly there is no benefit in the use of ‘feeder’ fish such as livebearers or small goldfish which carry with them the risk of parasite or disease introduction, and tend not have a high nutritional value unless properly conditioned beforehand. They can breathe on land and can survive on land for more than four days on wet weather.They are hardy fish that can survive environmental changes and have a good tolerance to high acidity in water.

The Ceylon snake head is, according to existing reports, a mouth brooder. The male carries the eggs while the female guards the territory. The male is less active during this period and is often seen close to the surface. The fry remain with the male until they can take care of themselves. Females may catch stray fry and return them to the mouth of the male. The fry are ejected via the gill openings. They are called ulka in Bengali.

The bulls eye snake head or Cobra snake head , Bral fish (Channa marulius) is a large species average adult fish size 70 inches / 180 cm. It is commonly found in canals, rivers, lakes and in reservoirs. It is found in Thenmalai, Neyyar and Idukki dams of Kerala. Channa marulius is commonly known as Giant Squirrel It is a fast growing carnivorous species of fish than most of the other species of its genus.

The Cobra Snake head has dark eyes, a dipped snakelike head with jutting bottom jaw and is brown/gold-tinted to pale gray to dark brown with large black blotches. It has a distinctive marking which is the black spot rimmed with orange near the base of the tail fin, known as an eye spot or ocellus. (Channa Marulius) has become one of the most studied of the snake head family. There has been extensive research on its mating habits unlike the giant snake head and others where their activity in natural habitat has been rarely studied with much accuracy.

It is now farmed to meet the increasing demand in local market. It is marketed live and fetches high prices in the market. The flesh has high nutritive value and its flesh is said to have wound-healing effect and recuperative attributes. It is highly suitable for intensive culture due to its air-breathing habit.

Feeding : Channa marulius is a predatory and will accepts most meaty food of suitable size.

Breeding: Channa marulius have been breed in ponds. They build nests in which the lay red yellowish eggs that will hatches after 2-3 days of time depending on temperature and parents protect their young ones.

The Indian long fin eel or Anguilla bengalensis sometimes known as the Indian mottled eel is a tropical, freshwater eel. It was described by John McClelland in 1844. It is known by numerous common names in the native languages of the regions it inhabits.In Malayalam it is Mananjil in Nepali Raj Baam and in Marathi it is called Vaam. It consists of two sub-species.

It is a demersal, catadromous eel in the family Anguillidae. Its body elongate, head conical, flattened dorsally. Mouth terminal, lips prominent, narrow bands of teeth on jaws, broad band on vomer. Dorsal fin soft rays number 250–305, anal fin soft rays 220–250, vertebrae between 106 and 112 in number. It is found throughout the Indian subcontinent and neighbouring regions including the East Indies. The eels spend most of their lives in freshwater at a depth range of 3–10 metres. It also occurs in estuaries and in the sea during early life and near maturity. These eels breed in the open ocean and ocean currents move the young larvae (leptocephali) coastward to where the juveniles invade fresh water. Most of the life is subsequently spent in lakes, streams and rivers but as maturity approaches the adults migrate seaward to spawn. Males can reach a maximum total length of 121 centimetres and a maximum weight of 7,000 grams. They are rather secretive during the day but actively forage at night.The eels feed primarily off of benthic crustaceans, mollusks, finfish and worms.It is a food fish. The mucus of this eel is used in a medicine for arthritis.

The freshwater garfish, Xenentodon cancila is a long thin aquarium fish that can reach up to about 16 inches (40 cm) in length. This species has an elongate body with long, beak-like jaws filled with teeth. It is also called the Freshwater Garfish but it is not a gar at all.Other common names for it include Silver Needlefish, Asian Needlefish, and Needlenose Halfbeak. It swims always close to the surface of water and look like a stick so reffered to as a stick fish. The dorsal and anal fins are positioned far back along the body close to the tail.

The dorsal and anal fins of the males will usually have a black edge.The colour of the body is silvery-green look darker above and lighter below. It has a dark band running horizontally along the flank.Freshwater Garfish are able to eat prey that is almost twice as thick as their bodies are. Slight sexual dimorphism exists, the male fish often having anal and dorsal fins with a black edge.It is oviparous spawning takes place in the morning and eggs are deposited among plants.The eggs take ten days to hatch.It is a predator fish eats animals such as fish frogs and crustaceans.It bite first, and then decide if what they bit was food.

It is found primarily in freshwater habitats, though it is sometimes found in brackish water and the sea. These fish generally have a lifespan of 3 to 5 years in captivity, but have been known to live up to 8 years or more.It is most common in rivers, but may also be found ponds, canals, and other freshwater habitats. It is the only member of the genus Xenentodon. The freshwater garfish is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia from India and Sri Lanka to the Malaysian Peninsula.

The striped mullet (The fish may have six to seven distinctive lateral horizontal stripes), Mugil cephalus has many names include black mullet, bully mullet, common mullet, grey mullet and sea mullet. It has a cylindrical body shape anterior and is become laterally compressed toward the posterior. It has 50- 100 cm in length and reaches approximately 8 kg. It is found in coastal tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. The flat head grey mullet is a mainly diurnal coastal species that often enters estuaries and rivers. Its Adult coloration is bluish-gray or greenish above and becoming silver along the sides of the body, and white on the ventral surface. The mullet has thin Lips and has no lateral line.

Habitat and Distribution: Mugil cephalus is cosmopolitan in coastal waters of the tropical, subtropical and temperate zones of all seas. It occurs worldwide and inhabits estuarine intertidal, freshwater and is lagoon-wide, with juvenile fishes most common in impounded areas, around mangroves, in sea grass beds, and offshore throughout the late fall and winter. It lives in depths ranging between 0–120 meters and with temperatures between 8–24 °C. Local fishermen usually catch mullet in a castanet, though some use a hook.

Feeding and Breeding: Female mullet reach sexual maturity in their fourth year, when they are between 40 - 42 cm. Males mature in their third year, once they reach a size of 33 - 38 cm. The minimum spawning size of females is between 31 - 34 cm. The general reproductive pattern of Mugil cephalus involves migration from either fresh or estuarine waters to offshore waters where they spawn in large schools. Larvae and prejuveniles then migrate to inshore estuaries where they inhabit shallow, warm water in the intertidal zone. The adult fish normally feed on algae in fresh water. Mugil cephalus is a heterotroph that, as an adult, is primarily a detritus feeder. Mullet are highly flexible in their food habits, with possible ontogenetic shifts in the diet as they age and make the transition from post-larva to adult. The striped mullet is often a specialty of seafood restaurants. Fried, smoked, baked, canned mullet, and pickled are eaten. Mullet is a delicacy in this area and is most often consumed in the home. The roe of this mullet is salted, dried, and compressed to make a specialty food across the world. Mullet are usually filleted, and the remaining frames used for fish stock, used in chowders and stews. The mullet most commonly prefer cleaner water gives it a cleaner and less muddy taste.

Pseudetroplus maculatus also known as the Orange chromide (known as Pallathi in Malayalam) is a species euryhaline and fish endemic to freshwater and brackish small streams, estuaries and often found in among marginal roots and weeds in lagoons and some dry zone tanks in southern India and Sri Lanka.In the former its range stretches southwards down the western coast from the state of Maharashtra through Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala states as far as the southern part of the peninsula in Tamil Nadu state.The species is popular with fishkeeping hobbyists, and is kept frequently in aquariums.The species is part of the family Cichlidae and is included in subfamily Etroplinae.The species co-occurs throughout its range with Etroplus suratensis. Orange chromides prey on the eggs and larvae of E. suratensis and also act as a "cleaner fish" removing parasites from the larger green chromides in a cleaning symbiosis. L. dussumieri samples were obtained from Meenachil,Manimala and Pamba River basins, Kerala.In India, the species is one of the highly esteemed food fishes and commands a higher price as compared to the Indian major carps, especially in Kerala State.The population structure of Labeo dussumierian endangered and endemic cyprinid fromthree riverine locations in the Western Ghats, India was investigated using allozyme, microsatelliteand RAPD markers. Freshwater; benthopelagic; potamodromous;Tropical.Inhabits relatively still waters and occurs in deep pools in larger rivers and in most low-country reservoirs. Feeds mainly on algae. Breeding in rivers is highly influenced by monsoon rains.Common ancestry in the prehistoric period; and possible mixing of fish populations resulting in high gene flow across the rivers through the lake and interconnecting canals could have been responsible for the lack of significant allelic heterogeneity among the L. dussumieri populations. In Kerala, L. dussumieri was under threat from indiscriminate fishing often with illegal gears and poor habitat quality as a result of pollution from point sources.

Description: Lives in streams and reservoirs at high altitudes, and in rivers, wells of the plains, low-lying paddy fields, swamps and brackish waters. Utilized for mosquito control. The Striped Panchax Aplocheilus lineatus has always been a relatively popular killifish. In its natural form it is a striking fish reaching up 4 inches (10 cm) with an interesting color pattern. The body is bronze in color with some golden sparkly scales, and the back half is accented with dark vertical stripes. It is also known as the Malabar Killi, Piku, and Stribet Panchax.

The development of one of the most popular varieties, the Golden Wonder Killifish seen in the photo above, has really brought it into the spotlight. Now it is hard to find an aquarium store that doesn’t carry this species. There are other common variations as well that have distinctive tails. One variant has a tail that is all red and on another the tail is red with white outer lobes.

Killifish have the reputation of being difficult to maintain and are not recommended for beginners, but this generalization certainly does not apply to the Striped Panchax. It is a very hardy species and is easy to keep in the home aquarium. It is peaceful for its size and easy to breed too. A planted tank is an excellent way to showcase your specimens. They are especially pleasing when contrasted against a dark substrate in a well lit aquarium.

Though easy to take care of, the Striped Panchax Killifish have a bit of an aggressive side to them. They are predatory fish and will ruthlessly hunt and eat small fish, like neon tetras and zebra danios. They do well in a community tank with peaceful fish that are their size or larger.

Habitat and Distribution:. Found in Benthopelagic, freshwater or brackish environments. Originated Southern and middle India. Disrtibuted in Asia widely distributed in Peninsular India.

Feeding and Breeding: Live food, although flake food is accepted. Aplocheilus lineatus will usually spawn in the community tank. Soft slightly acidic well filtered water with a temperature of 26-27 degrees will give the greatest chance of success. The pair should be fed large amounts of live food in such a tank, and left in the breeding tank for a period of maximum two weeks. After this remove the parents. The first eggs will start to hatch around this time, and should be fed infusoria in the beginning.

The giant snakehead or giant mudfish Channa micropeltes is among the largest species in the family Channidae, capable of growing to 1.3 m in length and a weight of 20 kg.The current specimen showed to be dark blue with white spots along the whole of its profile down to its white underside. According to multiple colour stages during its life history, which makes local fishermen believe that they are different species. Because of this colour differentiation. It is locally known by different vernacular names such as, Kari vaka, Manal vaka, Charal vaka, and Vaka varal.

The young of the giant snakehead are red in color, with orange and black lateral stripes appearing after about two months.Its ability to breathe air using a primitive lung located just behind the gills allows it to survive in stagnant water where oxygen levels are low, by coming to the surface and taking a small gulp of air. It also enables the snakehead to travel short distances on land, although it is unable to hunt while on land, as it cannot support itself at all with its small fins in comparison to its large body.It has number of caudal fin rays, lateral line scales, scales below lateral line; total vertebrae, pre-anal length, and body depth.

People as well as elected governments are bound to ensure the protection of Western Ghats for the existence of life, Kerala River Protection Council (KRPC) president V.N. Gopinatha Pillai and secretary S. Seetharaman have said.In a joint statement issued here on Monday, Mr. Pillai and Dr. Seetharaman accused the State government of making anti-environment decisions in the name of development, eyeing certain vote banks.They alleged that the government was sabotaging the protection of the Western Ghats, disregarding its environmental importance.

Rich in biodiversity: The Western Ghats was the origin of many river systems and the abode of a rich biodiversity and eco-system.Corporate companies were plundering the natural resources, biodiversity, and drinking water with the backing of the government, they alleged.

‘Comply with rules’:It was of prime importance to strictly comply with the Western Ghats protection, Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act-2008, coastal land conservation, they said.

The council leaders further called upon the government to withdraw the bill of 2015 that justified paddy land conversions.

‘Take over quarries’The government should take over all granite quarries and adopt a ‘tree policy’ to protect the trees standing on the wayside from indiscriminate felling.The council would stage a dharna in front of the Secretariat to press its various demands on Wednesday.

Poet to inaugurate

Social activist and poet Sugathakumari will inaugurate the dharna at 11 a.m.

Environmentalists R.V.G. Menon, V.S. Vijayan, C.R. Neelakantan, John Peruvanthanam, Usha S., R. Sreedhar, Geetha Nazeer, Sobheendran, S. Ramachandran, and Jayakumar will address the dharna.
